12th October 1773, the first asylum in the American colonies opens in Virginia for 'Persons of Insane and Disordered Minds'. Treatment at the asylum consistent with the standards of the day are brutal, with the use of simulated drowning in ice baths , bleedings, induced vomiting and later electrocution to ‘shock’ insanity out of the patients. By 1790 the asylum built high fenced exercise areas named ‘mad yards’, and attitudes towards mental illness were somewhat lessened by the involvement of Dr. Benjamin Rush, known as the "father of American psychiatry, for his work ‘Observations and Inquiries upon the Diseases of the Mind’, published in 1812. As well as this work Rush also developed ‘the tranquilizer chair’, which was used at the asylum. Rush believed that ‘madness’, was caused by an inflammation of the brain, and as such patients were strapped into the chair and fitted with a head clamp which was supposed to control the flow of blood towards the brain, reduce motor activity, and henceforth reduce ‘madness’. Rush also strongly persisted in his belief on the benefits of bloodletting, a practice also performed at the asylum. Excessive bloodletting as advocated by Rush, was already by the 1790’s becoming questioned as a medical treatment, however Rush’s insistence on the practice, especially during the Yellow Fever epidemic of 1793, is thought to have hastened the death of Benjamin Franklin, as well as George Washington. In 1799, Rush won a $5,000 libel judgment against British radical journalist and reformer William Cobbett, who accused Rush of bleeding patients to death. 8.6.17 Lunchtime drawing: Charles Lane was the northern boundary of Newgate Prison, then had a few horse stables, and now some tall glass buildings fronting the Hudson River--but a really nice place to draw with almost no traffic.

The Executioner’s Bell, St Sepulchre-without-Newgate. I promise this is the last bell photo for this church! More #gruesomehistory #londonhistory In 1605 a London merchant tailor John Dowe paid the parish £50 to buy a #handbell and forbit to be rung to mark the execution of a prisoner at the nearby gallows at Newgate. Between the 17th and 19th centuries, the clerk of the church was responsible for ringing the handbell outside the condemned man’s cell in the prison the night before his execution and announcing the news by repeating this: "All you that in the condemned hold do lie, Prepare you, for to-morrow you shall die; Watch all, and pray, the hour is drawing near That you before the Almighty must appear; Examine well yourselves, in time repent, That you may not to eternal flames be sent. And when St. Sepulchre's bell to-morrow tolls, The Lord above have mercy on your souls. Past twelve o'clock!" Gruesome! The file organizing project continues. I just discovered that my fourth-largest document was a Word doc filled with images of Newgate prison, from a project I did in college. I’ve deleted it, but saved these gems. Source unknown (tell me if you know!)
Two thoughts: The commentary under the last one seems rather unfair, and #teamhannahdagoe.

9th December 1783, date of the first public execution at Newgate Jail in London. Although a prison had stood on the site since 1188, all executions had taken place previously at Tyburn. The prison building by the date of its first execution was only a year old, having been rebuilt twice since the previous medieval building burnt down during the Great Fire of London in 1666. Rebuilt in 1672, and enlarged in 1770. The building again was destroyed during the Gordon Riots of 1780. From 1783 to the last execution of George Woolfe in 1902, 1,169 people were executed at the prison. The prison also held over its long years such figures as Sir Thomas Malory, Daniel Defoe, Captain William Kidd, Ben Jonson, William Penn, Thomas Spence and many more. #18thcenturyhistory #18thcentury #newgateprison #newgatejail #historyofcrime #londonhistory #darkhistory #historyoflondon #undergroundhistory #execution #executioner #gallows #gothichistory #greatfireoflondon1666 #greatfireoflondon #history #historic #danieldefoe #captainwilliamkidd #captainkidd #thomasspence #crimehistory https://www.instagram.com/p/CIs3MxpHLRB/?igshid=9zqwp3ljdzk0

More #bellnerd action but look at this gorgeous bell signage - almost like a metal plate used for printing. Now, I’d like to get a rubbing of that! And I love the way it wraps around the pillar too. So beautiful 🔔 There are 12 bells in the tower. In the past, the great bell at St Sepulchre tolled as condemned men passed from nearby Newgate prison to the gallows (by Smithfield) #gruesomehistory #londonpast #londonhistory #bellringing #bells #stsepulchrewithoutnewgate #smithfield #gallows #newgateprison
