Here’s my lens wish list, some are on there for fun and some I actually want.

What camera gear would you recommend for a beginner?

Before you worry too much about getting the best gear, make sure you learn how to use it first. You could go out and buy the fanciest camera and lenses and still not take good photos because you don’t know how to use your camera or how to “see”. There’s also a saying, “you marry your lenses and date your bodies”. Invest in good lenses, preferably full frame compatible ones in case you ever decide to upgrade to full frame, and get a cheaper body to start. With that out of the way…

If you’re just starting out, I’d recommend getting a refurbished or used camera from the D7100+ line. They’ve come down in price as of late and are pretty solid cameras. Just make sure to check the shutter count.

I’d skip anything from the D3000 & D5000 lines. They’re not bad cameras but they do not have built in autofocus meaning they rely on the lens itself having autofocus. This isn’t horrible but it does limit what lenses you can use (and some of the lenses that won’t autofocus with those cameras are good AND cheap) and that can be confusing for a beginner.

As for a lens, a 50mm f/1.8, or 35mm f/1.8 is a great lens. Both lenses are inexpensive, have good quality glass, and can used for nearly everything. The 18-55mm lens that comes with cameras isn’t bad either. 

I don’t shoot Canon/Sony/whatever else so I can’t give any advice there sorry!

How did you learn to take photos?

LOTS of practice, I first picked up a camera back in 2013. In high school and college I took photography classes but ultimately I didn’t really learn much from them, they started at too basic of a level.

I did learn a lot about photography from taking art classes however. They taught me framing, how to use shadows/light, and movement in a photo (where does your eye travel when you view an image/art piece). My mom is also a professional photojournalist so I picked up some knowledge from her and my grandfather who’s also a published photographer.

How can I take better photos?

Again, lots of practice. Learn what every setting and button on your camera does, try different shooting modes, take the same photo at several different apertures and shutter speeds to see what changes. You can learn a lot from reading articles too but the best way to learn, imo, is by doing. Don’t worry about getting the best gear and the best camera, learn how to take photos first.

Study other photographers photos, and even paintings, and see what you like. Pay attention to directional lines and where your eye travels. Learn how to use Photoshop/Lightroom (just pirate it). Take photos in different weather, lighting, and times of day. 

What programs do you use to edit? What presets/filters do you use?

I use Lightroom and Photoshop Classic along with custom presets that I’ve made for different situations (fog, snow, etc) to process most of my images and then I make minor tweaks. A lot of my presets started as VSCO presets and then I kept the things I liked and changed the things I didn’t.

What is your job?

I’m a real estate photographer specializing in short term rentals. I love it.

Are you related to Eddie Vedder?

Yep, we’re very distantly related. Something like 7th cousins twice removed but I’ve never met him.

Can you add a photo to your print shop?

Sure! Just tell me the name of the photo (or link it if possible, I reuse a lot of names) you want added and I’ll get it up there.

May I use one of your photos?

I’m 100% ok with people using my photos as a reference for drawing/painting, I’d even love to see the result. For anything else, just shoot me an ask beforehand and I’ll let you know. Please do not repost my photos on Tumblr or elsewhere without my permission.

Mẹo nhiếp ảnh Macro

Trong bài này, tôi sẽ chia sẻ cho các bạn 10 mẹo nhiếp ảnh macro cho người mới bắt đầu chỉ mới bắt đầu. Sau khi đọc xong bài này tôi chắc chắn khả năng chụp macro của các bạn tăng lên một mức cao hơn.

#1.  chọn ống kính Có một số lựa chọn ống kính tốt cho chụp ảnh macro. Bạn có thể sử dụng ống nối dài kết hợp với ống kính bình thường, cho phép bạn phóng to. Hoặc thậm chí tốt hơn, bạn có thể đảo ngược một ống kính thông thường, kết hợp với các ống mở rộng cho phép phóng đại nhiều hơn.

Tùy chọn thuận tiện và linh hoạt nhất cho các bạn có kinh phí, nên đầu tư cho mình ống kính macro chuyên dụng. Các mẫu ống kính macro phổ biến nhất có độ dài tiêu cự từ 90-105mm, và có tỷ lệ phóng đại 1:1. Ngoài ra còn có độ dài tiêu cự ngắn hơn như 50mm hoặc 60mm, nhưng có khoảng cách ngắn hơn, nghĩa là bạn phải đi rất gần đối tượng của mình, có nguy cơ làm cho đối tượng như côn trùng sợ hãi. Phóng đại 1:1 có nghĩa là khi bạn lấy nét càng sát, chủ đề của bạn càng lớn trên cảm biến như trong đời thực. Vì vậy, nếu bạn có cảm biến khung hình đầy đủ là 36 x 24 mm, có nghĩa là bất kỳ loại côn trùng nào bạn muốn chụp có chiều dài 36 mm.

Nếu bạn sử dụng máy ảnh APS-C hoặc Micro Four Thirds, hình ảnh bạn sẽ nhận được phóng to hơn ở 1x, vì cảm biến nhỏ hơn. Những ống kính macro tỷ lệ 1:1 được sản xuất bởi hầu hết các thương hiệu lớn như Sigma 105mm, Canon 100mm, Nikon 105mm, Samyang 100mm, Tamron 90mm,… Chúng có giá khoảng 400 đến 1.000 đô la, và chúng đều rất sắc nét. #2. Thời gian tốt nhất để đi ra ngoài nếu bạn muốn chụp côn trùng là bất cứ khi nào nhiệt độ bên ngoài là khoảng 17 đến 25 độ C, vì côn trùng có xu hướng hoạt động mạnh hơn khi trời ấm. Thời tiết ẩm ướt thường tốt hơn thời tiết nắng, vì nó mang lại ánh sáng nhẹ nhàng hơn. #3. Đèn flash Nếu bạn đang chụp các vật thể rất nhỏ, chẳng hạn như côn trùng, mặt phẳng tiêu cự sẽ rất hẹp – một vài milimét hoặc như vậy. Vì vậy, bạn sẽ phải đặt khẩu độ của bạn ít nhất là F16 để có độ sâu trường ảnh tốt. Với một khẩu độ nhỏ như thế và cần một tốc độ màn trập cao, do đó đèn flash là phụ kiện cần có để cho hình ảnh đủ sáng. Bạn có thể sử dụng bất kỳ đèn flash nào để chụp ảnh macro, trong hầu hết các trường hợp, thậm chí đèn flash bật lên của máy DSLR rẻ hơn cũng hoạt động khá tốt. Cá nhân của tôi sử dụng đèn Mike MK-300 khá rẻ, nhỏ gọn và nhẹ.

Có một số tình huống chụp macro khi mà đèn flash không cần thiết. Một tình huống là nếu bạn chụp ở F2.8 hoặc F4, và có rất nhiều ánh sáng mặt trời. Đây có thể là trường hợp nếu bạn không phải là phóng đại 1:1, và do đó có thể có được một độ sâu trường tốt với một khẩu độ lớn (khi bạn di chuyển ra khỏi chủ đề của bạn, chiều sâu sẽ tăng lên). Không sử dụng đèn flash là bạn sẽ có được hình ảnh tự nhiên hơn với ánh sáng tự nhiên. Nhưng nếu bạn muốn chụp côn trùng gần và muốn có nhiều hơn một phần nhỏ trong số chúng, bạn sẽ phải sử dụng đèn flash. #4. Bộ khuếch tán ánh sáng Nếu bạn đang sử dụng đèn flash để chụp macro, tôi cũng khuyên bạn nên sử dụng bộ khuếch tán. Bộ khuếch chỉ đơn giản là bất kỳ vật liệu nào có màu trắng ví dụ như vải trắng, mà bạn có thể đặt giữa đèn flash và chủ đề của bạn. Nguồn sáng lớn hơn, mượt mà hơn và nhẹ nhàng hơn, bóng tối trong ảnh của bạn trở nên mịn hơn. Đây là lý do tại sao bạn nên sử dụng chúng trong nhiếp ảnh macro. Nó làm cho kích thước của ánh sáng từ đèn flash lớn hơn nhiều, và do đó ánh sáng trong các bức ảnh của bạn sẽ trông không khắc nghiệt, và màu sắc sẽ đi ra tốt hơn.

This summer I took a road trip with one of my daughters from Seattle to Miami and around some. I spent about 6000 miles on the road plus flying back. And this view awaited me at the farthest point from home in the Florida Keys. After a long day of driving, I loved the peaceful scene as I did my therapy of taking pictures. I snapped this pic from Lime Tree Bay resort where I enjoyed my rather short stay. I had too many places to get to on this trip but I plan on going back and enjoying their hospitality more. You can sit and relax on the sand, in the pool, use the kayaks or paddle boards, and just thoroughly enjoy the laid back Key life. I intentionally and thoroughly enjoyed being on one of the smaller keys away from the biggest tourist spots and yet close enough that I could visit anywhere I wanted. Canon’s INSANE new camera lens features two side-by-side fisheye lenses for recording 8K AR and VR footage

“A powerful 3D camera lens for an already powerful 2D camera.” I bet you’re just as baffled as I am looking at Canon’s new RF5.2mm F2.8 L Dual Fisheye Lens. It almost looks anthropomorphic, with the way the two eyes stare at you, but in fact, what’s really marvelous is where Canon seems to be going with their cameras. DSLRs and Mirrorless cameras are already some of the most powerful shooters out there, and rather than ditching that entire ecosystem of cameras to move to newer camera types – like drones and AR/VR cameras, Canon has just embraced good old-fashioned innovation instead, with a newfangled lens that is compatible with their existing EOS range of cameras. The camera lens, when pairing with the company’s 1.5.0 firmware update. Enables the humble yet capable 2D camera to shoot SBS 3D content. Pair the lens with the EOS R5 mirrorless camera. And suddenly you can perform high-resolution video recording at up to 8K DCI 30p and 4K DCI 60p. The bizarre yet beautiful lens unlocks an absolutely new dimension to photography. Just pop it onto the EOS R5 and the lenses use a complex internal optical arrangement to record SBS content on a single full-frame image sensor. When pairing with the right firmware, the video content automatically gets split, synced, stitched. And turning into 3D VR videos that can directly be exporting using Canon’s own software. The two lenses offer 190° field of view, and are spacing a precise 60mm apart to resemble the pupillary distance in humans. Making the VR content look believable and have just the right amount of parallax too. Focusing for both the lenses is controlling by a single ring. Although minor tweaks to the focus of individual lenses can be doing using hidden adjustment dials on the left and right-hand sides of the lens body. It’s low-key marvelous what the RF5.2mm F2.8 L Dual Fisheye Lens does not just for Canon. But for photography in general. It shouldn’t be long before other companies like Nikon, Sony. And Fujifilm begin introducing lenses that allow you to record two channels of video content using a single sensor. Arguably, the sensor would have to be big enough to fit both the channels. And to make sure your videos are high-resolution enough. But what Canon’s unleashing on the camera and VR world is just the beginning. That being said, this lens was designing for a special subset of users (with deep pockets) and doesn’t come cheap. The dual fisheye VR lens sports a hefty price tag of US$1,999.
