Em Grand Rapids, Michigan, em 28 de outubro de 1915, um grupo de 24 homens das congregações de Sherman Street e Oakdale Park se reuniu para discutir uma nova igreja. Enfrentando restrições de instalações, Sherman Street e Oakdale Park, desejando um ministério em inglês, estimularam a iniciativa.

Avancemos para 14 de janeiro de 1916, quando a congregação, movida pelo entusiasmo, sancionou a aquisição de três lotes no cruzamento de Neland e Watkins. Simultaneamente, eles adotaram uma nova identidade: Neland Ave Christian Reformed Church.

Hoje, a Neland Ave CRC está enraizada no mesmo local onde começou em 1916. Ela continua empenhada em alargar a porta da tenda – um símbolo da sua dedicação em ser uma igreja para todos os filhos de Deus. A missão persiste: ministrar a cada um dos filhos de Deus e ser ministrado pela diversificada tapeçaria de sua congregação.

Ao longo dos anos, a presença da congregação e as iniciativas de extensão comunitária floresceram, criando uma demanda crescente por espaço adicional. À medida que o envolvimento da igreja com a comunidade se expandia, tornou-se cada vez mais evidente que as instalações existentes eram insuficientes para acomodar as actividades e programas crescentes destinados a servir e a conectar-se com um público mais vasto.

Em resposta às crescentes exigências da comunidade eclesial, a Neland Ave Christian Reformed Church estabeleceu uma parceria estratégica com a Elevate Studio e a GDK Construction. Este esforço colaborativo foi impulsionado pela visão partilhada de melhorar a infra-estrutura da igreja para melhor atender às suas necessidades crescentes. O novo nártex, que serve de entrada e espaço de encontro, foi concebido com o objetivo de promover um ambiente acolhedor e convidativo. Simultaneamente, as instalações ampliadas da cozinha respondem à natureza comunitária da igreja, proporcionando um centro para comunhão e refeições partilhadas. A adição de salas de aula sublinha o compromisso com o crescimento educacional e espiritual, acomodando várias faixas etárias e programas dentro da congregação. Além disso, a disponibilização de espaços de escritório melhorados reconhece as exigências administrativas e organizacionais essenciais para o funcionamento eficiente da igreja. Esta iniciativa colaborativa demonstra a dedicação da Neland Ave CRC à adaptabilidade e visão no atendimento às crescentes necessidades da sua comunidade.

The Influence of Pregnancy on Women's Cardiovascular Health

Throughout pregnancy, the body goes through many necessary changes to support the developing baby. Although size may be the first and most visual, many other important changes cannot be seen, including adaptations to the cardiovascular system. Doctors have called pregnancy the "ultimate stress test" (Nelander et al., 2016) as changes during pregnancy can exacerbate pre-existing conditions or cause new ones, which unfortunately can present serious challenges for maternal health during pregnancy and in the future (Hall et al., 2011).

It is often misunderstood that women are no longer affected by maternal physiological adaptations once pregnancy is over. However, complications and conditions that develop during pregnancy and delivery can have major health effects that can emerge years or decades after giving birth.

Populations at Risk

Women who have a history of gestational diabetes have a 70% higher risk for developing CVD. The increased risk is related to later attaining Type 2 Diabetes, which is experienced by roughly half of all women who've had gestational diabetes within ten years. (Rich-Edwards et al., 2010; Shah et al., 2008)

Women who experience preeclampsia, a hypertensive disorder, during pregnancy are four times more likely to have hypertension in the future and twice as likely to develop heart disease than women who did not have preeclampsia. (Rich-Edwards et al., 2010; Nelander et al., 2016)

Mothers who deliver preterm (<37 weeks of gestation) are around twice as likely to develop CVD compared to mothers whose pregnancies lasted a full term. (Rich-Edwards et al., 2010; Gao et al., 2020)

In conclusion, cardiovascular conditions that develop during pregnancy have a significant influence on women's health in the future. We must focus on implementing interventions to support women's cardiovascular health during pregnancy to benefit mothers in the short and long term.

Identifican proteína para tratar cáncer infantil en tejido nervioso

Un grupo de científicos de la Universidad de Uppsala, en Suecia, identificó -a partir de un algoritmo informático- un tratamiento prometedor para el neuroblastoma, un tipo de cáncer infantil que se desarrolla en el tejido nervioso.

El posible tratamiento, publicado en la revista científica Nature Communications, se basa en la activación de una proteína receptora, denominada receptor 2 de cannabinoides (CNR2), en el sistema nervioso.

Mediante un comunicado los investigadores explicaron que fue gracias a un algoritmo informático, capaz de combinar cantidades masivas de datos genéticos y farmacológicos de hospitales europeos y estadounidenses, lo que permitió que esta proteína se aplicara terapéuticamente.

Nos sorprendió cuando el algoritmo sugirió ideas completamente nuevas para el tratamiento, como CNR2, que nadie había discutido en este contexto. Así que decidimos investigar esto con mayor profundidad en el laboratorio", dijo el responsable del estudio, Sven Nelander.

Para probar su eficacia, los investigadores analizaron dicha proteína en muestras de células y en modelos animales.
