Wednesday, January 25: Holocaust, “Coming Through”

“Coming Through” was originally released on an EP of the same name, arriving a year after Holocaust put out one of the defining records of the New Wave of British Heavy Metal with The Nightcomers and generally continuing on with that album’s loose, charming and slightly hapless approach.  The Coming Through EP was actually the one Holocaust release made without founding guitarist and songwriter John Mortimer, who would soon take over the name and essentially fire the rest of the band.  Despite this, the track was a logical continuation of The Nightcomers, and played like the rough-and-ready NWOBHM banger it was intended to be.  If anything, “Coming Through” further contradicted the perception that early ‘80s British metal groups like Holocaust and Diamond Head were heavier and darker than they actually were, as the track made very clear that while Mortimer ultimately would take the band in that direction, at the very beginning these were just a bunch of dudes rocking out in celebration of having a good time.
