There's like this one genre of post and video essay I keep seeing from people who say they aren't upset about the HTTYD casting for racist reasons, they're upset because they don't like the characters they love to change. They're attached to their appearance, and they'd be uncomfortable with any deviation.

I am going to give these people the benefit of the doubt and assume this is true. But, like, so? Why do you think your discomfort should be prioritized over representation?

You realize that's what you're saying right. They shouldn't have cast Astrid as a black girl to protect your comfort.

And you can say it's not about race and you'd be just as upset with any changes, but when you do that you're ignoring a larger context that I don't have the privilege to. This franchise (that I do love) has had a long acknowledged racism problem. People put the idea of a "faithful" adaptation on some kind of pedestal but HTTYD was not perfect, and I'm not interested in preserving that aspect of it.

And I can hear the original character defense coming from a mile and away and yes. Absolutely there should be original characters of color being written with intention from the very start. But if Dreamworks is going to thrust HTTYD right back into the center of the cultural zeitgeist again, then I am glad as hell they're doing it with POC included this time.

Do you know what it's like to be excluded so often you don't even think to look for yourself anymore? I grew up writing stories with only white protagonists because I, in the most literal sense possible, did not realize you could write stories a different way (and this wasn't a long time ago I'm young, you guys).

And the absolute joy that comes with seeing yourself represented in media you love? Do you know how much it changes you? I swear to God it alters your trajectory.

You don't get to put your comfort above others knowing they're accepted. Above little black girls all over the world watching this movie with a new kind of magic in their eyes because now black girls can ride dragons too.

It's not some great, egregious thing to you that Nico Parker is playing Astrid. It's not some mortal wound that you can never recover from. If you're so attached to one version of the character, then watch the version with her in it, it's not hard. The film isn't being force fed to you, if it makes you unhappy, act like a mature human being and don't interact with it.

But you don't get to exclude people of color again just because it makes you feel better that we're not there.

annabeth : pyro – passionate, dedicated their lives to something they like. her passion/interest/etc would be architecture, obviously. even tho she's a child of athena, it's not that her biggest trait is searching for any and all knowledge about whatever. it's that, even removing her godly heritage, she would still have a burning passion for architecture that she would 100% put into use regardless of whatever world or au she's in

percy : hydro – strong dedication/desire to help people (or their movement). percy's fatal flaw is literally loyalty. even removing the fact that he's the son of the sea god, the fact that he is overly loyal to those he adores is just really hydro of him. and yeah, other characters can be loyal asw, but it's the forefront of who he is, and defines him, just like his element

grover : dendro – wanting to know things/skills that are hard/forbidden/that they like. for years, he and his ancestors searched for pan. he and his uncle and other satyrs dedicated their lives to it, which was clearly a hard skill-esque thing to do. it's only fair that in teyvat that he'd get a similar story of finding the knowledge and completing what's been lost. even as a human, he'd find something nature-focused to dedicate his life around

jason : electro – seeing the world uniquely and are considered weird/in their own world. the whole camp half-blood vs. camp jupiter arc he had would make you think he would be cryo (stuck between two things) but really, even at either camps, it'd still be off for him. from his parentage to how he was raised and who he is as a person, it just makes sense for him to be considered hugely different from his peers. and if you want to keep in the raised by wolves things, think razor

piper : geo – hardworking in general, does anything to achieve their goal(s). she was a struggle to decide, honestly. but her goal in pjo was to just live a normal life. from having normal attention from her celebrity father to eventually seemingly abandoning the mytho world in toa in favor of living a much more normal, mortal life, she does anything she can to get there. she dates jason to have a normal, loving relationship in the middle of a time where nothing was close to her normal (the war) and leaves him and the others for the mortal side of her life, and achieves what she always wanted

leo : cryo – contridictory life, stuck between two worlds/the past and present. it's his mom's death. even well-past her dying, he's haunted by it, and constantly thinks he's the cause because of his powers. no matter what he does, it always somehow links back to his mother, in one way or another. his life is so interlinked with her death that he's just stuck on it, and has been ever since it happened, and will always be

frank : geo – hardworking in general, does anything to achieve their goal(s). he was hard, like piper. unlike her, i don't think he'd really have one gigantic goal. in pjo, he did, which was to survive, and he managed it, and got rid of his life being tied to a woodstick. i think he'd be hardworking to prove himself, also like in the books. he proved himself to be useful to the seven despite his whole life-stick thing, to the camp despite being in the worst cohort

hazel : cryo – contridictory life, stuck between two worlds/the past and present. it's kind of self explanatory? from the whole sammy-leo plot to her having been literally dead for a while (think qiqi too), it's the most fitting. you can maybe add the whole dead mom thing like leo, although it would weigh more on her of how her mom was the cause of her death due to her being manipulated by a higher-being rather than leo's whole haunted by the memory of his mother plot

nico : cryo – contridictory life, stuck between two worlds/the past and present. like hazel, he's from the past. like leo, the death his mom (and sister) weigh on him heavily. bianca's affected him for four straight years, with him being completely on his own when he ran and had to face her death. he even tried to bring her back. i think that's reason enough for cryo

reyna : anemo – desire for/chasing after a form of freedom. she, although not being forced into it, had been a foundational role for camp jupiter for a long while at a young age, and eventually took her chance with the hunters to find herself. her freedom is her ability to now discover who she wants to be without feeling like she needs to step up into a heavly burdening role

Fan art GI x PJ Part 1

Since I have free time, a love for Percy Jackson, a nascent obsession with Genshin Impact (to the point that I spoiled the entire story and I'm barely in Liyue, finishing Act I, so I'm sorry if it's inaccurate with canon) and a very crazy head that won't leave me alone until I get this out of my head, here is my fanart combining GI x PJ.

Starting to present the characters and the lore that I invented, there is Dionysus, who would be Venti with some changes. Before Dionysus, there was Hermes as the first anemo archon (I couldn't leave out my middle child) Dionysus got the position just a few years after Hermes, who died in the war against Khaenri'ah by orders of Celestia (which here would be Kronos), Dionysus never got to meet Hermes, but he did learn his stories from the winds as soon as he became archon Also Dionysus being the god of madness, I definitely see him as someone who would encourage Monstadt to live as freely and happily as possible, and he is also the reason why Monstadt's parties and festivals are so legendary throughout Teyvat.

On the other hand, the next archon is Apollo, geo archon for several, several reasons... (I blame every post on ao3 and Tumblr by @apollosgiftofprophecy and @tsarinatorment, they put a love for Apollo and mythology in me that I appreciate, except here because I thought more about Apollo than mythology half of the characters XD)

First Apollo has some control with Zeus regarding law and order, god of civilization, and is in some way seen as the protector of tombs and cemeteries, it is wonderful that Zhongli (archon Geo in Genshin Impact) works in a funeral home, is related to the law as the god of contracts and has watched over Liyue and its inhabitants, having great influence on its people and how it grew as a civilization In addition to that he also has some influence on sailors and ships, as the patron of sailors, so Liyue being a port city, well discarded and taken Apollo was Zhongli's turn As also the god of knowledge.

I love being a rat so he is the only living archon in this UA who went through the war of the archons, Khaenri'ah and until today, who would take the role of Guizhong would be Jacinto naturally (dead, shipped with Zhongli / Apollo) and who would take the role of Xiao would be Nico di Angelo (dwarf, traumatized... is perfect) plus I can keep the dynamic of Dionysus as Nico's therapist (something that is a little different from canon, Xiao does not receive therapy from Venti, but rather he purifies him) but that would remain as a separate thing from their relationship Also, as an extra Zhongli reviews the future of Liyue to bring a guide on how to prosper (Apollo and his mastery of prophecy), for certain reasons (Artemis) is that he would decide to retire as archon and continue working at the funeral home discreetly with Nico, occasionally hanging out at the orphanage with the children.

Respect to Artemis I will talk about her in her fanart, and her relationship with Apollo along with what happened here

Nico on his side has been with Apollo since the war of the archons, as his right hand (previously he had other companions, similar to the adeptus who serve Rex Lápiz) the most notable is Commodus, who went crazy killing corrupt gods, beings of the abyss and the cherry on top was Apollo's rejection for his feelings, still hurt by the death of Hyacinth (with whom unlike Guizhong, he would be god of flowers) but they would have spent almost as much time as Zhongli and Guizhong together (close to 1000 years if I'm not mistaken, I appreciate the corrections) so he would continue fighting with a broken heart.

(PS: I also thought of Branchus as Guizhong but, Guizhong fell in the war, Hyacinth did not die a peaceful death then... well, tragedy with tragedy).

Continuing with Nico, he would be mourning for his companions but with Apollo they decided to take it easy, and he was in Apollo's retirement plan (who says that with stone and an archon's influence you can't make a fake corpse?) and he has been improving with the mourning and trauma of the war with the help of Dionysus and the passage of time.

Lastly Meg, because she is the strongest daughter of Demeter she couldn't just be left as an extra, no, no, no.

I understand than Neuvillette is the hydro dragon reborn as her own offspring, here Meg would be the remains of the essence of Demeter, discovered by Artemis who thought she was a child of an endangered species and raised her, when what happened with Artemis happened (the same as with Rukkhadevata, but whoever reads this and is part of the PJO fandom will not know) Apollo took her under his custody with Nico and now she works with them, apart from living with them, in the funeral home .

Speaking of the designs, I tried to make the clothes as faithful as I could, Apollo with Liyue clothes, some Greek and Sumeru for his sister (the moon earring that he has is Artemis's), with white eye shadow (also for his sister that I designed with white locks), a book, a random kid from the orphanage with long hair in a braid (courtesy of Meg who wanted to practice and Nico doesn't let him).

Nico with long hair (because he lived with Apollo for so long he started to like to wear his hair a bit long, also in reference to ancient China and the custom of not cutting his hair), his usual dark circles and his hidden vision on his back.

Meg with a Sumeru bird (coincidentally called Peaches) somewhat more Sumerian clothes and a spear, she is trying to learn to fight with other weapons apart from her classic twin swords.

And Dionysus with a good bottle of Dandelion Wine, classic from Monstadt, and more Monstadt clothes too.

I've been thinking about this idea for like, a hot minute, plus i've talked with a friend about it, and i decided to share it. so Vision elements & weapon types for the Straw Hats, plus what nations they'd be from if they existed in the world of Teyvat (plus some additional little thoughts and headcanons)! all 11 straw hats will be included

Monkey D. Luffy

Element: Anemo

Weapon Type: i wanna say Catalyst maybe?

Reasoning my friend gave for him being anemo: "freedom and dreams"

Roronoa Zoro

Element: Geo

Weapon Type: Sword

Nation: Inazuma

Additional Thoughts: I imagine his fighting style would be more similar to Chiori's in-game then it would be to other sword fighters from Inazuma. He probably would've left Inazuma before the Vision Hunt Decree, so would've been unaffected by it.

Reasoning my friend gave for Geo for him: "constantly looking to be stronger. Is a rock."

Element: Electro

Weapon Type: Polearm

Additional Thoughts: I think originally my friend suggested Anemo for her, but after i started seeing her using lighting with the clima-tact more, plus i learned that (according to Oda in the SBS from Volume 98) if Nami had a devil fruit, she'd have the goro goro no mi/rumble-rumble fruit, which is the lighting devil fruit that Enel has, i decided that electro would probably fit her better.

Usopp

Element: Dendro

Weapon Type: Bow

Nation: honestly i'm not too sure, originally my friend said Mondstadt, but i could also see maybe Natlan or Sumeru (rainforest) for him

Friend's reasoning for Dendro for him: "I'm told that post timeskip he explores botanical things and it just makes sense" (they hadn't reached the timeskip at the time we talked about this)

Additional Thoughts: I imagine his fighting style would be similar to Heizou's, which is why i thought catalyst as his weapon type.

Additional Thoughts: I have too many thoughts on Robin in the world of Teyvat. First of all, in Robin's pre-timeskip outfits for Whisky Peak, Skypiea, & Long Ring Long Land (underneath the jacket) she wore an armband/bangle on her left arm that had a gold medal on it that had a BW for Baroque Works on the medal in the Whisky Peak outfit and in the Skypiea & LRLL outfits had a N for "Nico", basically, that would be her vision in genshin. She would probably grow up either in or have some involvement with the Fatui, before somehow ending up in Sumeru where she works with Crocodile for a bit.

Robin watched as her dear friend sat, breathing deeply against her god's side.

Cass had been busy as of late, extremely so. Busy to the point Luffy was forced to step in, which could only mean one thing.

Something big was coming.

And as such, it was only a matter of time Cass revealed what was bothering them.

"A war is coming," They admit softly, nestled against Luffy's side. "A war of the gods."

They paused, letting everyone absorb the information.

A war of the gods.

"How?" Nami asked, frowning. "Why?"

The Oracle let out a wary sigh.

"Celestia," Cass let the word fall from their lips. "Shall make seven seats, seven thrones. One for each element. Seven gods shall remain at the end, ruling over nations of their own making."

Robin hummed to herself, thinking of everything Cass had been doing for the past year, maybe longer. They hadn't seemed to be preparing for war.

Besides, if a nation was at the end of it...

"Bleh," Luffy, her dear god, stuck out his tongue. "Sounds boring."

Robin laughed softly.

Luffy was not a ruler by any means, nor did he have any desire to. Her god was an adventurous one. He was not worshipped because he demanded it, but because his actions made others want to.

"As fun as it would be to test my blades against the other gods," Zoro said, a small smirk on his face. "Running a nation doesn't. That would mean being tied down."

"I'm aware," Cass drawled. "That is not who we are and not what we are going to do."

"You had me make a ship," Franky said. "A super one at that."

"I did," Cass agreed easily. "We've traveled all of Teyvat. I figured it's about time for our next adventure, no?"

"When do we have to leave?" Sanji asked, an unlit cigarette hanging from his lips. "How much time do we have?"

"Oh, we still have over a year," They waved a hand. "I figured everyone would like enough time to wrap up their affairs before we leave."

The seas beyond Teyvat. Robin leaned back in her chair. What histories would they find? What adventure would they have?

Oh, she could not wait.
