looking for a new piece of xenofiction
ask the creator if their xenofiction is Watership Down or Warrior Cats
they don’t understand
pull out illustrated diagram explaining what is Watership Down and what is Warrior Cats
they laugh and say ‘It’s good xenofiction sir’
look inside
it’s Warrior Cats

Espio says a lot of proverbs and idioms.
And here's a couple Japanese ones you might not know about:
Tumblr media
"Being kicked by a horse" is a Japanese proverb. It's based off an old poem (dodoitsu) from the Edo period:
人の恋路を邪魔する奴は馬に蹴られて死んじまえ Hito no koiji o jama suru yatsu wa uma ni kera rete shinjimae
People who meddle in other's love affairs, get kicked by a horse and die.

When you get a C rank in Sonic Heroes, Espio says the Japanese idiom: 平平凡凡 heihei bonbon
Heibon (平凡) means "ordinary" and repeating it like this emphasizes something as very ordinary or mediocre.
When you get a D rank in Sonic Heroes (he also says it in some event dialogue in SHTH 2005) Espio says the Japanese proverb: 油断大敵 yudantaiteki
This is translated to: Carelessness is one’s greatest enemy. (in this case) It can also be translated as: don't let your guard down / danger comes soonest when it is despised.

Sometimes I try to explain what I do on this blog to my agent and whether this counts as actually promoting my books and I'm like, look, on the plus side, when my adult books come out I'll know I've got a ready audience of people who want Weird Medieval Stuff, because all I ever do is throw Weird Medieval Stuff into the void and see what happens next. But currently, no, I would not say I am doing a great job of Being An Author In Public, because I do probably spend more time talking about obscure novels from 1894 and their possible 17th-18th century inspirations than, you know, my own books. People seem to like it this way and I am just giving them what they want. Also, I need SOMEWHERE I can be deeply odd about in-progress research and the Bluesky character limit really cramps my style.

It's really a good thing that the narrator's job only needed him to travel domestically. if he stepped one foot in South Korea I think tyler would have instantly manifested and exploded on the spot. the convenience stores alone would have driven him to madness. on the other hand Fight Club/project mayhem itself would have a large pool of frustrated (and slightly misogynistic) young men to compel into committing domestic terrorism. until it started actually destroying property project mayhem would probably be seen as just another ol' cult (surprisingly common in korea).
korean fight club very interesting concept.... lots of highly educated young people without enough jobs to support them... lots of angry young men (korean fight club would be a LOT more misogynistic than regular fight club).... the Work Culture.... the Social Stigmas... the low birth rate... the Consumerism.... very very interesting... its like a lot of what Tyler was preaching against x10. obviously there are specific cultural contexts in the US that makes fight club work so well but korean fight club has potential methinks

through the atomic way fare
“Speak up.” Mace says, but Capa doesn't know him. Silence. “God,” He turns to leave. Capa watches him with blue eyes, remembers the sickening crack of his leg, the way he fell back through the water the first time around. He wants to save him more than he needs to love him.
“Something in the space-time.” Capa says, “It brought me back alive.”
-
Or, Robert Capa - again and again and again.
