Belated Jessica Jones rant
Ever since the show started there's been the recurring theme of Jessica doing things by the book: get proof, get criminal, send to jail.
So when Jessica encountered the first antagonist AKA Kilgrave, she tries her routine while also knowing that no normal jail can hold him, so she tries the next best alternative to that but when all fails, she ends up forced to kill him.
In season 2, Alisa is the antagonist. Again she tries her routine but when Alisa does go to jail, it's the wrong kind, she's too strong and unstable for normal prison, (despite having accepted a deal which would not send her to The Raft) and because that fails, she ends up dead too.
In season 3, Trish is the secondary antagonist, and she forces Jessica's hand to fight her. Eventually she does send her to jail, the "right" kind according to Jessica, The Raft. And it works, Jessica sacrifices her best friend, the only family she has left in order to not have her end up like the other antagonists whose stints in confinement did not work.
And I suppose it does seem like a consistent sequence of events for the series but it does not make it a fair one. Because how do you send the weakest of the antagonists to the strongest of prisons?
Is it because Trish was never arrested by the NYPD first? Because they did not have the great Jeri Hogarth who can strike deals out of thin air representing Trish? Because the evidence against Alisa Jones is much more damning than anything Trish did (literally just killed criminals).
IMO it was a cop out by writers who knew the series was ending with no future plans of a reboot, and wanted to leave with a bang. Not a bad watch at all, but sure a messed up one.

If you werenāt following the Netflix Marvel shows when they were first being released, hereās my best attempt at summarizing how the audience/fandom reacted to them:
Daredevil S1: āOMG, best Marvel show ever! I love this darker side of the MCU!ā
Jessica Jones S1: āOMG, best Marvel show ever! I love this darker side of the MCU! Marvel does female representation right!ā
Daredevil S2: āPunisher was amazing! Elektra and the Handā¦eh.ā
Luke Cage S1: (first half) āOMG, best Marvel show ever! I love this darker side of the MCU! Marvel does black representation right!ā / (second half) āThis show is corny and terrible. They did Mahershala Ali dirty.ā
Iron Fist S1: āWtf is this shit?ā
The Defenders: āThat was certainly a crossover. They did cross over. And things happened.ā
The Punisher S1: āThis is fine, but itās tone deaf for Marvel to make this show when we need gun control now.ā
Jessica Jones S2: āThe story is all over the place. Whatās even the focus here? What the heck is happening?ā
Luke Cage S2: āI guess this is better than S1 but I still hate that Mahershala Ali got killed off so soon.ā
Iron Fist S2: āBetter than S1, but thatās not saying much. Also, I welcome our new Iron Fist, Colleen Wing.ā
Daredevil S3: āThey redeemed the Netflix Marvel shows! Hallelujah!ā
The Punisher S2: āThis feels rushed. Like thereās two seasons worth of story here.ā
Jessica Jones S3: āWait, this exists? I literally saw no ads for this.ā

For some reason I've seen a lot of people disliking the way Jessica Jones season 1 ends. The vibe I've seen is that it wasn't epic enough, it was underwhelming, and that it was too simple and fast and Killgrave would be too smart to fall for it. etc etc.
I think these takes miss the point though. This is the only way he could have gone out, BECAUSE it wasn't an attempt to outsmart him at all.
The whole point is that Killgrave wasn't an epic villain, he was a weird misogynistic little control freak that was obsessed with owning Jessica because he couldn't stand that she was her own person.
The whole season is a game of cat and mouse between them, and you can see just how smart both of them are - they are both equally powerful and intelligent, BUT killgrave literally didnāt need to be doing this at all! He could have left ANY time, he didnāt have to send Hope after her, he could have left before the house, or after he escaped, or after the nightclub, literally WHENEVER
His obsession with controlling Jessica was always his downfall
She was the executioner, but in the end he brought it all on himself
He didnāt get an epic ending because itās not ABOUT him and because he didnāt need one. It was never about outsmarting or overpowering him, it was about his incessant need for control and Jessica making a decision.
And it works SO WELL not just because it makes good commentary, but also because it mirrors exactly how Killgrave tried to get her to bend to his will; both of them aimed for each otherās emotional weak point - but killgrave failed because he doesnāt actually know or understand Jessica at all, just the version of her he made up in his head and made her play act like a little doll for him
He thinks her weakness is a hero complex, because the first time they meet sheās saving Malcolm from some muggers and killgrave asks her if it felt good to beat up those men, she says yes, and when he asks why she says
āBecause I helped someoneā
And heās such an inherently selfish person that to him that translates to a hero complex - He canāt imagine a person who just wants to save people, not to bolster their self worth or to in some way help theme selves. Heās spent his entire life only doing things because he wanted to, because it brought HIM satisfaction, that the idea that someone might willingly do Anything thatās not to make them feel better doesnāt even cross his mind.
And thatās why at the house he shows her the (curated) videos of his childhood, why he ārespectsā her wishes about not hurting the nosy neighbor, why he goes and saves that family with her, and is genuinely helpful. His tactic to get her to stay with him is to show her how his powers can be used for good, show her heās also a person who can experience pain and love and joy, and then make her ārealizeā if she stays with him she could make him a hero and good person. Because he thinks she will sacrifice herself for him and for society if he presents it as a way to atone and heal her guilt.
But Jessica refuses. She betrays him and takes her own route while knowing if she had given up all her autonomy she could have made him a good person and saved countless lives. (I donāt think this was ever actually achievable but she believed it was so the point stands)
Jessica jones has a lot of problems, but a hero complex isnāt one of them.
But Jessica jones DOES know his weakness, his real weakness, her. Controlling the only person who could defy him. And yes it is an obvious and see through plan - Killgrave even calls it out! But then in order to prove sheās faking what does he do? He assaults Trish - and when she continues following his orders he FULLY believes it and completely lets down his guard.
Why? Itās such an obvious trick! Heās supposed to be clever!!!! Well it worked so well because he clearly WANTED to believe it so bad (self admittedly), he was drunk on his own power, he wanted to believe his own strength and he wanted to own Jessica again. But also because again
He thinks Jessica has a hero complex
Her allowing this to happen to her friend ? Jessica jones would never do this! He knows her so well! She just Canāt Help but Help people! If she was faking her helplessness this would have broken her out of it! (Also thereās the whole level of the jealousy he has of Trish and the love Jessica and Trish share but thatās for another post)
And so he dies, small, unable to speak, not being told heās loved, with a simple snapped neck from a cheap, unplanned ploy, that was thought up on the spot. Just as he deserved.

Hereās Why Everyone Is Talking About A Pirate Drama That Ended In 2017
Black Sails has been described as Game of Thrones with pirates
If Black Sails kicked off in 2020 instead of 2014, it certainly would have thrown fuel on the raging fire that was TikTokās sea shanty obsession. The reality is that this TV series aired on Starz from 2014 for four seasons, coming to a close in 2017. So why is everyone talking about it now, a decade after it began?
Black Sails is coming to Netflix very soon, triggering its fans to emerge from the woodwork and promote the show online. āI am SO excited for people whoāll be watching this show for the first time,ā one user wrote, with many others recommending the series to fans of Game of Thrones. With House of the Dragon still a few months away, hereās why you should tune into Black Sails this month.
New To Netflix: Black Sails
What Is Black Sails About?
Black Sails transports us back to 1715 ā aka the Golden Age of Piracy. Set in New Providence, an island in the Bahamas, we meet the feared Captain Flint (Toby Stephens) who brings a new younger crew member into the fold (āLongā John Silver, played by Luke Arnold) as his crew continues to fight for survival and negotiate their space on the island.
Is Black Sails Based On A Book?
Black Sails was written as a prequel to Robert Louis Stevensonās classic novel, Treasure IslandĀ (1883).
Is It Based On A True Story?
While Black Sails isnāt based on a true story, it does trace real events. The first season focuses on the hunt for the Spanish treasure galleon Urca de Lima, a real ship that sank in 1715 near Fort Pierce in Florida (where it still lies). Season two traces the fallout of Urca de Limaās treasure being stranded in Florida, strictly guarded by Spanish soldiers while pirates prowl the shores. The subsequent third and fourth seasons then look at the war for the control of New Providence between the pirates and the British Empire ā a la Pirates of the Caribbean.
Likewise, some of the characters are based on real people. Real pirates fictionalised in the show include:
Blackbeard (Ray Stevenson)
Anne Bonny (Clara Paget)
Benjamin Hornigold (Hakeem Kae-Kazim)
Jack Rackham (Toby Schmitz)
Charles Vane (Zach McGowan)
Ned Low (Tadhg Murphy)
Israel Hands (David Wilmot)
Meanwhile, Captain Woodes Rogers (Luke Roberts) ā who represents the British Empire in seasons three and four ā is based on a real English sea captain and slave trader, and subsequently the first Royal Governor of the Bahamas.
Was Captain Flint A Real Pirate?
Captain Flint is a fictional character who was first created by Robert Louis Stevenson in Treasure Island. He has since appeared in multiple works of fiction, including A. D. Howden Smithās Porto Bello Gold (1924), John Drakeās Flint and Silver (2008), Pieces of Eight (2009) and Skull and Bones (2010), and J. M. Barrieās Peter and Wendy (1904).
Where Was Black Sails Filmed?
Black Sails was filmed in Cape Town, South Africa, mainly inside at Cape Town Film Studio. Because the real city is so different today than it was in the 1700s, Nassau ā the capital of the Bahamas, located on New Providence island ā was built from scratch in a studio over a period of four months, as were two large water tanks to house the seriesā two ships. Some scenes were filmed outside in and around Cape Town when new terrain was required, but most of the series was filmed on set.
The Cast
The cast of Black Sails is incredibly large, but key characters to know include:
Toby Stephens as James McGraw/Captain Flint
Hannah New as Eleanor Guthrie
Luke Arnold as āLongā John Silver
Jessica Parker Kennedy as Max
Tom Hopper as William āBilly Bonesā Manderly
Zach McGowan as Charles Vane
Toby Schmitz as Jack Rackham
Clara Paget as Anne Bonny
Mark Ryan as Hal Gates
Hakeem Kae-Kazim as Mr. Scott
Sean Cameron Michael as Richard Guthrie
Louise Barnes as Miranda Hamilton/Barlow
Rupert Penry-Jones as Thomas Hamilton
Luke Roberts as Woodes Rogers
Ray Stevenson as Edward Teach
David Wilmot as Israel Hands
Harriet Walter as Marion Guthrie

only DT fans will understand me here but I LOVE that David has a distinct look when he's a villain. there's just a very specific expression that he has, the demeanour. when he's a villain. you can just SENSE it. the look in his eyes. you don't see it with his non-villain characters. if anyone else actually knows what I mean here then GOOD, I can't find any photo evidence at the moment but DT fans please tell me you know what I'm getting at here š
