🔴The Great lower temple in Niha🔴 ⚫Located in Niha a village in the Bekaa Valley , Lebenon. ⚫Niha is famous for its Roman archeological ruins, and in particular the two lower Roman temples that date back to the 1st century AD. ⚫The inside of the Great Temple consists of two parts: the cella, where the people used to gather, and the elevated adytum, which was accessed by a stairway. ⚫The adytum used to hold the statue of the god or goddess. ⚫Under the elevated adytum is a crypt, which held the items used during the ceremonies and rituals of the temple. ⚫The doorway leading to the crypt is decorated with a carved relief representing a priest pouring holy water over an altar , to the left a relief represents a winged boy riding over a sheep or a bull. 🧜‍♀️The temple was dedicated to the mermaid goddess Atargatis and her consort, the god Hadaranes. ⚡Hadaranes is the god of thunder, lightning and rain, Atargatis is the goddess of fertility. ⚫The temple was still in use when it was destroyed by an earthquake. ⚫The remains are visible of two Roman temples, but only one of which has been restored. 👀Check out my Stories 👀 . . . Carved into the rock of a cliff overlooking the Bisri and 'Aray valley, the Fortress of Niha has been monitoring the road between Sidon and the bekaa valley. It is mentioned for the first time in 975 AD and later in 1133. It has been controlled alternatively by the crusaders and local Muslims until its destruction in 1261. In 1270, the Mamluk leader Baibars ordered to rebuilt it. In 1585, the Emir Qorqomaz Maan probably took refuge in it briefly before his death. It is reputed that the Emir Fakhreddine the second also found refuge there before he was executed by the Pasha of Damascus in 1635, and his father Emir Korkomaz, in 1584. Shaped like a cave over a hundred meters deep, the fortress features chambers and rooms which were dug in order to shelter the soldiers and as depots for domestic work. Water resources were provided both by a rain collecting system and through a pipe from the 'Ain el-Halquoum spring. It also had a considerable number of silos for storing provisions. The fortress was well fortified and enclosed in a wall pierced with openings.
