One of my goals in 2019 is to try to read more ARCs and be a bit more up on the new releases of the year. My first book for this goal is Crown Of Feathers by Nicki Pau Preto, a Canadian YA author!

Veronyka is a war orphen who dreams of nothing more than to become one of the legendary Phoenix Riders, bonding with a Phoenix of her own and being a great warrior and hero. After a stunning act of betrayal by her sister, Val, Veronyka sets off on her own to find the warriors, convinced that they weren’t all destroyed in the Blood War.

She succeeds, but runs into one little snag...they are only accepting male recruits. So Veronyka becomes Nyk and gets a position in the stables while seeking a sponsor for the next round of recruitment. What could go wrong?

Just her sister suddenly showing up ready to destroy the life and friendships Veronyka has started to build. Just an army of Empire soldiers with orders to destroy the Phoenix Riders once and for all.

I will admit that I had some issues getting into this book. I’m not sure if I was finding the story a little slow, or if I just wasn’t in the right head space when I started (it happens). In any case I pushed through, and am so glad I did. In the second half the book really took off and I very much enjoyed where the story went and the twist at the end. I appreciated the fact that, while the story felt properly completed, it also left a lot open for a sequel. I find that this is always a good thing as YA readers tend to enjoy series more than stand-alone books. This one will definitely be going on my recommendation list once it is released in February 2019. Can’t wait to start handselling!

The ability to communicate with animals has been criminalized, the phoenix riders have been all but destroyed, and Veronyka has just hatched a phoenix of her own. Tragedy comes between her and her sister, so Veronyka strikes out on her own. When she discovers phoenix riders training in secret, she must find a way around the fact that they're only training boys. This trilogy had me from the beginning, and through all three books. I loved CoF so much. The world-building for this series is amazing. The author put in a lot of history, proverbs, and lore in between chapters to build a rich world. Wow. This book! Heart of Flames is the incredible ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ sequel time Crown of Feathers by @nickipaupreto! I finished it over the weekend and I still am at a loss for words! ⁣ ⁣ I loved the first book. It was a super fun read full of gorgeous phoenixes and epic adventure. I only gave it four stars due to the amount of ya tropes. I was excited to read the sequel, but I had no idea what was in store for me. HEART OF FLAMES BLEW ME AWAY! ⁣ ⁣ Seriously everything about Heart of Flames was incredible. The story, the phoenixes, the relationships . . . it was all just so good. Nicki Pau Preto took everything from the first book and truly elevated it! There’s even more phoenix action, world building, and romance. And that ending!? Are you kidding me!? My heart can’t take waiting for the next book. ⁣ ⁣ Heart of Flames ups the POVs from three to five consistent POVs. Normally more than two to three POVs bothers me, but I actually loved all the different POVs. It added to the story and the world building to follow all these different characters throughout their journeys. ⁣ ⁣ I had to feature the gorgeous sprayed edge exclusive editions from @owlcrate! What's a book that you read this year that had a twist you didn't see coming? 🤯 For me, one of the biggest sneak attacks (and one of of my fave reads) of the year so far was Crown of Feathers! I CANNOT WAIT for the next installment! 🙈 . . I love animal / heroine pairings, too -- I think it calls to my horsey-loving heart. 🐎💗 The partnerships between people and their steeds / dragons / phoenixes. 🐲 Basically anything big enough to make you a scooby snack but they do your bidding anyway because they love you! 🤣 And this book definitely did not disappoint on that bond -- or on the sneak attacks to the feels! 🙊 TBR-worthy, my friends - TBR-worthy! 🙌 Not to mention, these books are just STUNNING. 😍 And I know after yesterday's book rainbow 🌈 post we all need more Red/Orange for our shelves. 🤣 . .
