Three Thousand Years of Longing (2022, USA/Australia)
Director: George Miller
Writers: George Miller & Augusta Gore
Mini-review:
Few directors have a filmography as eclectic as George Miller. Seriously, his work ranges from action and science-fiction to dark comedy, tearjerking dramas and family movies. And Three Thousand Years of Longing adds yet another genre to that list: epic fantasy romance. That being said, I must admit this film was bit disappointing, considering his previous one (Mad Max: Fury Road) was such a mind-blowing masterpiece. It's not that TTYOL is a bad movie, not at all. It's just that my expectations were sky-high.
The "tales" are easily the best part of the movie. They are a visual marvel, with beautiful cinematography and gorgeous sets and costumes. And the stories are just as interesting as the visuals, too. However, the rest of the film falls kinda flat in comparison. The cinematography in the present day scenes is really bland, and sometimes it feels like you're watching a different movie. Tilda Swinton and Idris Elba are incredibly gifted actors, but they don't really have enough chemistry to sell the movie's final act, which is a bit of a shame. I did enjoy their conversations and all the themes approached in the dialogues, though. So, as you can see, Three Thousand Years of Longing is a bit of a mixed bag, but I enjoyed most of it. It lasts less than two hours, too, so it never gets boring. Overall, it's a pretty solid movie, even if it isn't at the level of Miller's best work.

Rookie-Critic's Top 25 Films of 2022: Honorable Mentions - Three Thousand Years of Longing (dir. George Miller)
Tumblr media
A bit of a departure from Mad Max director George Miller's normal fare, this modern fable told in 5 chapters is surprisingly heartfelt and slower-paced when compared to the breakneck pace and zany tones of films like The Road Warrior and Fury Road. I was genuinely impressed with Idris Elba's performance as the djinn in a way that I am normally not with him, and I found myself very emotionally moved his journey. Elba plays the character with a depth and vulnerability that surprised me, and the softness of the film's central love story blended with Miller's frenetic camerawork made for a unique theater experience. I loved it.
Currently streaming on fuboTV & MGM+.

20. His Only Son (2023)
A low-key, thoughtful take on the story of Abraham and Isaac. It's nicely done, and although slow, the very quiet yet charismatic performance by Nicolas Mouawad as Abraham keeps you engaged.

Three Thousand Years of Longing (3000 Years of Longing) – Movie Review
TL;DR – While it might meander to the end, it shines when it delves into stories and vignettes of the past.     ⭐⭐⭐⭐ Rating: 3.5 out of 5. Post-Credit Scene – There is no post-credit sceneDisclosure – I paid to see this film. Three Thousand Years of Longing Review – Few films have ever captured my soul quite like Mad Max Fury Road, a movie that changed and shaped my engagement with cinema.…

Three Thousand Years of Longing    [trailer]
A lonely scholar, on a trip to Istanbul, discovers a Djinn who offers her three wishes in exchange for his freedom.
Some entertaining fairy tales, told in colourful ways. And interesting takes on wish granting.
Though as much as I like the two leads, they weren't able to convince me that there's a romantic relationship between their characters.

Three Thousand Years of Longing (2022, dir. George Miller) - review by Rookie-Critic
Tumblr media
Three Thousand Years of Longing, the first film Miller has directed since the widely-acclaimed Mad Max: Fury Road, is a much slower-paced, meticulously crafted tale, and a beautiful one at that. Told largely through a series of flashbacks, those segments of the film still have that frenetic energy we've all come to love from Miller. Even the modern-day pieces have touches of his signature camerawork, but it largely doesn't feel like his typical fare. This might sound absolutely crazy for those who have seen the works of this director, but this almost felt like George Miller by way of classic Jim Jarmusch, with just a touch of that Guillermo del Toro fairy tale flair. I'm not sure if the Jarmusch connection is just coming from the fact that Tilda Swinton, a frequent collaborator of Jarmusch's, is the lead of the film or if it legitimately feels like one of his, but I was getting strong Jarmusch vibes from the movie.
Tilda Swinton was excellent, as she almost always is, and Idris Elba, dare I say, gives the best performance of his career so far as the Djinn. A truly emotionally resonant, vulnerable performance that makes the movie and stands out as one of this year's best so far. I've been seeing very mixed reviews for this, which I can sort of understand. People may have gone into this expecting a true-to-form George Miller experience, and this definitely was not that, but I like when directors try at an off-type movie. Results are varied, but in Three Thousand Years' case, I am of the opinion that it undoubtedly worked. My one complaint with the film, and it's a complaint that I have with a lot of films, is that a certain aspect of it that I will not spoil here felt a little rushed, and by virtue a little unearned. It's by no means the next Fury Road, but it is, in a much different way from that film, an incredibly journey, and one well worth taking.
Score: 9/10
Currently available to rent or purchase on digital (iTunes, Amazon, Vudu, etc.) or on DVD & Blu-ray through Warner Bros.
