Discotek Media is releasing the original Cutie Honey TV series on SD-BD. The release date is February 25th, 2025.
I did the subtitles (and then some) for this release, which is honestly a dream come true. I was only 14 years old when I imported the Japanese DVDs with my own allowance money. Never in a million years did I think I'd get to work on its official US release!
This Blu-ray will have a completely new and improved translation from the original DVDs. Names and terminology will be consistent with Discotek's New Cutey Honey, Re: Cutie Honey and Cutie Honey The Live releases.
My friend and magical girl enthusiast, Ayumi Shinozaki, did a lot of translation work for this release. She especially helped out with a lot of trickier dialogue, namely 90% of Danbei and Ms. Alphonne's lines. My good friend @sailorfuncomics was also a huge help by proofreading the subtitles.
And of course, I want to make a shout out to Justin Sevakis and David Miranda for making this all possible. We all put a lot of work into this release, so I'm glad to finally see it come out! Please support more Cutie Honey in the US by pre-ordering a copy!

Some sad news to share - Eiko Masuyama, the iconic original voice of both Fujiko Mine (Lupin III) and Cutie Honey/Honey Kisaragi (Cutie Honey), has passed away at the age of 89 due to pneumonia. The first voice of Fujiko til she passed on the role to Miyuki Sawashiro, she was the last surviving member of the show's original core cast. A prolific actress in Japan, while many of her roles were in things not released in the US, she was also the voice of Princess Snow Kaguya in Sailor Moon S: The Movie. RIP to a true icon, whose amazing performances will never be forgotten.

This question has been turning over and over in my head since I receive it. It is a true thrill to be asked about my Showa magical girl project.

Having thought deeply about this question, I wanted to add that I consider each iteration of Cutie Honey (キューティーハニー ) to be within my project because Honey debuted in the Showa (昭和) era, even though her adventures continued into the Heisei (平成) period and now even into these Reiwa (令和) days with the recent stage show.

Similarly I include the second TV anime iteration of Sally The Witch (魔法使いサリー) to be within the bounds of this project. Sally is a quintessential Showa magical girl, having taken the archetype to the screen for the first time in 1966. So the fact that the second show debuted on the October 9th, 1989 and Emperor Hirohito had died months earlier on January 7th, turning the era, doesn’t take it out of the running for deep engagement here.
I feel similarly about Kiki’s Delivery Service (魔女の宅急便), the famous film adaptation of which was also released in the first few months of the Heisei era, on July 29th, 1989. The original novella, however, came out in 1985, so, again: Showa magical girl.
Hi! I know your prime focus is Showa Majokko/Majokko-adjacent stuff but I'm just nosey lol.
I know you've watched the 70s Cutie Honey and the live-actions but have you watched any other Heisei iterations? Shin, Re:, Flash, or Universe? Do you have a favorite? I'm personally on Shin and it's really fun, the better budget really helps the show out.
Yes, I’ve watched each version of Cutie Honey with two exceptions. I haven’t seen all of Cutie Honey: The Live and I haven’t seen any of the stage shows, though I just ordered the DVD of Cutie Honey Emotional.

My favorite, by far, is Cutie Honey Flash. I love that it incorporated more shoujo genre elements. Plus, it means everything to me that it was produced by the same studio that worked on Sailor Stars. It looks similar, it sounds similar, and it gives me a warm and fuzzy feeling.
