9th December 1783, date of the first public execution at Newgate Jail in London. Although a prison had stood on the site since 1188, all executions had taken place previously at Tyburn. The prison building by the date of its first execution was only a year old, having been rebuilt twice since the previous medieval building burnt down during the Great Fire of London in 1666. Rebuilt in 1672, and enlarged in 1770. The building again was destroyed during the Gordon Riots of 1780. From 1783 to the last execution of George Woolfe in 1902, 1,169 people were executed at the prison.
