How to get a guy in 12 months - Chapter 2
“We should get a cat,” Steve breaks the silence after another one and a half episodes.
Eddie turns his head and gives Steve an unimpressed look.
“You go on one unsuccessful date and are ready to turn into a crazy old cat lady?”
“Shut up,” Steve kicks Eddie's stomach, hard enough not to be gentle, soft enough to not actually hurt. Eddie laughs at it and snips his finger against Steve’s leg. “I just think it’d suit us.”
If Steve’s life was a comedy tv show or a romcom they would definitely have a cat, because every lonely adult living in a run down but charming flat in the big city, looking for love, needs a cat. Steve thinks about it a second longer. Actually, if his life was a romcom Eddie would be ten times kookier, downright weird actually, full on spaced out the entire time and probably have a pet boa constrictor or one of those poisonous lizards with the weird collar. When in reality reptiles kinda freak Eddie out. Despite the snake tattoo because, I’m gay Steve, of course I’m gonna get a tattoo of a snake, duh.
Steve is glad that his life isn’t a romcom because Hollywood wouldn’t be kind to Eddie, wouldn’t do him justice, and Steve doesn’t want a cat just for the aesthetics.
He wants a cat because there is a shelter right on his way to work. Because the thought of such a small, precious being, trapped all alone in a dark box, unloved, unwanted makes him sad enough to distract himself from his own sadness. Because he has a little bit of a savior complex and a thing for strays. Because he hates coming home to an empty apartment on nights Eddie is out. And because maybe nurturing and taking care of a cat will not make him feel like he spoils everything he touches, like he wasn’t raised with his hands being shaped into fists, like maybe if he tries real hard he can fix instead of break.

Summary:
Joker is growing frustrated with how he is unable to control spirits. Despite being told that he is as much a Smasher as anyone else living in Dracula's Castle, it seems like there is something wrong with him that makes him unable to catch up with others. He accepts Byleth's offer to teach him the art of training with spirits, even though he is unnerved by the former professor's lack of emotions. As the two newcomers start to become acquainted with each other, the group they have been living with start to become more and more stressed over something that they do not quite want to discuss with them. All they are informed is that there's a dangerous Smasher in the basement and that they are prohibited from going down there until they resolve that issue.
Unfortunately for them, Joker was never one to follow rules that did not make sense to him. Double unfortunately for them, Byleth was very good at his job of never leaving a student unattended.
