Frederick Sandys - Love’s Shadow (1867)
A Pre-Raphaelite portrayal of love's destructiveness. The painter depicts a scowling woman (modeled after his wife) in a distressed state, biting at the stems of flowers. She is shown to be holding a handful of flowers, among which are blue violets, symbols for fidelity in Victorian times, and possibly heliotrope, a symbol of eternal love.

“I am conscious about myself and everything, and then suddenly, or slowly, my conscious fades out. Switches off. And it’s not existing, and that’s a marvelous feeling. That from existing, I am not existing. And at that moment, nothing can happen to me.”
— Ingmar Bergman (via unbloom)
