Oh God, not again, you thought, spotting him of all people across the dance floor. Sunoo had the same sour expression on his face, but made his way over to you anyways. "A dance, prince Y/N?" he asked, a mocking lilt in his voice.

You should probably explain how you got into this situation. Your parents decided to host a ball at the Kims' castle as both families had an announcement to make. What that announcement is, well, they decided to tell everyone in the staff but not their kids.

"Do you know what this is even for?" Well at least you aren't the only one who's confused.

"No, nor do I care to tell you when i find out."

Sunoo let out a sigh of exasperation, rolling his eyes at you. "Come on, prince, I don't want anything to do with you either, but work with me here."

Ouch. That one kind of hurt. You know you tended to put on a front, but you still wanted Sunoo to care for you like you cared for him. Though that seemed a tad irrational, you supposed, seeing as you never let it on that you didn't actually completely despise him.

"Now about that dance, prince. What do you say?"

Building up your front again, you looked away. He was about to leave when you stuck your hand out. "I suppose… one dance won't hurt, hm?" You couldn't hide your smirk when you saw his eyes light up.

One dance turned into four, then nine, then you lost track as you danced the night away with Sunoo. But no, you didn't actually like him, not that anyone knew anyways. You could both agree on your disdain for each other, but no one would have guessed that you were anything but in love as you danced. And somehow, you didn't hate that idea.

Before long, trumpets sounded, and everyone turned their attention to the front of the ballroom to listen to the royal families' announcement.

King L/N started, "Now, we've been meaning to become closer with our neighboring kingdom, and we also acknowledge that prince Y/N is coming of age and should marry soon."

Oh no, please don't father. You really hoped this wasn't going where you thought it was. Or at least, you kind of hoped.

"Prince Sunoo is also nearing the time when he needs to take over reign, and we thought that the perfect idea would be to join our kingdoms together. We would like to announce the marriage of the Kim and L/N families through prince Sunoo and prince Y/N," King Kim finished.

The whole room erupted in cheers, but your attention was only on Sunoo, who looked over at you with a nervous yet excited expression.

Making your way back over to the prince's side, you look at the floor, shuffling your heels a bit. "Well, it looks like this won't be our last dance."

"Yeah, I was hoping it wouldn't be." You looked up in shock. It seems that he hadn't meant to say that out loud, but you were glad he did.

Since it seemed he didn't want to say anything else, you took a chance, and said, "Well, I don't know about you, but I'm not that upset about the marriage." Your gaze stayed on his face, gauging his reaction.

A blush painted Sunoo's features as he looked back at you. "You know what, I'm not either." And with that he looked at your lips and leaned in.

Maybe, just maybe, you loved prince Sunoo, and with the way he was kissing you, maybe he loved you too.

New things I tried: This is the first year I've really written a lot fanfic-wise, with 2023 being the first year I ever posted a fanfic, so the main new thing I tried this year was writing fanfiction. But other than that, some new things I tried this year were:

Grammarly: I'm not kidding, I got Grammarly like maybe a year ago? A year and a half ago? So while technically in 2023, I only started using it for fanfics in 2024. It feels crazy to think about, as I use Grammarly a lot now, but I'm glad I started using it then because it really does make a difference. (Not sponsored, lol)

My Hero Academia: I wasn't in the fandom before this year, but I've kinda become obsessed. I haven't written anything for it (yet), but the sheer number of like hundred thousand-word-long fics that there are is like heaven for me.

Yuri on Ice: I originally watched Yuri on Ice on YouTube in 2021, and I. Loved. It. I looked for a second season and was so excited to see that there was a movie planned, but, well... we all know how that went. I didn't really read many fanfics back then, but 2024 was the year for Yuri on Ice fanfics for me. (Notedly my YOI one-shot series Next Level, which currently has 6 fics and the 200+ YOI fics I've read over 2024)

Fic I spent the most time on: lookin' up now ('cause i am royalty), Luke Castellan/Percy Jackson (PJO). Rated T, 16/? chapters, 64,387. I know I keep mentioning it, but seriously this WIP is going to be long. I'm so excited to keep writing it, but the chapters take me forever and a day. 😭 I wish they didn't take me as long, but I think it's worth it for the longer chapters. This fic is what I always wanted to read myself, and I'm happy to be the one to give it to many readers who are also just as excited about it!

Fic I spent the least time on: Moonlight Sonata, Katsuki Yuuri/Victor Nikiforov (YOI). Rated G, 1,482. I was feeling really depressed at the time that I wrote this, and sometimes when I'm feeling really sad I listen to piano and instrumental music. So when this song came on, I got inspired to write. I wrote it in one night, editing, tagging, posting, and all.

Favorite thing I wrote: Moonlight Sonata is honestly my favorite thing I've ever written. It's the type of fic that I don't think many people read, but I loved writing it. It's just a simple story. (lookin' up now ('cause i am royalty) is also one of my favs, but I think that's pretty obvious at this point if you've read all of my previous answers)

Favorite thing I read: This is a tough one... I've read a lot of fics this year, but my top three (that I can think of right now) are:

We Forgot Peter by inkinmyheartandonthepage [Peter Parker & The Avengers (MCU), Rated G, 506,700]: This entire series is just ✨perfection✨. Sometimes angst is just the way to go, and seeing as I love the Avengers and Peter Parker, I just love this.

Leap of Faith by alighterwood and ErinWantsToWrite [Dick Grayson & Peter Parker (MCU & DC), Rated T, 460,010]/A Long Way From Home (And No Way Back) by Vivia_wants_boba [Batfamily Members & Peter Parker (MCU & DC), Rated T, 78,129]: More marvel Peter Parker fics, but this time these two are Peter Parker in Gotham fics. They’re pretty popular (for good reason!), and these two are the ones that I’ve been obsessed with.

The Collector by AwkwaAMO [Aizawa Shouta | Eraserhead & Midoriya Izuku (MHA), Not Rated, 136,945]: One of the best MHA fics I’ve read so far, it sort of covers a vigilante Izuku with a villain-ish quirk, which I love reading about. I do want to write an MHA fic at some point, maybe even in 2025.

Something I finished: 😬 Unfortunately I can’t really think of any fics or series I’ve finished this year (other than one-shots), but I think 2025’s the year for me. I might look at this at the end of next year and still be disappointed in myself that I didn’t finish anything, but I’m determined to at least try.

I followed the (slightly old) trend of Yuuri doing the first quad axel in my fic aptly named Quad Axel [Katsuki Yuuri/Victor Nikiforov (YOI), Rated G, 1,416] in June as well

Writing goals for 2025: My main writing goal for 2025 is to finish writing some of my WIPs, but I think another important one is to keep on top of updates. I haven’t been the best with updating all my fics in the last half of 2024, so in 2025 I want to make sure I don’t just spend all my time on one fic. It wouldn’t be that big of a problem if I actually finished that fic, but… my first goal is pretty indicative of the problem with that, lol.

Final thoughts: Overall I think 2024 was the first year I really dove head-first into fanfic. It’s been amazing to be able to write down any kind of story I think of and know that I can just upload it so that people who also enjoy the idea can see it. It’s also crazy that I wrote 130,000+ words, like I hope to be able to write even more in 2025, but still. It’s a lot.

This year I also got 32 subscribers to my AO3 profile, which I thought was crazy. I know many people subscribe to stories to keep track of any updates, but wanting to keep track of what I write? It’s amazing to think about. 😅

as the holiday season rolls around i think about my (unfortunately abandoned, deleted. i miss it.) animaniacs/newsies au, in which it roughly follows the wakko's wish plot.

in terms of characters, i recall definitively: sarah, davey, and les as yakko, wakko and dot respectively. pulitzer and katherine were the dr scratchansniff and hello nurse duo. wiesel and the delancey bros were representative of plotz and ralph. and snyder was king salazar.

on a stretch, i want to say: hannah was pip (but much less boring). jack and crutchie were similar to pinky and the brain (but not bent on world domination. can't remember the specific character changes i made for them).

truly don't remember the exact plans i had for the storyline besides the immediate similarities to the movie: les gets sick forcing davey to go out and work, but wiesel and delanceys steal his money. davey wishes on the wishing star and everyone races to reach it first. snyder tries to get the jacobs siblings killed. davey gets his wish and the whole town is restored to its former glory with the jacobs back on the throne. the end.

really sad i don't have the doc anymore because i wrote a super emotional 'davey returns home after a year' scene, followed immediately by him getting pissed and sassy with the delanceys. and i was super proud of the royalty-bedtime story! i researched polish folktales for inspo and i was really happy with how it turned out.

Valentine's Villains: Victory For Evil!

Thank you to everyone who participated in our Valentine Card Event this year, you guys had some fabulous suggestions! In the end, we received 289 valid submissions, though some of our villains got more love (and a little hate) than others. So, without further ado, our victors!

She's beauty, she's grace, she'll punch you in the face! Coming in first place, with 59 submissions, was the Daughter of the Demon herself, Talia al Ghul! Her most submitted word was "Queen", and love her or hate her, she certainly acts the part of royalty!

Our second place villain has a long history of being a fan favorite; it's actually why she was brought from cartoon character to comic book staple! Dr. Harleen Quinzell, better known as Harley Quinn, received 49 submissions, with her most submitted word being anarchist! A fitting descriptor for someone who both remains on Batman's most wanted list, has largely made the switch to antihero, and hates the federal government!

Our third and final winner of ultimate Valentine Villainy is none other than Argos, also known as Félix Fathom! Our boy received 46 submissions, and we're so glad to see him strutting his stuff for us this Valentine's Day!

Now, we've got more Villains to show some love too, but for the sake of sanity everyone else will be included on a new post. Thank you again to everyone who submitted! We really appreciate your enthusiasm for these characters, and we're very thankful that the only reason we had for dismissing any submissions was that some of them weren't single words.

Okay I'm gonna do this in three (3!) parts/posts bc there's a lot of outfits to talk about, and she's got three "eras" of costumes so it fits

Part 1 - Paper Mill Playhouse

1st Outfit: Carrying The Banner to I Never Planned On You

This outfit is excellent. Very posh and in-fashion, and appropriate for a morning walk. Her brooch and tie-pin are subtle accessories but quite fanciful. Her hat is also very appropriate, and the trim seems to match her tie which is a lovely touch. The lavender is a lovely shade, and throughout history purple has been both an expensive colour for fabric and associated with royalty, fitting for an upper-class young woman.

2nd Outfit: The Deli to Seize The Day

This outfit is near identical to the version used on Broadway, but with a few small differences: her waistcoat is double-breasted and has a long cut, sitting on her hips rather than her waist. Her shirt collar is rounded and turned down, and of course she wears a little tricorne hat, complete with ribbons in each corner. This is her working outfit, very professional looking like her walking attire.

3rd Outfit: King Of New York to Pulitzer's Office

This outfit seems to have been replaced by her more well-known orange outfit partway through the run. This version is much less pattern, with a white shirt with blue accessories: bow, buttons and belt. The skirt is less detailed too, and a more saturated shade of orange. This is Katherine Plumber when she isn't working. Not quite as formal or posh as her other outfits, and to the newsies her clothes likely wouldn't give away her true class

4th Outfit - Then I See You Again to The Finale

This is my favourite of Katherine's outfits in Paper Mill by far. We're back to purple, with a polka-dot shirt that continues Katherine's theme of silly patterns (a very good thing). Her skirt is hard to see in this image but it's a lovely dark purple, plain and unpatterned. The most noticeable feature of this outfit is her little bow-tie, possibly made of satin given the shiny texture. This still feels like a working outfit, but perhaps with a little more of Katherine's true fashion taste.

can be great! if proper research is done. i've never personally done it, and i don't think my knowledge of greek is strong enough/i would have to absolutely fight for my life to have it come up naturally between my characters i think lol

alright, buckle up buttercup! and allow me to introduce you to the absolute masterpiece that is newsies :)

Newsies is a 1992 disney movie musical directed by Kenny Ortega and famously(?) starring baby batman (17yo Christian Bale). The film featured twelve toe-tapping, knee-slapping songs by Alan Menken and Jack Feldman but unfortunately flopped at the box office because the world wasn't ready (it was kind of definitely disney's fault for not marketing correctly but I digress...)

Two decades later, because of a cult following of fans who discovered Newsies on VHS and countless "illegal" school productions of Newsies, disney revisited the project to capitalize on royalties and created a stage play adaption based on the film. They didn't realize this stage musical would end up being such a success and had intended to have an initial Paper Mill run before opening up licensing for schools. But, turns out, the stage play made it to Broadway and the rest is history.

The story and characters were altered in adaption from screen to stage, but the general story is this: In the summer of 1899, powerful newspaper publishers Joseph Pulitzer and William Randolph Hearst are in a circulation 'war' trying to make more profits and out sell the other. To do this, Pulitzer decides to hike up the price of his papers by ten cents per hundred papers. But the price hike isn't for the consumer, the person buying and reading the paper, but for the newsboys distributing them.

The newsies are poor and mostly street kids, either orphans or runaways trying to scrape a living, and when the price is raised they get angry. Every day the newsies have to pay for their papers and hope they sell them all to make a profit, but now that they have to pay more for their papers they risk losing more money if they can't sell all of their papers. So, against a backdrop of other labor strikes happening around the city, the newsies get the idea to go on strike.

The story is based on the real events of the New York City Newsboys' strike of 1899 led by Kid Blink (who appears as a minor character in the 1992 movie) and Dave Simmons (inspiration for the fictional Newsies character, David Jacobs).

Our fictional strike leaders are 17 year old Jack Kelly who dreams of escaping the city to go to Santa Fe, and David Jacobs who is a new newsie. David was previously in school before his father lost his job due to injury and David had to find work to help his family while his father recovers. Jack is the charismatic face of the strike and is well respected among his fellow newsboys. David got roped in with Jack on his first day as a newsie when Jack struck a partnership deal with David and David's little brother Les (younger newsies can sell more papers because adults pity them). From that initial partnership and David's brains, David becomes the mouth of the strike, telling Jack what to say.

I don't want to spoil anything, so I'll stop there, but basically Newsies is a 'David and Goliath' story with great characters, impactful themes, and catchy songs!

If I may, I'd recommend that you watch the original movie first and then the musical because the movie paints a better background (in my opinion) for the story and does a better job of portraying the aspect of child labor and the high stakes that the newsies faced. The musical (for obvious reasons) has some really impressive dancing but added dancing and added songs leaves less room for world building and less room for background/minor characters.

Verses

As a roleplayer, I tend to do verses a little bit differently than most. When I tag something in that verse, it just means that things are in a certain time or place. However, threads tagged in the same verse may not actually be in the same universe. For example with one Jack Kelly I have a storyline in which Jack stays with Darcy for a long period of time. This event does not happen in all verses that are tagged the same- only with that particular roleplayer. If you have questions, feel free to ask!

v: canon

This is the standard verse for Darcy which takes place in 1899. Darcy is living on his own at this point, but still works for The Tribune being the lead printer. He is best friends with Katherine and Bill and is slowly growing closer to Jack, Davey, Crutchie, and the other newsies.

v: modern

This is the other major verse I play. This takes place in current day in which Darcy is about 21-23 depending on the thread. He works in information technology and tends to work the late shift until early in the morning. He has generally good relationships with Katherine and the newsies as most of them attended the same college.

v: high school

This is basically the same as modern, but rather than being in college or just graduated, Darcy is a high school student.

v: come from away

This AU is based off of the musical Come From Away which takes place on 9/11 and the days afterwards. In this universe, Darcy is a flight attendant on a flight from London to New York that lands in Gander. His father works in the South Tower, so he is understandably terrified. Trigger warnings for death and terrorism apply to all posts as they are discussed frequently.

v: battle buddies

This is a WWII AU in which Darcy is serving in the army. Darcy is there for his battle buddy through thick and thin, despite how much he dislikes getting drafted. He is a printer, not a solider. This is a Modern AU verse. When Darcy is 26, his husband Tommy passed in a car accident, leaving him with their two young children- Ana at 5 and Mikey at 2. Now he’s working to raise his two babies as best as he could. Maybe even being open to a new love. But he’s just going to be the best father he can

v: star wars This is an AU based off the Star Wars series: most threads take place about the time of the Original Trilogy events (Luke/Han/Leia times). Darcy is the son of a minor general of a ‘neutral’ planet when one day the Empire attacks, causing him to flee with the party whose ship he just patched up. His little sister Rose- who he now understands was Force Sensitive- was caught up in the mix and killed. He feels all the guilt about this situation, but is learning to find a new family with the Company. Trigger warnings for this verse include: torture, mind control, death, child death, and a whole lot of angst. They arent present in every thread, but common enough to mention here

Bill and Darcy

Bill married into Darcy’s kingdom to get away from his father

Darcy’s kingdom was free and joyous

while Bill’s was cold and demanding

he couldn’t stand around and watch his father belittle his people, so he left

when he came to help rule Darcy’s kingdom, he realized why it was so happy

Darcy put so much energy into making his people happy that he didn’t do anything for himself

Bill taught Darcy how to help his people as well as himself

together they could make a kingdom both happy on the streets and in the castle

Elmer and Buttons

Elmer married into Buttons kingdom on account that he’s the youngest and Buttons is the eldest of their respective families

Buttons always knew he wanted to rule

no one could do it like he could

and Elmer loved that about him

they ruled their kingdom with ease

Buttons had been planing out what he wanted to change and make better since he was old enough to talk

that was the leader his people needed

Elmer aided Buttons in whatever he needed

he didn’t mind letting Buttons take the lead

he just always knew when Buttons was pushing himself too far and when to give him a break

Elmer kept Buttons healthy and not as panicked or stressed as he’d be alone

they were a good balance

Jack and Davey

Jack married into Davey’s kingdom since he was the eldest boy and was set to rule

Sarah had already married and moved away

so Davey was next in line

his parents had trust in him to pick a partner and he did not disappoint

Davey saw Jack and admired how he ruled

his kingdom was doing fine, but Jack wanted more

he always lived for change

Jack was a natural born leader and Davey was the brains of every operation

with their coordination, the kingdom thrived on communication, harmony, and trust

Jojo and Tommy Boy

Tommy Boy married into Jojo’s kingdom via arranged marriage in an attempt to merge the kingdoms together

Tommy Boy’s kingdom was going downhill and this was the best way to salvage what they had

Jojo’s parents agreed and soon their sons would be married

the two came from very different backgrounds and cultures

both royal, but different

Jojo is latino, and his kingdom reflected that

Tommy Boy is Macedonian and before he left, his kingdom reflected that

the two cultured merged together, combining a traditional latin style with an eastern european way of thinking

it blended quite nicely and the two made their new kingdom everything they wanted and more

Katherine and Sarah

Sarah married into Katherine’s kingdom because Katherine was the only child and proved herself worthy of ruling on her own

she just wanted a companion

Katherine was entirely set to do everything alone

but having Sarah was everything she didn’t know she needed

Sarah kept Katherine humble and sane

without her, she would’ve broken down by now

Kath didn’t know how her dad did it all those years

but Sarah made sure she was happy first

if she wasn’t happy, her people wouldn’t be either

Mike and Ike

not a couple

but they rule their kingdom together

technically since Ike was born 2 1/2 minutes before Mike, he’s the rightful ruler of the throne

but their parents let them both rule until one of them gets married

they took after their parents

they ruled strongly and wisely

Mike was the brawn

he controlled all aspects of war, allies, and physical work

while Ike was the brain

he controlled trading, communication, and mental work

they ruled harmoniously together

having a twin connection really helped in times like these and their kingdom thrived

Mush and Kid Blink

Kid Blink married into Mush’s kingdom because Kid Blink didn’t have a kingdom

he was a peasant boy

thrown out by his family on account of his disability

then Mush found him and knew he was the one

after their marriage, KB’s family tried to win him back but he turned them down on account of “them being too poor”

(a jab at something they couldn’t change, the same way the did with him as a child)

they ruled the kingdom the best they could

Mush was a loved king by all

from the time he was prince to his wedding to now, he was always adored

his charm and likability attached to his brain made him perfect to be king

Kid Blink came along and just added to that likability

now Mush wasn’t seen as flirtatious and childish, he was confident and a good husband

and a good husband makes a good king

Specs and Romeo

Specs married into Romeo’s kingdom

Specs was also a peasant, but a very well rounded one

he worked his way up the economic ladder and spent his free time reading books and learning cultures

Romeo found him in a bookshop and was impressed by his knowledge

they hit it off, got married, and now rule a kingdom together

Specs was and is incredibly smart

he helped Romeo think of new ways to tackle obstacles he wouldn’t have thought of

Romeo suprised Specs with his own library in the castle and Specs cried with tears of joy

he’d never seen that many books in his life

Romeo was always one for being romantic and it showed throughout the kingdom

his kingdom thrived on love and creativity

roses lined the streets and he did everything in his power to show love to his people

Spot and Race

Spot married into Race’s kingdom after almost being forced into a marriage with Katherine

when he saw Race he informed his he was the one and the king and queen arranged a meeting along with an engagement

they met, fell in love, and ruled from there

Race’s people were apprehensive of Spot at first

he was intimidating, closed off, and cold

very opposite to Race

who was kindhearted, open, and friendly

but it just took some time for him to open up

and when he did, the kingdom was never the same

Spot ruled incredibly different from any other person on the Higgins throne

of course Race had ultimate say in all matters and decisions, but Spot used his confidence to get the people on his side

Race admired how far Spot had come

and the people did too

they ruled together as compatible opposites
