I got to meet Eric Stuart for the first time at C2E2 2024 and it was so great to talk to him! He loved my cosplay and was so excited about this art I made for him, he told me all about the new giant portfolio book he bought to put it all in and told me "You better have signed it!" He especially enjoyed what was going on in the background. xD
I'm glad that I went with something funny, and with the way he was joking around during the selfie later on he definitely picked up on the fact that besides my dad, he influenced my sense of humor, there were some good jokes.

It's been A LONG TIME, but I feel I am so gonna have to catch up on my thoughts with Birds of Prey. So tonight I'm gonna do a three-parter.
Tonight, part 1 will cover #9-10. So let's start with my thoughts on the two issues.
Starting off, this issue means a bit to me three-fold as #1 it occurred during the character's anniversary month.
#2 Artist Jonathan Case once again draws the character (having gone to town with the character in Batgirls #14).
#3 said GORGEOUS AAPI variant cover by Phillip Tan and Elmer Santos. I remember seeing Tan's Cass at a C2E2 a few years ago and nabbing the print (for myself and a friend). He always drew a nice Cass, and I'm glad AT LAST he drew an official one.
As for the issue itself, it's a nice beginning piece to the new arc as the Birds are basically lost trying to find Babs, along with figuring out their new surroundings.
For the special costume given to Cass this issue. I saw an article via Screenrant going into detail on how edgy this suit gives off.
I agree it does, but also to a degree of how maybe she views herself internally. Though of all the unique designs, I'm quite curious on how the artists throughout this arc corresponded with writer Kelly Thompson on the unique looks to each Bird.
Regardless the "Victorian Era" Birds as I view this issue give a very Gothic style and lend to the twists and turns this issue has.
Which, leads into one of the major moments Cass gets in the issue.
The first is a move hyped on the covers during the first arc: Barda launching Cass via a fastball special.
The moment had me squeeing as we get our first tag team move of the two and I hope there is MOAR from them besides the old classic (which you can't go wrong with).
The Birds rescue Babs, and for the briefest of moments everything "seems" right, but well Thompson remembers something OTHER writers kind of neglect with Cass.
In that, she can tell when someone is not truly themselves and is a walking lie detector.
It's a brief, but if "you're in the know" of the character, yeah Cass would easily see via a few steps of body language and behavior that Babs wasn't really Babs.
It's a character quirk that a lot of writers usually overlook coughs some Batman writers coughs.
Again, Dinah trusts Cass 100% with her insight (as the series has already established) and attacks "Babs" and we get out fight in the issue: the Birds vs. this mangled Bat Babs creature.
This issue also feels like the closest meta Thompson has regarding the whole Babs as Batgirl in the issue too. If you take in the fact that her costume has a rather "classic" look to it. And well...
And that leads me to the only downer of the issue because like the Birds themselves, as the reader we are left clueless as they are as to whom or what is behind all of this.
However, for this "one and done" different look. I'll give it being something totally different and again this series trying something new (akin to what we've gotten in the first arc).
Case's art is still stunning, and though more minimalist (compared to his Batgirls issues) still packs a punch. The costumes and crazy demon she-bat Babs still pops in my head.
I just wish we got more information other than the teases for the issue, but this is an unfolding story and like the Birds I'm here for the ride.
Birds of Prey #10 continues this wacky out-of-this-world adventure this time with a 50s twist that has the same dark edge of the prior issue. So what about the Cass within? Well...
Again, another artist of Batgirls helps with the issue as we get Robbi Rodriguez (who's been drawing A LOT of Cass granting 2016 me a wish) and Gavin Guidry on art duties.
Their art compliments the setting within the issue with this 50s to 60s style with a dark undertone (like the prior issue).
So the issue begins with the newest suits we get a '66 version of Cass. The suit itself uses a bit of what we got with the '66 bat costumes but we get Cass bits to it. The bat symbol. The belt. Oh hey! A domino mask! How Black Bat of this suit!
I do love the look, and for a "66' Batgirl" look for Cass checks all the boxes making it different from Babs' look.
Though I have to admit it's weird that Babs herself looks a lot more like her short-lived Sean Murphy bat ears look than something more to her '66.
We also get A LOT of exposition in the issue of what's going on, why someone is targeting Babs, and HOW this is happening.
And it works for me given well we need that info dump and this does feel like the part where we NEEDED this. Even if it does feel like a slight retread of Megaera from the first arc.
However, with one tiny bat twist…
The big fight for this issue is the Birds vs. a corrupted Barda. And oh dear me she is utterly terrifying. But like I said we get a twist, and it is SOOOOO Cass-characterization perfection.
Instead of a brutal fight between the two new friends we get Cass trying to reason to Barda, knowing the New God can beat this on her own.
The moment between the two is just SOOO Cass. Akin to so many stuff with the character in the past. Thompson just GETS Cassandra Cain as a character.🥺
If there's any really nitpick of this issue I have is this issue felt so quick. Like we get so much info, Possessed-Barda, Cass does Cass thing, and that's it. I kind of wish we got more but I get we're sprinkling the Sin and Vixen stuff for later.
But man, Barda/Cass are just the anchor of this series period. Their friendship is something I always wanted and this series hasn't disappointed. I can't wait when Thompson repays this with Barda coming to Cass's aide or does this.
I KNOW THIS IS COMING.
I just wonder WHEN and if I'll have tissues for this moment when Barda unleashes hell or shows this compassion to free Cass from whatever bind.
But yeah Birds of Prey has been my favorite book of the early half of the month, with Tec always complimenting it for the back half.

so blogs instead of acknowledging that they were wrong 100% about pr for chris and his troll are now: im going to the chris pine side. lolll okay//
They are just over Evans and his antics. He hasn’t given us much of anything besides his cringy compilations with her. He’s been radio silent. He hasn’t promoted C2E2 or his ASP zoom call. As they have all said they’re here for the mess, but they are allowed to have other interests while Evans consistently gives us nothing. I’d rather see them thirst over Pine than rehash Shanna’s wedding and Tara’s Halloween party.
Here's the thing for me: I never signed up to be an Alba blog, ever, and that's all the asks that come in these days, and I'm sick of it. I've been sick of it since before Pumpkingate. But yet it's a reality, no matter what viewpoint one chooses to see it from. (I'm still on the transactional relationship train, with a large toxic caboose.)
Even when I do my posts about old stuff from Jenny days, somehow the asks that come in about those posts are about Alba. When we get some real news - like the C2E2 announcement, or that Public Exchange thing from yesterday - still the asks that come in are majority about Alba or her friends. No thank you! I'm deleting that shit all day. I have to accept that a huge portion of this fandom is now not even the Chris Evans fandom, but the Alba Baptista obsessives. And I don't want that here, if I can help it.
But, yeah, we have nothing new, not really. He's quit posting for the most part. There's little new news on his career front. When I post about The Receipts, it gets little traction. So I'm gonna pad out my time here with my other interests. Hope y'all like ancient history and art, because you're about to get a shit ton of it!

Reblogging for the art, the C2E2 info is from 2015. Ignore that part. I really wanna make another graphite pic like the center one. It takes quite a while compared to others, but it is soothing and delightful in the process. [Image Descriptions: First image is an outdated advertisement for a booth at Chicago Comic & Entertainment Expo. Second image is Wirt and Greg on a wall. Beatrice is coming to land on Wirt's upraised arm. There are decorative but mostly bare trees framing them, with thorny vines wrapping along the bottom of the wall and trees. One vine is wrapping ominously around Wirt's leg. A large red tinted lantern in in the corner, and a small black turtle is hiding in the vines opposite it.
Third image is a graphite drawing of a giant lizard sprawled down a ridge. There is a sword in it's belly, dripping blood into the pool of water the beast is sinking into. A man sits in the foreground, half in the water as if he is wearily cleaning his stained clothing. He is muscular and has scars and burns, both old and new. Amongst the trees nearby are a helmet and other pieces of armor.
Fourth image is Steven Universe, holding his fist triumphantly in the air, pulling his shirt up just enough to catch a glimpse of the gem in his belly. Small version of the other gems are crawling over him: Garnet sits on his fist, Pearl and Amethyst on his shoulder, Peridot and Jasper crawl up his jeans, while Lapis sits hidden behind his foot. The background is a bright rainbow gradient.
End image descriptions.]
LAST MINUTE REMINDER! If you are going to be at C2E2 this weekend, come and check out my booth! Artist Alley E4! I’m be there with my buddy Blake Packard, who does wicked awesome videogame-inspired oil paintings. You heard that right OIL PAINTINGS. Anyhow, I got some new art available for prints, and you can check out bigger versions on my deviantart.

Somnacanth from Monster Hunter Cosplayer: @the_gnome_queen // photo: quachstar.jpg
I’ve been cosplaying for 9 years and every time I choose a cosplay I like to add something new to my skillset. Sometimes it’s from a franchise I’m deeply familiar with and sometimes it’s just something that catches my eye. Somnacanth was an example of the latter. I saw the concept art for the armor and was immediately drawn in by how different it was. The colors, the design, and the potential to add my own details to the armor was what attracted me. But I don’t like being ignorant of the source material and I hadn’t played Monster Hunter in years, so I started picked up Monster Hunter Rise. What I love about the game is the creature and world design, as well as the ability to craft materials into your own weapons and armor.
Although the world of Monster Hunter doesn’t technically have magic, there are similar qualities to the experience. The Somnacanth Armor reminded me of something inspired by mysticism and the creature itself has almost supernatural qualities that I wanted to capture in the amor and details. I love finding new technology and incorporating it into my cosplays. With a recent project I discovered tiny LCD screens that play back eyeball visual effects with movement. I knew I wanted to incorporate that into the monster head prop. However, I had never used that technology before and so it took some time to learn and master the coding needed to customize that effect as well as the wiring involved.
One of my favorite aspects of cosplay is connecting with other creators and “talking shop”. Each year, NYCC draws extremely talented individuals to compete in the Crown Champsionships of Cosplay. I’ve been able to meet some truly amazing makers who are so giving and passionate about sharing knowledge within the cosplay community. NYCC was one of the first conventions I returned to in a post pandemic world and so it’s special to me in that way.
This was my third time competing in the Crown Championships at NYCC and while I had won a category in the past, this was my first time placing in the contest. It’s truly an honor (and so humbling) to be recognized by such inspiring judges and stand alongside other cosplayers who are at the top of their game. I’ve never travelled to a convention that hasn’t been within driving distance from my home. The chance to attend C2E2 for the finals and meet other cosplayers from around the country and the world is thrilling! I hope to make the Monster Hunter community proud!
Something I really love about cosplay is seeing people’s reactions to something I’ve worked so hard on. With my Somnacanth Armor I was especially proud of all the details I added. From hand beading to lighting sfx and foam smithing to 3d modelling I am floored when people get to see the details I’ve added. There’s nothing more gratifying than someone saying “look at this…but then look at this….and then there’s this!”
I love sharing knowledge about making things. When someone reaches out with a question about how I did something, or how they can learn a new skill it feels good. I hope my passion for this craft and community comes across in what I share.
Cosplay has given me the opportunity to have a creative outlet among a group of likeminded people. Growing up, my father always taught me that age is just a number and if you love something you should embrace it. He passed away just before I started cosplay as a hobby and so I threw myself into it to deal with my grief. I was initially reluctant to share my hobby with those in my everyday life, but as I learned more about myself through crafting, I became more confident and proud of my creations. I realized I wanted to be the person that younger me would be proud of.
I know a lot of people find them creepy, but I really just love gnomes! I’m totally dating myself, but I grew up watching a cartoon called David the Gnome. Gnomes have always kind of followed me throughout my life. Friends and family give them to me as gifts. They’re all over my house in small and large ways. I even have two gnome tattoos!

C2E2 2012 : Hawkeye Announcement
Published April 13, 2012 by Tim Stevens
Matt Fraction and David Aja reunite for a new ongoing series starring the Avenging Archer !
The time has come this August to restring the bow and check your fletching when writer Matt Fraction and artist David Aja place Clint Barton front and center in the new ongoing HAWKEYE series.
The duo, collaborating for the first time since revitalizing Iron Fist, along with Ed Brubaker, in IMMORTAL IRON FIST, have fallen back into the rhythm almost without a hitch.
“It's great,” asserts Fraction. “[David]'s even nuttier than where we left off, and I remain no bed of roses, so it's been a blast so far. He's just blowing the doors off the joint. He's a monster. He's the best.”
As to as why it took Earth’s Mightiest Marksman to bring them back together, Aja points to a longtime personal favoritism for the sarcastic bowman.
“Hawkeye was one my favorite characters when a kid,” he recalls. “One of first Marvel comics I read was AVENGERS #25, and I [fell] in love with [the] guy; he acted as real person, was a complete jerk, so I suppose I identified with him.”
For Fraction, the archer represents a challenge.
“Never had the chance to write a character like him, or to do a book like this before,” the writer divulges. “And I wanted to chronicle him in an ongoing series because it'd keep me from getting bored. Repetition bores me to death.
I had this idea for how to do a book that wasn't like anything else we'd seen him in before, wasn't like anything I'd done before, and couldn't stop thinking about.”
That idea hinges on how the Avenger lives his life when not around his numerous teammates and allies.
“HAWKEYE is more about what inspires Clint Barton,” Fraction explains, “We got Clint in AVENGERS, SECRET AVENGERS, and anywhere else at any given time -- but we wanted HAWKEYE to be about what Clint does when he's not at work, about what drives the guy.”
“He's got some stuff coming up in [Avengers Vs. X-Men] and afterwards he's in a place where he's gotta figure out what he's doing with himself and why. What moves him, what's meaningful for him.”
Similarly searching for purpose, Kate Bishop, former Young Avenger and the Marvel Universe’s other Hawkeye, will quickly fall in with her namesake.
“She's his junior partner, his apprentice,” says Fraction. “It's a very Avengers relationship--meaning Steed & Peel -- and she's as adrift as he is.
What the hell are these two doing with their lives? Turns out, helping people is what they have to do to get through the night. In costume, in life, doesn't matter. Good guys don't punch a time card at 5:00.”
Aja plans to tweak his style a touch in order to best capture the two bow wielding searchers and match the book’s tone.
“I’m thinking lately I'm going more iconic, more cartoony. You know, less is more,” he explains. “Your style evolving is the perfect excuse when you are cutting corners.”
“Note to self: remember to do lot of black silhouettes and black panels.”
The stripped down art nicely goes along with Fraction’s almost singular focus on the two leads, forgoing the team-ups both have frequently found themselves a part of.
“A few [other heroes appear], but very peripherally,” he admits. “The villains are more important to keep an eye on.”
Asked to elaborate on who those villains might be, the writer opts to play things close to the vest.
“Some old classics, some new relevant street-level guys and maybe like the most wanted man in the world?”

Where to begin!
@c2e2 was an absolute blast. I am so incredibly lucky I got to be a part of this year’s Artist Alley. Lucky I got to design this year’s official merch, and lucky I got to reconnect with old friends, meet new friends, and find kinship with fellow nerds.
This was a balm for my little art soul that I didn’t know I needed. Thank you all who came to say hello and support me, I won’t ever forget it, thank you from the bottom of my heart.
Thank you, @garbagefruit for being the literal best hype man and booth babe anyone could ask for, I couldn’t have done it without you.
