fuck mercedes . and f1 tbh . whats the point in mercedes doing a season finale / adu dhabi themed post just to blank rosberg ? the post had seb TWICE in it eventho he never raced for merc . BOTTAS had pictures in it , even russell wss in it twice . merc driver’s championships for vettel : 0 . merc driver’s championships for bottas : 0 . merc drivers championships for russell : 0 . fun fact btw , russell’s p8 in the championship is the worst result for a merc driver since 2012 !! ( rosberg p9 and schumacher p13 ) . but how many pics of nico, who actually won a title ???? 0 . even after lewis tried his best to make rosberg lose .
the f1 post is even more laughable, with lotus era raikkonen with rb vettel, lewis and alonso???? for some reason??? pics of vettel’s retirement, and lots of lewis . i get he won there but a fucking world championship was won there and the social media admins just do not care ??? i dont get it
#f1#formula one#abu dhabi gp 2023#mercedes#red bull racing#sir lewis hamilton#lewis hamilton#nico rosberg#sebastian vettel#valtteri bottas#george russell#michael schumacher#kimi raikkonen#if u cant tell m pissed off#justice for rosberg#nico rosberg defence#kas rambles !?

deceased at the implication that lewis was so deeply hurt by max’s dumb secret santa gift to valterri one year that he refuses to participate in the videos as a staunch moral stance. max lives rent free in these people’s heads so badly that they have to write fanfiction that frames lewis as some heroic protector of bottas to cope with him … just not wanting to do something he doesn’t have to do? save lewis from his own fans, man.
#whackjobs 😭😭#this really made me laugh so hard#sometimes i really do feel for lewis#such an incredibly talented driver#competitive and willing to do ANYTHING to win#waged absolute mental warfare on nico rosberg and sent the man to retirement#and his fans disrespect all that legacy#and paint him as so mentally weak that he gets offended by his teammate getting a can of fish so he cant handle doing secret santa videos#some of his fans really dont appreciate him for what he is#which is a fierce competitor who will do ANYTHING to win#if you have to erase half your drivers personality to like him#and its the part that makes him most successful in a racecar#you either dont understand this sport or just dont like your driver very much#didnt mean for this to become such a passionate defence of lewis but he just deserves more respect from a small segment of his fans#*

how are you feeling after the race?
As much as charles seems very happy, I'm very sad for him not getting the podium in monza. feels unfair! I keep thinking about some of those attempts at overtaking carlos and it was sooo close at some point, it was almost there
honestly, i think both is valid. he was setting faster lap times, tried to pass and had to back down multiple times to avoid a double dnf (*horst fuchs voice* carlos was moving under braking not just for max, not just for checo, but also for his own teammate, all for the price of one).
so yes, he deserved it, and if he could take all the risks and wouldn't back down, who knows? but also this is not how f1 works, because if it was fair lewis would be 8 times wdc and charles would bag down his first. i'm just happy he made a show for his people, that he enjoyed the battles on the track and mostly that he came out of the car, congratulated his teammate, joked with his mechanics, laughed with his team principal, with the journalists and with other driver friends on the grid, and mostly that after all, he could come up for his tifosi and celebrate the good result with them.
it's easy to focus on results and numbers only and forget the background. just like in 2021. i love this sport for the passion, for those drivers who never give up, for those who are here because they wanna race and be the very best at it, and i really felt that yesterday.
#summary of my brain dumb after 3 hours of sleep: mixed feelings of course#but even thought i really wanted him up there and thought p2 was realistic at some point#and at being mad at carlos' defence (but then again who wasn't mad about that yesterday rip)#all things considered i really enjoyed the race itself.#which is crazy because once nico rosberg appeared i hurriedly turned it off not wanting to see anything more#but it's like this#ask#e

Wait can you share some lore on the Will Buxton / Nico Rosberg one sided beef?? I didn’t know about it til I saw you reference it!!
okay, please bear in mind that i am deeply biased about this because i love nico with my entire being and i wouldn't piss on will buxton if he were on fire, but.
so back in 2005 will buxton was the gp2 press officer. you know the guy who sits on the couch and asks the drivers questions in the media day press conferences? he was that for the gp2 series that nico was competing in.
in his The Contenders article, buxton says that he doesn't remember when he met nico, but that he hated him immediately. he thought he was arrogant and conceited and he SPECIFICALLY mentions the blonde hair, a nepo baby without any talent to back it up. in the article he sneers at "a handful of f3 wins" which is a very strange way of saying the joint 2nd highest number of wins in that series, 2nd only to the winner (and more than lewis, who nico was competing against and finished higher than). he says that he hated nico so much that he went out of his way to avoid him and got other people to get the necessary quotes from nico. so like, was nico actually arrogant and conceited or did buxton just decide that he was and then "confirmed" it with every interaction or lack of? when you consider how every other journalist/person that nico has worked with over the years described him, arrogant is not one of the words that comes up (if anything, people tend to say that he's shy or reserved). i can maybe see how you might think that if you only ever look at the surface because i do think nico's ice princess defence mechanism can come off like that, but the whole point of journalism is to look beyond that, and buxton is literally admitting that he refused to do that for reasons that probably aren't even there (because he refused to speak to nico).
and then later, will has this whole section on how nico manipulates his own image/presentation depending on what language he's speaking. and he frames it like an act of press manipulation (which buxton has already said that he disliked nico for when nico tried to take control of the questioning in press conferences). and idk, i just don't think it's accurate. like, personally, the way i speak changes slightly depending on what language i'm speaking and my confidence in that language. and will buxton was trying to judge nico's body language/demeanour whilst not understanding any language that nico was speaking other than english. i just don't think you can comment on how someone speaks a language or if they're being stubborn or sheepish or whatever if you don't actually understand the language. i think a lot of that section was just will buxton's fantasy interpretation of what he wanted nico to be like, arrogant and manipulative, so that he could justify his own weird hatred of a 19 year old that he'd never spoken to.
and then the whole thing ends with will buxton calling nico a dick or something and that being what finally breaks the barriers between them. it just reads so lonely nerd tells high school queen bee that she's got an ugly personality and then she falls for him because he's the first person to care about her personality not her looks to me.
idk, like i said at the beginning i'm incredibly biased. i hate will buxton for so many reasons outside of this article that i can never truly be objective about it, but i really don't understand how you can read it and think "oh yeah this is an accurate representation of a person" and not one man's bizarre incel-lite projection of a little blonde twink just trying to chase his dream. especially when you consider how weird buxton is about other drivers. his fernando article is equally weird and projection-y and shows that buxton is incapable of exploring beyond the surface. even his florida winter series diaries, which were supposed to be about him and his experiences still managed to save space for buxton being weird about max verstappen and lance stroll, both who were about 15 at the time. i just can't take him seriously as a person or a journalist, and i think that his writing shows more of who he is than who his subjects, like nico, are 🤷🏿♀️

i adore girl! logan, like if she has zero fans then i'm dead! so seeing the update made my day amidst midterms season, so thank you!
but yes, i looooooove hearing logan's thought process and i also love how quickly she soaks in all the information that she is given. because logan isn't taken seriously and probably doesn't get the same attention from other people as her male counterparts. so i feel her hunger this chapter— that hunger for good advice especially from someone like jenson; that hunger to get her name out there by taking a chance with an upstart hire and her hunger to be on top of the podium. god, i am so excited for her to take the world by storm (even more because she is already an icon).
and also, having logan have the (potentially but probably) backing of nico and jenson is perfect. especially nico, who has been an advocate for women in sports and a certified girl dad. i think having them, two world champions, as an immediate well of knowledge is making me so giddy. i think nico will be her biggest defender (besides her family and sister ofc), will not let journalists or the hosts to doubt or discredit her in typical rosberg energy.
ALSO THE TRIO <\3 MY BELOVEDS </3 liam and yuki coming to her defences ):
and yes, i can imagine yuki's excitement at the arrival of L² in f1 esp since he probably mentions them like ... all the time ... (which he does with liam which is so sweet). but NOT TO MENTION THE PREMA TRIO ??? very excited for oscar to give the heart eyes energy towards logan; her being blissfully unaware ("omg new bestfriend!) and fred being an unwilling third wheel.
thank you again for this new chapter because ugh its so good. also are you surviving the break or are you also going insane? AND ALSO LOGAN TO INDYCAR POTENTIALLY? a win for us i think
— sunnie ☀️
Sunnie, I missed you ♥️ So happy, that I could brighten your day :3
If I didn’t have fem!Logan I’d probably gone completely insane tho, but the break is generally treating me well. Nevertheless I’m ready to watch this gaggle of men drive in squiggly circles again. Also manifesting for Logan to get an Indycar seat, I was sooo happy when he finally posted on Instagram again today about his whereabouts 😍
You’re right, if boy Logan felt kinda lonely and starved for attention, it’s unfortunately ten times worse for fem!Logan. She has to be a sponge in that regard, because even though she knows the future, she cannot say if the people that helped her along the way the first time, will do it this time around too. That’s why she hit up Nico, because she knew that since he’s that champion for women in sports, the likelihood that he would help her, would be high.
I don’t want to diminish the role he’ll play in the story, but he was a kinda fail-safe for Logan in the case Jenson would’ve said no. Again, with Jenson too, she knew the likelihood would’ve been high that he would help, but this Logans fail-safes have fail-safes have fail-safes. The prerequisite for her taking revenge at James is getting into F1 which is currently her highest objective.
Also, on the topic of Logan’s grid parents. You’ve nailed it completely. Nico has birthed Logan himself and he will not accept slander of any kind towards her. That’s his daughter for all he is concerned, the heir to the Rosberg dynasty, nobody will discredit her 💅And Jense is the quintessential proud father. He’ll do anything to make his daughter happy. Also he’d definitely put Mark and Nando on babysitting duty if he’s off racing Le Mans or something 🤭
2020 will bring the rise of the Prema Trio™️ and probably a little bit of jealousy by our resident Kiwi bc social distancing bans him from seeing Logan as much and Yuki’s off to F2 (so he doesn't even have anyone he can cry to in person about it). But I’ll make up for it with them trying their hand at streaming, since the pandemic will still be a thing

I do wonder if part of what seems like everyone going for Oscar is just trying to get a reaction from him. Like for a rookie, he's doing very well and yet he's very chill about it. Nico (Rosberg) was trying to get him all excited about his first (sprint) win and he was just like yeah it was great, cool, but then just shrugged it off. I really understand all the comparisons between him and Kimi, though Kimi on the radio could be a bit of a hot head, lol - shoom anon
I’m not sure anyone would risk position in a race just to poke him like that. I really do think they’re testing the waters, seeing what kind of defence he’s going to put up and whether he’s too scared to fight them. And he’s not.
I like that Oscar is calm. To me it shows that he’s not easily goaded by hype or attention, which is what you absolutely need as a rookie on the ride.
Bring back Kimi.

Plus, if he made the Red Bull look better than it was, why wasn't he the one winning championships in it? Why did Vettel get all that action when all Ricciardo got was a handful of race wins? //
I have to say that when seb won his titles Daniel was either not in f1, or was with hrt and toro Rosso. When seb and Daniel were teammates Daniel won races, not seb who just won 4 straight world titles. Just had one of the most dominating seasons to date at the time. And they had the big regulations change as well. They switched to hybrid engines and the Mercedes dominance began with Lewis and with nico. Daniel got p3 behind both Mercedes’ in 2014 because he was the only driver apart from Lewis and nico that won races that year.
And the Renault engine was tricky after that. But Daniel still managed to fight Mercedes. Let’s be real nico rosberg said that Daniel is not someone you want to be pitted around. He will fight for his position. Because Mercedes even with their rocket ships couldn’t get past his defending.
Fair enough. I don't have a problem with someone defending Ricciardo's driving and am happy to publish that defence (especially as it shows the rude Dan Stans that I'm prepared to be reasonable when I'm not just being attacked because I dared to call out their darling). I still maintain that he's not the fantastic driver he or his stans assume him to be though. He is, like most F1 drivers, an also-ran and I genuinely do not believe that he was ever a championship contender. If your opinion is that he was, that's fine too; we can agree to disagree.

Nelson Piquet fined for racist and homophobic comments about Lewis Hamilton
Piquet won the world title in 1981, 1983 and 1987 Three-time Formula 1 world champion Nelson Piquet has been ordered to pay five million Brazilian Reals (£780,000) for making racist and homophobic comments about Lewis Hamilton. The 70-year-old Brazilian used a racially offensive term in referring to Hamilton in an interview in 2021. Hamilton called for "archaic mindsets" to change after the footage surfaced. Piquet later apologised for his "ill-thought-out" racially abusive remark about the British Mercedes driver. Formula 1, Hamilton's Mercedes team and world motorsport governing body the FIA condemned Piquet's comments where he discussed the accident between Hamilton and Red Bull driver Max Verstappen, who is the partner of Piquet's daughter, on the first lap of the 2021 British Grand Prix. Piquet said he "made no defence" of the remarks, but added the term he used "is one that has widely and historically been used colloquially in Brazilian Portuguese as a synonym for 'guy' or 'person' and was never intended to offend". In another interview that surfaced later, Piquet used racist and homophobic language when describing how Hamilton missed out on the 2016 championship to Nico Rosberg. Seven-time world champion Hamilton is the sport's only black driver. The charges against Piquet were brought by four human rights groups, including Brazil's National LGBT+ Alliance, which wanted Piquet to pay 10 million Brazilian Reals for alleged moral damages. A Brazilian court ruled on Friday he must pay five million Brazilian Reals, with Judge Pedro Matos de Arrudo saying the amount of compensation was given "so that, as a society, we can someday be free from the pernicious acts that are racism and homophobia". via BBC Sport - Formula 1 http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/

Extreme E chooses Dorset to stage season finale of electric off-road racing series
The inaugural Extreme E off-road season is heading for the chequered flag on Army training ground in the South West of England, with its goal to promote electric vehicles and clean technology solutions whilst striving for a lower carbon future for the planet.
One of the Extreme E electric rally cars drives around the Bovington Tank Museum’s test track. On the 14 December the Army enabled the Bovington Future Power Symposium. The event was held at the Defence Battlelab and will enable high level engagement between senior military leaders and industry heads who are involved in new environmental and sustainable technology development. The end state is to highlight, how each organisation is developing its new equipment and techniques to enable future power to exist in extreme and arduous environments. The closing race of Extreme E, the sport for purpose electric off-road racing series, Season 1 finale, the Jurassic X Prix will take place in Bovington on the Army Estate on 18-19 December 2021. The area itself is key to the Army’s sustainability undertakings being home to the Defence BattleLab, a facility that provides the opportunity to develop new products and technologies. A big focus for the military is decarbonisation and electric vehicles play a pivotal role. The British Army has already invested £10 million in this sector, developing experimental hybrid-electric drive vehicles within its fleet in a bid to create a more sustainable military operation. “People are really pushing the boundaries with what they can do with electric motors, they are after all very simple. Basically, it’s just one moving part so in terms of reliability it’s great, especially for the military. We’re talking about electrification which is key and it’s not just talking about doing it, things are now actually being put into action”JENSON BUTTON MBE

The Army has jumped at the chance to support this ground-breaking, all electric event which will be hosted at Bovington Training Area and will help highlight the shared focus, of both Army and Extreme E, on sustainability and more specifically electrification.
Some of the biggest names in motorsport are involved with Extreme E. Teams owned by Sir Lewis Hamilton and Nico Rosberg are represented as well as former Formula One World Champion Jenson Button MBE, who both owns and drives with his JBXE team:
Mr Jenson Button stood with Staff Sergeant Ben De Ronde REME, outside Jenson’s team tent at the Extreme E off road race series.

One of the main aims of the event is to highlight climate change issues both here and around the globe and take up the fight against environmental damage it causes.
The British Army is committed to both mitigating its environmental impact and exploring the use of electric vehicles as power solutions on the battlefield.

“With Extreme E’s support, we will continue to highlight the environmental importance of the area and demonstrate the ongoing work undertaken by the British Army with the Defence Infrastructure Organisation (DIO) to ensure its longevity as both beautiful countryside and an effective training area. Combined with the Army’s investment in, and development of sustainable vehicles, this will allow us to continue to maintain our world-renowned operational edge.”MAJOR GENERAL SIMON HUTCHINGS OBE, DIRECTOR OF JOINT SUPPORT, STRATEGIC COMMAND

Combined with the Army’s investment in, and development of sustainable vehicles, this will allow us to continue to maintain our world-renowned operational edge.”
Originally devised in 2018 Extreme E event racers compete over two days, on an off-road course around five miles in length. Each race takes place over a two-lap run with a driver swap required at the end of the first with the contest consisting of qualifying, semi-final, and final sprints.
And as Jenson Button explains, this form of motorsport is tackling diversity head on too:
“Extreme E is special because you have to have a girl and a boy in the team. At the start of the year the guys were quicker than the girls because they’ve got more experience but over time the girls have come to their pace because of their dedication. They are putting in so much work and time to develop. Over the last couple of races, they’ve been as quick as the guys and sometimes quicker.”
The Army aims to decrease emissions and scale-up the transition to renewables, thus contributing to the UK’s aim to be net zero by 2050. These efforts have already started with the Army piloting electric armoured vehicles and soldiers benefiting from new carbon efficient accommodation, delivered as part of the £45-million Net Carbon Accommodation Programme (NetCAP)5
The programme is being part-funded using money from a £200-million investment to improve armed forces accommodation, which was announced by the Defence Secretary last summer.
The MOD is investing more than £35 million of this funding, in addition to funding from the British Army, into its nationwide programme, which aims to improve facilities for troops when they are training away from their permanent barracks.
38 new carbon efficient accommodation blocks, providing more than 1,700 bed spaces, will be installed across the UK Defence Training Estate by the Defence Infrastructure Organisation (DIO), working with industry partners. The remainder of the £200-million investment is being spent on Service Family Accommodation and training accommodation and improvements to Single Living Accommodation in Army barracks, RAF bases and Naval establishments.

Tuesday 21st February 2017
Good Morning Gentle Reader… As I was walking Bella this morning, I started thinking about the Super Yacht that Gibraltar has impounded owned by a Russian billionaire because the German shipbuilder says he still owes 15.3m euros (£13.3m; $16.3m) in fees. The claim has kept Andrey Melnichenko's Sailing Yacht A stuck in Gibraltar, a British territory, since Wednesday…. OK He’s worth $13.2 Billion and aged 44 was born in a communist country, I know he got his money from Fertilizer, Coal and Stocks and Shares.. But how??? Just one of the things that goes through my head at 4:00am when I’m looking forward to coffee.. Just Asking….
THREE PEOPLE FOUND DEAD IN WATER TANK IN AUSTRALIA…Three people have died in a water tank in Australia in a suspected case of carbon monoxide poisoning, police say. The two men and a woman, all in their 60s, were members of the same family. Police said one of the men collapsed while cleaning the empty concrete tank, prompting his wife and brother to go to his aid before they also collapsed. Authorities would investigate whether dangerous petrol fumes contributed to the deaths, said New South Wales Police Supt Andrew Koutsoufis. "There were high levels of poisonous gas in the water tank by the time police got there," he said. "A petrol [water] pump being used the clean the tank ... may have been the cause of the build-up of fumes at the bottom of the tank."
INDIAN WEDDINGS: CURB SOUGHT ON EXCESSIVE SPENDING…The worst excesses of the Indian wedding industry may soon be curbed if a new bill is approved. The proposed bill will not only limit the number of guests and dishes served to avoid waste, but also put a "tax" on the most extravagant newlyweds. Those who spend over 500,000 rupees ($7,500; £6,000) will have to give 10% of the overall cost to poorer brides to help them pay for their weddings. It comes amid rising anger over the huge sums being shelled out by some. In November, the five-day wedding of businessman and ex-state minister G Janardhana Reddy's daughter, Brahmani, with an estimated cost of about 5bn rupees ($74m; £59m), prompted outrage as millions of Indians struggled with a cash flow crisis. Among the extravagances were gold-plated invitation cards fitted with LCD screens, costing 10m rupees.
MICHAEL FLYNN LEAK 'COULD BE FROM THE WHITE HOUSE'… National Security Adviser Michael Flynn has been forced to resign in extraordinary circumstances after misleading the vice president and the FBI about conversations he had had with the Russians. However his resignation has not drawn a line under the affair. The attention now switches to the President and how he is going to fix the problems within his team.
SOUTH CHINA SEA: US CARRIER GROUP BEGINS 'ROUTINE' PATROLS…. The USS Carl Vinson is no stranger to the region . US aircraft carrier the USS Carl Vinson has started what it calls "routine operations" in the South China Sea, with a fleet of supporting warships. The deployment comes days after China's foreign ministry warned Washington against challenging Beijing's sovereignty in the region. China claims several contested shoals, islets and reefs in the area. It has been constructing artificial islands with airstrips in the South China Sea for a number of years. China has built islands on reefs and, says a think tank, is building military facilities on some. Flying close to Beijing's new islands. The aircraft carrier was last in the South China Sea two years ago, for exercises with Malaysia's navy and air force and has made 16 voyages to the region in its 35 years of US navy service. US Defence Secretary James Mattis said during a recent trip to Japan that the Trump administration saw no need for "dramatic military moves" at the stage. The statement appeared to repudiate comments on the subject from Secretary of State Rex Tillerson, who told senators during his confirmation hearings that China should be prevented from reaching the disputed islands. On Wednesday, Chinese foreign ministry spokesman Geng Shuang said: "We urge the US not to take any actions that challenge China's sovereignty and security."
HERE’S LOOKING AT YOU.. KID…. Advertisers Envision a Future of Facial Recognition…While many worry Big Brother already knows far too much about our lives — what we watch, who we know, what we eat — others say we ain’t seen nothin’ yet. Blippar, an app that scans and recognizes images and faces, is merging machine learning and augmented reality into a “facial network.” As the marketing world dreams of future technology, some think consumers will reject phone-based facial recognition as going too far, while others contend that we’ll accept anything in exchange for micro-targeted advertising.
OUR MARMITTE IS SAFE …IT’S GOOD TO KNOW WHEN YOU’RE NOT WANTED. $143 Billion Kraft Heinz-Unilever Deal Called Off… Kraft Heinz went public with a bid for its European rival Friday — reportedly despite being told that Unilever didn’t want a takeover. Now the American company’s dream of creating the world’s second-largest consumer goods group is no more, and Unilever’s stock dropped 8 percent Monday morning on the news. It’s still seen as a victory for Unilever’s CEO, however, for fighting back against the takeover, and as a defeat for Kraft Heinz, which many believe acted too hastily.
AND FINALLY… MERCEDES FORMULA 1 BOSS TOTO WOLFF AND NON-EXECUTIVE CHAIRMAN NIKI LAUDA have signed new deals to stay with the team until the end of 2020. Their new contracts coincide with the duration of Mercedes' own current commitment to F1. In common with the rest of the teams, Mercedes will begin negotiations for beyond 2020 with new owner Liberty Media during this year. Wolff retains his 30% shareholding in the team and Lauda his 10% stake. Team boss Wolff joined Mercedes from Williams in February 2013, and Lauda took up his position in late 2012. The deals conclude a busy winter of off-track activity for Mercedes, who have dominated the sport since the advent of turbo hybrid engines in 2014 with three consecutive world title doubles. Mercedes have signed Valtteri Bottas as Lewis Hamilton's team-mate this season, with the Finn replacing world champion Nico Rosberg, who announced his retirement five days after winning the title last November.
Well Gentle Reader I hope you enjoyed our look at the news from around the world this, Tuesday morning…
Our Tulips today are Purple Red and Golden Yellow in the rain...
A Sincere Thank You for your company and Thank You for your likes and comments I love them and always try to reply, so please keep them coming, it's always good fun, As is my custom, I will go and get myself another mug of "Colombian" Coffee and wish you a safe Tuesday 21st February 2017 from my home on the southern coast of Spain, where the blue waters of the Alboran Sea washes the coast of Africa and Europe and the smell of the night blooming jasmine and Honeysuckle fills the air…and a crazy old guy and his dog Bella go out for a walk at 4:00am…on the streets of Estepona…
All good stuff....But remember it’s a dangerous world we live in ….. Be safe out there…

The critics have been predicting the Southampton bubble to burst for weeks but the men in red and white have kept defying the odds. Koeman knows with 27 games to play, the job is far from complete.

Formula One 2019 season preview – is this Lewis Hamilton’s toughest Mercedes title defence yet?
Lewis Hamilton will be looking at six of the best as he prepares to defend his drivers championship ahead of the new Formula One season.
The five-time world champion is again favorite to leave his rivals for dust over the 21-race campaign that starts at this weekend's Australian Grand Prix and ends at the Abu Dhabi desert in December
But there are stories all over the 10-team, 20-driver grid and ahead of another season Sportsmail's reporters look at the key questions.
Lewis Hamilton won his fifth world championship at the Mexican Grand Prix in 2018
Will Hamilton facing his toughest fight yet at Mercedes to defend his title?
JONATHAN McEVOY: From outside the team, yes, but there will be no repeat of the internal battle with Nico Rosberg that needled him so much. Ferrari seem strong and Red Bull will develop well under design guru Adrian Newey’s hand. It should be a good fight.
JOE DOWNES: Yes, because for the first time his best may not be good enough. Ferrari have the quicker car again, but will have learned from last year's strategy and development blunders and appear more united under Mattia Binotto.
DAN RIPLEY: The last couple or seasons have seen Ferrari and the Mercedes front row monopoly, and now they may have the edge. Hamilton is in his toughest campaign since his first season at Mercedes but he will still be at the front.
Lewis Hamilton and Mercedes appeared to be slightly off the pace of Ferrari in winter testing
MATTHEW SMITH: Every winter we suggest the rest of the field are catching up with Mercedes, and every season the German steamroller carries on regardless. Hamilton has his ruthless eye on history and, as much as the fan in me wants to see a tight title battle, championship No. 6 looks to be on the cards.
NATHAN SALT: I don't think so. While Ferrari have been smart in recruiting Charles Leclerc, he lacks experience competing at the front of the grid. Sebastian Vettel remains his biggest threat but errors appear to be creeping into German's drives if last season is anything to go by.
How under threat is Bottas at Mercedes given how much of a team player is he?
JM: Bottas should not be there now. He clearly failed last year. But he suits Lewis and makes for an easy life. Just allowing for that I think he needs to buck up if he is to survive the cut again.
JD: He insists he can beat Lewis. He can't. One-year rolling deal proves he's simply keeping the second seat warm and they're queuing up to take it. Esteban Ocon is first in line.
Valtteri Bottles went the whole of the 2018 season without a win for title winners Mercedes

Dec 1: Abu Dhabi (Yas Marina)
DR: Strangely I consider his role close to perfect. Quick enough to bag points but passive enough to never rock the boat and hurt Hamilton's season the way Nico Rosberg used to. Why would Mercedes risk losing that dynamic by drafting in Ocon for instance, who loves a squabble with a fellow driver (ask Perez or Verstappen)?
MS: Bottas is in an odd situation – he's in this race seat for what he brings to his team mate, rather than what he can provide as a driver in his own right. I feel Mercedes wants to bring Esteban Ocon into the No 2 seat next season, unless the Finn produces a marked improvement on last season.
NS: In short: not much. Hamilton must love having a "wingman" like Bottas with him at Mercedes. The Finn took issue with Toto Wolff's use of that in Hungary last season but it is true. Unlike predecessor Nico Rosberg, Hamilton can rest easy knowing Bottas will never put himself above the team. Bring back Nico.
How much of a 'plague could Charles Leclerc be to Sebastian Vettel's title challenge?
JM: Vettel has been given a public indication he is No 1. It remains to be seen how Leclerc operates in the more rarefied air of Ferrari – a different proposition from Sauber. I think Vettel, refreshed, will win the internal battle.
JD: This will determine the championship. Ferrari have their stall out early, insisting they will favor Vettel. The early races suit Ferrari and so, if Leclerc makes the better start, Binotto will have an almighty headache. The 21-year-old is a future world champion and subservience does not make a champion. Just ask Seb.
DR: I'm convinced he has brought in to replace Vettel and not Raikkonen, with the German instead of taking Kimi's No 2 spot in the long run. Not that Ferrari will admit that. To me, Ferrari lost faith with Vettel and his endless mistakes last term and have already made their move to start building the team around the Monegasque.
Sebastian Vettel (left) has a new Ferrari team mate in Charles Leclerc (second right)
MS: I think this could be the story of the season. Leclerc was electrifying at times in a poor Sauber car last season. If he hits the ground running, I can't see how Ferrari can force him to play second fiddle to Vettel, especially if the German does not pick up from his 2018 slump. Don't rule out a Leclerc title bid.
NS: A real plague. You would be hard pressed to find an F1 fan who was not impressed why Leclerc's rookie season with Sauber. He regularly exceeded expectations in qualifying and with a far more competitive car at his disposal this season.
Will Max Verstappen finally have the machinery to launch a bid for the title?
JM : We'll soon find out. But from testing they look third-quickest. The Honda engine is three per cent down on the Mercedes. No.
JD: He's better placed without Ricciardo and Renault but, while Honda power should see them close the gap, boss Christian Horner admits reliability is a big unknown in the first year of their partnership. Like last year, expect the odd win and the odd blow up (from car and driver).
DR: Status quo I'm afraid for Max. Another great Red Bull chassis which just lacks the power unit punch behind it to trouble Mercedes and Ferrari on a regular basis. Still, it's good to see Honda looking like they've caught up a bit. F1 needs them to succeed.
Max Verstappen may be restricted to another year of trying to pick up just a few race wins
MS: If engine suppliers Honda go from their embarrassment with McLaren to title winners at Red Bull, that would be among the greatest turnarounds in F1 history. Verstappen seems to finally have his attitude in the right place (the Ocon confrontation was the exception rather than the rule). He is ready but are Red Bull?
NS: Getting away on record last August pinpointing 2020 as his best chance of a maiden world title but he is not a character happy to watch his rivals coast to the world championship. He's managed to weed out some silly errors from his drives and I just hope he's provided with a competitive – and ultimately reliable – car.
What chance do McLaren have a five-year stage drought ending?
JM: McLaren may luck in a stage but that's their only chance, I fear. They will be better than last season but that's not saying much.
JD: Unless there's another crazy race in Baku, no chance. They're finally turning the corner, but just scoring points is tough given how tightly packed the midfield is.
DR: McLaren are heading in the right direction at long last but they look only capable of marginal gains this term. They could benefit from a Wacky Races type GP to land a stage but they should focus more on beating Renault for now.
McLaren enjoyed a productive winter testing program but still lay behind the front teams
MS: Unless they've been holding back in testing, regular top-down 10 finishes are more likely to be the goal unless they get a lucky break in a one-off race. Lando Norris and Carlos Sainz are both quick, but making the top three is a huge ask.
NS: Mercedes, Ferrari and Red Bull possess such an advantage over their rivals it looks increasingly difficult for McLaren to bridge the gap after such a poor season. I expect a much-improved season but it is too soon for an end to the stage drought.
Which new Briton on the block is the best set for his rookie year?
JM : George Russell – a bit older and wiser than Lando Norris, perhaps.
JD: Norris has the best car and will score most points, but George Russell will emerge with most credit. So terrible is his Williams that, to a large extent, the pressure is off. Expect him to outperform teammate Robert Kubica.
DR: Norris could end up getting a beat by Sainz and still have the possibility of claiming a productive first year. For Russell, hey, has no measure. Beat Kubica, or even thrash him, and he's only seen off a severely hampered team mate. No-win situation really for George, and that's before we mention the mess Williams are in!
Lando Norris (left) and George Russell make their F1 debuts after impressing in F2
MS: George Russell beat Lando Norris to the F2 title last year and is just as talented as the more heralded 18-year-old, perhaps because he is a more reserved character. However he may be down by being in a poor Williams. I'd be back Norris as the more likely at this stage.
NS: I just cannot bring myself to go on record and put Williams as the best in anything right now – apologies George Russell. The only way appears to be up for McLaren and Norris has shown his qualities in F2 – he's ready to make the step up.
Whose 'make or break' year is bigger at Renault – Ricciardo or Hulkenberg?
JM: Both are mid-tablers. Neither, for their commendable talents, is in demand by a top team. I think Ricciardo will see out his Renault contract and then walk away. He is building a property portfolio in America and that may grow into a preoccupation.
JD: Ricciardo. Must pounce whenever the big three teams fail and finish best of the rest – seventh – in drivers' standings to prove Renault's project is on track and his move from Red Bull was shrewd not stupid.
DR: This is it now for Hulkenberg. The chance to prove he can take on the big names in F1 – and maybe, just maybe land that overdue stage and finally catch the eye of a big team. Ricciardo has at least two years to get it right at Renault but time is running out for Nico.
Nico Hulkenberg (left) and Daniel Ricciardo will battle each other as Renault team-mates
MS: Ricciardo. The risk the Australian has tasks is career defining. If he can drag Renault onto the stage then the deserves to be seen as one of the great drivers of the 21st century. If not, then he is set for obscurity.
NS: I am not convinced F1 fans are expecting much more from Hulkenberg. He's legally competent and has out-qualified both Jolyon Palmer and Carlos Sainz in his last two seasons. Ricciardo was in a conversation for a Ferrari or Mercedes spot at one time and he will be expected to carve himself out as the side's undisputed No. 1.
How does Kubica make a success of his comeback at a struggling Williams?
JM: Just being on the grid is a victory. What a fabulous recovery. Beating his Williams team-mate Russell would do.
JD: Needs a miracle, but that's his business. Beating Russell and a double-figure points haul would represent a stellar comeback season. Don't think he will do either.
DR: I just want Kubica to be competitive, and that means keeping Russell honest and bagging a few points over the season. I'm not expecting much given he has effectively driven one handed.
Many Robert One fans will be hoping Robert Kubica can make a success of his comeback after a serious hand injury saw him drop out of the sport in 2011
MS: Growing up, Kubica was my favorite driver. I loved his attacking skill, his bravery, the underdog edge that came with driving for BMW rather than a more fashionable team. But the numbers don't lie – he is well off the pace. He needs time, reliability and consistency – and in a troubled team, I really fear this could turn into a nightmare.
NS: Much depends on the car he is provided with. Williams have bone dismal at best recently and have bone certainties to prop up the grid. Out performing rookie team mate George Russell wants to be the minimum he will expect of himself.
What are you tipping for a big surprise this season?
JM: I don't know what it will be but it may come this weekend in Melbourne. This place can throw up strange results.
JD: Alfa Romeo. Closer partnership with Ferrari, aggressive car design which looked quick through the corners in testing and the Kimi factor. A dangerous unknown quantity – how very Alfa.
Veteran Kimi Raikkonen has joined Alfa Romeo for 2019 following five seasons with Ferrari
DR: It's been rubbish for far too many years now, but we are long overdue a decent Monaco Grand Prix. Whether it comes in the form of a sprinkling or rain of some tire-related shenanigans I don't know but it would certainly be a surprise wouldn't it?
MS: Leclerc will finish above Vettel in the overall drivers points, Raikkonen will earn at least one podium for Alfa Romeo, and Alexander Albon – effectively an emergency choice for Toro Rosso – will be in and around the top 10 on a regular basis.
NS: I will go with Pierre Gasly. This one could come back to bite me but I expect Red Bull to make a real go of it this year and Gasly showed enough in spells in the Toro Rosso last year to suggest he can rise to the challenge.
Where are the championships heading?
JM: Drivers title: Hamilton. Constructors: Ferrari.
JD: I'm sold. Vettel and Ferrari.
Hamilton once again goes into the season as a favorite to win the world championship
DR: Hamilton to win the drivers crown in a final race Abu Dhabi showdown but Ferrari to pinch the constructors' title.
MS: Mercedes and Lewis Hamilton. Where else?
NS: Mercedes. Hamilton is still the man and if I was a betting man that is where my money would go. As a pairing I prefer the Ferrari pair – Bottas unselfishness infuriates me – but I fully expect Mercedes to be another double.

Nico Rosberg tells Lewis Hamilton’s rivals to make hay while the sun shines as he will bounce back ‘so damn strong’
Former world champion Nico Rosberg believes his old teammate Lewis Hamilton “starts to lose that edge” whenever a weekend doesn’t go his way, and has warned his Formula One rivals to make hay while the sun shines as he always “comes back so damn strong”.
Reigning champion Hamilton has made by all accounts a poor start to his title defence, having failed to win one of the first three races of the…

Lewis Hamilton calls for greater diversity in Formula One, says 'nothing has changed'
Lewis Hamilton has again accused Formula One of lacking diversity ahead of the opening race of the new season.
Lewis Hamilton says former Mercedes teammate Nico Rosberg was just trying to make headlines when he suggested inconsistency was his biggest weakness.
Ahead of the start of the 2018 F1 season, our experts have attempted to guess how the season will unfold.

The British driver, 33, had appeared alongside his rival Sebastian Vettel at the sport’s official press conference to answer questions on his championship defence.
But moments after he left the press conference room at Albert Park in Melbourne, Hamilton posted a video to his Instagram story in which he suggested F1 should do more to encourage participation from a wider range of ethnic backgrounds.
Four-time champion Hamilton is the sport’s first and only black driver and has six million followers on the social media platform.
Hamilton posted the video to his Instagram story. Instagram/lewishamilton
Hamilton recorded the 15-second video from his Mercedes team’s hospitality suite of a number of people in the paddock, and accompanied the clip with the words: “There’s barely any diversity in F1.
“Still nothing’s changed in 11 years I’ve been here.
“Kids, people, there’s so many jobs in this sport of which anybody, no matter your ethnicity or background, can make it and fit in.”
He ended the post with two hashtags, ‘diversity’, and ‘you can do it’.
Formula One elected not to comment on Hamilton’s remarks when contacted by Press Association Sport.
It is not Hamilton’s first run-in with the sport over race issues. Back in 2011, Hamilton said: “Maybe it’s because I’m black. That’s what Ali G says”, after he was penalised by stewards at the Monaco Grand Prix.
Hamilton is this year bidding to become only the third driver in F1 history to win the championship more than four times.
The Stevenage-born racer delivered some of the best displays of his career last term after beating Vettel to the championship with two rounds to spare.
