Race is a young prince of a clan called Manhattan. He is gifted a bow and arrow by his father, Jack Kelly, when he’s only six years old and taught how to handle a weapon. He is playing with the thing when he shoots it and encounters a will-o-the-wisp. After chasing the thing around in the forest as his parents wildly search for him, the boy is attacked by a bear, only to be found moments later by his parents. Jack manages to save his son, but not his queen, who dies at the hands of the wild beast.

As Race grows up, he is sheltered more and more. Jack rarely lets him go horseback riding because of the fear he has from that day. But Race is still an adventurous boy who loves learning how to sword fight and he’s an expert archer.

When Race turns fifteen, he discovers that Jack has sent letters out to three of his surrounding allies, offering his son’s hand in marriage. Race tells Jack he means to refuse but Jack tells Race that if he doesn’t accept the proposal from the most suitable heir, Manhattan will soon go to war as the other clans don’t believe Jack to be a good leader and have already tried to overpower him.

Jack is a young king who took over the clan after his father’s passing, becoming a king and a father at the young age of fifteen and then losing his wife and having to raise a son and lead a clan alone. He is extremely protective of Race and his biggest fear is losing him which makes him a strict parent and more of a king than a father.

When the kings of the other clans bring their first borns before Jack, Jack assures Race that the way the win his hand in marriage is completely up to him and Racs forms a plan, stating that archery would be the competition for his suitors, Albert DaSilva, Spot Conlon, and Morris Delancey. The three shoot and Morris is in the lead, but when Jack goes to name him the winner, he finds that Race is going to be shooting for his own hand, winning without difficulty only to find that Jack is furious because Race has now shamed the other clans and has possibly started a war.

After a large fight with his father, Race runs away and finds a wisp that leads him to a witch’s cottage. The witch eventually agrees to help Race alter his fate and tells him he can do that by changing his father, giving Race some cakes to serve to Jack.

When Race brings the cake back, Jack tries to talk to him and Race pretends to give him a peace offering, the cakes, which seem like they make Jack very sick. Race, immediately regretting his decision, rushes Jack up to his room where Jack collapses and stops breathing for a moment before transforming into a large bear. Jack is still conscious of his life, but now is unable to communicate. So Race sneaks him out of the palace and tries to find the witch, finding the cottage abandoned and a message that tells Race if he wants to reverse the curse, he has to mend the bond torn by pride before the second sunrise or Jack will be gone forever.

Race is scared at this, realizing for the first time how scared he is of losing his father. So he takes Jack out into the forest where they bond for the first time in years. Race and Jack go fishing in a river and live life free of royal duties for the first time ever. But it isn’t long before the bear instincts in Jack take over completely, if only for a few minutes. Race tries to get Jack back, but Jack nearly attacks him, scaring himself when he gains back his human awareness.

The two eventually follow a wisp to some ancient ruins where they encounter the same bear that killed Race’s mother all those years ago. Race then realizes the bear has undergone the same curse as Jack, wanting to change his fate and be the strongest ruler of the clans and went to the witch, asking for a change of fate. After they manage to escape, Race swears to Jack that he will not let the same thing happen to him.

Race remembers how his fight with Jack had ended, with Race using his sword to cut a tapestry in half that his mother had made before she died.

The two sneak back into the castle to find the clans planning to murder Jack in his sleep and take over the kingdom, so Race agrees to marry one of the first borns of the other kingdoms before Jack prompts him to break tradition and encourages him to tell the clans that they should marry for love when they’re ready and that if anyone still wanted to murder his father, they would have to go through him first.

The clans agree to allow Jack another chance at being a leader and Race manages to sneak up and patch the tapestry. However, when Jack loses his humanity again, he wanders the castle and ends up in his room where he is found by a young guard of the castle, believing the bear to have eaten the king and to be the bear that had killed the queen years ago. The guard, David, attempts to kill the beast but when Jack regains his consciousness, he flees, causing an entire search party to hunt him down. David locks Race in the castle to protect him and then joins the hunt.

Eventually, Jack is found in the ancient ruins and trapped. Race manages to escape and chase after them, stopping the clans just before the can kill Jack, but before Race can explain, the real bear that killed the queen appears again and attacks Race. Jack then breaks free from the trap and immediately fights off the cursed beast to protect his son. When the bear is crushed, his spirit is freed from the curse and he transforms into a wisp.

Jack is hurt, still in the form of a bear as the second sun begins to rise. Race covers him with the tapestry and cries because he believes his father to be lost, but as he reconciles with him for the last time the witches spell is reversed and Jack is freed from the curse just before it’s too late. Jack is completely stunned and all he can do is hug his son as the clan leaders surround him and conceal him from the eyes of the people as Jack is beaten and completely naked.

Once they get Race and Jack back to the castle, Jack vows to be a better father and takes Race on a horse ride.

Oh God, not again, you thought, spotting him of all people across the dance floor. Sunoo had the same sour expression on his face, but made his way over to you anyways. "A dance, prince Y/N?" he asked, a mocking lilt in his voice.

You should probably explain how you got into this situation. Your parents decided to host a ball at the Kims' castle as both families had an announcement to make. What that announcement is, well, they decided to tell everyone in the staff but not their kids.

"Do you know what this is even for?" Well at least you aren't the only one who's confused.

"No, nor do I care to tell you when i find out."

Sunoo let out a sigh of exasperation, rolling his eyes at you. "Come on, prince, I don't want anything to do with you either, but work with me here."

Ouch. That one kind of hurt. You know you tended to put on a front, but you still wanted Sunoo to care for you like you cared for him. Though that seemed a tad irrational, you supposed, seeing as you never let it on that you didn't actually completely despise him.

"Now about that dance, prince. What do you say?"

Building up your front again, you looked away. He was about to leave when you stuck your hand out. "I suppose… one dance won't hurt, hm?" You couldn't hide your smirk when you saw his eyes light up.

One dance turned into four, then nine, then you lost track as you danced the night away with Sunoo. But no, you didn't actually like him, not that anyone knew anyways. You could both agree on your disdain for each other, but no one would have guessed that you were anything but in love as you danced. And somehow, you didn't hate that idea.

Before long, trumpets sounded, and everyone turned their attention to the front of the ballroom to listen to the royal families' announcement.

King L/N started, "Now, we've been meaning to become closer with our neighboring kingdom, and we also acknowledge that prince Y/N is coming of age and should marry soon."

Oh no, please don't father. You really hoped this wasn't going where you thought it was. Or at least, you kind of hoped.

"Prince Sunoo is also nearing the time when he needs to take over reign, and we thought that the perfect idea would be to join our kingdoms together. We would like to announce the marriage of the Kim and L/N families through prince Sunoo and prince Y/N," King Kim finished.

The whole room erupted in cheers, but your attention was only on Sunoo, who looked over at you with a nervous yet excited expression.

Making your way back over to the prince's side, you look at the floor, shuffling your heels a bit. "Well, it looks like this won't be our last dance."

"Yeah, I was hoping it wouldn't be." You looked up in shock. It seems that he hadn't meant to say that out loud, but you were glad he did.

Since it seemed he didn't want to say anything else, you took a chance, and said, "Well, I don't know about you, but I'm not that upset about the marriage." Your gaze stayed on his face, gauging his reaction.

A blush painted Sunoo's features as he looked back at you. "You know what, I'm not either." And with that he looked at your lips and leaned in.

Maybe, just maybe, you loved prince Sunoo, and with the way he was kissing you, maybe he loved you too.

i mentioned to @thatoneandlonelyemo2005 (howdy fellow history nerd) that tattoos were really popular in the 1890s, as they were mostly used with indigenous peoples but they bled up to the royalty, and of course the rest of the world wanted to be just like them, and the electric tattoo gun was invented in 1891 so it wouldve made the process a lot less painful and we were like omg the newsies wouldve had tattoos!!!

so then we started comin up with hcs for what tattoos they would each get.

i feel like this is kind of like a more 'what tattoos would they have in a modern au' thing but like they couldve had tats in the actual time period

so far we have

would get a matching one with each of his 'brothers' so a horse with crutchie to remind them of santa fe, a royal flush of cards for racer

i think he would want to do something for medda to show his appreciation for her so i came up with the comedy/tragedy masks yknow the like theater symbol

Valentine's Villains: Victory For Evil!

Thank you to everyone who participated in our Valentine Card Event this year, you guys had some fabulous suggestions! In the end, we received 289 valid submissions, though some of our villains got more love (and a little hate) than others. So, without further ado, our victors!

She's beauty, she's grace, she'll punch you in the face! Coming in first place, with 59 submissions, was the Daughter of the Demon herself, Talia al Ghul! Her most submitted word was "Queen", and love her or hate her, she certainly acts the part of royalty!

Our second place villain has a long history of being a fan favorite; it's actually why she was brought from cartoon character to comic book staple! Dr. Harleen Quinzell, better known as Harley Quinn, received 49 submissions, with her most submitted word being anarchist! A fitting descriptor for someone who both remains on Batman's most wanted list, has largely made the switch to antihero, and hates the federal government!

Our third and final winner of ultimate Valentine Villainy is none other than Argos, also known as Félix Fathom! Our boy received 46 submissions, and we're so glad to see him strutting his stuff for us this Valentine's Day!

Now, we've got more Villains to show some love too, but for the sake of sanity everyone else will be included on a new post. Thank you again to everyone who submitted! We really appreciate your enthusiasm for these characters, and we're very thankful that the only reason we had for dismissing any submissions was that some of them weren't single words.

Okay I'm gonna do this in three (3!) parts/posts bc there's a lot of outfits to talk about, and she's got three "eras" of costumes so it fits

Part 1 - Paper Mill Playhouse

1st Outfit: Carrying The Banner to I Never Planned On You

This outfit is excellent. Very posh and in-fashion, and appropriate for a morning walk. Her brooch and tie-pin are subtle accessories but quite fanciful. Her hat is also very appropriate, and the trim seems to match her tie which is a lovely touch. The lavender is a lovely shade, and throughout history purple has been both an expensive colour for fabric and associated with royalty, fitting for an upper-class young woman.

2nd Outfit: The Deli to Seize The Day

This outfit is near identical to the version used on Broadway, but with a few small differences: her waistcoat is double-breasted and has a long cut, sitting on her hips rather than her waist. Her shirt collar is rounded and turned down, and of course she wears a little tricorne hat, complete with ribbons in each corner. This is her working outfit, very professional looking like her walking attire.

3rd Outfit: King Of New York to Pulitzer's Office

This outfit seems to have been replaced by her more well-known orange outfit partway through the run. This version is much less pattern, with a white shirt with blue accessories: bow, buttons and belt. The skirt is less detailed too, and a more saturated shade of orange. This is Katherine Plumber when she isn't working. Not quite as formal or posh as her other outfits, and to the newsies her clothes likely wouldn't give away her true class

4th Outfit - Then I See You Again to The Finale

This is my favourite of Katherine's outfits in Paper Mill by far. We're back to purple, with a polka-dot shirt that continues Katherine's theme of silly patterns (a very good thing). Her skirt is hard to see in this image but it's a lovely dark purple, plain and unpatterned. The most noticeable feature of this outfit is her little bow-tie, possibly made of satin given the shiny texture. This still feels like a working outfit, but perhaps with a little more of Katherine's true fashion taste.

i think (hope?) i have a pretty good grasp of language, especially descriptive language :D

i think my characterization could be a lot stronger. obviously its a bit divided from the get-go with a majority of my works being aus, but i still wish they felt a bit more authentically like themselves. (ironically the character i tend to be the most nervous with this is parker. who has literally been dead for the entire story. /lh)

18. Thoughts on writing dialogue in another language in fic?

can be great! if proper research is done. i've never personally done it, and i don't think my knowledge of greek is strong enough/i would have to absolutely fight for my life to have it come up naturally between my characters i think lol

published fandom, newsies. in general it was probably warrior cats

20. Favorite fic you've written?

once again don't want to give the same answer i have in the past so, i actually really enjoyed i got a memory of blood. the fics i write in the span of a day naturally tend to be messier, a bit rushed, etc but i just think johnparker is an incredibly compelling dynamic especially in the cbau

Top three are:

Alternate Universe - Modern Setting

Alternate Universe - Royalty

Parent Donald Duck (Disney)

Which is moderately representative, although for some context the Modern AU is still only 42 of 240 fics. Some of that is that I am not always great at tagging effectively, and some is that I've done a lot of things a handful or less times. But shoutout to the Parent Donald Duck tag for still being #3 after all this time! I think my Newsies fics - many though they are - are too eclectic a group to push it out.

14. Are there any tropes you would only read if written by a trusted friend or writer?

I'm sure that there are, but I can't think of any examples off the top of my head. It's the kind of thing that's very circumstantial.

17. What highly specific AU do you want to read or write even though you might be the only person to appreciate it?

I wrote a Star Wars Rebels AU that featured both my favorite planet and jokes about my least favorite; I don't know if I can get more specific than that lol!

I don't know, I live in this funny place of being both impulsive enough to write anything no matter whether I think other people are going to go for it and prolific enough that there's an audience for even the weirdest AUs I've come up with.

49. What are you currently working on? Share a few lines if you’re up for it!

Most actively, I'm working on my two multichapter WIPs (Team Work Makes the Dream Work and picking up the pieces) but there isn't much interesting to share from the next chapters of either of those yet. I also have Human Les's TRP fic and the Reincarnation AU that I talked about a little while ago open!

10. Describe the tropes present in this wip

some sort of mix of royalty, pirate and historical au’s? (i’m counting those as tropes). found family, some enemies to lovers vibes (also it feels slowburn, but when you look at the actual chronological time it takes place over, it’s actually very speedy), probably also some hurt/comfort? definitely angst but also there’s definitely a good amount of fluff. idk my mind has kind of gone blank about more specific tropes, but there we go.

28. If you could pick three songs to capture the feel of your WIP, what would they be and why?

i’m not gonna have any good explanations for any of these, so the ‘why’ is simply “vibes”

Um both? The park and tidbits? Sorry I was second guessing myself that maybe you were annoyed at me I'm not always good at tone.

uhhh i know the most tidbits abt the 1890s and 1930s so ill start w the 90s and tell you the history of the park after

so. in the 1890s, there was obviously all the really strict rules and expectations, like children must be seen and not heard. kids under the age of 14 couldnt go in the dining room, or the formal parlor, and they could only go in the study at night and only if there was no guests. we have in the upstairs a set of furniture that the owner loved, theyre made out of longhorn horns, theyre really cool, but just after he bought them that style fell out of fashion, but he still liked them, so he put them upstairs where the guests weren't allowed so he could still have them but not be out of fashion! another cool thing in the 1860s-1900s, tattoos were wildly popular! it started with just the royalty having them, but it bled down to the lower classes over time, and the electric tattoo gun was invented in 1891 which helped the popularity rise, as it was much less painful. (so like, the newsies could've had tattoos! wouldnt that have been so cool?? :D)
