Aaaaaaaa hell yeah!

I don't have any blorbos but I do have opinions!

So, one thing I really like and one thing i don't.

Nephis. She's perfect, amazing, wonderful and beautifully complex. I've seen the powerful but expressionless girl trope time and time again but I've never seen it written like her.

I love that her expressionlessness and social awkwardness actually has a mechanic behind it. It's her and it's also part of her power. The more she uses it the more she burns her humanity away and becomes more and more empty. It tracks with her past, her inner self, her feelings and with the relationships she makes.

It shows the best in the scene at the end of the forgotten shore arc where Sunny is trying to get her to go through the gate and she replies that she can't. Because if she does everything will start again. The only times Neph creates connections with people who aren't her cohort, is when she's inspiring them to fight and die for her. That's also the basis of her power, she lights people's hearts, she inspires people, she's the herald of ruin. She grows more powerful to destroy the Spell. But there is cost. In lives and in her humanity.

And you know what, she was right. It really did start again when she made it back and that's so tragic.

Now! Something i don't like!

The whole beauty thing. I have nothing against everyone in a novel being thought of as attractive in some way. But i just wish there was more thought behind that. Like the idea that everyone who becomes an awakened gets more attractive with the more powerful they get could be interesting if it was explored a little. Like if everyone becomes attractive then the definition of attractiveness would change. We like diversity, we like something that stands out. Also why? How? Bc their heading towards divinity? What does that have to do with beauty? Angels are abominations. It just kinda rubs me the wrong way a little.

But I fucking love the jokes. Effie, sweet Effie, I can't wait for her to find out that she called Sunny attractive and that she wanted to jump him. I can't wait for him to laugh her out of the building. Also Sunny being constantly called a spooky, beautiful Victorian doll is wonderful.

There are two ships in shadow slave that I will always dislike that they aren't cannon, and especially annoying that they arent that popular

The first is cassie and neph, they are just brilliang together, and they've both traumatized sunny so much

The second is sunny and kai. I could wax poetry about how they are perfect for each other, and then you have the way they mirror each other in personality, and negatively and also their flaws. They are practically made for each other, it is a crime that they arent more popular
