I'm starting course level 6 today and after not attending all level 5 classes due to top surgery recovery and writing my thesis (but enough to advance) I'm curious how that'll go. general we have a very chill pace though, so I feel rather confident

I'm also impatiently waiting for my graduation certificate to arrive.. it doesn't feel real without it!

Writing About The Codeblr Community

I am making an article about us! Well, about the coding community on here (#codeblr)!

I got advice from a frequent writer on Medium that I should write about something I am passionate about and to find out what exactly, she said "What topic would you talk about for hours in front of an audience?" and honestly it would be Tumblr, but more especially about the Codeblr community!

I've made some notes on what I want to talk about. It's still not complete as I made the notes around midnight last night so I was a bit tired whilst I was typing but I will take time to talk to people, plan the various topics I want to cover properly and get enough information!

🤔 What's my aim with writing the article?

To shed light to the community and the hard work everyone has put into their codeblr/studyblr blogs. From people sharing resources, to those who share their programming progresses. Someone asked me time ago about sharing their codeblr blogs on their resume/CV and on other social media platforms - if people can share their YouTube, Twitter, Instagram account on coding, why not their Codeblr blog? Your Tumblr blog is just as worthy as someone sharing on Twitter. Plus it's nicer and more welcoming here~!

Anyhoo, if you see your name in the list, I will ask permission to mention you! I won't force it or anything.

omg where do i even begin uhhhhh

in my freshman year i was doing a group paper for a linguistics course on if tonal language speakers have perfect pitch.

the one man in the group says he will handle the outline - proceeds to write the OUTLINE in PARAGRAPH FORM complete with a weird code system that he included a key for at the top of the page????? (# = ‘subject to change’, @ = looking for sources to confirm)????? and he just submits it after we told him we don’t understand it??

also his writing is so UNNECESSARILY VERBOSE its like this man is a walking thesaurus??? and his writing style was so comically goofy??? dude would say “but nay! perchance alternative possibilities exist within that constellation of knowledge gathered by scholars gone by” instead of “however, we offer alternative explanations from existing literature”. sir??? i am NOT about to lose points on a paper for your writing style

30 mins before the deadline i look at the google doc to check it one more time for formatting before submitting. and i see him WRITING OUR PAPER TO ADHERE TO A BRAND NEW THESIS WE NEVER AGREED ON???? and not only was it only his idea, but his idea was literally “music IS language with its own syntax and grammar!”

when i pointed out how this argument may rightfully look strange to a linguistics professor, he said that “if the languages we talk about in our paper like chinese and japanese are languages, how am i wrong?”

i proceed to explain to him what languages are (which is what this ENTIRE course has been about) and why his argument doesn’t hold, using chinese and japanese as examples

he, a monolingual English-speaker who was born and raised in canada, proceeds to tell me i am wrong about chinese and japanese

i was born in japan and raised in china and he knows this

i give up and don’t bother arguing with him as he proceeds to continue ruining our paper and turning it in

he turns it in to the prof and in the email rides a high horse about how he knew this isnt what we planned for our paper and it was his idea, but he has a strong sense of conviction in his ideas (which are wrong)

as a cherry on top he cites jordan peterson as one of his personal inspirations at the end of his email

📚 favorite course you’ve taken?

ohhhh my course on asian diasporic health!!! it was such a small class and we were all asian immigrants or members of the diaspora and it felt like such a lovely little sharing circle to discuss readings and our own experiences. the prof is so cool too he streams on twitch

Improving Your Work Ethic

I had a meeting with my manager on Friday on three key skills I need to look out for when working. She said being in school/apprenticeship and working in a company are two different situations. There are skills you only learn by working in a team with real-life projects. She mentioned; Work Ethic, Communication and Time Management.

I decided I would talk about each one and give tips that she mentioned and others I found out myself and over searching online. This post will be about improving your work ethic. The advice my manager gave is from a Senior Software Developer's point of view but the advice can be carried over to other industries you work in!

What is Work Ethic?

Work ethic refers to the values and principles that guide how a person approaches their work or responsibilities. It involves having a positive attitude, being diligent, and demonstrating a strong commitment to doing your best.

Imagine that school project you had to complete. Having a good work ethic means that you approach the project with enthusiasm and dedication. It means taking responsibility for completing your work on time and putting in the necessary effort to produce high-quality results!

Tips To Improving Your Work Ethic

This is a long list but worth while to think upon! Here are all of the tips that my manager gave me and some extra notes I made afterwards:

Understand Expectations

Do you know what is expected of your role and responsibilities at work? If you don’t, you need to. Not just what the job description said when you applied but directly from your team manager or your boss!

Be Punctual

Arrive on time for meetings, scrums, and work-related commitments. Being punctual demonstrates respect for others' time and shows your dedication to the team.

Meet Deadlines

If you know me, you’ll know I struggle with this a lot. Consistently meet the deadlines for your tasks and projects. Plan and prioritize your work to ensure timely delivery. If you’re struggling with the project/work somewhere, ask for help.

Take Initiative

Show initiative by seeking opportunities to contribute beyond your assigned tasks. Take ownership of challenges, propose solutions, and actively participate in team discussions. I like this because I always come up with new add ons a project!

Be Accountable

Take responsibility for your actions and outcomes. Admit and learn from mistakes, and avoid making excuses. It may be hard but just say you messed up and it won’t happen again.

Practice Self-Discipline

Develop self-discipline to stay focused and motivated in your work. Minimize distractions and maintain a strong work ethic even when faced with challenging tasks. This is why if you struggle with this, do a Studyblr study challenge to stay on track and be motivated!

Be Proactive In Learning

Continuously expand your knowledge and skills by staying updated with the latest industry trends and technologies. Seek out learning opportunities and take advantage of professional development resources. Especially in my field of Tech, something new is happening all the time! My workplace gave us Pluralsight for free so we can be studying on the site as we work!

Communicate Effectively

Work on your communication skills to convey information clearly and professionally. Keep your team members, stakeholders or anyone necessary informed about your progress, challenges, and achievements!

Get Feedback

Actively seek feedback from your teammates, supervisors, and mentors. Constructive criticism can be good, see it as an opportunity for growth and improvement!

Collaborate Effectively

Practise positive and productive collaboration with your team members. Contribute to team discussions, listen actively, and support others when needed.

Be Adaptable

Changes at work, project or whatever can be scary, and sometimes quite annoying, however, embrace change! Be open to new ideas, technologies, and processes. Learn to adapt quickly to shifting priorities and evolving project requirements!

Take Care Of Your Well-Being

Prioritize your physical and mental well-being. I had a time when I was mentally stressed from my apprenticeship, I took a week-long holiday off and rested at home. You should maintain a healthy work-life balance, manage stress effectively, and take breaks when needed. You're not you when you're tired, mentally strained and hungry...!

Reflect And Improve

Regularly reflect on your work ethic and areas for improvement. Set personal goals and actively work towards enhancing your work ethic over time.

Improving your work ethic is an ongoing process that requires self-awareness, discipline, and a commitment to personal growth. Some people can do it alone whilst other people need a little push, such as myself and my manager.

Think over the tips I gave and see how you can change things to improve your own work ethic. If you're not working, this can be applied to a school setting or something you can be wary of when looking to start working!

their blog updates inconsistently but is INCREDIBLY organized.

post-corruption sydney is a menace. still painstakingly organized but a bit less active on their main accounts. they’ve moved to twitter.

might have accidentally cyberbullied kylar. they made a callout post about it but sydney couldn’t see it because kylar immediately blocked them.

everybody who follows whitney either has post notifications on or has them muted.

on one hand it’s really funny to see the dumb shit they get up to. on the other hand there is so much dumb shit.

uses a lot of emojis and hashtags ‘‘ironically’’. definitely the most up-to-date on what’s based and cringe, anyways.

life update: student ash -> lecturer ash come fall of this year

(details under the cut if anyone wants to know but this studyblr is likely gonna see a few changes.)

Taking a gap year before my PhD due to issues with securing academic funding, so I'll be trading in my student hat for a teaching one! Incredibly strange to be able to call myself a member of the faculty at a university - well not yet, not until the fall. Hasn't quite sunk it yet to be honest; everything's still very up in the air yet but it's a whirlwind of news every day. Lots to do.

In terms of changes to this studyblr, I'll need to see where I am come fall. Most of my work is digital now, which makes photo posts more tricky to create. A lot of life changes are also happening, as I'll be transitioning from a student to a member of the faculty (!) so I can't promise much content, but we'll find out together where life takes me.

Until then, I'll likely be on hiatus until classes start in September, so if I don't see you before then - have a wonderful summer~
