Since today is International Autism Day and since I am on the spectrum, I feel it is right to dedicate a small post to it. I was diagnosed in my twenties, after spending a lifetime going from one doctor to another, without anyone understanding anything about me. The first time I heard the word Asperger's (i.e. a way to define high-functioning autistics like me) was thanks to Fantastic Beasts, because it was stated that Newt Scamamder has Asperger's. For this reason I would also like to thank the world of Harry Potter for arriving at a diagnosis, and this draws attention to the importance of representing diversity, not only to have a more truthful picture of reality, but because this could concretely help someone.

Do you know when in CoG I accepted that that was really dumbledore and more dumbledore as we know him from the books than the one we met in the movies?

When Newt asked him a straight question and he went on about a seemingly unrelated anecdote that ultimately turned out to be absolutely meaningful foreshadowing, but at that time seemed really random and honestly just exasperating.

That's the dumbledore I know and love!

Sadistic Gifts: Playing the invisible enemy

I’ve recently integrated in this group of friends, they’re quite awesome. They celebrate both invisible friend and enemy, and this year, well, I also got in on that.

The rules are quite simple, you either gift a:

... thing laying around your house. Just typical junk you’d like to get rid of but haven’t gotten around to it yet. The classical bad-friend-gift.

... thing they wouldn’t like having. And cheap. The point of this is for it to be cheap and not thoughtful at all.

And you have some laughs.

But you may also get sadistic  with the gift wrapping.

We love Harry Potter. I love games. I love puzzles. And I love messing around with people’s heads.

And, being my first time... Well, I kind of overkilled it.

I decided to make a replica of Harry Potter and The Goblet of Fiyah’s Golden Egg. Inside, there would be another three decorated eggs, which are the gifts themselves (I decided to bend the rules and gave each an egg, instead of just my enemy, and they allowed me to). They will be pink, because one of them hates pink, the other one doesn’t need more useless stuff laying around, and the third, well, she is not really into escape rooms and this [the gift itself] would be a puzzle you would find at an escape room.

The Golden Egg will be tied and a lock will prevent them from opening it, so they need to figure out the combination.

Once locked, it is wrapped in three layers of gift wrapping, each of a color. Then wrapped in white briddles, then into a box, then the box is wrapped. And the box has a letter and three pieces of paper, each with a riddle about our friend group, the answers being numbers, and the numbers the key to the lock. The order? Well, I hope they remember the order of the gift wrappings :P

I added a little letter in top of the box. I will tell them that I met this strange guy while we were at the Harry Potter studios, and I was alone, he would keep talking about how wrong everything was and was quite funny and so I gave him my email, and he sent me this box for us to keep for a while. Then the letter explains just a bit more, and is signed Newt Scamander, and thus the story begins.

Here’s the process. If you like any of it, ask me for a tutorial ;) Though you may find it very straightforward.

So... Yeah.

I hope they do (not) like it! :D

More thoughts on salamander eyes

(Because one can never think about them too much.)

I love the shift in Tina during and after that scene. Before it, she is profoundly agitated by the feeling of broken dreams. She’s just barely keeping a lid on her agitation, like a delicacy in a pot, simmering, pushing up the lid with heated bubbles that pop and drip down the sides in lieu of tears.

In the course of and after that scene, Tina eases, realizing her personal dreams of Newt aren’t dead, but rather they’re even more alive in ways that he would not have been bold enough to hint at in his letters — wanting her happiness, carrying her photo, thinking about her eyes in language that is adorkably romantic and incredibly hot.

Every time I watch the scene I melt in fire in water, in dark water. Every. time.

Then for the remainder of the film, we get to see relieved and hopeful Tina.

Relieved and hopeful Tina is the softest creature.
