Well, first off, I was about three years old when the first book came out and about seven when the first movie came out. I grew up on the movies and I didn't have anyone in my life to tell me there was something wrong.

I will admit back then that I was pretty ignorant, not intentionally mind you, but I grew up in a middle class white christian family with pretty moderate parents. I didn't hit any road bumps in that until I started getting into things like heavier rock, explored more adult movies and books than I was allowed access to at home, and got to experience some bad shit in my life. I also came out as bi when I was 12 and got bullied out of my church for it.

I didn't really have any clue about the world until about age twelve, that's when I started to learn about what is actually going on in our world.

I didn't learn about how bad the books were until I was eighteen and at the time I was so enthralled with the fandom that I let it slide thinking that it was just a fantasy book, what people were seeing was just them putting their bs onto HP.

I didn't get it until I was twenty and then actively started talking against the antisemitism and racism in HP on my HP blogs. I was coming up with my own magic schools that fought against these issues and I thought I could take the good from HP and make it less shitty with her views and morals. I still participated within the community but distanced myself from the source material.

I was 26 when JKR started her bigotted bullshit on twitter, and that was the final straw for me. As someone who is genderfluid, all her anti trans bs hit me hard. I had realized at that point I had been making excuses for far too long just to be part of the community I had made so many friends in and enjoyed so much as a kid.

After that I sold off most of my HP books and merch, I actively avoid buying anything HP, I inform others of her bs that are still deep into HP, I shut down my HP blogs, and I cut off the rotted branch of Harry Potter and JKR that I had left. I don't even watch the movies anymore.

TLDR: I admit to being ignorant to the issues when I was growing up on it, but once I learned I started distancing myself from the source material and advocting the issues. After the trans stuff I cut it off completely.

Thinking about human behaviour compared to animal behaviour again.

It's funny to hear people (the older gens) complaining that "kids these days are lazy, they don't wanna work, etc." What do we get for busting our asses? There is no reward. Many will never own homes. Many are unemployed, trying to find work, and nobody will hire them because they don't have a million years experience and a masters degree OR they want people to work for minimum wage??? People are giving up because there is no reward. Why would we do all this for nothing?

Same as a dog that won't recall when you haven't reinforced it with a reward. Your dog isn't going to do what you tell it to if there is no incentive. No, your dog SHOULDN'T listen just because you're boss and it should respect you. That isn't how it works. They don't think that way. And honestly neither do people.

When we went hiking Sprocket wasn't always taking treats gently from me when I recalled her or she checked in and I rewarded and my one friend told me to stop giving her treats. I told him I won't work for free so why should she. And he said "I do things for free all the time because I want to do them," and I didn't say it then, but I wish I had, but if you like doing it, that's the incentive. It's a self-rewarding behaviour. Just like anything else a dog does, like chasing a squirrel or sniffing things or getting into the trash. Heeling instead of going off to sniff stuff or recalling off of something they want to chase is something you have to reinforce. You have to give them something better so they make the choice you want them to make. They won't make it just because they *respect* you. They won't willingly recall off of exciting prey out of RESPECT. You need to give them a tangible reward for that. You cannot possibly expect your dog to listen just because and then punish them for disobeying you.

Yeah, Sprocket bit my fingers a couple times. The one time pretty hard. But she was excited. She knows how to take gently and I reminded her and she tried very hard to be gentle most of the time. I wasn't going to stop rewarding her for checking in with me and recalling while we were off leash hiking in the woods. I want her to know that coming back to me is good and in the event of an emergency I would like her to not blow me off.

first of all ao3 is an archive site. this is like going to the library and saying "oh i dont like this" on every piece of media you find that you dislike and thinking they should be stamped with some sort of a marker just cause you didnt like it

you can always click back and leave. fic writers owe you nothing to explain themselves and their creations. if they have mistagged or miscategorized fics, then i understand, however there are report tools for that instead of yelling at the artist tbh

im not saying free works arent necessarily above criticism. but this is just. fucking wild. its common courtesy to just enjoy stuff (or fucking leave if you dont, the back button is free) and if the artist specifically asks for critiques, then give one - constructive that is, shitting all over someones work is not proper criticism, mind you

i just find it fucking wild people are treating art and archive sites as social media these days like this and everything needs to be policed and ~catered to the algorithm~ like. no. ao3 doesnt have an algorithm. you should be able to fucking tell what you like and what you dont like and steer away from that kind of content and let people fucking be with their art. they dont owe you anything (except trigger warnings i'd argue, but i know some people disagree with that as well for some reason), and imagine how much more energy you'd have if you only engaged with things you liked and spent time looking at instead of going to places where you dont enjoy yourself. let alone spending time telling other people you dont enjoy what they enjoy. what a fucking life
