Re the controversy about Season 5:
In the latest episode of Racing on the Edge, SailGP’s behind-the-scenes show, league chief executive Sir Russell Coutts said that should Canada, France and Spain all find the funding for next season, then New Zealand would be the team potentially on the chopping block if they find themselves still being partly league funded.
Speaking to the Herald ahead of this weekend’s season finale in San Francisco, Black Foils co-chief executive and driver Peter Burling said they had not had any conversations with the league about the possibility of them not being on the starting line in season five.
“There haven’t been any conversations that look negative for us next season,” Burling said.
“We’re really happy with the commercial programme we’ve got building. Obviously, we’re one of the current league-owned teams so we always get dragged back into these conversations, but we’ve got an amazing group of partners, we’ve got a really loyal group of fans which we’re really proud to represent.
“The growth of the team of the last year has been unbelievable so we’re really excited to push that forward and continue to build our programme.”

The group of 8 Youth Emirates Team New Zealand hopefuls undertook a busy four day schedule embarking on a steep learning curve encompassing the technical systems and software required to sail the AC40 as well as race training and simulation on the Emirates Team New Zealand simulator.
The 8 trialling sailors at the base are an impressive line-up of world and national champions across a number of different classes.
Annabelle Rennie-Younger        Current 470 & ILCA 6 National Champion
Serena Woodall                        RNZYZ Match race youth program / 2023 69F campaign
Jacob Pye                                 2023 Moth National Champion
Joshua Armit                             Gold medal at the 2018 Youth Worlds in Laser class
Leo Takahashi                           49er Olympics 2020 Tokyo Olympics- 11th
Oscar Gunn                               2022 49er National Champion
Sam Robert Thomas Street        2022 International WASZP Games Champion
Seb Menzies                             420 World Champion / 2022 Moth National Champion
Leading the trials and selection process is  Emirates Team New Zealand’s Josh Junior now in his 3rd America’s Cup campaign, having joined in 2016 as a young Olympic class sailor.
“I was lucky enough to join the team as a young sailor, similar to these guys, so I know what an amazing opportunity it is for these guys and girls, but also how daunting it can be. So we are throwing them in the deep end a bit, but that is all part of the challenge.” Said Junior.
Elise Beavis, also helping with the selection process explains what the week has been about.
“We've got our group of shortlisted sailors and they're running through a whole lot of different activities, such as sailing on the game, learning to use some of our in-house tools and their progression through the week has been incredible.”
The week wasn’t just about the individual, but assessing personalities and how they work collectively and the vitally important team environment
“They’ve got to be in sync with each other. They need to communicate well, I think those are big areas where they’re learning heaps.” said Elise Beavis.

F1 legend Sebastian Vettel invests in new German SailGP team
F1 legend Sebastian Vettel invests in new German SailGP team ahead of globe-trotting event's fourth season with quadruple world champion planning to take a hands-on role Vettel, 35, retired from Formula One racing at the end of the 2022 season He has invested in a new Germany SailGP boat skippered by Erik Heil By Adam Shergold for MailOnline Published: 12:58 EDT, 31 May 2023 | Updated: 12:58 EDT, 31 May 2023 Formula One legend Sebastian Vettel has invested in the new Germany SailGP team in his first sporting move following retirement from racing. The four-time world champion, 35, has partnered with double Olympic sailing bronze medallist Erik Heil and team owner Thomas Riedel in the sport often described as 'F1 on water.' Vettel and Riedel will both put money in to the German team, with Heil, who was on the podium at both the 2016 Rio and 2020 Tokyo Olympics, set to drive the 100km/h F50 hydrofoiling catamaran. The German boat takes the SailGP field to 10 ahead of the opening event of its fourth season in Chicago on June 16. Vettel said: 'I see a lot of potential as SailGP starts its fourth season and for the first time with a German team. Parallels between sailors and Formula One have long existed. Formula One legend Sebastian Vettel (left) and with skipper Erik Heil at the launch of the new SailGP team he has invested in SailGP CEO Sir Russell Coutts (left) hands over the wheel of the German boat to (second left to right) Erik Heil (Driver), Sebastian Vettel (Co-owner) and Thomas Riedel (Team owner) Germany will be the latest addition to the SailGP fleet ahead of the event's fourth season 'The boats are fascinating and the speeds on the water are incredibly high. The races are exciting and I am happy to be close to them with a motivated group of young sailors. 'In addition, the series not only uses wind power, but also strives to set new standards in sustainability in sports.' Vettel won four consecutive Formula One drivers' championships with Red Bull between 2010 and 2013, before pushing Lewis Hamilton close with Ferrari in 2017 and 2018. He spent the final two seasons of his F1 career with Aston Martin before announcing his retirement in July 2022. Vettel plans to take a hands-on role in the management of the German SailGP team, which was officially welcomed to the event by CEO Sir Russell Coutts at an event in Dusseldorf on Wednesday. The strongest challengers in the 2023-24 season will be three-time SailGP champions Australia skippered by Tom Slingsby, the New Zealand boat led by Pete Burling and Sir Ben Ainslie's British team. Vettel won four consecutive Formula One world titles with Red Bull between 2010 and 2013 Vettel, 35, waved goodbye to Formula One with Aston Martin at the end of the 2022 season  The sustainability aspect of SailGP would have been a big draw for Vettel with all the teams competing in an Impact League which ranks them on being the most environmentally conscious. Vettel regularly wore custom t-shirts and helmets to promote environmental causes during his F1 days. He caught up with Lewis Hamilton at last weekend's Monaco Grand Prix with the Mercedes driver posting an Instagram picture of them sharing a hug. There’s no real surprises here, and that’s just fine, we’re almost through the offseason and everything still looks on track:
The Emirates Dubai Sail Grand Prix presented by P&O Marinas on November 23/24 will host the debut racing performances of two new nations - Brazil and Italy, while France will sit out the first event.
The full 12-team line up will be in place from Auckland in January 2025, where France will compete in the 12th F50, which is currently under accelerated development in New Zealand and SailGP Technologies in Southampton UK.
The team’s potential new ownership group opted to wait for the league’s newest F50 and miss the first event, for which France will be awarded compensatory points.
This means that both Season 4 Champions Spain and New Zealand’s Black Foils will compete in the upcoming championship, with commercial discussions around both league-owned teams continuing.
Led by former SailGP star Jimmy Spithill, Italy is the second new national team to join SailGP this season. Its confirmation comes a year after Spithill announced his intention to form the team after leaving the United States team, which he drove for over two seasons. More details on the Italy SailGP Team will follow in the coming weeks, including the full athlete line-up.
The only big change is that…
SailGP has also confirmed a new scoring system for the upcoming season, which will only award points to teams who finish 1-10 in qualifying fleet races and overall event results. The 2025 Season also promises more prize money for SailGP athletes, with the league signaling intentions to significantly increase the overall purse up for grabs across the season, which totaled US $7million in Season 4 – the largest in the sport.
