Nikolaus Groß wurde am 30. September 1898 als Sohn eines Zechenschmiedes in Niederwenigern – nahe der Stadt Essen – geboren. Nach seiner Schulzeit war er zunächst in einem Blechwalzwerk tätig. Als Schlepper, später als Hauer, arbeitete er dann fünf Jahre lang “unter Tage” in einer Kohlengrube.

In seiner knappen Freizeit war er um intensive Weiterbildung bemüht. 1917 trat er dem Gewerkverein christlicher Bergarbeiter bei, wurde 1918 Mitglied der Zentrumspartei und schloss sich 1919 dem Antonius-Knappenverein (KAB) Niederwenigern an. Schon mit 22 Jahren wurde er Jugendsekretär in der christlichen Bergarbeitergewerkschaft, bereits ein Jahr später Hilfsredakteur der Zeitung “Bergknappe”. Seine weitere Gewerkschaftstätigkeit führte ihn nach Waldenburg in Schlesien und über Zwickau wieder zurück an die Ruhr nach Bottrop. In der Zwischenzeit hatte er Elisabeth Koch aus Niederwenigern geheiratet, die ihm im Verlauf einer glücklichen Ehe sieben Kinder schenkte. Seine Familie liebte er über alles und war ein vorbildlicher Vater in seiner Verantwortung für die Erziehung und die Vermittlung des Glaubens. In seinem Büchlein “Sieben um einen Tisch” schreibt er: “Die tiefen Sorgen kreisen unablässig um die Sieben, aus denen tüchtige, aufrechte und seelenstarke Menschen werden sollen.” Bei seiner ganzen Familienliebe kennt Groß keinen Rückzug in die Familienidylle. Er bleibt wach für die großen gesellschaftlichen Probleme gerade auch in der Verantwortung für die Familie. Arbeit und gesellschaftliche Verpflichtungen sind für ihn der Ort, an dem er seinen christlichen Auftrag verwirklicht. In seiner 1943 verfassten Glaubenslehre schreibt er: “Die meisten großen Leistungen entstehen aus der täglichen Pflichterfüllung in den kleinen Dingen des Alltags. Dabei gilt unsere besondere Liebe immer den Armen und Kranken”. Als Nikolaus Groß 1929 in seiner Eigenschaft als Chefredakteur ins Kölner Ketteler-Haus einzog, hatte er sich bereits ein klares Urteil über den heraufziehenden Nationalsozialismus gebildet. Ausgehend von der Leitidee Bischof Kettelers, dass eine Reform der Zustände in der Gesellschaft nur durch eine Reform der Gesinnung erreicht werden kann, sah er in den Erfolgen der Nationalsozialisten in der Gesellschaft “politische Unreife” und “mangelnde Urteilsfähigkeit”. Schon damals betitelte er die Nazis als “Todfeinde des heutigen Staates”. Als Redakteur des KAB-Organs schrieb er am 14. September 1930: “Wir lehnen als katholische Arbeiter den Nationalsozialismus nicht nur aus politischen und wirtschaftlichen Gründen, sondern entscheidend auch aus unserer religiösen und kulturellen Haltung entschieden und eindeutig ab.” Schon einige Monate nach Hltlers Machtergreifung 1933 nannte der Führer der Deutschen Arbeiterfront die Westdeutsche Arbeiterzeitung der KAB “staatsfeindlich”. Groß versuchte in der Folgezeit, die Zeitung vor der Vernichtung zu bewahren, ohne inhaltliche Zugeständnisse zu machen. Er verstand es fortan, “zwischen den Zeilen” zu schreiben, so dass Eingeweihte es verstanden. Im November 1938 erfolgte das endgültige Verbot der inzwischen in “Kettelerwacht” umbenannten Arbeiterzeitung. Nikolaus Groß, der seine Qualifikation sehr hart hatte erarbeiten müssen, war kein großer Redner. Doch er sprach eindringlich, warmherzig und mit Überzeugungskraft. Dass Nikolaus Groß sich dem Widerstand in Deutschland anschloss, erwuchs aus seiner katholischen Glaubensüberzeugung. Für ihn galt, “dass man Gott mehr gehorchen muss als den Menschen”. “Wenn von uns etwas verlangt wird, was gegen Gott oder den Glauben geht, dann dürfen wir nicht nur, sondern müssen den Gehorsam (gegen Menschen) ablehnen”, schrieb Nikolaus Groß 1943. Ihm wurde immer deutlicher, dass dieser Zustand in Deutschland unter dem Hltler-Regime erreicht war. Am 15. Januar 1945 erging das Todesurteil. Seine Leiche wurde verbrannt und die Asche über die Rieselfelder verstreut. Am 7. Oktober 2001 wurde Nikolaus Groß durch Papst Johannes Paul II. selig gesprochen.

I've seen some people post screenshots of the game's bibliography, but I hadn't found a plain text version (which would be much easier to work from), so I put together a complete typed version - citation style irregularities included lol. I checked through the full list and found that only four of the forty sources can't be found easily through a search engine. One has no English translation and I'm not even close to fluent enough in German to be able to actually translate an academic article, so I can't help there. For the other three (a museum exhibit book, a master's thesis, and portions of a primary source that has not been entirely translated into English), I tracked down links to them, which are included with their entries on the list.

A very tough person in general- Wolf is a survivor of the Children Crusades of 1212. She was only fourteen years old when she joined Nikolaus of Köln at that time. As soon as her peers ran out of food, Wolf started to steal food for them first from fields, then from the residents in villages and towns, and eventually she turned to be a robber actively going after people.  Even before her body mutated because of the radioactive Spiders bite, Wolf had been a really tough and physically strong individual who had never hestiated to take extreme measures to protect her friends. It was eventually specifically Asadas influence and teachings who turned Wolfs rather corrupted moral compass in the right direction, but Wolf is still a very brutal person if she needs to be.

Alchemist- Wolf is a intelligent person, easily learning from Asada about medicine when Asada nolonger could directly interact with patients and eventually Asada took her under her wing, teached her in Alchemy, and intreduced her to her guild. Originally Asada had aimed to use spiderpoison to poison her disease as when her disease was alive, so it could be poisoned as every life (she was so, so close to get it. If she just would have had a microscope). When one of Asadas experiments bit Wolf, they both scientifically noted her mutations and tested her limits. Her spiderwebs are specifically chemically made. Due to the moral-differences with the Alchemist-guild Asada and with her Wolf broke eventually appart from them. After Asada was murdered Wolf joined a covenant as a laysister specifically because this would give her access to the library of the covenant to study and also because it allowed her to continue working as a doctor like she did under Asada , to the people seeking out the covenant for healing. With the people constantly coming by the covenant, it also gives her a very good overview to what the Alchemist guild is up to and if she needs to step in as spiderman. 

Perfect Vision- The spiderbite activated sleeping mutative Genes in Wolfs DNA that were suppose to become only active in her brothers descendants almost a thausand years  later.  This made her grow three more pairs of eyes with one located under her regular eyes, and two above her regular eyes on her forehead. Closed the eyes look like scarred over cuts that are very well disguised in Wolfs heavily scarred face. The Eyes below her regular eyes allowe her perfect Nightvision. The eyes above her regular eyes allowe her to see clear across great distances, into the infrared spectrum and even Bodyheat. For obvious reasons Wolf keeps those extra pairs usually closed and wears hoods or pulls her hair into her face to hide them. Considering there had grown extra holes in her skull and it changed its form, Wolf is prone to migraines. She uses small doses of pennyroyal against it.

Wallcrawling - In her time as a Thief before she had been sold into slavery and before she had been bitten by the spider, Wolf had used a Danish axe, her strenght and her agility to climb buildings and walls to work as a robber. The Wallcrawling allowed her to become even better at this, but she keeps the Danish axe to hook behind objects and pull herself up. Just in case.

Spidersense- Warns Wolf before impending Danger. Asada theorized that Wolfs Spidersense has something to do with her Wallcrawling ability, though the scientist had yet not words for static electricity and electric fields.

Super Strenght, Agility, Reflexes and Endurance- Spiders, being very fast and agile creatures, give one with spider powers enhanced speed and agility.

Enhanced Healing Factor- Much higher than regular humans. Asada theorized that the reason why Wolf survived the Pox as a child and was never infected by Asadas leprosy despite years of working as her servant and scientific assistant, was that Wolf seemed to have a natural mildly above average human Healing Factor that was eventually inhumanly enhanced through her Mutation. Neither Asada nor Wolf had any words for Genes or mutations, but just as her eyes the healing factor seem to be caused by mutative Genes that were only suppose to activate a millenium later in Wolfs Brothers (or her own) descendants.

*Waidmanns Wolf is just living around the time in which surnames past Matronyms and Patronyms slowly come up and stick around. Waidmann is a lowgerman version of "someone who hunts for food” which is a word describing someone who is working as a Hunter for a King. This Hunter is also tasked with the Work of a Forester, ranger and parker to take care of their kings forests. For that they are given a Foresters lodge, stables and dogs, which they have to keep up in case their king visits for a hunt. The Foresters lodge is a fief. Waidmann is therefor the summary for the occupations of hunter, ranger, forester and also Parker. So its simply a older, lowgerman version of Parker. Wolf has not exactly what one could call a surename, it is simply the occupation of her father by which he and her as his child is recognized by. Especially its just a addition to her name to sepperate her from anyone else born on the 31th october and is therefor sharing her first name with her. In Wolfs case her fathers Occupation had been added with a patronym “s”, making her “Waidmanns daughter Wolfgund”. Wolf herself would be a little confused when Waidmanns would be noted as part of her name.

Antonianum Merano Design

For the property, which according to the dedication provided for the construction of one structure, DMAA developed a three-part ensemble at the foot of a gently rising hill range, located on the outskirts of Merano, in South Tyrol. The lush and diverse vegetation of the adjacent natural space determines the character of this site and became the central motif of the architectural concept.

Nature is the protagonist of a spatial staging characterized by horizontally and vertically layered spatial filters, which are laid in lamella-like bands of variable density around and between the individual building structures. These structures cover the connecting network of paths in the outdoor space of the complex at different heights, serve as scaffolding for climbing plants, and provide zones of retreat and domestic intimacy in the apartments despite floor-to-ceiling glazing throughout.

Due to the generous balcony and terrace areas, which fluidly connect the apartments on all floors with the individual outdoor spaces, the form-giving contours of the individual building volumes recede into the background. This feature is further enhanced by the structuring of the multi-layered spatial grid, evoking the spirit of Californian modernism.

The three-story structures offer a broad mix of differently sized and individually scaled apartments that provide light-filled living and common spaces, unique views, as well as zones of retreat and intimacy. All apartments have generous outdoor areas, entirely zoned by trees, perennials and densely overgrown pergolas, providing sufficient privacy even on the first floor.

I’ve been posting GH stuff on twitter, because i’ve been trying to get back into twitter, but here’s the tumblr edition.

What was even the point of that DNA test Peter and Maxie ran around to do if you’re gonna have the fake results reveal, prolonging this mess?? Like look. I get soaps, especially GH like to drag things for months and even years but you could be using that time to actually push other storylines forward, but again, this is a soap so i guess.

lmao at lucy throwing out promos for herself and then being like, “You can put Kevin into my custody!!” like lucy. i’m still mad that she sided with nikolaus with the whole ELQ shares with michael but like, the way she clearly still clings on to Kevin, like.... if they don’t have them together again, then it’s like....almost cruel. like the writers like to have her for comedic purposes at times or the odd plot device, but she deserves to be happy too? idk man. 

...valentin...... ugh, valentin. there are times where i want to like him, but then he acts like an asshole and those moments go out the window. his ass knows he did wrong, got a fake daughter for nina so that -- not so she can be happy, but just so he could win her back. it’s selfish, and when he’s close to being found out, throws cassandra at her face, which only makes her more indebted to him, grateful to him, love him and it’s like..... so...gross and manipulative ( and abusive while we’re at it ) and it’s like, i can’t wait until his downfall like i’m gonna enjoy it when his ass is found out. 

the anniversary episode made me so damn emotional. scotty baldwin making me feel things. not fair. 

i actually loved the lack of flashbacks throughout the episode. i wasn’t a fan of that escape room episode, but this scavenger hunt thing was nice, because it focused on the vets and og characters just reliving the iconic moments like one would ( you know without being like -stares off as a flashblack plays- ) and it was just....really nice?? and ah, curtis and laura scenes are one of my faves. and then to bring back kevin and lucy, like that moment between them gave me emotions. and LESLIE coming back, squaring off with monica, omg i wish we had more scenes like that. i wish we had more of the OG characters, honestly.

Afrikas Inselwelten im Königlichen Kurhaus!

Am Montag, den 3. Dezember nimmt der Leipziger Reisefotograf und Weltenwanderer Jörg Hertel die Gäste um 19.30 Uhr im Königlichen Kurhaus Bad Elster mit auf eine Reise zu den Inseln um Afrika. Einmal den afrikanischen Kontinent umrunden – ein Lebenstraum! Und die Paradoxie: wir betreten den Kontinent dabei nicht. Dafür schlagen wir weite Bögen hinaus in den Atlantik. Von den Kanaren zu den Kapverden, und viel weiter hinaus zu zwei der entlegensten Inseln der Welt, Ascension und St. Helena – die viel mehr zu bieten hat als das –leere – Grab des Völkerschlächters Napoleon. Um das Kap der Guten Hoffnung erscheint dann der indische Ozean ungleich wärmer und wohliger. Die Inselwelt dort: La Reunion: zu Frankreich, zur EU, mit Euro! Zu Afrika!! Mauritius wartet mit einer landschaftlichen und kulturellen Bandbreite auf, die weit über das Insignium der fehlgedruckten blauen Briefmarke hinaus reicht. Und die Seychellen unterbreiten uns dann, was zu erwarten war. Die schönsten Strände der Welt versammeln sich – fast – alle hier. Aber an den Granitfelsen von La Digue wollen Sie eigentlich nur noch knien und schluchzen. Es gibt auch ein Zu viel an Schönheit. Eine 35.000-km-Reise, die kontrastreicher nicht sein könnte. Kosakenchor führt an die Ufer der Wolga

Am Dienstag, den 4. Dezember entführen die Original Wolga Kosaken um 19.30 Uhr in der KunstWandelhalle Bad Elster  ihr Publikum in das alte Russland, an die Ufer der Wolga. Die Wolga Kosaken präsentieren Gesänge der russisch-orthodoxen Kirche, Volkslieder, und Balalaikaklänge, die das Temperament und die Melancholie der wahren »Russische Seele« offenbaren. Lieder wie »Abendglocken«, »Eintönig erklingt das Glöckchen«, »Steppe ringsumher« oder »Ich bete an die Macht der Liebe«, welche einen wunderschönen Abend garantieren werden. Die Wolga Kosaken durften im Jahr 2013 ihr 80-jähriges Bühnenjubiläum feiern und sind damit die einzigen der ehemals großen russischen Chöre, die ohne Unterbrechung seit der Gründung Bestand hatten und auf den Bühnen der Welt präsent waren. Sie haben nicht nur erheblichen Anteil daran, dass in der Zeit der sowjetischen Diktaturen ein Stück russischer Kultur vor dem Vergessen bewahrt wurde, sondern seitdem auch Millionen von Konzertbesuchern bewiesen, dass Musik, die aus dem Herzen kommt, keine Grenzen und Ideologien kennt. In den 70er Jahren wurde der große Chor zu einem Ensemble umgebildet, das sein Publikum sowohl durch die eindrucksvolle Kraft seiner Stimmen, als auch durch die virtuose Beherrschung der typisch russischen Instrumente, Bajan, Balalaika und Domra zu begeistern versteht. Converting a disused stainless steel factory in Shanghai into an art academy

With their concept for the conversion of a disused stainless steel factory in the Baoshan district of Shanghai, the architects von Gerkan, Marg and Partners (gmp) were able to win the international competition for this project. The 860-meter-long factory with its distinctive basic structure, including the characteristic ventilation towers on the roof, will be retained and fitted out to accommodate the Shanghai Academy of Fine Arts

The Baowu Stainless Steel factory in the Wusong industrial area started operations in 1986 and, for 30 years, played an important part in China’s steel production. Having been vacated in 2016, the monumental building has been designated for conversion into the main location of the Shanghai Academy of Fine Arts, a focal point of the art quarter that is currently being created on the site of the former industrial estate.

The art academy, which is part of Shanghai University, is one of the country’s key institutions for the study of art and for international art exchange.

In China, too, the revitalization of existing buildings is becoming increasingly popular. The conversion of the stainless steel factory, designed by gmp, is currently one of the most important reuse projects in an urban context. The basic structure of the industrial building will be retained.

Using Cor-Ten steel frames, an access corridor will be created in the core of the building, running from east to west along the central axis for the entire length of the 860-meter-long building. These new frame elements resonate with the existing industrial architecture—the dark concrete and the dark steel framing.

The corridor will double up as an exhibition area and will generally be a place where students, teachers and campus visitors can meet. There are five points where the axis can be crossed by north-south traffic: three pedestrian intersections and two cross-over points for motorized traffic. At these points the corridor is built in the form of a bridge.

The distinctive structures on the roof are integrated in the design as space-defining roof lights that give the corridor a certain rhythm along its entire length. The facades will be opened up and replaced with large glazing panels and metal mesh as a second skin. The design includes important energy-conserving devices for the air conditioning of the building, such as the activation of the existing natural roof ventilation, the new double-skin facade, and floor channels that provide natural cooling to the inlet air.

With its approximately 220,000 square meters of gross floor area, the new art academy will include all important teaching facilities as well as studios, a publicly accessible forum with restaurants and retail areas, a library, sports facilities, a museum, and more exhibition areas. The planned halls of residence on the campus will provide accommodation for the academy’s 600 teaching staff and 4000 students, many of whom will come from abroad.

Uni Graz: Neuer Standort für historisches Kriminalmuseum

Betrug, Raub, Totschlag, Mord: Der Grazer Untersuchungsrichter Hans Gross (1847 – 1915) war überzeugt, dass bei der Verbrechensklärung neben Zeugen auch Dinge als Beweise heranzuziehen sind. An der Wende zum 20. Jahrhundert hat er Corpora Delicti und Objekte gesammelt, die angehenden Juristen als Lehrmaterial dienen sollten. Die Uni Graz präsentiert die Sammlung in neuem Glanz.

Wer sich mit der Kriminalistik und ihrer Geschichte befasst, stößt unweigerlich auf Hans Gross. Der Grazer Jurist, der im Jahr 1912 an der Universität seiner Heimatstadt das weltweit erste “Kriminalistische Institut” gegründet hat, zählt zu den “Gründervätern” der Kriminologie. Schon 1893 hatte er mit dem “Handbuch für Untersuchungsrichter” das erste kriminologische Lehrbuch überhaupt verfasst. Im Jahr 1905 wurde er an der Universität Graz zum Professor für Strafrecht berufen.

1896 gründete der Untersuchungsrichter seine Sammlung aus “Corpora Delicti” am Landesgericht für Strafsachen” in Graz, schilderte Kurator Christian Bachhiesl am Dienstag beim Rundgang durch das nunmehr neu eingerichtete Museum unweit des Uni-Hauptgebäudes. Diese Lehrmittelsammlung ermöglichte Studenten, Juristen und Kriminalbeamten eine anschauliche Ausbildung.

Neben Hieb-, Stich- und Schusswaffen, Projektilen, Giftstoffen und Gipsabdrücken waren und sind in der Sammlung u.a. tierische und menschliche Präparate wie zertrümmerte Knochen zu sehen. Möglich wurde das, weil zu Gross’ Amtszeit ein Erlass dafür sorgte, dass alle Gerichte der Habsburger-Monarchie interessante Materialien nach Graz zu übersenden hatten. Heute gibt die abgeschlossene historische Sammlung Auskunft zur Entwicklung der Kriminaltechnik und Verbrechensaufklärung, zur Technikgeschichte, aber auch die Mentalitätsgeschichte spiegle sich darin wieder, wie der Kurator hervorhob.

Das wohl hervorstechendste und bekannteste Objekt ist der sogenannte Tatortkoffer. Der von Gross entwickelte Koffer umfasst alle wesentlichen Hilfen, damit der Weg im polizeilichen Ermittlungsverfahren so leicht wie möglich von der Tat zum Täter führt. Noch heute steht er im Mittelpunkt der Ausstellung, die nun am neuen Standort in der Grazer Heinrichstraße eröffnet wurde. Der alte Standort im Keller der Uni am Universitätsplatz musste vor vier Jahren geschlossen werden, weil Feuchtigkeit und Schimmelbefall der Objekte eine Restaurierung und Verlagerung der Objekte notwendig gemacht hatten.

Zu den rund 100 Utensilien im Koffer gehören neben einem Zirkel, um kleine Gegenstände messen zu können, einem Maßstab, Siegellack und einer kleinen Bürste auch ein Paar Strümpfe: für den Fall, dass es während der Untersuchung zu regnen beginnt und die Füße des Ermittlers nass werden.

Von Gross’ Nachfolgern wurden in Graz noch über mehr als ein halbes Jahrhundert auch Fotografien und Objekte als Schulungsmaterial gesammelt. Heute umfasst die Sammlung rund 2.000 Objekte und sie ist auch digital abrufbar, wie Museumsleiter Nikolaus Reisinger schilderte. Der Bogen der nunmehr in zwei Räumen auf rund 50 Quadratmetern präsentierten Objekte reicht von Brandrelikten über Waffen und zu Leichenbehältnissen umfunktionierte Säulenstümpfe, Schilderungen und Fotos von Leichenverstecken, gefälschten Dokumenten und manipulierten Würfeln, bis hin zu als Gehstock getarnten Waffen und den dazugehörenden Strafakten. “Die Sammlung umfasst das Zehnfache von dem was wir herzeigen können”, so Kurator Bachhiesl.

We flew with AirAsia down to Phuket and took a taxi to our modest room but with a walking distance to the beach. So far so good ... no big hotels here, but lot’s of restaurants and a pretty beach with palm trees and shade. We have seen much worse and look forward to relax here for a few days.

Wir sind nun in Süd Thailand - auf der Phuket Insel am Kamala Strand. Heute gibt es nicht so viel Interessantes zu berichten. Wir haben unser Auto am Flughafen zurück gegeben, nach ca. 1200 km  und sind dann mit AirAsia in ca. 2 Stunden nach Phuket geflogen. Hier ging es dann weiter mit dem Taxi zu unserem Quartier. Nicht sonderlich luxuriös aber ca. 50 m vom Strand entfernt. Der Strand hier ist ganz nett ohne grosse Hotels aber mit vielen Gaststätten und Bars. Trotzdem kann man sich sicher noch zurück ziehen und das Meer geniessen. Ich denke, dass wir uns hier noch ein paar Tage ausruhen können, bevor es wieder nach Ottawa geht.
