Friendly Village: a second grade trip
Remembering the dissonance of a second grade reader in the Bronx
PS 25 in 1905.  I attended some 55 years later. The school is still there, on 811 E 149th St. NYC.gov That diasporic feeling  There is no one place or time when diaspora occurs…it is a perpetual space of change and displacement. An awareness. It’s a process I share with many, whether by blood, place or experience, with locations linked by oceans and shaped by the relentless squeeze for money…

My favorite comic run is spider-girl. It has over 100 issues. Do you want to know what issue the omnibus stopped at? Issue 67. They don't even have collections of the relaunch. If they continued to make the omnibus, I would buy them, but that would be too smart for Marvel.
comic sales are down because the industry is inaccessible and expensive, not because piracy exists
Higher piracy rates are what happens when you make buying comics expensive, difficult, platform-dependent, and inherently exclusionary while pretending trades and digital don't count as sales.
if any single comic book company decided to be a competent publishing company for even a year comic piracy rates would plummet

comics publishers will ask why comic sales have gone down so much in the last few decades and it shockingly turns out they used to be sold in gas stations/newsstands/supermarkets like...

King's Cross has been one of London's busiest hubs for centuries.

Kings Cross, London in 1899
The newspaper billboard in the foreground appears to refer to the execution of Mary Ansell who poisoned her sister Caroline to get the proceeds of an insurance settlement. Ansell was hanged on 19th July 1899

small headcanon, at one point, Freddy "accidentally started a gang"
Some lines are made by @the-brash-spud
I could see it as him saving the kids who were a part of the gangs/criminal organization that treated them poorly and put them as part of the association of newsboys (where he is also president over) as part to reform them, have them earn money the less criminal way and these kids mistakenly thought they are under another criminal organization and that the newsboys are just a cover up just like their old jobs in criminal organizations where they hid it under with presentable business operation. Since the other kids over there kept calling Freddy, "Prez" or "president", they assumed he's the head boss of their new crime organization just for little boys like them now
F: "Alright, I have stationed your newstands on this part of New York City, and if there's anything that goes wrong, let me know, alright?"
-meanwhile what they hear-
"this territory is ours, don't lose it to other gang members and protect anyone in the area, and yes tommy, you can point your tommy gun to shoot at their balls, i use a shotgun crutch to do the same anyway"
At one point, Freddy tells them to ask the new suburban neighbourhood if they want deliveries, and they understand it as "intimidate those people Into agreeing," and Freddy then has to go door to door next day apologising
Freddy: "give me strength, I am this close to giving up"
Kids:" but aren't cha proud of us boss?"
Freddy:"i-"
The kids look up to him expectantly with wide adorable eyes
Freddy:"...I think you lot could do better, I am happy that you are improving... but I don't want to see headlines of Gang members having their willies shot next time."
The boys:"got it! We'll remove their fingernails instead!"
Freddy:"NO!"

Option A
Noel didn't read the newspaper everyday, but it had been hard to not hear people talking about the news as she got her morning coffee. She froze at the mention of Silas, mind thinking on so many things. How was it possible? Why now? Her stomach turned as she grabbed her coffee order and sought out Jas. It didn't take long to find her, and Noel thanked the universe for that. Fear struck her as she watched Jas push past someone. Walking steadily towards her, Noel quickly apologized to the person Jas had pushed past. "Sorry about that! Have a good day." Turning to Jas, a hand instinctively tried to grab her sister's arm, scared that if she didn't grab her Jas might disappear from her sight. "Hey. We should talk." A pause. "Do you, uh, want a coffee?" Probably not the best think to say right now, but Noel was having a hard time not thinking so loudly. She'd always prefer if her thoughts stayed with her especially about this. "Maybe we can go somewhere else to talk? I know a place."

Option A:
"No, no, no, no," A curse broke from Jas' lips as her fingers curled into fists around the paper in hand. Her face scrunched up as she tried to keep her heart beat steady as a wave of anger and fear hit her at once like a ton of bricks. Silas was out. After all these years, he was fucking free which could only mean one thing. He'd be coming for her and it was finally time for him to collect on that favor she owed dear old dad. If Silas was coming, she couldn't stay here. She couldn't- she couldn't endanger all of the people in this town. All of the people she cared about. She couldn't- she couldn't breath. Fuck. "Out of my way," She mumbled out as she pushed past another, barely registering that they were there as the words from the paper she had picked up from the news stand played in her mind, over and over again.
Tumblr media
Option B:
"Were you reading that? No? Okay," Elif snatched the paper clean out of the other person's hand as she continued to go around collecting every newspaper she saw in sight. She might not have known of who Silas Chamberlain was herself, but she knew the basics and knew that the last thing Jasmine and the Reeds needed was the entire town gossiping about their family when they were likely only just finding out about the news themselves. " 'cuse me," She flashed the unsuspecting civilian a smile as she plucked their paper out of their hand as well to join the huge stack she had bought out from the news stand. She wasn't quite sure what she was going to do with a hundred copies of the same paper, but she figured, worse come to worse, Nico and her could always start a pack bonfire or something.
Tumblr media
Option C:
"No comment," Meena flashed the reporter an eased smile as she made her way down the steps of Town Hall that had been abuzz ever since the Lunar Cove Times had scooped them on the fact that the notorious criminal, Silas Chamberlain, had escaped from prison. It had been a while since she had last heard that name and while her thoughts laid elsewhere she knew the council would only be able to avoid this new elephant in the room for so long before a game plan as to how to deal with the threat that was the dark magic tyrant who was now roaming around. "You," She said, slowing to a halt as she caught a familiar face across the street from the crowds. "Walk with me?"
