Tonight he chose Cannabites as his location to celebrate, mainly because he volunteered to help Shade out at the bar for a couple of hours before enjoying himself. A few minutes to midnight and Finn had chugged enough beer and shots to properly enjoy himself, feeling right in that sweet spot of drunk that would ebb away faster than the average human. Benefits of being a demon with an accelerated metabolism, he supposed.

Now all he needed was someone to kiss at midnight and Finn scoured the crowd for a potential candidate. His eyes lit up when he found Mateo at the bar and he grinned, sidling up to the thunderbird with his newest beer in hand. "Fancy seein' you here without the greeting of a physical collision," he said teasingly. "Are ye havin' a good night, Mateo?"

"We met Käärijä in Madrid at a pre-party, he was on a similar energy level as us - he didn't take himself too seriously and we didn't either. He was quite open-minded and had a positive approach to the whole situation, so we really connected on that level during the ESC when really huge things were happening to everyone, in the form of media pressure and everyday new situations, so it suited us all to have each other to share those feelings.

Adele Springsteen, 98, of Little Silver passed away peacefully on Wednesday, January 31, 2024 at her home. Adele was born Adela Rosa Zerilli on May 4, 1925 in Brooklyn, New York, the youngest of three sisters. She resided in Freehold, New Jersey and Belmont, California before moving to Little Silver, New Jersey.

Adele graduated from Freehold Regional High School, where she was given the title of “best dancer in the class.” After graduating, she was employed as a legal secretary for 25 years at Lawyers Title in Freehold, New Jersey and 25 years at Bohannon Development in San Mateo, California.

On February 22,1948, Adele married Douglas Springsteen at the St. Rose of Lima Church in Freehold. They celebrated their wedding reception at the Blue Moon Inn in Farmingdale and went on to have three children, Bruce, Virginia and Pam. They celebrated over 50 years of marriage.

Adele and Douglas’ adventurous spirit brought them to California, where they enjoyed the West Coast for 25 years. After Adele’s retirement, she and Douglas logged thousands of miles on their cross country adventures.

After Douglas’ passing in 1998, Adele returned to her home, New Jersey, to join her large extended family and enjoyed some of the happiest years of her life traveling and surrounded by her sisters, her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren.

Her son, Bruce, said of his mother in his memoir: “My mom was truthfulness, consistency, good humor, professionalism, grace, kindness, optimism, civility, fairness, pride in yourself, responsibility, love, faith in your family, commitment, joy in your work and a never-say-die thirst for living and life… and most importantly for dancing.”

Her eternally ageless and bright spirit lit up the room. All those who were blessed to know her will never forget the light she brought into their lives.

In Adele’s words, “As long as we’re happy, healthy and we love each other, that’s the whole thing.”

Adele leaves behind an adoring family and many friends and admirers. Her legacy is love.

review: not one of my favorites from rainbow. for half of the story i was convinced i’d been duped into another tired love triangle. i was pleasantly surprised to find though, that the overarching themes of romance weren’t pointing to the common message of falling in love with the right person, but rather falling back into love even when you thought you did wrong or messed up. is it worth re-reading? i’d say no. nonetheless, it will tug at your heartstrings and make you yearn for the domestic turmoil to find resolve.

review: for all my cottagecore bitches, this is the coziest read of the year! it’s the perfect balance of fantasy, comedy, and pure fluff. durst does an exquisite job of world building and constructing chemistry between characters. she mentioned in her acknowledgments something along the lines of writing a book that’s like drinking hot chocolate, and she succeeded! :)

review: i’ve discovered i’m not a smut heavy reader, and after introducing the first sexually explicit chapter, the author seemed to include even more smut-heavy scenes after every other major plot point, as though to be a palate cleanser of sorts? **for those wondering, this does include monster romance** if not for the more domestic scenes and humorous dialogue, i would probably rate it lower, but the central plot of the book is very well introduced and the character chemistry is off the charts! (it’s also worth noting that the enemies to lovers hinted in the synopsis doesn’t last more than a few chapters…)

review: if i were still a part of either author’s target audience i may have been more influenced by this piece of writing. the last book I read of john green’s was “turtles all the way down” when i was still in high school, which i find remarkably written. this in comparison was, eh. maybe if i had a little more teenage angst running through me (perhaps a lack of the aforementioned kickass meds) this would speak to me on a deeper level. it’s easy to tell this book is very much “from its time” when you’re reading it. i do appreciate the shoutout to neutral milk hotel, though, that made me fangirl just a smidge. for younger readers looking for a coming of age, easy-read with LGBTQ+ and mental health representation, this is right up your alley! the description of the musical playing out did get a few laughs from me, and the overall theme i took from this is that friendship always wins.

Superlinguo 2023 in review

I spent 2023 on leave to hang out with a new tiny human. I still found time for some linguistics, including regular Lingthusiasm episodes and even some intermittent blogging. I also got to reuse all my linguist pregnancy announcement jokes.

Lingthusiasm turned 7 this year! We celebrated with a dozen main episodes as well as our monthly bonus episodes for patrons. We had some help to get through the year while I was on leave with interviews with linguists from around the world, including Lingthusiasm team members Martha Tsutsi-Billins and Sara Dopierela.

The year ahead

I'll be back to work full time. I've found the low-key level of blogging I managed this year to be sustainable, so expect it to be business-as-usual here. Lingthusiasm will also continue with monthly main and bonus episodes, thanks to the patrons who support the show and ensure we have a team that can keep everything rolling while begin to take on more administrative responsibilities in my job.

I'm looking forward to sharing some things that are in the final stages of peer-review and copy editing, and I'm excited to be spinning up some new projects.

PERSONALITY

Jake is a lot of things, a blend of independence, passion, and intensity. He likes to think he has a unique, forward-thinking perspective, huge on his freedom (to a fault), and rebellious is in nature. He has an emotional intensity and impulsive energy, driving him to pursue his desires above all else. He is quite competitive, even if that's in a much more internal understanding of what it means to be competitive. Jake knows how to push the charm switch while simultaneously keeping even the closest people in his life at an arms length. He does crave deeper connection but finds that particularly hard to break into. Coupled with his need for personal freedom, that can be extra tricky. BACKGROUND / BIO

Jake was born in Merrock on January 31st, 1992. The second child to Robin and Henry Fields. Apropos there happened to be a blizzard that day, forcing an at home water birth. The joke now being fetus Jake wouldn't come kicking in this world the 'normal' way. Mother Nature playing her part right out the gate.

Growing up (until the twins of course) Jake more or less walked to the beat of his own drum — a social kid with a bit of an arrogance that hasn't gone away — never found it hard making friends, one minute wanting the center of attention the next content with sitting in a corner nose deep in a comic book. More than content when more attention was divided between all the siblings. Actually sort of a picturesque upbringing, Robin and Henry supportive in whichever avenue their kids chose. Jake played sports, soccer, football, baseball — sticking only with football (because most his friends ended up on the team) in high school.

There though, Junior year Jake found theater. And the music room where he could hone in on what really excited him. Having picked up the piano at a younger age, he found interest in learning other instruments. (Favorite being the drums) He learned guitar, bass, how to write music. Jake joined a band in high school — Henry and Robin allowing them practice out their garage in the burbs. They played all over town, for dances, festivals you name it.

Highschool is where he met and fell head over heels— to a bit of a toxic degree- lots of romantic teens first and ups and downs with Ximena Serreno. Fellow party girl, someone who indulged fully along side him in wreaking havoc around Merrock. When graduation hit in 2010— Jake was out. Truly like a movie, he was going to make it big. (Full support from the fam) Or something like it in the big city. He broke it off with Mena, grabbed his guitar and bandmates and were Manhattan bound.

Jake dove head first into the music scene, joining a new band, the og's leaving or finding new passions, he landed with a steady three eventually. Even getting a little New York indie famous. Even embarking on small tours over the years. With age comes different responsibilities and the core 3 auditioning new members over the years - making ends meet all kinds of ways. On one of his many trips back home to Merrock, as usual, had a meet up with his ex and things ensue and by April 2019 Jake had a son, Mateo.

Jake wasn't there for his birth and by the fifth year of Mateo's life he'd still never met his son. Of course a lot of discourse around this within all parties involved. And up until present day, when it was more and more clear the dreams he'd held so close and deep were no longer in the cards, life pointed him back to Merrock. For now, back in his old bedroom — Jake is finally learning to accept failure and accept responsibility.

BENIDORM FEST 2024 - PARTICIPANTS

Yesterday (november 11) all 16 participants of Benidorm Fest 2024 were revealed - the songs will be revealed on december 14th. I wanted to make this post talking about all the possible representants of Spain in ESC 2024, as a little intro to them and how their songs might sound like. As always, everything will be below the cut :)

ALMÁCOR

Arturo Almarcha Corella, better known as Almácor (Villena, 26) is an urban artist that started his career in 2019. He has released an EP since then, and has collabed with artists like Henry Mendez or Chimbabala. This year he was nominated in the Best New Urban Artist in the Los 40 Music Awards. His most popular song is DE TO', and his last released song is Pop Tech.

ANGY FERNÁNDEZ

Angy Fernández (Palma, 33) is a LEGEND and our very own emo princess, she's an icon. Her leap to fame was being the runner up in the first edition of Spanish X Factor, in 2007, but she became a phenomenon when she starred in iconic teen drama Física o Química (2008-2011) as Paula Blasco. She also released various albums and songs, like the hit and iconic emo bop Sola en el silencio. After the show she has appeared in various TV programs like Tu Cara Me Suena, and has continued making music as well as acting in theatre, cinema and TV shows. Her last released song is Dualidad.

DELLACRUZ

Jorge de la Cruz Correa, better known as Dellacruz (Santa Cruz de Tenerife) is a Canarian urban pop singer that started his own singing career in 2019 after ample experience as a songwriter; he has written songs for artists such as Sergio Dalma, Xuso Jones, or Dvicio, among many others. His most known song is La Trama, whereas his last released song is Tocamos Cielo.

JORGE GONZÁLEZ

Jorge González González (Madrid, 35) first rose to fame after competing in OT 2006, and he since has been in two Spanish preselections for ESC 2009 and 2014. He has also participated in The Voice and in Tu Cara Me Suena, where he won in the 2020 edition. His most famous song is Por Besarte, and his last released song is Agüita.

LÉRICA

Lérica is a duo composed of Tony Mateo (San Fernando, 29) and Juan Carlos Arauzo formed in 2015 that sings pop infused flamenco and urban music, and have collabed with very big artists like Belinda, Gente de Zona, Abraham Mateo (brother of Tony Mateo), Cali y el Dandee or Juan Magán. They have 14 platinum albums and 9 golden ones, and are right now the most listened to Spanish duo in terms of streams. Their most famous song is Flamenkito, and their latest released song is Un Rato pa Siempre.

MANTRA

Mantra is a pop band made out of Carlos Marco (Alacant, 31), Paula Pérez and Charly Weinberg (Madrid, 25), born in 2020 when the three friends decided to start a project together. All three have been in the music industry for a long time; Carlos Marcos is the most-known of them, as he was part of the boyband Auryn (alongside Spain's representant in ESC 2021, Blas Cantó), who participated in the ESC 2011 preselection. They have an up-beat and positive attitude in their songs, and have released their first album in 2023. Their most popular song is No Te Esperaba, and their latest single is ¿Te Acuerdas o No?.

MARÍA PELÁE

María Peláe (Málaga, 33) is an icon and a flamenco singer known for her witty and ironic lyrics, with a modern spin on traditional sounds. She started her career in 2016 after studying Anthropology and Social Work in university, and so her songs usually have a social message. In fact, in 2023 she was awarded the Rainbow Award by the Ministry of Equality for her work in the LGBTQ+ scene. A song I really recommend of hers regarding this is La Niña, a very fun song about wlws (also the music video is soooo). She has released two albums - the second of which won an Odeón to Best Flamenco Album, and has participated in various TV shows like Tu Cara Me Suena. Her most popular song is Por si te vas, and her latest single is Letra Menúa.

MARLENA

MARLENA is an indie pop duo composed by Ana Legazpi (voice) and Carolina Moyano (guitar) that formed a band in 2017 when they decided to participate in X Factor Italy. They became friends with Damiano and Victoria from Maneskin, and decided to name themselves after one of their songs, Torna a Casa, where the name Marlena appears. They even sing some of Maneskin's song in their concerts. In 2021 they were nominated for Best New Artist or Group in the Los 40 Music Awards, and have collabed with Nil Moliner, La Pegatina or Despistados. I listen to their song bailamorena at least once a week (i wish i was joking), tho their most popular song is Me Sabe Mal. Their latest released song is Red Flags.

MISS CAFFEINA

Miss Caffeina, formed by Alberto Jiménez (voice), Sergio Sastre (guitar and keyboard) and Antonio Poza (bass) is definitely the biggest name this edition. They are a staple in the indie rock scene since their inception in 2006, and are especially staples in music festivals all over the country and abroad. They have realeased three albums and an EP, and their most known song is the modern classic Mira Cómo Vuelo, with over 13 m views on youtube. Their last released single is Para toda la vida.

NEBULOSSA

Nebulossa is an electropop band formed by María Bas (voice) and Mark Dasousa (producer, synths). They debuted in 2021, and define their formula as MPYMS (A lot of Pop and a lot of Synths), basing their music on the sounds an rhythms of the 80s. Their most popular song is GLAM, and their latest song is 1N84.

NOAN

Noan (Zarautz, 25) is a pop-rock indie artist that debuted in 2020. He has collabed with zzoilo or El Sueño de Morfeo, and I personally really enjoy his collab with Paula Koops, Odio que te Quiero. His most popular song is ME MATA(S), and his latest song is Zero (which is a cover btw).

QUIQUE NIZA

Quique Niza (Madrid, 20) is a musical theatre actor who has been performing all of his life; some of his notable roles are Kurt von Trapp in The Sound of Music, and Danny Zuko in Grease (I saw him live here, and he's incredible!). He has also appeared in some TV shows, like UPA Next and Días Mejores. He has only released one song so far, Ardo.

ROGER PADRÓS

Roger Padrós (Polinyà, 26) is a Catalan singer and piano player that first rose to fame as a participant in The Voice. He has since released an EP and an album, with songs both in Spanish and Catalan (he has confirmed his song for Benidorm Fest will be in Catalan). He is also the resident musician of Casa Batlló, in Barcelona. His most popular song is Digue'm, and his latest song is El Buit.

SOFIA COLL

Sofia Coll i Benito (Barcelona, 24) is a singer, actress, and dancer who rose to fame as a participant of The Voice Kids when she was 14, although she didn't release music until 2019, with songs that mixed Spanish and English. She was one of the protagonist of the TV show Bany Compartit (I watched the first episode while writing this, it's really fun and I really recommend it! Episodes are around 10 minutes long, and you can find all of them in RTVE Play and Youtube; they're in catalan, but there's Spanish subs available), and she was one of the dancers in Rosalía's mv for Fucking Money Man. Yoly Saa (Pontevedra) is a Galician singer-songwriter singing in Spanish that has been making music since 2020, although she has also composed for other artists such as Luz Casal o Malú. She has released an EP and a full album, and participated in Dúos Increíbles in 2022. Her most popular song is Todo contigo, and her latest song is Mal de altura.

Valparaíso Activities:

January 6th: Valparaíso City Hall is hosting a New Year, New Me concert at Quintil Valparaíso Park from 6 PM - 2 AM, no admission fee. Expect to see food stalls, face paintings, mini shops and wares, lawn games, and merchandise from your favorite artists. (If you’d like your muse to be a vendor or a performer, please message the main!)

January 7th: La Universidad de Bellas Artes is holding an open house from 8 AM - 3 PM. Parents, prospective / incoming students, and alums are encouraged to attend. You can tour the university, meet the professors, see what courses and events are going to be hosted for the 2024 year, and see the student organizations.

January 13th: La Cocina de los Años 30 is hosting a Reggaeton Night from 8 PM - 12 AM. There will be live music, a curated menu just for the night, and a raffle, where one lucky person may win a cooking class for themselves and up to 10 friends. For those of you that know the password, the event continues underground in the secret speakeasy, where you can enjoy a separate, curated food and drink menu, and an exclusive performance by Bad Bunny.

January 20th-21st: Valparaíso City Hall is hosting a football (soccer) tournament at Quintil Valparaíso Park from 8 AM - 8 PM to raise money for charity. The top three winning teams will receive gift baskets and have their photos taken for an exclusive spread in La Revista de Valparaíso for the February edition; the first place team will also have their team photo featured in the 2025 calendar. Santa Moneda Activities:

January 1st: SM Management will be coordinating travel and stay in Arica, Chile, for residents who want to attend El Carnaval Andino con la Fuerza del Sol, Chile’s largest festival and one of the biggest in South America. It is a three-day festival (January 26-28) held in Arica in northern Chile. 10,000 dancers and musicians turn the city into their stage; you can expect to see colorful parades, shows, dances, and cuisines in food stalls from all over. You don’t want to miss this event! Speak to the front desk to sign up.

January 1st-31st: To help you reach those New Year New Me fitness goals, the Santa Moneda Indoor Gym will be adding 4 classes that residents can attend.

Hot Yoga Class - Saturdays, and Sundays at 9 AM and 6 PM. Barre Class - Mondays and Thursdays at 11 AM and 6 PM. Bootcamp - Sundays and Wednesdays at 8 AM and 6 PM. Kickboxing - Tuesdays and Fridays at 8 AM and 6 PM.

January 4th: La Galería Navarro reopens at 8 PM with an entirely new exhibit for the new year curated by our very own Sariyah Carter. There will be several local artists presenting their works; champagne and hor’dourves will be provided during the event.  Cocktail attire is required. Many of the art pieces are for sale; if you’re interested in purchasing, please talk to the curator for more information on pricing and pieces.

Mateo Valenzuela is a painter specializing in art nouveau; they will be discussing their most recent collection, titled, El diablo en los detalles. Emilia Fuentes is a versatile sculpturist who dabbles in various styles and materials; they will be discussing their sculpting methods, techniques, and inspirations. Ángel Altamirano is a painter specializing in hyperrealism; she will be discussing her most recent collection, titled, Transparente.

January 18th: Santa Moneda is hosting a Chilean Movie Marathon in the Movie Theatre on the 13th floor.  Feel free to bring your own snacks and pillows, but management will provide buttered popcorn (plain or dressed up with cotija, chili, and lime), soda, and SM-engraved blankets.

5 PM - El Chacotero Sentimental (1999) : El Chacotero Sentimental (The Sentimental Teaser) is a titillating film inspired by the stories of romance, love, and sexual encounters from the real-life radio program of Chilean DJ el Rumpy. A multitude of Chileans tuned in to el Rumpy’s legendary program, making it an ideal subject for this entertaining film about passion and storytelling. 7 PM - Tarde Para Morir Joven (2018) : Tarde Para Morir Joven (Too Late to Die Young) is a coming-of-age movie that follows a young girl that must navigate the difficulties of adolescence. It uses one’s family’s experiences as the foundation for a dreamily absorbing drama with a poignant, lingering warmth. 9:30 PM - El Cielo, la Tierra y la Lluvia (2008) : El Cielo, la Tierra y la Lluvia (The Sky, the Earth, and the Rain) is a film about lonely lives in the Chilean south. This movie is a beautiful rendition of loneliness and the vast Chilean south; The landscape submerges us in a hazy, thoughtful state, and inspires us to slow down and admire the charm and elegance of routine. 12 AM - La Casa Lobo (2018) : La Casa Lobo (The Wolf House) is an adult stop motion animated art film inspired by the actual case of Colonia Dignidad, an infamous and isolated colony established post-WWII. The movie uses elements of avant-garde cinema, dark fantasy, adult animation, psychological drama, surrealism, and supernatural horror.

January 23rd: We will be running an upgrade on the internet connection and speed, as well as doing virus scans on all SM equipment. To ensure this all runs smoothly, internet access will be out between the hours of 10 AM - 2 PM.  We apologize for the inconvenience it may pose, but were unable to schedule it at another time.  As an apology, residents may bring in one (1) laptop each for IT help with our onsite technicians.

Artist statement:

In my mixed media work, I use medical imaging such as X-rays and MRIs, as a point of departure, sometimes serving as a metaphor for looking under the surface. I combine these intricate, mysterious images with other materials, attempting to reveal or tell a story.

On August 23, 2020, Jacob Blake, a 29-year-old African-American man, was shot and seriously injured by police in Kenosha, Wisconsin, as his children sat in his car. In the midst of a pandemic we watched videos of this shooting and those of other young black men. I was afraid that Jacob Blake’s story would be lost in the noise of the news. "Seven Shots at Close Range" is my attempt to memorialize this tragedy and failure.

Judge Rules in Favor of Store Employee Fired for Trying to Stop Thief

A longtime Safeway employee from San Mateo, California, has won a court victory after she was terminated for trying to stop a suspected shoplifter, FOX-KTVU out of Oakland has reported.

Antoinette Baez was fired Feb. 2, 2023 after she attempted to stop an alleged shoplifter. Safeway policy prohibits employees from chasing, touching, or pursuing a suspected thief, according to attorney Neil Eisenberg who represented Baez.

Baez had noticed a woman attempting to leave the store without paying and subsequently contacted her supervisor, David Arevelos, who then confronted the woman.

In a video released by Baez's attorney, she recounted the events that unfolded.

"I said, 'Your transaction is still on the screen. You haven't paid for anything,'" Baez recalled telling the woman, who denied the allegation and tried to leave with the merchandise.

In the video, Baez is shown trying to grab the grocery bags the woman was holding. Baez says she was aware of the store policy regarding theft and tried to remain calm during the incident.

"That kept playing in my head, like don't go outside, don't go after her, and don't touch her," Baez explained.

It was then that the altercation became physical, as Arevelos attempted to prevent Baez from being punched by the alleged shoplifted.

The woman left the store without any of the groceries and Baez then called the store's director.

"He was very understanding, compassionate; he's like: 'I'm sorry that happened; I'm glad everyone's OK,'" Baez recalled, adding, "No disciplinary actions were taken against me."

Less than a month later, both Arevelos and Baez were eventually dismissed.

Following a lengthy legal back and forth, Baez and her attorney won the claim they filed with the state Employee Development Department. The new ruling awarded Baez unemployment back dated to her point of termination, almost a full year.

However, Eisenberg confirmed his client has not received an apology from Safeway, nor an offer to have her employment reinstated.

"This is probably the dumbest, cruelest incident I've seen in my entire practice," he said, adding that he feels Safeway has created an open-door policy for theft.

"You are better off stealing from Safeway than paying for your goods or your groceries, because when you pay for your goods or your groceries, you are absorbing the cost of shoplifting," the attorney said.

"If you're shoplifting, you get to go free, no consequences."

Little People, Big World: What Happened To Jacob Roloff?

From the moment Little People, Big World premiered on TLC in 2006, the Roloffs were fan favorites, even when accusations arose that the "reality" show was anything but. Jacob Roloff, the youngest member of the Roloff family household, was born on January 17, 1997. Jacob left Little People, Big World when he reportedly opted out of his contract in 2016.

Admittedly, the show didn't focus heavily on Jacob or his part in the Roloff family. Rather, the focus was more on his older brothers, twins Zach and Jeremy, who appeared close on the show originally but later had a falling out.

Most people don't know the bizarre backstory of Chris Cardamone and his time on Little People, Big World. Even when Jacob just made the announcement in 2020, super fans of the show suspected that Cardamone had a weird and twisted past with both the family and the show.

Chris joined Little People, Big World as the executive field producer in 2007, and just one year later, on October 20, 2008, he was arrested in Santa Clara, California, for crimes against children.
