Counterpoint to the counterpoint: A new age of romanticism and avant-garde will never happen if we give unjust praise to works that merely attempt to be great.
Understood, but my point is that it's a genuinely mixed achievement, not all bad, and may (only "may"!) look better in retrospect. It therefore doesn't deserve all the unthinking dispraise and mockery. Nick Pinkerton's review captures what's both effective and ineffective about it, noting all the limitations of theme, script, and design, but also arguing persuasively that its neo-Expressionist verve should be its main source of pleasure:
The proposition that our last, best hope for the future is a benevolent ruling-class technocracy ushering us into a new Eden of ’90s CD-ROM game graphics is not a particularly stirring one. Yet Megalopolis can be deeply moving, a spend-it-all splurge crackling with cinematic bravado: the screwily busy choreography of the meet-cute between Catilina and Julia, the eerie augury of a divine hand snatching the full moon from the sky, allegorical statues across the city slumping on their pedestals as if in a laudanum trance, shadows of writhing bodies projected onto the faces of skyscrapers to suggest a modern-day Pompeii, invocations of Gance, Griffith, Eisenstein, Clair. Catilina’s platitudinous public-forum sermonizing on possibility and potential is more eloquently expressed by the giddy ingenuity of Coppola’s filmmaking...

Looking back at the name auteurs who emerged in those bygone days when the word “Sundance” was in the air, their unifying attribute is loquacity. Smith, Tarantino, Spike Lee, Hal Hartley, Whit Stillman, Richard Linklater, the long-forgotten Edward Burns… all of them writer-directors, all of them given to filming great disgorgings of dialogue delivered in a signature style: Smith’s “dick and fart” jokes; Tarantino’s pastiche poptalk; Lee’s outer-borough motormouth arias; Hartley’s earnest, on-the-nose blank verse, etc. (Linklater, by virtue of inviting performers to lend their own voices to his films, is something of an outlier here—and has avoided the depths of self-parody plumbed by some of his peers.) Sifting through the now-wilted critical bouquets that once were flung towards the films of Todd Solondz, you will rarely encounter the phrase “mise-en-scène.” In Steven Soderbergh’s 1989 Sex, Lies, and Videotape, the prototype of the indie crossover, it is significant that the central male character, James Spader’s Graham, substitutes the discussion of sex for the actual physical act. Even the comparatively taciturn films of Jim Jarmusch revolve around conversation, though Jarmusch emphasizes the pregnant pause over the logorrhea. Some of this tendency towards garrulity in the ’90s indie may be attributed to the necessities of filmmaking on the cheap—it is, after all, quite a bit less costly to shoot a scene of two people talking in a room than it is to stage a multi-car chase on the 101. Of the filmmakers mentioned above who got a shot at a real budget, though, most kept their trademark patter coming on hot and heavy. The strength of the connection that’s formed out of affinity for a particular voice cannot be overstated. This is why so many mere writers, whose opinions almost no one listens to anymore, are insanely jealous of the bond that podcasters have with their listeners, earning the kind of money we ink-stained wretches wish we made by cultivating parasocial bonds with their deranged audiences. If I keep returning to Fassbinder’s films, part of the abiding allure is that of again hearing the particular cadences of his “voice,” though the dialogues may be spoken by Irm Hermann, Kurt Raab, or whomever, and I assume that this is the case with admirers of Tarantino and Smith as well. It should be noted that Tarantino, in the company of Avery, has recently launched a podcast, while Smith, an early adopter of the form, has been producing his SModcast since 2007 and, like Spike Lee—recipient of a “Thank You” in the Clerks credits—he has long padded his income with public appearances.

“If Shirley Stoler shows up in something you’re watching, chances are at the very least it’s not going to be boring - and she shows up in the damndest places, impossible to ignore when she shoulders her way on-screen. There she is, for example, dubbed into Italian to play the zaftig commandant in a German concentration camp in Lina Wertmüller’s Seven Beauties (1975), where she’s serviced by prisoner Giancarlo Giannini. And as nasty neighbor Mrs. Steve on the television show Pee-wee’s Playhouse, a toxic character axed after the first season in 1986, apparently because Stoler so rubbed Paul Reubens the wrong way. And in Frank Henenlotter’s Frankenhooker (1990), of which little more needs be said than it’s titled Frankenhooker. And as the pawnshop proprietress who whacks off Alec Baldwin’s digits in Miami Blues (1990), George Armitage’s adaptation of Charles Willeford’s blackly comic detective novel, in which her casting, per Armitage, was a homage to her breakthrough role in The Honeymoon Killers (1969), Leonard Kastle’s road trip through an all-American hellscape.”
/ From “All-American Medea: Shirley Stoler in The Honeymoon Killers”, Nick Pinkerton’s astute essay for The Criterion Collection, 22 March 2017 /
Born on this day: fiercely charismatic, menacing and memorable American character actress Shirley Stoler (30 March 1929 – 17 February 1999). If all Stoler did was star in vicious 1969 cult classic The Honeymoon Killers, her legacy would be secure. In addition to the credits Pinkerton cites above, she also crops up in Klute (1971), The Deer Hunter (1978) and Desperately Seeking Susan (1985) and (on TV) Charlies Angels, Miami Blues and soap operas The Edge of Night and One Life to Live. What a résumé! A persistent urban myth: that Shirley Kilpatrick – leading lady of el cheapo sci fi b-movie The Astounding She-Monster (1957) - and Stoler are one and the same person. To complicate things considerably: Kilpatrick died in 1971. Portrait of Stoler by John Deane.

hey brian, I was wondering if you had any recommendations on film criticism/theory/reviews. are there any critics/thinkers you deeply admire that write well and have challenged your ways of seeing/thinking that you believe would help in better appreciating the medium?
i probably could have gone much longer on this five years ago but my brain did some sort of system reboot and lost all the memories ive had consuming film reviews, criticism, etc this ask makes me want to dust off that book i have of pauline kael capsules on my shelf lol anyways here's list of some fav critics/people to seek out if ur eager to dig deeper into cinephilia:

*also, i do like ebert but as i get older i realize i enjoy other lesser known critics a bit more+his taste in the latter years (21st century) is kinda wack tbh. 2007, one of the consensus last great years of american cinema, his best of the year was juno (i know, i know, it's an opinion but still lol) . cannot say he wasn't a formative figure, him being the most well known, most accessible film critic, and did the thing the best critics do in elevating, shedding light on artists they believe feel deserved of recognition/putting more eyes on their work.
**i think there's more people i could name-drop but i havent read enough, or been exposed to them as frequently, to go all-in on an endorsement of them/their work
