thinking about the way zac plays pib. about how every time he goes off on his own and gathers VITAL information he doesn't say 'and i tell them everything ive learned' like tim does but consciously controls the narrative each time. he always says just enough for it to make sense but not enough that the others know the whole story. he always says exactly what he wants and how he wants it to, never leaving it up for the imagination bc then he's not in full control of what ppl know about him and he CANNOT have that. it really works well with how careful pib is about his story and what he shares and to whom bc he always had to do that, right? his words and his trickery w them has always been one of the ONLY things to protect him and the fact that even in such a trusted company, a family by the end, he still NEEDS to control how much and what he gives away is soooo brilliant to me i love you zac you always always get it

so silly of zac for pib to just be named puss in boots. everyone else who didn’t have a name got one. rosamund, timothy, gerard, ylfa. but nah, puss in boots is puss in boots and nothing else. i feel like it really accentuates the whole trickster thing.

@underrated-d20-event day 5!! With the theme Penalty (though loosely interpreted here), I chose to write about a couple of my favorite Neverafter NPCs - have I ever said I love love love tricksters before? :3c

Wheel of Fortune (317 words)

"I'm sorry, Cat, I truly am," Fox whined, even though Pib could tell that he was the furthest thing from sorry, "but you've had your chance, haven't you?"

"It was cut short," Pib hissed in return, his tail swishing wildly through the air.

Fox's snout stretched into a grotesque sort of cynical rictus. "Yeah, well, should've thought about that before you went off and died to help some kids. Not a very trickster-y way to go, is it now?"

Pib's hair stood on its own as he yowled and pounced on Fox, who retorted with an undignified yelp. The two of them went rolling, clawing and biting at each other in the midst of a furry tornado.

"You know nothing," Pib meowed into the canine's ear, making it recoil in shock.

It wasn't until he turned around, however, that he realised that he'd fallen right into the trap that had been laid for him.

For while he had been busy fighting off Fox, Rabbit had stepped forth, put on his boots and his ring and strapped his daggers to his belt.

"Sorry, Cat," Rabbit chuckled, "but Fox said it, you've had your chance. Besides, I'm quite curious to see how well I fare inside of this twisted story of yours. Better luck next time, ay?"

Pib bolted up, running madly towards Rabbit to try and stop him, but it was too late: it had already walked into the mist and disappeared, leaving nothing but the frayed grass he had stepped on behind.

Pib, now Cat again, couldn't do anything but fall back on the grass, soon joined by a newly calm Fox that lied down, spreading his arms open as if welcoming the sky.

"Looks like we got out-tricked," Fox simply stated. "Nothing left to do but hope your miller's son will fare well without you, hm?"

Cat simply buried his face in his paws and groaned.

SOMEONE please write the Neverafter modern au fanfic where Gerard impulsively becomes a foster parent for Pinocchio and Ylfa after he and Elody “take a break” (it’s not a divorce, he insists, it’s temporary) and because of course he let Elody keep the mansion, he’s not going to make her move out he’s not a monster, he now lives in a little suburban house next to the overly indulgent Timothy Goose, his husband, his son Jack, and his incorrigible cat Pib. Soon after his cousin Rosamund turns up on his doorstep not offering any explanation, but her parents don’t seem to be looking for her and Gerard knows a little too much about parents who don’t look for their children, so she lives there too now and is helping out with Gerard’s strange little foster kids. Ft. Gerard sleeping on the couch every night because of course he gave the master bedroom to Rosamund and Ylfa and Pinocchio share a room with a bunk bed; Timothy helping out where he can, most often in the form of giving way too many cookies; Pinocchio dragging Pib everywhere and trying to use the cat as a scapegoat for half the mischief he gets up to (the other half is things Pib actually did but no one believes a cat would be capable of); the weirdly intense social worker Mr. Wolf; Timothy’s coworkers at the local school Scheherazade and Aesop; and Pinocchio’s ever growing collection of stuffed animals including Senator, cricket, Pinocchicrow and Spinocchio
