Have you ever noticed how older people will always make comments like "Oh that's back in style now?"  This trend of everything is old is new again flows through life not just in style of clothing but also in faith. Example some things that were considered cults or cult like in the 60's or 70's is now considered mainstream. Things considered radical are normal. Technology is the same way.  Often times you may do updates or upgrades on your computer and regret it. I been there done that tons of times. 7 Realizations Since You’ve Been Gone

As many of my friends and my community, knows I’m the girl who lost her dad at the age of seven. I mention his name to this day, and everyone still remembers him. His sly humor, red face, caring nature, his love of Star Wars and the crowded streets that were filled with the community saluting him as we took my dad to his final resting place. This year will have been fourteen years since he passed away and there is still a gaping hole in my heart. We recently moved out of the home we once shared with him and the pain grew. Here are seven realizations i’ve had since he passed, you know, since I was seven years old. 

1.) Not everyone will understand.

This was the hardest one to adjust to when I was just a kid. My dad passed away shortly before the first day of school, when I was getting into second grade. A lot of the teachers were walking on eggshells around me to make sure they avoided the subject and the other kids didn't understand, just yet, what death was. So, I felt like I was always alone.

 2.) He won’t be here for the big stuff.

I know what you are going to say, “He is always watching over you,” well I hate hearing that. In the reality of the situation, whether it’s my wedding, graduation, or the birth of my first child, he is not physically here. As I grew up, I had difficulties with seeing everyone else with their dads and I didn’t have mine. As a child I think that is the hardest part about losing a parent. Having to see everyone else with theirs. I remember, in elementary school, some of my friends and I were sitting at a table talking about their dads and I started talking about mine. I was shortly interrupted with, “Peyton you dad is dead though, you can’t talk about him like he is alive.” At the age of ten I was pretty wise and responded, “Just because he isn’t here doesn’t mean I never had one. So, I can talk about him as if he were here, thank you.”  

3.) Pick yourself up.

I had to deal with a lot of bullying with my dad passing away. It isn’t what you would think someone could be so hurtful about but, as I was told then, “kids will be kids.” The bullying even continued into high school, but I learned how to get a backbone out of all of this. I think every time something was said, I became stronger. It was hard to realize it at first. It’s when you are being kicked while you were already down. In the end I learned how to defend myself and become a more headstrong person after that. 

4.) Family first.

After my dad passed away, it shifted our family in a huge way. I come from a very small family so losing one member, it’s hard to come back from that. Even though I was seven, I had to face mortality and because of his death, it made me so much more thankful for each of my family members. I try my best to see them when I can, because college and work keep me busy. I always do my best to remind them how much I love them, because you never know when that, ‘I love you’ might be your last.   

5.) It is okay to not be okay.

I spent a lot of my life telling myself that I needed to be strong for everyone else. Reality is, i had to learn that it is okay to cry it is okay to tell everyone how I was grieving. This was a hard realization I had to come to terms with. I’ve always worked on dealing with my emotions on my own. It is not healthy and after I started going to college, I met others that helped me with this, and I am overall happier now.

6.) Loving someone else is going to be hard.

Whether it is a partner or a whole new family, loving someone else has been hard for me. My main issue is, they didn’t get to know my father and I always dreamed of the two meeting and getting my father’s blessing. I even loved the idea of him chasing off a suitor by showing him one of his guns. Sadly, I don’t get these chances. The idea of my mom moving forward into other relationships and it took me so long to be okay with this. I still struggle with it, but its only because I miss my dad so much and what could have been. Letting in new people in my life had to be a reality I needed to accept. Thankfully, my family has been on this journey with me, and accepted this new life with me. One major thing I learned from this is that, even though he is gone, we can still love him, and no one forgets, but we are still able to let our hearts grow a little bit bigger for new family members.

7.) Keep moving forward, you don’t have to forget, but don’t dwell on the ‘what-ifs and coulda beens’.

Moving forward without my dad has been so difficult. As a child I wanted to keep everything the same in case he ever came back home. I wanted him so much that reality was not in mind. As I grew older, I kept focusing on how different my life would have been if he were still here. Where would I go to school, where would we have lived, what would he have gotten me for Christmas, and even how would he have tried to embarrass me. However, focusing on those thoughts kept me from progressing in my own life and kept me in the past. I have the memories I have and everything he left behind. For a while, I tried to live my life for him and everyone else. I tried doing everything they wanted for me and not what I wanted for myself. My dad would not have wanted that, he would have wanted me to live my life they way I wanted and to not let anyone stand in my way. Once again, still working really hard on this, I avoid a lot of negative decisions because of this, but also, I have avoided paths that I wanted to keep everyone happy. It is a work in progress, but I am getting there.
