Part three of me listing books on my bookshelf that i've read. At this point i'm feeling tired from writing, but I might as well commit and finish this damn thing. But once i'm done, I'm doing back to reading comics and maybe watching tv with my dad once he gets home from work. Because this is shockingly draining. So here we go:
The Neil Flambe Capers by Kevin Sylvester (I think these are my only books that are actually Canadian written. I think I found them in my public library years ago, and I was hooked. Cooking based Detective Novels about a lonely, socially awkward teenage cooking savant? They were pretty fun. My one criticism? They ended on a cliffhanger, and they haven't made a seventh book to resolve the cliffhanger! It's been at least five years! That still bugs me!).
The Land of Stories series by Chris Colfer (I never watched Glee, so this is my only experience with Chris Colfer. I thought he was a pretty good writer. I really liked his stuff, although I never did get around to finishing the series. Knowing how finicky I am on endings, I worry that the ending would leave me upset and unsatisfied. But putting that aside, his characters were pretty good. I still remember that he chose to portray Mother Goose as a wild old woman who liked alcohol. That was fun. I also liked the Prince who was turned into a Frog, but then just embraced it and kept to himself, living lonely and alone for years).
Some of the Rick Riordan Presents books (I have the Aru Shah books, although I only ever got around to reading the first one. I have the first one in the Tristan Strong series, though I haven't read it. I read Sal and Gabi break the Universe, and it was really funny and enjoyable. I read The Storm Runner by JC Cervantes, but I don't remember much of the plot, and I never got around to the sequels. I read Race to the Sun by Rebecca Roanhorse, which was a great book that taught me about Navajo myth. I read Dragon Pearl by Yoon Ha Lee, but it was a space opera type of story, and I didn't love it excessively. And I apparently own one The Last Fallen Star by Graci Kim. Seriously, I forgot I owned this book. How can you forget owning a book!?).
The Hardy Boys series (I don't remember when I picked these books up, but I ended up with like the first 20 of these books. They weren't bad, although I don't really remember them too well nowadays. But for being children's detective fiction written in the 30s and 40s, it was pretty good. The one interesting thing about them? No known writer. They were written by multiple different people under one pseudonym, so we can only guess at the writers. I once considered trying the Nancy Drew books, since they were made by the same publisher and just featured a female lead instead of male leads. But I never got around to owning them).
The Underland Chronicles by Suzanne Collins (In elementary school, a French teacher I had suggested these books to me. I told her I hated the Hunger Games, and she said these books were her preferred books from Suzanne Collins. So I read them. And yeah, they were far superior to The Hunger Games. But they're also so goddamn sad. Their ending made me feel miserable, because it was one of those endings where the character could never return to the fantasy realm. And that made me really sad).
I also have picked up a lot of humour books over the years. At least ten of the Diary of a Wimpy Kid books and stuff like that. But I never felt like bringing those books to school, so those were sort of like my secret (I guess). But I do like a lot of humour. Comedy is something I almost always enjoy. But this has all been so much writing, that i'm finally exhausted. So i'm done now. sigh.

Joining a dead/dying fandom. Also applies to things without fandoms and small/microfandoms. It’s more painful if you’ve started shipping a ship.

Dead Poets Society: Neil x OC: part 7
masterlist
complete series
‘A man is not very tired, he is exhausted. And don't use very sad, use-’ my dad says as he walks to the front of the classroom and points to the back of it, ‘Come on, Mr. Overstreet, you twerp.’
‘Morose?’
‘Exactly! Morose. Now, language was developed for one endeavor, and that is? Mr. Anderson? Come on! Are you a man or an amoeba?’
My father stands before Todd's desk. Todd looks up nervously but says nothing. My dad pauses for a moment before looking away. ‘Mr. Perry?’
‘Uh, to communicate’, he opts.
‘No! To woo women’, he says, causing the boys to chuckle, ‘Today we're going to be talking about William Shakespeare.’
The class lets out a collective sigh, ‘Oh God’, except for me, since I’ve grown to love the author. ‘I know. A lot of you looked forward to this about as much as you look forward to root canal work. We're gonna talk about Shakespeare as someone who writes something very interesting. Now, many of you have seen Shakespeare done very much like this:’ my dad holds out his right arm dramatically and begins to speak in an exaggerated British accent. ‘"O Titus, bring your friend hither." But if any of you have seen Mr. Marlon Brando, you know, Shakespeare can be different. "Friend, Romans, countrymen, lend me your ears." You can also imagine, maybe, John Wayne as Macbeth going, "Well, is this a dagger I see before me?"’
All of us are seated together near the front of the room as my father reads from a book.
‘"Dogs, sir? Oh, not just now. I do enjoy a good dog once in a while, sir. You can have yourself a three-course meal from one dog. Start with your canine crudites, go to your Fido flambe for main course and for dessert, a Pekingese parfait. And you can pick your teeth with a little paw."’ As we all listen to the story, and laugh at my dads impressions, I lean against Neil who’s leaning against a desk. As I lean against his chest, his arm lays around my waist, though it is out of side of my dad.
When we all sat back in their normal seats and dad leaps up onto his desk. ‘Why do I stand up here? Anybody?’
‘To feel taller.’ Charlie calls from the back of the class.
‘No!’ my dad rings the bell on his desk with his foot, ‘Thank you for playing, Mr. Dalton. I stand upon my desk to remind yourself that we must constantly look at things in a different way.’ He glances around the classroom from atop the desk. ‘You see, the world looks very different from up here. You don't believe me? Come see for yourself. Come on. Come on!’
Charlie and Neil quickly rise from their seats to go to the front of the classroom, and I follow suite. The rest of the class follows us. While my dad continues speaking, Neil and Charlie join him on the desk and then he jumps down.
‘Just when you think you know something, you have to look at it in another way. Even though it may seem silly or wrong, you must try! Now, when you read, don't just consider what the author thinks. Consider what you think.’ with that the two boys jump down too. Neil stands by the side of the desk and reaches his hand out to me to help me off the desk.
Boys, you must strive to find your own voice. Because the longer you wait to begin, the less likely you are to find it at all. Thoreau said, "Most men lead lives of quiet desperation." Don't be resigned to that. Break out!’ he pauses for a second then continues. ‘Don't just walk off the edge like lemmings. Look around you.’
The school bell rings as the boys continue to climb onto the desk. My father begins to gather up his stuff. The clock begins to toll as he walks to the back of the class. ‘There! There you go, Mr. Priske. Thank you! Yes! Dare to strike out and find new ground. Now, in addition to your essays, I would like you to compose a poem of your own, an original work.’ The students begin to groan and he begins flickering the lights off and on while chanting ominously, ‘That's right! You have to deliver it aloud in front of the class on Monday. Bonne chance, gentlemen and lady.’ He steps out into the hall before quickly peeking back in once again. I see that Todd is the last one to stand on the desk and is about to jump off.
‘Mr. Anderson?’ my dad says causing him to stop, ‘Don't think that I don't know that this assignment scares the hell out of you, you mole.’ He flicks the light off again, leaving Todd to jump down in the darkness as the students laugh.
I sat alone in my room, reading while laying on my bed in some comfy clothes, when Neil comes in. ‘Ow hey Neil’, I smile, looking up. But then I see him flexing and unflexing his hand, ‘hey what’s up.’ I must’ve looked concerned, cause he smiles sheepishly at me: ‘I was on my way here from my room but Mr. Nolan called me to his office and uh, ‘he pauses, holding up his knuckles to show me his bruised up hands, ‘gave me a beating with a ruler.’
‘What?! Why?!’ I say, jumping up and taking hold op his hands to examen the bruising.
‘For “making inappropriate advances at Mr. Keatings daughter”.’ he quotes.
‘What?’ I say looking up at him, an expression of disbelief on my face, ‘But Nolan didn’t even come here to confirm if anything happened, it doesn’t make any sense’
‘Well, that’s the way they rule this school’, he simply states.
I fall silent for a moment, before asking: ‘Does it hurt?’
‘Meh, just a little bit, don’t worry about it’, he tries to reassure me.
‘Come on, let’s go to the infirmary, those kind of bruises hurt, they don’t need to hurt any more.’ I take a gentle hold of his hand as we walk to the infirmary.
Once we’re there I make him down on one of those beds, I take the first aid kit out of the cupboard. I take a hold of one of his hand as I patch it up. Though I’m aware of Neils gaze on me, I don’t look up, even if it causes my cheeks to burn bright red. As I finish up his 2nd hand, I feel his other hand gently caress my cheek and jaw. Though I have to admit I enjoy it, I don’t look up yet.
Only when I’m done I look up. And when I do, I get chills from the look in his eyes. Such pure passion. I feel him wrap his other hand around and pull me close to him. To prevent myself from falling, I catch myself by putting my hand on Neils shoulder and upper arm. We are so close now, our noses touch, and before I can even comprehend what’s going on, Neil kisses me. It an extremely passionate kiss that takes my breath away. Even though it catches me off guard, it doesn’t take me long to start kissing him back. We pull each other even closer, so that I now stand between his legs as he’s still seated on the infirmary bed. The kiss deepens, and my hands find their way into his hair. As I slightly pull on the ends, I can hear him groan, which I like. Unfortunately, we eventually run out of air and have to pull apart. The kiss leaves both of panting in a short moment of shock as to what’d just happened.
Tumblr media
‘I’m sorry I got a little carries away,’ he apologizes, though I can clearly see the smirk on his face.
‘Don’t worry, I didn’t mind’, I blush, smiles sheepishly up at him.
‘Can I kiss you again?’ he asks, looking down at my lips. And so he does.
After a while longer, Neil walks me back to my room. As we reach it, I lean up to kiss his cheek, but he turns his head and smirks. As I feel my cheeks heat up again, I kiss him on the lips. His arm reach around my waist, as mine wrap around his neck.
‘OW I almost forgot’, he smiles as we pull apart, ‘I came to tell you something, before the whole thing with Mr Nolan.’ He leads me to sit on the bed, holding my hand. There he talks about the play, and the auditions, and about him participating. He bounces on the bed excitedly as he does.
‘That’s great!’ I exclaim, smiling at him. We talk for a while longer, occasionally stealing kisses every now and again. Eventually he has to leave to go do some homework, so he gets up and kisses me goodbye one more time. ‘I realize I haven’t really asked. Evangeline, will you be my girlfriend.’
‘And here I thought I’d be obvious by now’, I say, while still wrapped in his arms, ‘yes.’
He leans down to kiss me again, but at that moment the door opens to reveal the Dead Poets at the door: ‘My my, how the tables have tabled.’ Charlie states smirking.

I second asoue and artemis fowl, both books with lots of similar themes to httyd, even if they have very different plots and vibes. If you like asoue and atwq you should check out the secret series by pseudonymous bosch.
Another great british author is anthony horowitz. He writed horror but his Alex Rider series is about spies. Its really different from httyd but the protaganist solves difficult situations in clever ways like Hiccup does. The villains are also kind of remniscent of Alvin.
Im also going to add two canadian authors: Kevin Sylvester and Kevin Sands.
Kevin Sylevster wrote the Neil Flambe Capers, about a teenage chef solving mysteries and MiNRS, about child colonizers and child labourers in space. I'd say MiNRS has some similar themes to httyd, whereas Neil Flambe has similar humour and writing style to httyd.
Kevin Sands wrote the Blackthorn Key, which is about an apothecary's apprentice. Its got a simiar vibe to httyd and there is swordfighting and such while also being a great story.
I've the how to your dragon series and the wizards of once books. Any recommendations for books to read that are similar?
Thank you so much for this question!! 😊
I’ll do my best to answer, however, English is not my native language, so I am not super familiar with the Great Middle Grade series that undoubtably exist. I also read too many non fiction books when I was younger
Here are a few books/book series I found enjoyable in a similar way. (The list is not super long and none of them feature dragons, sorry.)
Most of these are more like twoo, because they’re really good but can’t touch Cressida’s masterpiece. I cannot think of ANY book series that can compare to httyd’s philosophical three way war and grand finale.
(Click read more for a list of half baked book recommendations by me XD)
1 ~ The Care and Feeding of a Pet Black Hole - Michelle Cuevas
This is a stand alone that could easily be “How to take care for a pet black hole” written by Hiccup. It’s a short book, but it has the exact same dry and clever humour and becomes truly meaningful further into the story. The ending is bittersweet too.
This is probably the book I think has the most similar atmosphere to httyd. If you could collapse the emotions from httyd into 200 pages, this would be the closest matching result.
2 ~ Percy Jackson - Or literally anything by Rick Riordan
Rick Riordan is iconic and the only one who could win a ‘chapter title battle’ from Cressida. Examples: “My sword has a better social life than I do” or “A God buys us cheeseburgers” I am very ashamed to admit I have only read the first Percy Jackson book (I really should read the rest, you may sue me for not reading this iconic series) but I really liked it and from what I heard about the rest of the series it only gets better.
At least one crazy adventure each book, plenty of swordfights and a snappy protagonist to comment on everything. I’m not sure how to describe it accurately, but these books are written with the same hilarious tone as Cressida’s. You can read them out loud and they’d be funny I guess?
Also: Main characters with ADHD and dyslexia (looking at you Wish and Xar), characters from different countries, cultures and LGBT characters who have storylines outside of that characteristic. If you liked vikings, Magnus Chase is his triology about demigod children of Norse gods (though long series probably won’t bother you as httyd book fan).
3 ~ Cogheart - Peter Bunzl
These books are fun steampunk adventures. The setting is vaguely historical, but with victorians instead of vikings, pesky adults who don’t listen to children very well and an unusual pet companion. There’s also a secondary storyline about how beings with human intelligence are treated as lesser, and it’s treated important enough without overshadowing the main plot.
I’ve read the first two and so far it’s a series where you can read each book separate (though the first few httyd books could also be read as separates). There are two more and perhaps the secondary citizen issue will end up being the overarching plot?
4 ~ How to Become King - Jan Terlouw
The clue is in the title. The main character wants to become king, but has to complete 7 impossible tasks first. It does not get more straightforward than that.
The book does not have Cressida’s ridiculous humour, but the main character is Pure Good like Hiccup and each impossible quest actually has a lot of depth to it. A big part of the story emphasizes how humility and kindness are the things that make a good king. It’s a pretty old book and probably the most unknown one on this list.
5 ~ The Slightly Alarming Tale of the Whispering Wars - Jaclyn Moriarty
(I own a signed copy of this and the author was so nice) It is the second book set in this world, but with new characters. She said it can be read on its own, but perhaps it could be a bit confusing if you haven’t read the first. I hadn’t read the first and I was confused.
The absolute highlight of this book was the narration. There are two narrators who take turn narrating, and while doing so they comment on each other. They argue with each other and quip about how they do a better job narrating. It makes you feel like you’re part of the story too, similarly how Hiccup addresses the reader and comments on his younger self.
6 ~ Artemis Fowl - Eoin Colfer
Did anybody say fiendishly clever plan? When it comes to cheating death and trickery, Artemis Fowl is Hiccup and Xar’s long lost sibling. Except.... he is not as nice. To quote Camicazi: “You see, [I] have no morals at all. It's very useful...”
Where Hiccup was a Pure Cinnamon Roll and Xar an emotional hotheaded disaster, Artemis is a straight up bastard who cares for only four (4) people in total.
It’s very reminiscent of the earlier httyd books. Silly schemes, potty humour and characters that walk a fine line between likeable and annoying. I have not read the entire series yet, but the characters slowly mature with each book.
7 ~ Ella Enchanted - Gail Carson Levine
This is more of a twisted fairytale like twoo and not a fantasy epic like httyd. It’s the story of a girl on an impossible quest in a fantasy world. There are a lot of fairytale tropes, but I really liked how the extremely complex kingdom fit into one book.
It’s the only book on this list where different languages are a major plot point, and there is an inequality problem with some creatures, similar to the wild dragons in httyd. The ending can’t compare to the satisfying yet bittersweet solution of book 12. It’s a fairytale happily ever after and certainly easier on the heart than httyd.
? ~ Anything by Roald Dahl
Everyone knows Roald Dahl, which is why this is probably an useless recommendation. His books are funny, crazy and sometimes a bit grim, but always great. What else can I say?
? ~ The gentleman’s guide to vice and virtue - Mackenzi Lee
Ok, this one is by no means a middle grade book. More like 15+. (There is violence and romance is a major plotline. Both the violence and romance are 15+, and while I did not find it too bad, it might not be for everyone)
However, it has almost all of the ingredients of a Cressida book. I really felt like I should include it because it belongs somewhere high on this list! On the surface it’s a whacky adventure with a sassy protagonist in a somewhat historical fantasy setting. Below that surface, it deals with major issues in an absolutely beautiful way.
The quotes are not as artistic, but this is the ONLY book I’ve ever read with messages that hit as hard and are written as subtly as the ones in the httyd books. (I have read books more beautiful, and books with greater messages than this one, but the serious parts were woven into the story in such a refined way.... I’ve only read that in Cressida’s books.)
Mind you, the protagonist is more of a Disaster Boy ™ than Xar and I wanted to slap him sometimes. Like Xar, he learns and gets better.
~
A few other books I should mention
Coraline by Neil Gaiman. The story is not similar to httyd and twoo at. all. which is why it’s not on the list. However, this is the ultimate book about not-so-great parents. Hiccup and the entire twoo gang can relate. Just a heads up: this is a somewhat scary story. Cressida doesn’t shy away from suspense and terrifying details, but in Coraline, the suspense is one of the main aspects.
A series of unfortunate events from Lemony Snicket. I haven’t read this, but I still want to. From what I’ve heard it’s a sarcastic adventure series that’s a lot more serious than it looks.
I have never read this series either, I do not even know what it’s about, but I’ve heard people from the httyd books fandom talk about it: Keeper of the lost cities by Shannon Messenger.
~
I hope this list was the kind of answer you were hoping for!
If you are looking for better recommendations, there are a lot of httyd book fans who can give you some, like @books-are-like-dragons @thefellowshipofthedragonmark @httydbooks-doodler .

What is the greatest piece of advice you were ever given? Finish the stupid book.
Award-winning author and illustrator Kevin Sylvester is the creator of the Neil Flambé series and the recent Kindie Award-winning MiNRS.
The Proust-Esque Questionnaire is based on a set of 36 standardized questions designed by Marcel Proust in the 1890’s to give an overview of the respondent’s personality. Kinderlit asked Kevin to complete the questionnaire in efforts to gain some insight about the beloved, hilarious illustrator. Check it out: (x)
