so listen, if you haven't already you should download the No Thanks App. it was developed by a Palestinian for an easy way to see whether a product is on the BDS List. it's literally impossible to be up to date at all times on what products are on the boycott list, and that's not on you. it's because a lot of these huge evil mega corporations own all the smaller ones, so there's no transparency, and it's like that on purpose. how the fuck is a regular person supposed to know that the big evil Nestlé owns all these baby products, or bottled water. just like L'Oreal owns all these other cosmetic labels, so even if you know L'Oreal is evil you wouldn't necessarily know that if you buy something from fx NYX because you thought that was a nice small swedish company.
so what the No Thanks App does is that it allows you to scan the barcode of a product and it will tell you whether it's on the BDS List. you can also use the apps search feature to look up a specific brand. it takes literally two seconds to scan, and it gets updated on a regularly basis. users can send in products and brands to add to the list of boycotted brands, but from my understanding there is a requirement of proof before a brand gets added; i'm assuming proof in the form of links to reputable sources.
but the No Thanks App is so easy and quick to use, i've started using it every time i'm shopping. i fully agree that there is no ethical consumption under capitalism, but i also fully believe that we have a responsibility to do what we can. the way these big evil corporations owns literally everything there's no way to avoid them 100% and i am definitely not judging anyone for buying Nestlé baby formula or something like that, but i do think we could all choose our takeout from a small local chain instead of McDonald's, and if i'm at the store i will just simply not buy myself a cola drink because the only cola i like is Coca Cola zero and those genocidal bitches are not getting my money. there is no 100% ethical living, but there are ethical choices.

Montreux Part 2: Boat Tour with Phoebe - 1 Sept 2023
Tumblr media
My first agenda in Montreux was the Boat Tour with Phoebe! I went here first thing in the morning (about 10 AM?) after arriving in Montreux the night before. I will never stop praising the weather but especially here because it was an amazing experience to be on a boat on the lake while listening to all these stories about Freddie.
Tumblr media
We all boarded from Pontoon of the Avenue Nestlé about 500 meters from the statue and closer to the hotel I stayed in. The tour itself took about an hour - it was half an hour all the way to the Duck House and another half an hour back. We were all going quite leisurely and had enough time to take videos and pictures, especially when we reached the Duck House.
I actually had the whole trip on video and it's ~40 mins long, I edited it and everything but I had problems with the audio that I still couldn't fix to this day. As soon as I do I'll add it to the post.
So instead here's a summary (with my blurry screenshots from the video!) of the places we went past and heard some stories about.
Tumblr media
Montreux Casino / Mountain Studios, which Queen recorded in from 1977 and bought in 1978. Freddie's last vocals for "Mother Love" was recorded there around May 1991. Actually haven't got a picture of this one from the outside... can't believe that I forgot 😭 so here's a picture of the casino from Google I'm sorry! (📸 Martin Tanev)
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Freddie Mercury Statue and Duck House replica, which was put there specially for the celebration for a complete recreation of the Made in Heaven cover scene (see my previous post here!).
Tumblr media
Montreux Palace, where Freddie used to stay before renting the Duck House. He stayed in three different suites throughout, the last one is now named the Freddie Mercury suite.
Tumblr media
Le Petit Palais is right in front of it, where Queen played for Montreux Golden Rose festival.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The Duck House where Freddie often stayed in (which is actually the long building behind the iconic little house structure), named after the fact there are ducks everywhere in the house - paintings, porcelain, wood, etc. It's one story and not visible from the main road as it's hindered by the hedge. It's available for rent with the capacity for 8 people.
Tumblr media
Les Tourelles residence where Freddie bought an apartment, located on the top floor on the right hand side. Scenes from The Untold Story documentary was filmed here. Most interestingly, Freddie's things from this apartment was also auctioned in Sotheby's along with his things from Garden Lodge.
There were many anecdotes along the way about how Freddie spent his time here, some stories about Phoebe's time with him, some stories about Freddie's cats, etc. I'm determined to fix my video so hopefully I can add those in eventually. Some of them are old stories but some I'm not sure I've heard before, so it was all interesting!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Sometime in between (might have been around the Duck House where we just floated around for a bit) I was able to come up to Phoebe to introduce myself, have a quick chat, and take a selfie with him. He was very nice and approachable.
So I was glad my real first day started off with a really unique experience. The lake and the sights and the weather were perfect for the soul. And it was after I got off this boat tour when I properly went to see Freddie's statue up close. More posts of the following days soon!

Quick primer on the business side of the Barbie movie as part of Mattel films. Specifically that it's not so much a toy commercial but a brand opportunity.
Not that the film itself is wrong or bad - no doubt real creative love was poured into all the aspects of creating it - however once it got Mattel approved and blitz marketed, it's different. Even a wonderful piece of art can have its meaning changed. What you experience in the cinema and your personal relationship to your childhood toys is a separate phenomenon from Barbie and Toy Story being turned into merch and theme parks, and more importantly, trust in the Mattel or Pixar brands.
What he doesn't mention is the Mattel films have been in production (and getting investor hype) since 2013. The reason there are bits of the He Man ad is because Master of the Universe was due to be the next Mattel film to be released.
So it's important to remember that reviews of the Barbie movie and articles about it will not specify which aspect they're commenting on. We will have to sift through what has been deliberately blurred marketing and art: for many of us, watching the film will have been a 'multiple lens' viewing: it's aware it's both personal, a message about a type of womanhood, a story and a product. Many picked up on queer/ND subtext which is another lens. The racial lens was there and also not there which was another thing people picked up on.
And then there's the capitalist lenses: some people are just seeing the doll characters and tie-in doll toys/merch and saying that's a commercial; that's legit but also applies to Star Wars and Top Gun while also just scratching the surface of something much bigger.
Videos like the one above are not about whether you enjoyed the Barbie movie or whether it was good, it's about larger patterns of brand monopolies: No-one is here to tell you that the birthday cake you made is bad, just that it's disturbing that all the ingredients available to you were owned by Nestlé and Kraft-Heinz.
So the folks saying I hate the birthday cake and I loved the birthday cake can be both right so long as we figure out the lens they're using (or utterly wrong in the case of the 'ew girly' idiots and hardcore Barbie stans LOL). I will be reblogging* both love and vitriol because there are layers to the film, to the hobby and to people.
*I'm waiting for it to hit pirate streaming in decent quality for all the folks who can't do 2 hours of bright lights, loud noises, crowded room.

Did you know that although Japanese Kit Kats, most widely known for their unique flavors,  didn’t actually come from Japan – but instead originated from England?
Almost 70 years after they were first made in the UK, Japan released the very first non-chocolate flavored Kit Kat and things were never the same again. Now, there’s officially over 400 Kit Kat flavors — giving lovers of the famous Japanese candy an abundance of options to choose from.
Tumblr media
The Origins of Japanese Kit Kats
From its origins tracing back to the 1930s at a Northern England chocolate company, Kit Kat bars have gone through quite the journey to become a distinct part of modern Japan.
The history of Japanese Kit Kats began in 1973 when they were first imported here by the original manufacturer, Rowntree’s. Around a decade later, the Swiss food and drink company, Nestlé, took over the product, and during the early 2000s, their Japanese division started experimenting with all sorts of flavors.
The very first Kit Kat flavor that was developed specifically in Japan was strawberry. They were initially sold in Hokkaido and ended up becoming a big hit. Because of their popularity, the Japanese Kit Kat team conducted a market test, and found out that they were popular not only with locals, but with visiting domestic and foreign tourists as well.
Experience all of the the unique flavors Japanese Kit Kats have to offer with TokyoTreat’s Japanese snack box!
After this discovery, they had the idea of strategically targeting a common Japanese tradition: the gift-giving custom of omiyage. An omiyage is essentially a small gift or souvenir that you give to family, friends or coworkers after you’ve gone on a trip. Traditionally, omiyages are chosen to be representative of the place or country you visited.
This led to them releasing unique flavors to appeal to other parts of Japan, and by doing so, Nestlé didn’t just make Kit Kats a staple of Japanese souvenirs, but they also helped foster a hometown connection between the snacks and Japanese people. Some examples of these regional Kitkat flavors include the Ocean Salt Kitkat, which uses sea salt from the Seto Inland Sea in southwestern Japan, the Uji matcha flavor inspired by a special type of tea that grows in Kyoto, and the purple sweet potato flavor representing the island of Kyushu.
The Evolution of Japanese Kit Kats
As they grew in popularity, Kit Kats also adopted more luxurious style, and incorporated their brand into the everyday aspects of Japanese people’s lives.
Back in 2003, Nestlé hired pastry chef Yasumasa Takagi to collaborate with them to develop a series of gourmet flavors. With each new flavor, Chef Takagi and other collaborators always conduct a taste test.
The taste test can last from a few weeks to more than a year, depending on when they feel like they’ve perfected the taste and texture. In fact, it wasn’t until 2005 — two years after he was hired by Nestlé Japan — that Takagi came up with his first contribution, the Passion Fruit Kit Kat.
Since then, Takagi has added more flavors to the line-up, many of which are exclusive to the Kit Kat Chocolatory — the “luxurious” side of Japanese Kit Kats. The Chocolatory is a series of specialty stores all across Japan that offer more high-end ways of consuming the snack. You can buy limited edition Kit Kat flavors and enjoy luscious cakes and desserts, all of which, of course, features a type of Kit Kat bar.
For further proof of how Kit Kats have become more than just a snack in Japan, one only needs to look at entrance exams, arguably one of the biggest turning points in a Japanese student’s life. Because of how Kit Kat is pronounced in Japanese (“kitto katto”) and its similarity in sound to the phrase for “You’ll surely win” (“kitto katsu”), students in Japan often bring a Kit Kat bar with them to serve as a good luck charm for the exams. Conveniently enough, it can also double as a quick snack in between answering the tests.
When they were first introduced to the country in the 1970s, it’s safe to say that nobody back then anticipated what a big role Kit Kats would eventually play in Japanese people’s lives: from giving tasty souvenirs to loved ones, to becoming a fine dining experience and even becoming symbolic of wishes for good luck to a test-taking Japanese student.
And so, despite not originally coming up with the now-famous chocolate wafer bars, Japan turned the seemingly simple Kit Kat and transformed it into a snack that’s full of depth and endless flavor possibilities.

Speaking of chubby bunnies there's one piece of mascot history that is interesting - though I don't know how well known it is outside of France... But you know the Nesquik mascot, the bunny? Quicky's the name. Well in France, before Quicky exists, the Nestlé mascot of Nesquik was "Groquik" (gros meaning "big" or "fat"). Created in 1978 it was a big, fat, happy yellow hippo - he also existed in Greece as "Kuikaras". But in the 90s Groquik offically "took holidays" and was completely removed, replaced by Quicky. And that was because the advertisers had realized that having such a big and fat character as a mascot could mean "If you eat our products, you will be getting fat". And since at the time child obesity became a hot topic, they decided to change the mascot into one fitting more modern days - a thin, active, dancing, skateboarding, sport-loving rabbit (hence the "quick" in the name). I mean Quicky existed before Groquick, but he was the American mascot, and wasn't brought in France until Groquick's "eviction"
All of that to say - there's something to dig in there, about Quicky and weight gain and chubby bunnies... Maybe even someone trying to turn a fit jock bunny into a hippo-sized chub-bun as a just return of things...
That was your history trivia of the day Xp
Heh! That's funny. Though I must say I'd prefer a cute bunny over a hippo but that's just me. XD
I can't remember if the bunny had an official name in the US other than just being referred to as the "Quik Bunny" or the "Quik Rabbit". I don't recall him every being called "Quicky" or anything like that, but I could be wrong. I am old and my memory often fails me, haha.
I was born in 1978 so the product/mascot I grew up with was Quik, I don't think they changed over to Nesquik in the US until sometime in the late 90's or something. I loved Strawberry Quik when I was a kid, my mom would get me a little carton whenever we went grocery shopping. Is the Strawberry Quik bunny supposed to be the same guy or is he like... Chocolate Quik Bunny's cousin or some shit?

Time for a Quick Cats Water Review.
I've heard nothing but good things about Waiakea water.
Tumblr media
And for good reason!
I've never had a water that literally tastes like nothing, and so refreshing.
Tumblr media
Now I'll never be able to drink regular water again!
I looked it up and it doesn't appear that there is a supply issue, like how Nestlé steals from locals.

ORIGINAL TOLL HOUSE CHOCOLATE CHIP COOKIES (1938)
Since I won't be home for the holidays this Christmas (we are going to Australia to spend a summery Christmas with my in-laws), I went home to Canada a little early for a quick trip - most importantly to meet my new, adorable niece! Surrounded by childhood favourites and nostalgia, I thought it would be a great idea to make a classic Tasting History treat with my mom: the Original Toll House Chocolate Chip Cookies. This first ever chocolate chip cookie recipe, originally called Chocolate Crunch Cookies (a later newspaper typo created its now-common name), was created by Ruth Wakefield and her head pastry chef Sue Brides at The Toll House Inn in Whittman, MA in 1938. The restaurant was already quite popular among locals and food critics, and Ruth finally decided to share the recipe for these star cookies with the public. It was printed in newspapers, and the popularity of the chocolate chip cookie grew even further when Nestlé printed it on the back of their packaging. In the original recipe, Nestlé's chocolate is mentioned by name, and the growing popularity of the cookie recipe led to a 500% increase in profits for the company. Their chocolate bars originally had to be chopped up into 'pea-sized' pieces by hand until Nestlé began selling scored bars with the correct size, and eventually chocolate chips - created especially for making chocolate chip cookies. Interestingly enough, the original chocolate chip cookie recipe is very close to the one that is still on packages today. I have very fond memories of making chocolate chip cookies with my mother as I was growing up, and I thought, what better way to compare the two recipes than to also make this original chocolate chip cookie recipe with her! See Max’s video on how to make this dish here or see the ingredients and process at the end of this post, sourced from his website.
My experience making it:
Finally in my natural element in Canada, with easier to find ingredients that I recognized and could more predictably bake with, I was able to follow the recipe exactly. The one major change I made was to omit the chopped nuts completely, mostly because I'm not a fan of nuts in baked goods.
Because this recipe requires an overnight element, my mom and I began preparing the cookie dough the day before we wanted to bake and eat them. My mom began by beating the eggs, then creaming the butter with a hand mixer while I portioned out the other ingredients. She added in the sugars, eggs, baking soda dissolved in water, and vanilla and mixed them until combined. I then slowly sprinkled in the flour and salt mixture into the mixing bowl while she mixed, until that, too, was combined. I was worried the dough was looking a little too dry and dense, but my mom assured me it still looked right - I totally trust her baking instincts! We then folded the chocolate chips into the dough with a spatula, then covered it with Saran wrap and let it sit in the fridge overnight. The next evening, we preheated the oven, took our dough out (which had really hardened up!), and began portioning it out into little balls of dough. My mom had to use a fork and a bit of force to portion it, since it was so cold and solid! We used a weigh scale to determine the 14 oz. size of ball, but honestly, we did end up going up to 20 oz. or so at some points - it would have taken a long time to weigh every ball. On a lined baking sheet, we fit about 14 balls of dough, spaced about 2 inches apart. After pressing down on each just a little bit, we tossed the first batch in the oven. It smelled so good, and the bits of raw cookie dough I snuck while waiting for the cookies to bake were heavenly! When we took them out, we transferred them onto cooling racks. I think we baked about 5 trays of cookies overall, leaving us with an absolute plethora of chocolate chip cookies by the end! They looked small, but classic - almost like the chocolate chip cookies you can buy in a store. Very photogenic, in my opinion.
My experience tasting it:
Of course, our patience got the best of us, and we did not wait for the cookies to cool before trying them. No regrets! They tasted wonderful - crisp on the bottom and edges, but soft and a little melty in the middle. Really ideal, this kind of cookie could please everyone. My mom likes her cookies on the crispier side, and I like mine on the soft and gooey side, yet we both were very happy with how this recipe turned out. So was my dad, sister, my brother-in-law, and my aunt! In fact, these cookies didn't taste much different from my mom's chocolate chip cookie recipe (as I remembered it). She claims she also got her recipe from a newspaper, so it may have also had the same origin as this one. The flavour of these cookies was sweet, but balanced by the salt and rich brown sugar. They were so tasty, I think this could even become my main chocolate chip cookie recipe, although I will probably make each cookie even bigger in order to get a large volume of soft gooeyness. And I will definitely halve the recipe! 100 cookies or so, as tasty as they are, is an awful lot to get through and would definitely become noticeable on the waist. Otherwise, I agree with Max that there is a reason this recipe has lasted so many decades in its nearly-original form - it really is a crowd-pleaser. I was happy I was able to take some cookies with me back to Germany so I can share some with my husband! If you end up making this dish, if you liked it, or if you changed anything from the original recipe, do let me know!
Original Toll House Chocolate Chip Cookies original recipe (1938)
Sourced from Ruth Wakefield’s Toll House Tried and True Recipes by Ruth Wakefield (1938).
Toll House Chocolate Crunch Cookies Cream 1 cup butter, add 3/4 cup brown sugar, 3/4 cup granulated sugar, and 2 eggs beaten whole. Dissolve 1 tsp soda in 1 tsp hot water, and mix alternately with 2 1/4 cups flour sifted with 1 tsp salt. Lastly add 1 cup chopped nuts and 2 bars (7 oz.) Nestle’s yellow label chocolate, semi-sweet, which has been cut in pieces the size of a pea. Flavor with 1 tsp. vanilla and drop half teaspoons on a greased cookie sheet. Bake 10 to 12 minutes in 375° oven. Makes 100 cookies.
Modern Recipe
Based on the recipe from Ruth Wakefield’s Toll House Tried and True Recipes by Ruth Wakefield (1938) and Max Miller’s version in his Tasting History video.
Ingredients:
1 cup butter
3/4 cup brown sugar
3/4 cup granulated sugar
2 beaten eggs
1 tsp baking soda, dissolved in 1 tsp hot water
1 tsp vanilla
2 1/4 cups flour
1 tsp salt
1 cup chopped nuts
14 oz. chocolate chips
Method:
Cream the butter until smooth. Mix in the brown sugar, granulated sugar, eggs, baking soda water, and vanilla until combined.
Whisk together the flour and salt. Add this to the butter mixture and mix until just combined.
Stir in the nuts and chocolate chips just until evenly distributed.
Cover and chill the dough overnight.
Preheat the oven to 375°F (190° C).
Scoop dough into balls, about 14 grams each. A half a teaspoon is way too small of a measurement, so I found weighing the dough to be the best way. Place them on lined baking sheets, leaving about 2 inches between each cookie. Press the cookie dough down a bit.
Bake for about 8 minutes, or until golden brown.
Take them out of the oven and let them cool on the baking sheet for 5 minutes, then transfer to a wire rack to cool completely.
Serve them forth!

Understanding Nescafé
Nescafé is a brand of instant coffee made by Nestlé. It was introduced in 1938 and quickly became popular. The brand offers a range of coffee products, including instant coffee, ground coffee, and coffee blends. The convenience of instant coffee makes it a favorite among busy individuals. With just hot water, you can enjoy a delicious cup of coffee in seconds.
The Origins of Nescafé
The story of Nescafé began in Switzerland. The goal was to create a coffee that could last longer and be easily prepared. The result was a freeze-dried coffee that preserved the flavor and aroma. Today, Nescafé is available in many countries and comes in various forms. This global presence is a testament to its popularity and versatility.
Types of Nescafé Products
Nescafé offers several types of coffee products. Each type has its own unique flavor and brewing method. Here, we will break down the main categories of Nescafé products:
1. Nescafé Classic
Nescafé Classic is the original instant coffee. It is made from high-quality Robusta beans. The flavor is rich and full-bodied. Many people enjoy its strong taste, making it an excellent choice for those who prefer a bold coffee experience. Nescafé Classic is perfect for those who want a quick cup without compromising on taste.
2. Nescafé Gold
Nescafé Gold is a premium instant coffee blend. It is made from Arabica beans, known for their smoother and more refined flavor. Nescafé Gold is ideal for those who appreciate a milder taste. It is often described as having a rich aroma and a silky finish. This coffee is great for special occasions or when you want to treat yourself to something a little more luxurious.

The result is a coffee that is easy to drink and pleasing to the palate. Nescafé Taster’s Choice is a good choice for those who enjoy a balanced cup without any bitterness.
4. Nescafé Decaf

Coffee Extract Market: In-Depth Research on Predictions and Competitive Landscape
The coffee extract market is poised for significant growth as demand for convenient, high-quality coffee products continues to rise globally. Coffee extract, a concentrated form of coffee made by extracting flavors and compounds from coffee beans, is increasingly sought after in the food, beverage, and cosmetics industries. This market's expansion can be attributed to the growing consumer preference for ready-to-drink coffee beverages, the popularity of health-conscious alternatives, and the surge in demand for natural ingredients in beauty products.
Tumblr media
Key Drivers of Market Growth
Several factors are contributing to the growth of the coffee extract market. One of the primary drivers is the growing demand for coffee-based beverages, which has fueled the need for coffee extracts in ready-to-drink (RTD) coffees, iced coffee, and coffee-flavored syrups. As consumers seek more convenient, quick, and flavorful alternatives to traditional coffee brewing, the versatility of coffee extracts makes them an attractive choice for manufacturers in the beverage industry.
In addition, the rising health consciousness among consumers has contributed to the market's expansion. Coffee extracts, rich in antioxidants, caffeine, and other bioactive compounds, offer potential health benefits, such as improved metabolism and enhanced cognitive function. This has spurred the use of coffee extracts in dietary supplements, functional beverages, and wellness products.
Moreover, the increasing demand for natural ingredients in food and cosmetics has also boosted the market for coffee extracts. These extracts are considered clean-label products, meaning they are perceived as healthier and free from artificial additives, making them highly attractive to consumers who prioritize natural ingredients in their food and skincare routines.
Market Segmentation and Trends
The coffee extract market can be segmented by type, application, and region. By type, the market is typically divided into liquid extracts, powder extracts, and others. Liquid extracts are the most popular due to their ease of use in beverage applications. On the other hand, powder extracts are gaining traction in the food and beverage industries for use in dry formulations, including instant coffees and snack foods.
In terms of application, coffee extracts are widely used in the beverage industry, including ready-to-drink coffees, specialty coffee beverages, and flavored syrups. Additionally, coffee extracts are becoming an important ingredient in the food industry, particularly in confectionery, bakery products, and savory dishes. The cosmetics industry is also tapping into the benefits of coffee extracts, using them in skincare products for their antioxidant properties.
Geographically, the coffee extract market is witnessing strong growth across North America, Europe, and Asia Pacific. North America and Europe remain dominant due to the established coffee culture and increasing consumer demand for premium coffee products. Meanwhile, Asia Pacific is expected to exhibit the highest growth rate, driven by rising disposable incomes, a growing preference for Western-style coffee, and an expanding middle class in countries like China and India.
Competitive Landscape
The competitive landscape of the coffee extract market is highly fragmented, with numerous players competing for market share. Key companies in the market include Nestlé S.A., The Kraft Heinz Company, Cargill, Inc., and Tata Coffee Limited, among others. These companies are focusing on product innovation, partnerships, and acquisitions to expand their portfolios and strengthen their market position.
For example, Nestlé has introduced a variety of coffee extract-based products, such as its Nescafé range, which has helped the company solidify its position in the global market. Additionally, companies are increasingly investing in sustainable sourcing practices to meet the growing consumer demand for ethically sourced coffee, which is becoming a key factor in the purchasing decisions of environmentally conscious consumers.
Future Outlook
The future of the coffee extract market looks promising, with continued innovations in product offerings and increasing consumer demand for convenience and health-conscious options. As coffee consumption continues to rise worldwide, especially in emerging markets, the market for coffee extracts is expected to expand significantly. Moreover, advancements in extraction technologies and a shift toward sustainable production methods will likely enhance the market's growth prospects, making it an attractive area for investment in the coming years.
In conclusion, the coffee extract market is on a growth trajectory, driven by evolving consumer preferences for convenient, healthy, and natural coffee-based products. As demand for premium coffee and functional ingredients rises, the competitive landscape is expected to become even more dynamic, with leading companies focusing on innovation and sustainability to maintain a competitive edge.
