My favorite Goth sub-sub-cultures and genres
Goth has evolved a lot from the fans of genre specific music of the 70s to 1990s. It still has its roots in the music and heavily with a particular aesthetic.
I'm an old school but not quite "elder Goth" yet (I'm forty-two). And I'm a cross between Neo-Victorian Goth and Halloweeen Aesthetic Goth. I'll explain both of those as best I can.
A Neo-Victorian is a Goth who likes Nostalgia, particularly things that resemble the look and feel of late nineteenth century England and New England (North East US). Many Neo Victorian Goths wear nineteenth century fashion. I, myself, love nineteenth century style Goth attire but I prefer male Neo Victorian Fashion to womanly. Neo Victorians also tend to love antiques and antique reproductions. One of the earliest examples of a Neo Victorian Goth look can be found in Goths of 1992 trying to emulate Gary Oldman's Dracula in London look. For music most Neo Victorians tend to favor people like Aurelio Voltaire, certain scores by Danny Elfman, Gothic music that incorporates old fashioned instruments and especially the use of Violins, piano, and sometimes even a theremin. The music is more Gothic than Goth though there is Goth that fits the aesthetic. There's a romanticism to it. And a lack of cynicism that can be found in some other branches of Goth. ___________________________ Halloween Aesthetic Goth Halloween Aesthetic Goth is a more playful side of Goth culture that embraces a self-aware cheesiness while also unashamedly loving all the tropes and cliches we associate with the holiday. It a respectful love of things other people tend to only enjoy seasonally. These are the sort of Goths who leave Halloween related items out all year or collect Halloween related things and do home decoration shopping during the Halloween season and in Halloween stores or Halloween sections of stores.
The music connected with this branch of Goth also entails artists like Aurelio Voltaire but also delves into the Goth adjacent. Pretty much anything that plays on Halloween radio dot net. Novelty songs and any music about Gothic topics or set a Gothic mood. This can entail Halloween party music that you wouldn't associate with Goth culture though Bauhaus could fit in here too but also things as old (or older) than Bobby "Boris" Pickett's Monster Mash, and as recent as Creepy Crawlies by Scary Bitches.

#I was a die hard fan since early 2006 and those claims always made me roll my eyes#I was also into other broader music and NO ONE knew who she was that was part of the charm and excitement#it felt like a special sublevel of the world just for us weirdos#I think too that lots of people myself included were disappointed at her lack of broader impact even as people like AP found wider success#like I’ve been sad that the weird goth scenes I was in in the late 00s and early 10s have no real staying power#and other neo-Victorian/19th century stuff like Gemma Doyle and Rasputina#but I’ve been autopsying my ex-Plague Rat status and that’s why this stood out to me#the dramatic dark makeup is also very 90s high fashion which is where the inspiration is from probably on Zendaya’s side#but anyway yeah as I said in an earlier post someday I will really be able to hammer out what this woman’s art meant to me#until then we get ‘not a copy! cool tho’

Everyone talks about turning 30 and becoming an “old hag” and a “spinster” (derogatory) but what about being an old hag and a spinster in the cool mysterious witchy independent goth babe way, huh, what about that?
Be the freaky spinster that everyone talks about because she lives all alone at the edge of town with her cats and haunts the forests at night in her sweeping black gown and cloak and grows poisonous herbs in her garden bc she’s probably a witch and is also probably in a Boston marriage with the quirky “old maid” librarian
Like, that’s kind of hot and aspirational!
I for one can’t wait to become an old hag and terrify the menfolk with my unmaidenly ways.
Also please excuse me while I go write a Neo-Victorian gothic novel about lesbian spinsters ✌️

this post is just me going on a long tangent for an aesthetic im nostalgic for and a bunch of examples of it so click keep reading at your own discretion cause long post ahead
so what im talking is this sort of mid 2000s to like around 2011 neo-victorian aesthetic that also utilized a sort of gothic-circus meets cabaret style. the essence of the 2000s is there even if its not initially visible from the surface because its important to this aesthetic. i think some motifs for this are typical gothic elements like graves and crosses but also things like stripes, butterflies, ragdolls, playing cards, checker patterns, hearts (both whole and broken), chess, circus imagery, roses and rabbits. aesthetics like emo, gothic lolita, circus, goth, mall goth and even steampunk to a small degree are kinda like the cousins to this.
some artists that i think visualized this are mizna wada,

plus a whole bunch of others like hanamushi and dollcreep
i'd say the music genres associated with this style would be dark cabaret and baroque pop. the most popular examples would probably be panic! at the disco's first and third albums
![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/c39e6a5a9be09aa9fcc63fb199977e6c/b64c31622dee418b-66/s400x600/fc209f1282007fe2da9f1d6e37623e28ca8dd59c.jpg)

and there were quite a few vocaloid song/mvs that also fit like dark wood circus, trick and treat and the riddle solver who can't solve riddles. plus i feel like a large amount of songs by kikou also match this sort of vibe
![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/2c647f1e7f0bf44d6832d01e07d81a0b/b64c31622dee418b-c0/s500x750/7bce5d58a25f8c81e9de4fad86f1c31d1d66a4aa.jpg)

clothing wise i feel like thick stripes were really popular, especially as striped stockings. other things like victorian boots, fingerless gloves and corsets as well. i cant name just one specific clothing style but i def feel like gothic lolita and the neo victorian look really embodies this.
![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/1bdcae3a0670c64004ebac02e5f74862/b64c31622dee418b-be/s500x750/36685092db368c4c6b957602253044a98fc3b73a.jpg)

video games also were kinda influenced by this aesthetic but i dont think it was nearly as prominent. i think the path and alice: madness returns are probably the closest to what im talking abt
![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/dc1283a0c7febef8c45dd6589528b0b7/b64c31622dee418b-2b/s250x250_c1/f4a488ed3bc30d6a34de16ad7120008d03b1bd86.jpg)

but interestly enough i think the kind of games that utilized this style the most were flash point and click games like gretel & hansel
![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/2e73c68350b69a87b0048ac3d5d1812f/b64c31622dee418b-de/s400x600/699bcb71087dbb1a9737aa5c7b58a2e9a8ddfc37.jpg)
and speaking of alice: madness returns it really does seem alice in wonderland and alice in wonderland inspired themes with a darker more gothic-y look became really popular (which think i also plays into the popularity of the neo victorian influence). this is why i think things associated with alice in wonderland like roses, rabbits and playing cards became such popular imagery with this aesthetic. i find it kinda funny when people say the 2010 version of alice in wonderland wasnt good because the color palette was "too dark/gloomy/whatever" cause it really was appealing to the aesthetics of the time which is why it did so well when it came out
![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/5782f3466f1771683912e0a1d0495871/b64c31622dee418b-be/s540x810/a9a625cf772d546655af78ff4ae7f8ac38a33a96.jpg)

for movies of this aesthetic i know tim burton is probably gonna be the most associated with this which is fair but i credit a lot of it to the costume designer for most of his movies, colleen atwood (who fittingly designed the costumes for 2010 alice in wonderland)
![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/73f2ee5c607b3d7113485a3ec31e9700/b64c31622dee418b-48/s640x960/f8f5040177d207eb3abab723bc51bc4740dd6cb2.jpg)

ngl i'm super intrigued by Angel (her pinterest board is so so cute!!! i love her style omg)!! could we have some info about her? like how she acts, what type of yandere she is, etc?? thank you!!
WAIT IM SO FLATTERED 😭
Y’all look at my Pinterest~? *twirling hair*
Haha anyways… I am really excited to delve more into the Doll yans, and I also wanted to give them somewhat unique styles while still having those “fancy collector doll” vibes. Angel is more inspired by Victorian and Neo-Victorian dress, Rose from ballet/music boxes/rococo, Mina from yamikawaii/menhera, Fang from romantic/vampire goth, etc 🥰
Angel is always very prim and proper, preoccupied with “cleanliness” both physical and spiritual, and puts upon herself the Sisyphean task of instilling those same ideals into her Darling and fellow dolls.
Angel is a very protective yandere— I could see her breaking somebody’s wrist for daring to touch you, but then she spends the rest of the day enveloped in guilt and praying for forgiveness for it.
Most of all, she prays and works towards the safety of her Darling, their “purity,” comfort, and happiness. She has no concept of personal space or alone time, and if you try to ask for it, she merely stands in the corner of your room to continue her watch over you and becomes incredibly confused if you object to this.
She is constantly fighting off her deeper feelings of affection and desire for you. Sometimes she considers her constant vigil over you to be a test of her strength. What she wouldn’t do to kiss you, to hold you closer— but she mustn’t. That isn’t proper, after all. Other times she doubts herself, wondering if her watch over you is, in itself, a sinful indulgence after all…

For the previous Anon: I tend to like keeping premades close to their original vibes, and Cassandra's is Neo-Victorian Goth, kinda similar to Wednesday Addams. I give her mid-low bunches for everyday, athletic, swimming and outdoor, generally the 3to2 Midnight Hollow Steampunk Pigtails (no flowers). For formal, I give her an updo or bun, something like the 3to2 Sophisticated Updo, the 4to2 Jujujam La Traviata, or Helga 87 which have a Victoriana flair. For underwear and pyjamas, I go got loose, clavicle-length and thick, for example Helga 76 or Newsea Shaine.
Thank you for the suggestions, nonnies! ❤

Unexpected Goth music
In the 90s you had the curious dilemma of both trying to avoid the title of Goth and also being accepted in the perceived Goth community. And there was an unfortunately high number of gatekeepers. You'd get asked what your favorite Goth artist or song was and for whatever reason "That doesn't count." or "That's actually Punk." or 'That's Death Rock, not Goth." or "That's too mainstream, that's not REAL Goth." And it got very irritating. So I'm going to list some of the things I think fit under the Goth genre that many would either not consider at all or would think "don't count." Disclaimer: This list does not contain obvious bands like The Cure, Siouxsie and the banshees, or Bauhaus. Once you remove those you'd be surprised how limited the selection of "real" Goth starts to feel. ______________________ And now here are the things that have (in my own experience) been classified as not Goth despite really fitting the criteria. Aurelio Voltaire - Sometimes considered Goth folk or "Dark Cabaret" or even "Death Rock" (1988 version of The Night) Aurelio Voltaire pretty much personifies Goth music. From his Gothic Neo Victorian / pirate look to such songs as Raised by Bats, Land of the Dead, Vampire Club, and the Neil Gaiman's The Sandman inspired "Come Sweet Death." Aurelio Voltaire is so Goth that I can't help but think there are other reasons people may not want to count him such as unconscious racism. (He's Cuban and has released Spanish language tracks.) Danny Elfman - Perhaps today most well known for his movie scores, particularly the iconically Gothic Nightmare before Christmas (where he was multiple voices including Jack's singing voice), Danny Elfman used to be the front man for the band Oingo Boingo where he had such songs as Dead Man's Party, Flesh 'n blood, Weird Science, No one lives forever, and No Spill Blood. These are arguably Gothic themed but not Gothic "style." However I do feel there is some Goth leanings in his 2020 album Big Mess which was officially released as the genre Industrial Goth. The Hex Girls - This band was invented for the 1999 Scooby Doo animated movie, Scooby Doo and the Witch's Ghost. Representing Gothic fashion, Wiccan spiritual beliefs, and environmentalism the band was meant to be a Gothic inversion on The Spice Girls. Defined as "Eco Goth" though arguably pop their songs actually were really good including "Earth, Wind, Fire, and Air" (though admittedy it should be Earth, Water, Fire, and Air), The Witch's Ghost, and Hex Girl. Inkubus Sukkubus - Considered Pagan Rock, they are definitely Goth, including the songs Sweet Morpheus and Vampire Queen (and several other vampire themed songs!) Blackmore's night - Neo Medieval folk rock band. You know... I think once you get called "Neo Medieval" you get a free pass to call yourself Goth. That's just my opinion. Including the songs Locked Within the Crystal Ball, The Darkness, and Shadow of the Moon.
Within Temptation - Symphonic Metal / Gothic Metal. One question... have you listened to them? Just listen to Angel, Stand my Ground, The Fear, or A Demon's Fate. Eden's Bridge - Progressive Celtic Folk Rock. They have two songs dedicated to Oscar Wilde's The Canterville Ghost. I know one song isn't enough but still... Sonata Arctica - Metal but some of their biggest hits are about magic and more commonly werewolves. Cain's offering - Again, Metal, but the subject matter is decidedly Gothic. Kamelot - Power metal but they have two albums that retell Goethe's Faust parts 1 and 2 (Epica and The black Halo). In fact pretty much everything they do is of Gothic inclination. Richard Campbell - Metal but he did an entire metal opera retelling the novel Frankenstein. I think that's pretty Goth if you ask me.
Smashing Pumpkins - Considered Alternative rock. There was time where just about anything vampire related was advertised with Bullet with Butterfly Wings. And the band is named after a popular Halloween prank. The lead singer is also a professional poet.
Alice Cooper - Welcome to my Nightmare, Keepin' Halloween Alive, The Ballad of Dwight Frye (actor from classic universal monster movies), Gimme, Black Widow (With Vincent Price). He also performed in Tim Burton's Dark Shadows.
Marilyn Manson - Once Classified as industrial Goth, he was denounced by many Goths as "too mainstream" or "Not Goth enough." The man did covers of Danny Elfman's This is Halloween, David Bowie's Golden Years, Annie Lennox's Sweet Dreams, and Lost Boys' Cry Little Sister. That's pretty Goth if you ask me. My Chemical Romance (MCR) - Do I really need to elaborate wit this one? David Bowie - Mostly considered Glam Rock, Bowie has dabbled in all genres and Heart's Filthy Lesson was definitely industrial. Aurelio Voltaire did a Goth sequel to the songs Bowie wrote for Labyrinth. And Bowie's Scary Monsters and Super Creeps inspired Danny Elfman. You can't get more Goth than that (In my opinion). Even Bowie's album Hours drifts into Emo territory. Prince - At the very least he had a Goth aesthetic. I think if he wasn't black people would be quicker to realize he could fit as Goth. There's a lot of unconscious racism among some (not all) Goths. Michael Jackson - One word. Thriller. He also had The Boogeyman's Gonna Get ya with The Jackson Five, and later Ghost. But once you get Vincent Price to rap you should automatically count. The Rasmus - Rock but most of their songs are decidedly Goth and probably should count such as In the Shadows, Ghost of love, and Lucifer's Angel. Sarah McLachlan - Though considered pop let's be honest. Every Goth and person in the 90s "vampire Scene" had her Surfacing album or at least heard Building a Mystery. Before her music started playing in ASPCA commercials you heard songs like Adia on Buffy The Vampire Slayer. Savage Garden - Though definitely pop they get an honorary mention for having songs inspired by Anne Rice and for naming themselves after a phrase invented by The vampire Lestat to describe the nature of the world in The Vampire Lestat novel by Anne Rice. Sting - Though not always Goth, Sting was in the Gothic horror movie The Bride and wrote a song from the perspective of Louis in Interview with the vampire called Moon over Bourbon Street. Stevie Nicks - She got an American Horror story: Coven tie-in music video and practices witchcraft. That's like hitting a Goth bullseye. Johnny Cash - Wore all black all the time and did a cover of a NIN song that is considered better than the original version, Hurt. Sir Elton John - Glam / Pop rock but he gets an honorary mention for composing the Lestat Broadway musical and having a full demo album that was never officially released and can only be found through dubious / underground sources. (Or Ebay if you were lucky in 2006...) Honorable mention to Bobby "Boris" Pickett for having the first Gothic themed song to get banned in the UK (Monster Mash) for being "Too morbid." You can't get much more Goth than that.

I am going to add my own thoughts although some are touched upon wonderfully already I wanted to further emphasize on great points:
It is not a rule to listen to only Goth music even if that’s where the subculture comes from. You can listen to any music you want as long as you respect the origins of the subculture you’re connected to.
There’s many kinds of Goth music (ie. Pop, Dark Wave, Folk, Southern, Rock, Metal and even Neo-Classical). If you do not like one type of Gothic Music that is fine as there is variety! You will likely find what resonates with you most.
Being Goth and Emo is two different things although you can identify as both if you wish to. Goth spawned from Post-Punk and Emo comes from Post Hardcore Rock. They’re both linked to Punk, but they do so in their own ways. They’re not synonymous and shouldn’t be used as replacement terms for one another.
Goth does not mean you have to wear all black all of the time. There are people who wear all black and do not identify as Goth or have a Goth mindset at all. They just really like black.
Being Goth does not mean having a specific ideal personality connected to being glum or moody. There are Goths who are bubbly and energetic and they’re no less Goth.
Goth is not a specific age, sex, ethnicity, race, gender identity or orientation. Your personal origins do not matter.
You don’t have to be born or growing up in the 70’s/80’s to be valid as a Goth.
Being Goth does not mean you have to be into concepts of “evil” whether that is literally or symbolically and there’s nothing wrong with Goths who choose that as long as they’re not hurting anyone with it, and even when you do run into such a person you should understand it’s the personality of that individual and not an entire group of people. That mindset is not universal.
There are many types of Goth: Traditional, Victorian, Romantic, Vampire, Pastel, Lolita, Cyber, Raver, Nu Goth, Minimal, Mall Goth, Steampunk, etc. They’re all references to style types in the subculture. You do not have to adhere to one or identify with anything specifically. This is simply a preference thing.
you can be goth and like pink
you can be goth and enjoy the warmth of sunlight on your skin
you can be goth and not be corpsely white
you can be goth and like rap
you can be goth and work a very “ungoth” profession
you can be goth and like neon colors
you can be goth and have natural colored hair
you can be goth and wear other shades besides just black (gray, white, darker shades of colors)
you can be goth and have natural eyebrows
you can be goth and be HORRIBLE at doing your makeup, so you don’t wear any at all
you can be goth and live in a very “normal” looking house
you can be goth and buy your clothes from thrift stores, clearance sections, and Walmart
you can be goth & be Christian
you can be goth & not religious at all
goth is a FEELING. goth is about what is inside. goth is a musical genre, and literature. goth is a love for the macabre, the dark, the overlooked. but you can be goth & still enjoy very “normal” & “typical” things. some of the most “gothic” people look like your average person on the street, but encompass goth to the fullest the second you get to know them.
