Not me making an outline for a fic, knowing it's going to be a fairly long one, and expecting 2,000-3,000 words tops (maybe 4,000 if I'm being detailed. 5,000 if I'm being SUPER detailed)

This is only supposed to be the outline. Not even the rough draft. I'm just putting down the most basic series of events the stories is going to follow, and I'm still hashing this thing out at 7,000 words. I haven't even reached the middle yet.

Fuck me and my natural inclination towards long and complex plots.

But goddamn am I having fun with this.

One day I'm going to figure out how to write sweet and simple one-shots. I'm going to figure out how to make a short story.

yes!!! it's me!!! i'm ryomina fan (one of many)!!! thank you for visiting my askbox, i'll do my best to answer all of the questions because it always makes me happy to see that ryomina sparks joy for people! :D

...this got really long because i like linking to things, so i'm putting it under a read more (IM VERY NORMAL ABOUT THEM)

how did i get into it? i got into persona 3 around august 2021 through the movies- at the time my only experience with the persona series was with P5R / P5S / P5D. p3 was the one that interested me the most (i thought minato was very pretty + i caught wind that the themes of the game were very resonant with people). i picked the movies over the game because i'm a guy who plays games at a snails pace, haha.

admittedly, i did latch onto ryomina because of the scenes in the third and fourth movie (i have mentioned in the tags of this art i drew how much i felt like i was exploding and blasting off to the moon watching it).

but what really dug me into the ryomina hole (and what has kept me there) was thinking about how much ryoji encapsulates the themes of p3- and how interconnected his fate is with minato. i wrote some musings about their dynamic here, if you're interested!

tl;dr: what if we were both boys and we were mirror images of each other and i inherited your kindness and looks but god doomed our narrative even though we're soulmates

on ryomina fanworks recommendations:

regarding fics: i'm going to assume that you've probably read the fics that have the highest kudo ratings on them, so i won't really be listing those.

a personal favorite fic that i always hold close to my heart is Eurydice's Vow by crescentmoontea, which explores the idea of ryomina in p5r's third semester. this was the first fic i read about ryomina and it made me tear up lots...

i also think a lot about I Alone Await You by Nail_gun, literally scrumptious writing that captures the ryomina dynamic so so well. actually check out Nail_gun's other ryomina fics while you're at it too!

other fun fic i'm fond of: can't get my mind out of those memories (what were they?) by foxmulder_whereartthou. ryoji being homeless lives rent free in my head and it's all because of this fic. there's a bunch of other fun ryominas from the same author too (i still need to read them)

BkZa555 also has some fun AU scenarios if you're into that too, notably with Zagreus (P5-Setting, Ryoji focus) and The Definition of Insanity (TIME LOOP fuckery!), but they're currently ongoing.

these were some ones that came to my mind first- as i have the strongest recollection reading them. admittedly i haven't really been reading fic this year, so i don't have many recommendations from fic that came out this year. but if you're so inclined to let ryomina consume your soul, i definitely recommend giving the newer works in the ryomina tag a look-see and see if it strikes your fancy!

as a side note, i do have a few ryomina fics that i've bookmarked on my ao3 here, though i have to say that i'm not sure how well they hold up in terms of like... what i would seek out of a fic these days. but they made past me happy so i bookmarked them, LOL. it's kind of outdated (my collection of fic recs has my old username *disintegrates*).

regarding doujinshi: i have not read all the ryomina doujinshi available, but as a starting point, please take a look at this list from pandora-scans from livejournal!

notably, this is where you can find the strawberry-chan say good bye doujin- which features a small and cute comic from shuji sogabe (the p3/p4 manga artist), as well as other artists. the existence of this doujinshi is the funniest thing to me because it's like "HEY if you're wondering what the volume 8 cover is really gay it's because sogabe contributed to a ryomina doujin." this fact makes my head spin (positive). it explains a lot about the manga.

regarding persona side material:

i know you didn't ask for these but i thought that i mine as well list these too, since i feel that the side materials have some fun expansions on ryoji and minato's interactions. i haven't... watched/read all of these but, hey, i like to share these things!

for comic anthologies for the persona series (some of which have ryoji!). if you're interested in reading them, here's a scanlation index from maboroshi-no on tumblr. i don't think this is a comprehensive list, but i think it will be a great starting point!

there's always going to be a lot of fun ways to enjoy rotating ryomina around in one's brain, i think- they're a pairing with such fun symbolic imagery that is So Deep (to me) but ALSO they're immensely hilarious and weird guys (affectionate). so i love to share these things in hopes that it gives you joy too! they are the most couple ever (to me) (i'm biased)

“So basically, your roommate is a cat,” Reggie’s date says, more of a statement than a question.

Reggie stops to think. He’d not really considered it before, but Bobby is very temperamental about touch. He likes to be left alone until he doesn’t. He’s relatively predictable but only if you can read his body language. Yeah, a cat kind of fits. But roommate? That… Might be stretching it. 

Reggie hums, “Yes to the cat, no to the roommate.”

He’s met with a curious look.

“Roommate might not be the most accurate way to describe our relationship,” he explains. “Bobby and I… Well, it’s complicated.”

“Complicated how? Are you not…” they trail off, obviously confused about what the hell Reggie is doing here if he’s got a “complicated” relationship with his “roommate.”

“We’re not… together. Well, we are. But,” Reggie takes a deep breath.

His date is growing frustrated. “Are you wasting my time? I’m not really up for being a homewrecker or somebody’s experiment.”

“No!” Reggie cries, putting his hands out to stop them from standing. “No, it’s not like that! I swear, it’s just…” He takes another deep breath. “It’s just. We aren’t labeled as anything. He’s my best friend. And we also make out and have sex sometimes.”

His date starts to gather their things in preparation to leave.

“No, wait! Let me explain. Please?”

They sigh, “Fine. You can have one minute.”

“Fuck. Shit. Okay. So Bobby’s not into dating and romance. He doesn’t want to hold me back from anything that I might want from other people. So we have an agreement that I can date freely, as if I were single. I try to be open about our relationship together from the start but it’s… Well, it’s complicated. Anyone who’d want to see me long term would have to be okay with what I have with Bobby. But I’m not like, cheating on him or anything.”

Reggie can tell that they’re processing and sits in silence while they do. He fiddles with the ends of his sleeves, his knee bouncing, while he waits. 

“Okay,” they finally say, “and like, you’re allowed to have physical relationships with the people you’re dating too? Kissing and sex?”

Reggie nods, “Yeah, honestly everything is pretty much normal. Except I have a Bobby.”

They cough out a dry laugh, “like a cat.”

Reggie grins, “Sure. A very large, very needy cat who I sometimes… y’know.”

“Well, it’s not perfect. But okay.”

Reggie’s brow furrows slightly. “Okay?” he asks, confused by the unexpectedly cool response.

They nod, “Yeah. Okay. I like you, Reggie. Let’s see where this goes.”

Without thinking:

My very first fic. It is finished, it has pacing, it has an arc, it has an actual story... The prose might need a bit of polishing, but I think it's still some of my best work!

My most artistic fic:

I just... I don't know. I feel like it's very personal and almost has something lyrical about it and I feel very deeply about it, even if it is perhaps a little pretentious.

The third one is hard, though...

I'm very torn between something like A Night at the Opera, which I'm still extremely proud of, In the Palm of his Hand, which I love and hope to finish one day, and even The Cake is a Lie. Though the last two are probably not nearly as good in their current published form as they are in my WIPs, where I have additional material that really adds A Lot to them 😅

But I feel like I also want to put one of my metas here, because I have a bunch of those and they're important to me and feel like they're out of contention for this sort of thing. So here's my probably favourite bit of meta writing:

I love Rios and Agnes! And I find their budding relationship fascinating and gentle and lovely and want to think about it more. And this was such a great way to look at their interactions and psychology, and to explain why I think they make sense together.

(Also: it always reminds me of the incredible "Your Light on Me" by @regionalpancake and the gorgeous Love Comes Softly by @smhalltheurlsaretaken, which is essentially the same argument but as an amazing fic (and gorgeous podfic by @thelaithlyworm). And these kinds of connections always make everything better 🥰)

a thought I’ve been having since i started reading and writing DP x DC material:

The concept of “AU Curses”

It is known that each genre has a certain set of tropes (some of them clichés from how overused they are). Still, they have something defining of them. Music, scenarios, character archetypes, etc. The same can be said for fanfics. Specifically, for each genere, sub-genre, sub-sub-genre, etc. they have.

AUs have their own tropes because they align more closely to traditional genres. However, it’s when AUs take place in the universe of a different fandom or when crossovers occur that it gets interesting. The tropes/classical formula for each respective universe influences the other, creating something unique that then transforms into its own set of tropes (if created with sufficient frequency across the fandom).

The Danny Phantom x DC crossovers have become their very own sub-fandom, so large that some people might even consider it separate from the original fandom. It does have its own unique set of tropes, heavily influenced by DC’s classical formula, which tends to lean a lot into the darker, grittier aspects of heroic actions, human nature, and the self.

This doesn’t mean that the DP formula has had no say. No, completely on the contrary. DP formula overtakes the story when it comes to the story’s Main Conflict and some of DC’s mysteries (canon or writer-stated). It also takes charge when it comes to a few of the slightly nonsensical (endearing) scenarios the original DP formula is known for.

This all being said, one big trope common in this newly formed DP x DC formula, is that the story (naturally) always begins either with an introduction of a Bat family member into Danny’s life or vice versa. The city of Gotham is often times a catalyst for both of these things.

Across most DP x DC crossover fics, the following outline (the formula) is commonly read. When Danny encounters the first sign of a catalyst (Gotham or the JL or an alien ghost, etc), it is usually at the start of a new period in his life. A fresh start, a rescue, a safe haven, or a new relationship. Each of this immediately lead into being involved (as a civilian or his alias) with a Bat family member (also as a civilian or their alias). More often than not, this then leads to a series of misfortunes in Danny’s life or nosy investigations into his private life, which also causes its own set of issues. Depending on the catalyst, these misfortunes can be downright disastrous or a mere annoyance.

One can interpret this in two ways. It can be an AU Curse specific to the DP x DC crossovers. As soon as that catalyst pops up, Danny becomes automatically destined to meet the Batfam and his life begins to drastically change, for better or worse.

Or it can be considered a DC curse, where the moment a new variable is introduced, more new, crazier things begin to follow it and the situation becomes progressively worse or more convoluted (or both) for all the characters present in the plot. This DC curse would be an aspect of its respective universe that almost completely overtook most plot tropes within the DP x DC fandom, in small or grander ways.

It’s interesting to see how the fandom has developed all of this on a near subconscious level, simply because writers took their favorite and the most liked aspects of either universe, and used it to shape their stories. To begin it, all a writer has to do is introduce the catalyst. Everything else will follow.

Interestingly enough, the AU Curse can also be seen from an outside, reader perspective in the sense that fans of the original source (Not the crossover material/formula itself) will sometimes be subjected to it. This happens when the crossover material begins edging into or gaining popularity over the original source, so its fans begin seeing less of the material they enjoy and more of the crossover one. They see a catalyst (crossover fanart, a fellow fan who starts getting into it, or a writer who starts creating content for it), and suddenly the original source is overtaken by all the newly formed characteristics of the crossover material.

I might be interpreting some things wrong, or not have the full scope of the dubbed “DC Curse” I outlined. So if anyone wants to share their own views or correct anything, you’re more than welcome to!

I have... six Hearthian ocs that aren't Granite and four of them only show up in one fic (and a wip)

Silica and Nickel are identical twin hatchlings from the everyone lives!au- Silica is/is going to be more adventurous, more into exploring, louder, more excitable. Nickel is going to be calmer, and a little quieter. They're mirror twins, so, freckles are mirrored (...I. don't know if Hearthians are left or right handed? I'm gonna assume they're ambidextrous though, but, if they aren't, probably Silica is left handed and Nickel is right handed)(Mirror twins- the fast version, if the twins looked at each other and both raised their dominant hand to touch their head, they would see the other doing that like they were looking in a mirror)

Silica is going to find something exciting to do on Timber Hearth, but, Nickel is the one who'll want to go into space... a couple years after Tephra.

Older Hearthians are Quartz, Jasper, Anatase, and Old Nickel.

Old Nickel is the oldest of the group/oldest living Hearthian in the pre-game fics right now. They're the former brewmaster/person who did Porphy's job in game. They're calm and friendly and they're fond of a hatchling that'll come help them out periodically.

Anatase was the mayor before Rutile- they're fair, but there's a point where they stop being lenient to hatchlings or adults who're supposed to know better and they tend towards harsher consequences than necessary.

Jasper was the medical person/hatchling caretaker that trained Gneiss and got phased out of the hatchling caretaking... pretty much around the time the wip im doing rn is taking place, mostly because they're not as good at it as Gneiss and for spilling 'you two are related' info several years earlier than they should have (My Feldspar and Gossan are half-siblings, but also, you're not supposed to know til you're old enough not to ignore everyone else in favor of sticking with your sibling). They're only allowed to help in specific circumstances- like, Chert was too little when hatched and Gneiss needed extra hands.

Quartz... I like a lot. They're mean, rude to the hatchlings, don't like change and will fight it, and they're not even good at their job. They're the former mechanic who started training Slate, and house fires have gone down despite. How Slate is. because Slate doesn't care about safety but they do want things working so they don't cut corners as much as Quartz who just wants things working enough and doesn't care if they break again tomorrow. They're single-handedly responsible for holding back Hearthian tech for multiple years because they think the space program is gonna end in total failure and it's not worth continuing to try
