I get that we have had and still have some technologicially disparate societies in real life history. But there's something annoying about world building when you've country with tech from classical antiquity, country with medieval technology, country with napoleonic era technology and country tech from early 1900 co-existing together and I don't know why. lol

During the 6th century, Buddhism was introduced in Japan and later adopted as the official religion. The monk Keikai edited 116 Buddhist stories from the Nara period and earlier in the Nihonkoku (Genhō Zenaku) Ryōiki日本(国現報善悪)霊異記 (822)[20]. In this compilation there are several stories dealing with mental disorders, but remarkable is that this “madness” is often reported as punishment for a crime committed towards Buddhism ( Source )

Chapter 2: Kami Shrines, Myths, and Rituals in Premodern Times
Jingi Ritual
…The main aims of jingi rituals were securing rain and averting pests to obtain a good harvest; quelling disease among the populace; protecting the state from rebellion and invasion; and guaranteeing the health and safety of the emperor, the palace, and the capital. The establishment of tof this cult coincided with the adoption… of the title tennō (emperor; literally “heavenly sovereign”), and… the renaming of his realm as Nihonkoku (“the land of the sun’s origin”)… designed to transform the Yamato king into a figure whose position on earth was as universal and undisputed as that of the sun in the sky.
—Pages 32-33
…By handing out heavenly rice ears, then, the king signaled that the growing of rice depended on the blessings of the heavenly deities. The rice crop depended on the king’s worship of the deities, and… this gave him a claim on “first ears” from the harvest (hatsuho; and early for of taxation).
There is of course no arguing the fact that kinensai, whose name means “ceremony of praying for the harvest,” was agricultural in nature. Yet it is striking that the actual ceremony… moved away from such an exclusive focus on rice. In the sources there are almost no traces of a distribution of rice ears. The earliest source…. Engi shiki lists an enormous variety of “offerings” (heihaku) to be distributed at kinensai, ranging from different kinds of cloth (silk, hemp, bark-cloth, “common cloth”) to weapons (shields, spearheads, bows, quivers) and such foodstuffs as sake, dried abalone, bonito, and deer meat; rice is conspicuously absent from the list.
…also records the norito prayer that was recited… this prayer sets out by petitioning the gods for a good harvest, but soon moves on to praising the imperial reign as an institution protected by all the deities of the realm…
Despite the fact that kinensai clearly was a ritual offering in prayer for bountiful crops, both the goods offered and the prayer intoned in this ceremony celebrated imperial power not in agricultural terms, but rather in economic and military terms… in accordance with…jingi myth, where agricultural themes only remain in such traces as deity names, embedded in what is at bottom a tale of subjugation by military force.

"The jingi cult consisted of a broad range of ceremonies. The main aims of jingi rituals were securing rain and averting pests to obtain a good harvest; quelling disease among the populace ; protecting the state from rebellion and invasion; and guaranteeing the health and safety of the emperor, the palace, and the capital... The establishment of this cult coincided with the adoption... of the title tennō (emperor; literally "heavenly sovereign"), and with the renaming of his realm as Nihonkoku ("the land of the sun's origin"). It was a highly political construct, designed to transform the Yamato king into a figure whose position on earth was as universal and undisputed as that of the sun in the sky."

So one of the manga’s I’m keeping up on is Nihonkoku Shoukan which is an Island in the Sea of Time riff and naturally it’s got some fash BS to it though not as much as 1632. But I actually enjoy it because it’s just an over the top, We Are The Good Guys And These Dudes We’re Curbstomping Are Unapologetic-ally Evil, only without constant “see, wouldn’t society be better if glorious strong men led us?” wank of other, similar modern-mil-fantasy titles.
It’s still leans pretty heavily into “military action is the best diplomatic option” but at least the characters make an attempt to justify it somewhat without whining about having to overcome dolchstoss.
