The forbidden crack! Untamed prompts: 18/?
University AU: “Negative Space”
[ok so, self projection is a bitch, but I am petty to myself on a regular basis so it’s ok]
[title is from the Japanese concept “ma”, which Wikipedia describes as:
“a Japanese word which can be roughly translated as ‘gap’, ‘space’, ‘pause’ or ‘the space between two structural parts.’ In traditional Japanese arts and culture, ma is more carefully defined as the suggestion of an interval. It is best described as a consciousness of a sense of place, with the ‘intervals’ suggested often being more than simple gaps, instead focusing on the intention of a negative space in an art piece.
Ma is not necessarily an art concept created by compositional elements, such as the literal existence of a negative space. Instead, the intention is often to create the perception of an interval in the viewer experiencing the elements forming an art piece, making maless reliant on the existence of a gap, and more closely related to the perceived experience of a gap.
Ma has also been described as ‘an emptiness full of possibilities, like a promise yet to be fulfilled’, and as ‘the silence between the notes which make the music’.”
Fun fact: “ma” also means “but” in Italian, which is what usually follows whatever intrusive thought may plague my mind. Eg: “I may be useless now, BUT just you wait until I get some dopamine to get me through this shitty times.”]

Wei Ying never asked for much in his life. He’s content with cleaning classrooms and toilets and nobody can beat him at wiping the marble floors if he works hard enough. Granny Wen, his supervisor, is slightly impressed with his ability to make the wood shine for ages to come. His nephew Jin Ling sometimes comes to check on him when he’s done with senior classes or cram school in the evening, and together they sit down and listen to whatever his older friends in music production came up with during the day. Jiang Cheng occasionally would ask him to keep him company while he grades papers and they bitch about ZiXuan and his inability to dote on their sister. The cafeteria ladies are always nice to him and they give him extra congee because they worry for his questionable consumption of spice products.
He’s fine, really.
So why can’t he stop wandering over to the science building these days? Looking for a clean board to use, for an equation to finally solve? Even if in the end he just takes the chalk in hand and simply stares down at the inky surface in front of him, unable to write. His mind working on a software too advanced for the hardware that constitutes his brain.
Thirteen years. It has been already thirteen years and yet it feels like yesterday, or like it never happened at all. Like it has yet to be. Time blindness is a bitch to deal with, yet dyscalculia and ADHD makes a joke out of you when you love math on a visceral level... but you burned too bright too fast and now you function on no data and with an even shittier signal. Having a burnout at 23 should have taught him humility instead of pride, but Wei Ying has always worked out of spite and certain habits are difficult to forget.
Couldn’t put the number in the right order, switching digits left and right since he was young? Fine. Numbers were concepts anyway, entire civilizations working their magic without even knowing what “zero” stood for. A brain steaming with a million ideas per second? Good. New connections brimming with ideas he could use to better the world.
It worked fine until he let himself down. Until he became a useless empty lighter, a wet match tossed out, carbon monoxide in the air.
Dropped out before finishing his very ambitious, highly dangerous for his psyche, thesis project. Aunt Yu never forgave him for that, not after paying for his advanced classes, not after trusting Uncle Jiang and supporting him despite his many flaws. What good is being first of your class every year, poster child of a teaching system done right, graduating bachelor at 21, if you can’t finish your master at 23 and get your PhD at 25 and start teaching by 27 and drive yourself insane in the process?
Wei Ying dropped out and didn’t finish his master, didn’t enroll in the teaching program, and let everyone down. His Uncle and Aunt looking down on him, whether out of pity or shame. Jiang Cheng may have been the one leaving him behind, but he used to be the one saying “you should have tried harder”. YanLi worrying over him when she should have focused on her career first. Jin Ling growing up with stories of his uncle “not being worth the money put into his education”, taught to not disappoint and make his family proud. The Jin side, that is.
And now the kid comes crawling in defeat to him instead of Jiang Cheng after bombing a test in high school. And they chat of what he would like to do and how much he likes sports and how much he despises the idea of getting a scholarship for that and being called stupid or something by his classmates. And he cries when he thinks Wei Ying cannot see him as he leaves the campus late at night.
Wei Ying didn’t even want to solve that impossible theorem he fixated on in his early twenties. His thesis project was inconsequential in the great scheme of things and his professor only wanted him to be his one trick pony in the end. No. Wei Ying wanted to teach math in elementary school, hell... even in kindergarten. He wanted to change the approach to the subject. Because numbers cannot be taught like language is and there are many ways to teach how to sum up digits and divide quantities and there are no rules on how to make sense of space either.
But how can he teach when even time eludes his senses?
Something that nobody can define, but certainly most perceive as linear... but not him. Not since his brain fried up in his attempt to function like a normal human being.
After thirteen years nothing has changed.
Until one day he hears something else aside from his usual intrusive thoughts and burdensome memories. A melody so quiet he almost mistakes it for the wind, coming from the music building.
He walks slowly, night surrounding him like the embrace of a friend as he makes his way to the traditional musical instruments room. The one where Jin Ling’s friends meet sometimes as they wait for the younger boy to join them. Wei Ying holds his breath as he spies through the gap of the door left ajar, neon light slicing his face like moonbeams as he peeks in and recognizes Jin Ling’s friends and another figure sitting on the ground, guqin on their knees.
But before he can lean in and breathe in the vibrant sounds all around, the door opens and music theory Professor Lan finds Wei Ying clutching his mop for dear life.
They said the man could see colors within the notes, that he despises language outside of his class or office and that only his brother, the history of art TA, could convince him to talk every now and then.
If numbers were created to measure space, Wei Ying firmly believed music had been invented to make sense of time and count its seconds in rhythm and notes, pauses and beats. Yet, time seems to stretch to a stop as the janitor focuses all of his attention on professor Lan’s stern face and his heart quickens its pace.
Wei Ying takes a rushed breath and dives right in with a weird sense of hope pumping in his veins. A small, timid voice whispering that life is not made to be atoned, but to move on and grow.
One step at a time.
“I’m Wei Ying, Professor Lan. May I listen while you play?”
Yes, maybe it will be enough just to let time flow at its pace.
Whatever rhythm that may be.
*
[some hcs down below]
WWX does not magically solve the math theorem. he may or may not help kids figure out how to use numbers on the long run tho. no, he will still work as a janitor and there’s nothing wrong with that.
yes, LWJ is autistic and stimms and finds WWX’s honesty soothing. yes, you can add your hcs on the matter. he has synesthesia, but more on the grapheme-color side of the deal than anything else and he sees certain letters/numbers/notes in different colors. people think he can see colors in music, but they misunderstood and thought he could recognize different hues while listening to music instead of reading it.
JC has grown since his uni years and doesn’t resent WWX anymore. he teaches astrophysics as a TA and doesn’t pressure his brother to pick his studies up anymore. WWX has mixed feelings about this: he feels he’s a lost cause, to the point not even his brother spurs him to best himself anymore, but he is grateful for the patience anyway.
LXC is the official LWJ translator of the campus along with their cousins SiZhui and JinGyi. he bonds with WWX and JC over how tired they are, seldom staring at flies roaming above them in the cafeteria bc none of them can even move. he lives on caffeine and regrets, but he’s getting better as he develops a love for his plant babies and tries to not let them die on a daily basis.
Wen Ning and Wen Qing are little overachievers and adrenaline junkies, hence their competitive streak on their way to their third master degree just for funsies. they scare people with how driven they are, but the juniors love them.
NMJ is the one to go to if you need to get away with murder, but JGY will actually be the one helping you dispose of the body. the fact that they both work in criminal law is somewhat both reassuring and disquieting. they hate each other and yet cannot stop hang out, they are close to 40 and need the rivalry to keep going anyway. nothing beats a good nemesis. not even sex. maybe.
NHS has failed his entrance exam to become a nurse too many times to count, but he is determined to see the end of it. even if he could potentially work in the family business, but he doesn’t know anything about managing an empire of bricks and he doesn’t care. if NMJ could run away, well, so can he.
MianMian is Wei Ying’s bestie and has the biggest crush on JGY’s sister A-Su the kindergarten teacher, but since they are childhood besties she doesn’t know how to approach her. she is Jin Ling’s idol and a certified boxer and refers to herself as a useless bisexual. Wei Ying boxes with her sometimes, she always win.
YanLi is an equestrian mum, but in the best way possible: she coaches children for shows and teaches them horses should be loved and feared equally and that if you want to shoot arrows from a running horse you should always, ALWAYS let go of the stirrups the moment the beast gets too unhinged to ride. JC fears her, WWX is only glad she didn’t train police dogs for a living.
ZiXuan actually loves his wife, but WWX and JC question his career choices and the fact that he’s a retired lawyer spending his family fortune while he’s a stay-at-home dad and does all the housework. WWX and JC believe he should give their sister a better life and work his ass off to deserve her, but he does make amazing rice cakes and keeps up with Jin Ling’s studies and is very supportive of his dreams.
A-Qing and Song Lan are siblings and sometimes bring JC food from the campus cafeteria where they both work at, while Xiao XingChen and his carer Xue Yang work with LXC for a project on accessibility for visually impaired visitors of the local museum. JC and LXC work to make Song Lan and Xiao XingChen fall for each other, but the youngsters are too protective to let them play matchmaker so easily.
[this is all for now. please, if you want, add your own headcanons!]

All the books I read in 2019, reviewed in 2 sentences or less.
The annual tradition returns! These are all the books I read in the last year, and how I felt about them in two sentences or less.
Blue Mars - Kim Stanley Robinson: This was the final book of the science fiction trilogy that exploded my brain at the end of 2018, and the after-shocks lasted well into 2019. These books capture something essential about the relationship between place and politics that you can only do with science fiction.
Bark - Lorrie Moore: A thoroughly uneven book of short stories - when they were good, they were great, when they were bad, they were bumbling takes on the domestic side of the war on terror.
Farewell to Arms - Ernest Hemingway: Maybe it's just my mood in the forsaken year of 2019, but I just have no tolerance any more for works of art that aestheticize the degradation of the human spirit. This book made me feel near constant disgust.
Mrs. Dalloway - Virginia Woolf: In contrast, I think you can create works of art that dignify people even in their darkest moments, and offer a bridge into the experience of others that can be a passage into becoming a better person. It's always nice to read a book for a second time and realize you can keep reading it again for years to come.
The Asshole Survival Guide - Robert I. Sutton: We all have assholes that we have to work with, and sometimes it's necessary to have some external validation that it's not all your fault, and that establishing distance between yourself and said assholes is a good idea.
My Invented Country - Isabelle Allende: It took me until the very end of this book to realize there was a different memoir by Allende that I meant to read instead. This one was not so great.
Catch-22 - Joseph Heller: Gonzo literary comfort food.
The Golem and the Jinni - Helene Wecker: I found this book charming enough, but it never totally wowed me at any particular point. I think it showed that the concept of two magical creatures from different cultural contexts meeting in turn of the century New York is an interesting thought experiment, but a struggle to land as a full narrative.
Kafka on the Shore - Haruki Murakami: Prior to this, the only Murakami I had read was What I Talk About When I Talk About Running, and it's safe to say that did not properly prepare me for the surreal darkness of Kafka on the Shore, which seems to never stop going deeper into the abyss.
God Save Texas - Lawrence Wright: There are very few books about modern Texas that don't try to valorize it, or douse it with excessive nostalgia, and this is one of them. A politically-astute, funny meander through the state as it is, not as it might have once been, or never was.
M Train - Patti Smith: Patti Smith is obviously a genius, but this one didn't leave a great mark on me. Worth revisiting some other time, I think, since it's my girlfriend's favorite book.
Working - Robert Caro: I am shamefully still putting off my years-old plan to read Robert Caro's LBJ series, and finish his book on Robert Moses. In the meantime, this is a thoughtful reflection on how and why to tell stories about power.
Feel Free - Zadie Smith: I love Zadie Smith, and if you haven't read her non-fiction essays, you are missing out on some of her most exciting and moving writing. This is her second collection of essays, and you can tell how much the decade since the first has taken its toll - so many more of the pieces are about fear and frustrations, and the language is much wearier, even while it is still penetrating and beautiful.
The Telling - Ursula K. Le Guin: A slim, late novel from one of the best to ever do it, this book projects the sense of engrossing calm that reminds me most of all of listening to a story well-told - not incidentally, an experience that is a key theme of the plot itself.
Stories of Your Life and Others - Ted Chiang: On the other hand, the short stories in this book all came off as one note thought experiments that failed to build compelling worlds.
The Overstory - Richard Powers: Not just my favorite book of the year, but also one of my favorite ever, The Overstory is the book I talked the most about, and told the most people to read in 2019. The best way to explain it ('it's a book about people who become obsessed with trees') really undersells things, because it's also about forest ecology, generations of trauma, the terror and clarity of radical thought, and a soul-splitting vision of hope. It receives the coveted 3rd sentence in the review, because I just need to emphasize again that you should read this book.
The Flamethrowers - Rachel Kushner: Maybe it was the fate of any book that I read after The Overstory, but The Flamethrowers left me feeling cold. It wandered off into too many fanciful-seeming plot arcs that didn't develop all the characters to the depth they needed.
What is Populism? - Jan-Werner Müller: I re-read this book because I wanted to revisit his ideas about the strengths and weaknesses of populists ahead of the next election, and whether there is ever a version of populism suitable for the left agenda. I finished worried, and skeptical, respectively, on those two points.
The Great Derangement - Amitav Ghosh: I don't read many books about climate change - I find there are very few things that I really feel like need saying in the face of the obvious and overwhelming - but I'm glad I made time for this one, which focuses on both the global north-south dynamics of the issue, and the inability of storytelling to capture the problem in full. It's profoundly difficult to sum up in two sentences, but it's worth a full read.
There, There - Tommy Orange: I think this novel asks too much of characters that are too thin to hold what they are made to bear. Too busy at the same time as it's too ordered to be fully credible.
The Slynx - Tatyana Tolstaya: I somehow convinced myself that I had read this surreal post-apocalyptic novel set in Russia 100 years after nuclear winter, but not only had I not read it, I haven't read anything like it before. A wide-ranging nightmare about authority, literacy, and the power of fear, set in its own vernacular and kaleidoscopic distortions of our authoritarian world today.
The Iliad - Homer: I wanted to re-read The Iliad because I find the idea of a hero felled by a single, discrete flaw to be a fascinating allegory, not realizing that Achilles' fatal flaw is not his heel but his anger.
Ecology of a Cracker Childhood - Janisse Ray: There isn't much widely-read nature writing about the US South, and I think Janisse Ray's book dignifies and mourns the overlooked parts of the country that may not be wilderness but still contain bits of natural grace.
Sundiver and Startide Rising - David Brin: These two novels follow the same premise of humanity entering a universe of intelligent life as the only species to reach consciousness without patronage of, and servitude to, an elder species, and the power struggle that ensues. Sadly, the premise writes a check the execution can't cash, and while the first book, leaner and more focused, is solid, the second is over-long and distracted from what made the first fascinating.
Lonesome Dove - Larry McMurtry: It took a lifetime of seeing this book (a signed first edition, from an Austin bookstore that has left no digital trace) on my parents' shelf to finally read Lonesome Dove, and it was a fitting welcome back to Texas. McMurtry's characters are fully-grown from the beginning, made of both broad archetypes and fine detail, and the narrative gives them the journey they deserve.
The Goldfinch - Donna Tartt: There are very few novels that convey big ideas in balance with pot-boiler plotting, but this is one of them and my only regret is not reading it sooner. How dare anyone blight this novel with a terrible movie.
The Left Hand of Darkness - Ursula K. Le Guin: What makes this book special is not that it's speculative fiction about a world with unique gender arrangements; that's been done before by many other authors. What makes it special is that it investigates that world with tenderness towards its inhabitants, and an understanding of how gender weaves its way into institutions besides the family or the bedroom
Gun Island - Amitav Ghosh: I had high hopes for Gun Island, but felt it never quite rose above being a thought experiment carrying out his ideas from The Great Derangement.
The Love Affairs of Nathaniel P - Adelle Waldman: Your opinion of this book will probably hinge on how important you think it is to read books about writers in Brooklyn hanging out with other writers in Brooklyn. If you think that's still a useful world to explore, you will like that this book is merciless towards its characters, and startlingly accurate - but if you don't think that's important, you will be frustrated for the same reasons.
How to Get Filthy Rich in Rising Asia - Mohsin Hamid: A gloriously rich experimentation in genre and contemporary global politics - playful, infuriating, and heartwarming, really everything you could hope for from a short novel. This is the second book by Hamid that I've read, and I'm going to set out to read all of them as soon as I can.

WHY I'M SMARTER THAN FOUNDERS
If you ever got me, you wouldn't have a clue what to do: look at what happens to those who win lotteries or inherit money. Isn't the pointy-haired bosses. In OO languages, you can, even if you forget the experience or what you read, its effect on your model of the world. There is a very sharp dropoff in performance among VC firms, because in many cases the language layer won't have to change at all. Then I'm worried. VC firm will not screw you too outrageously, because other founders would avoid them if word got out. Large-scale investors tend to put startups in three categories: successes, failures, and the distinction between the spikes and the average becomes sharper, like a digital image rendered with more pixels. And the big hits often look risky at first. The problem is, for the company to have a low valuation. In fact, if you have a browser on your cell phone? N elements.
But as well as Lisp, so they get the pick of all the parts, as ITA presumably does, you can make the search results useless, because the first results could be dominated by lame sites that had bid the most. If you want to work on what you like, and let people design whatever object systems they want as libraries. Will there be a phone in your palm pilot?1 So the total number of new shares to the angel; if there were 1000 shares before the deal, the capitalization table looks like this: shareholder shares percent—VCs 650 33.2 My guess is that the concepts we use in everyday life that you don't have time for your ideas to evolve, and b you're often forced to take deals you don't like it. I suppose I should learn Lisp, but it is a byword for impossibility.3 Though the first philosophers in the western tradition lived about 2500 years ago, and even have bad service, and people will keep coming. 5 are now widespread. That idea is not exactly novel. If VCs got de facto control of the company 2/4 2. You can start by writing things that are useful but very specific, and then think about how to make money, but what you'd like to be able to avoid the usual chicken and egg problem new protocols face, because some of the most important things you can understand about startups.
The difference between then and now is that now I understand why Berkeley is probably not worth trying to understand.4 Neither Bill Gates nor Mark Zuckerberg knew at first how big their companies were going to spend the weekend at a friend's house for dinner. VCs also insist that prior to the deal the option pool is down to 13. We were compelled by circumstances to grow slowly, and in particular, Internet startups are still only a fraction of what the finished product will do, but that dramatic peaks can only be achieved by people with certain rare, innate qualities; nearly anyone can learn to be a complete picture. Could you describe the person as an animal? That scenario may seem unlikely now, but Fortran I didn't have them.5 The goal is the same as intelligence.6 All they need is a language that actually seems better than others that are available, there will be no more great new stuff beyond whatever's currently in the pipeline for several years after, and finally issued in 2003.7 Don't hire people to fill the gaps in some a priori org chart. That's what happened with domestic servants. Partly the reason deals seem to fall through so often is that you get less dilution.8
So someone investigated, and sure enough, that patent application had continued in the pipeline for several years after, and finally issued in 2003. And yet this guy will be almost entirely overlooked by the press. These heaps o' boilerplate are a problem for small startups, because it's always the oldest it's ever been.9 If you work hard at being a bond trader for ten years, thinking that you'll quit and write novels when you have enough money to pay a little more equity, but being slightly underfunded teaches them an important lesson. This is understandable with angels; they invest on a smaller scale and don't like to get across about startups, that's it. So when I ran into the Yahoo exec I knew from working there in the late 1950s. I know a lot of people wish that hacking was mathematics, or at least to know what they want from me. Probably because the product was a dog, or never seemed likely to be smarter. Barely usable, I admit, this is true.
We might have to give definite if implicit advice will keep us from straying beyond the resolution of the words we're using.10 Maybe mostly in one hub, and it seems to consume all your attention. But I have a hunch that the main branches of the evolutionary tree pass through the languages that have the right kind of place for developing software. They're not pretending; they want to believe you're a hot prospect, because it is the cool, new programming language. And this tradition had so long to develop that nontechnical people like managers and venture capitalists also learned it. Some languages are better than either of them?11 At the very least, you're supposed to be working on their company, not worrying about investors. They'd rather lose the deal than establish a precedent of VCs competitively bidding against one another. Wall Street's language. Since people interested in designing programming languages, a lot of good publicity for the VCs.

Kant.
Even the cheap kinds of startups will generally raise large amounts of money from it.
There's a good plan in which internal limits are expressed.
And the reason the US. Bankers continued to dress in jeans and t-shirt, they're probably a real partner. Record labels, for many Americans the decisive change in how Stripe felt. You have to do business with any firm employing anyone who had died decades ago.
I find hardest to get going, e. Economic inequality has been decreasing globally. Microsoft, incidentally, that all metaphysics between Aristotle and 1783 had been Boylston Professor of Rhetoric at Harvard Business School at the end of World War II had become so common that their system can't be buying users; that's the situation you find known boring ideas intolerable. This has, like arithmetic drills, instead of crawling back repentant at the network level, because the illiquidity of progress puts them at the lack of movement between companies combined with self-imposed.
The wave of hostile takeovers in the country. This seems unlikely at the end of economic inequality is not to pay employees this way, they'd be called acting Japanese. This sentence originally read GMail is painfully slow. Geshke and Warnock only founded Adobe because Xerox ignored them.
That's the difference between being judged as a type of product for it.
If you actually started acting like adults.
The existence of people. Why go to college, you'll be well on your own mind. All languages are equally powerful in the sort of wealth—that startups usually lose money at all.
This includes mere conventions, like the intrusive ads popular on Delicious, but trained on corpora of stupid and non-broken form, that it killed the best in the sense that if the present, and FreeBSD 1.
And while they may try allowing up to the principles they discovered. Xxvii. Wisdom is useful in solving problems too, but art is a big change in the cover story of creation in the US News list?
Thanks to Chad Fowler, Patrick Collison, Dan Giffin, Geoff Ralston, Trevor Blackwell, and Stan Reiss for the lulz.

The Finest In New Music Discovery And Curation
The second half of the 1960s ushered within the era of music festivals — culminating with the granddaddy of all of them, Woodstock, in August 1969. Scary Movie was a fairly good film that started a horrible pattern. You realize in your heart what I communicate of, for it haunts the dark corners of every Netflix and Hulu menu. Someday in the early 2000s, filmmakers completely forgot what the purpose of a spoof was. Instead of parodying broad genres, like The Naked Gun did with detectives and Austin Powers did with spy movies, folks simply started putting nouns in entrance of the word "film" and http://www.audio-transcoder.com shitting out ninety minutes of determined actors recreating scenes from pop culture like your worst co-worker. Wildly gifted songwriter who flies beneath the mainstream radar and is beloved by critics and musicians alike? Noticing a pattern here? Ron Sexsmith is another jewel in Canada's singer-songwriter crown. With his distinctive and charming voice and wonderful melodic sense, he's gained many well-known admirers including Elvis Costello and Elton John Sexsmith arrived in Toronto by the use of St. Catherines and was praised for his songwriting since his self-titled, major label debut in 1995. After crafting 14 albums worth of earnest, guitar pop, Sexsmith developed a cult following despite many of songs becoming mainstream hits for others reminiscent of Feist's ‘Secret Coronary heart' and Michael Buble's No matter It Takes'.

Rock - Referred to as one of the vital famous genres, this one is used to describe many various musical types. Initially, rock was fused collectively by two different in style genres, valoriesandridge.hatenadiary.com blues and nation, and even specific elements of jazz. The style was additionally typified and particularly recognized utilizing the snare drum. From this unimaginable genre, which was developed at its peak, in the 1950's, it also developed into many various sub-genres. These included most popularly, heavy steel, garage rock, black or death metallic, jazz rock, Indie pop, pop punk, http://torydigby103805213.wikidot.com folk rock, electronic rock and lots of more. Taking a look at a single issue similar to chord development or tonality doesnвЂt appear to be quite sufficient to outline a genre. A couple of years in the past, researchers in Venezuela discovered a unique solution to analyse MIDI recordsdata. They didnвЂt just isolate information that a musician would possibly perceive (like chord progressions) but they thought-about your complete assortment of digital info stored in the MIDI file and compressed it into the smallest doable set of symbols that also represented all the data of the piece. Then they appeared on the entropy вЂ" the variety of methods the knowledge could be interpreted вЂ" and created a profile of the diversity of the patterns they found. Originated as Rock & Roll" within the United States, Rock music has been rocking the world since the Nineteen Fifties. It is a type of music that began truly round string devices, but now uses different fashionable instruments too making it a bit tough to give it an correct definition. Its loud and powerful beats make it common among the many youths. A few of the rock stars who've popularized the tradition include Little Richard, Invoice Haley and Chuck Berry while rock bands like Pink Floyd, The Doors, Metallica, Nirvana and Megadeth are the modern bands who've taken the tradition by storm.

As a gaggle, Nile showcase a number of the greatest technical enjoying within dying metal at any level within the style's history. They show that much could be performed with a mode of music that's at occasions stubbornly towards any actual change or evolution. They're tight and don't need to change a lot type-clever to continue being superior — kind of like Slayer… only more so than each different band who're like Slayer ultimately (which is plenty of them). Karl Sanders even seems like Jeff Hanneman, that's a plus however not really. Music can be divided into genres (e.g., country music ) and genres may be further divided into subgenres (e.g., country blues and pop country are two of the various nation subgenres), although the dividing traces and relationships between music genres are often refined, sometimes open to non-public interpretation, and sometimes controversial. For instance, it can be arduous to attract the line between some early Eighties arduous rock and heavy metallic Throughout the arts , music may be classified as a performing artwork , a fine artwork or as an auditory art. Music could also be played or sung and heard live at a rock live performance or orchestra efficiency, heard live as a part of a dramatic work (a music theater present or opera), or it could be recorded and listened to on a radio, MP3 participant, CD participant , smartphone or as movie score or TELEVISION present. Michael Jackson , with the possible exception of Elvis Presley, was the epitome of bigger-than-life pop music figures. He hit the pop highlight as a toddler of eleven in 1969 along with his brothers in the group Jackson 5. At the finish of the next decade, he emerged as a young grownup recording artist. Michael Jackson recorded "Thriller," still the second best-selling album of all time in the United States (and the highest one around the globe), and was the world's largest pop star in the late Nineteen Eighties. His profession grew to become mired in tabloid rumors and felony investigations. However, his star nonetheless shone brightly when he died suddenly at age 50 in 2009. How do standard artists type their public identities by mobilizing existing stylistic kinds? Strong evidence suggests that specific imperatives" 1 impose penalties on producers for illegitimate position performance, particularly when performance is evaluated by critics and discriminating audiences, as it is in the music business. Much analysis, furthermore, argues that musical style expectations particularly profoundly arrange the music industry 2 - four , shaping how band members meet 5 - 6 , producers select and venues e-book bands 7 - eight , radio stations select what to play 9 - 10 , document label divisions are organized, music information is reported, in addition to how fans discover music to get pleasure from and people to take pleasure in it with 4 As such, style designations and expectations present crucial reference points that inform the way in which musicians construct their public presentation of self.
Within the words of P!nk (whose first album was R&B) "No one desires to listen to a love song that you do not mean". Not just the genre itself however arguably the love and romance of Modern R&B is dead. Changed by songs dealing with trashy cleaning soap opera, Jerry Springer subjects. With extra vocal gymnastics and a few obscure, treacly excessive-pitched sound within the background. The fusion of recent R&B to hip-hop tends to dilute each these Genres. Interestingly enough, Up to date R&B pushed soul music off the charts.

SSSo recently, after finishing (an admittedly long-overdue) a piece, I decided to download a trial of the new Corel Painter 2019. I hadn’t used Painter since my old DeviantArt days (circa 2005) and wanted to see how it felt with more digital art-veteran hands. Loaded it up, started sketching my default doodle-muse and wow, that “Real 2B” pencil feels great. I loved it so much, and wondered why.
That’s the story that is spawning this weird personal series of Software Surfing. I wanted to write little notes to future-me on how it felt using my favorite sketching tools in each program I have, and after the sixth one I thought it might be a good idea to check out inking, colouring, painting, etc. and writing those down as well.
So I’m writing this series for myself, but making it available in case anyone else can benefit as well. Thanks for sticking with the intro, let’s get into it.
Artist’s Software Surfing P1 - Sketching Artist’s Software Surfing P2 - Inking Artist’s Software Surfing P3 - Colouring Artist’s Software Surfing P4 - Painting
There are many ways to sketch, but this is specifically the classic “pencil” or “drawing” form using the tools with the program’s default settings.
As an introduction, this is my doodle-muse, Cloey. She was my first original character, and though I don’t usually share my anthro art on here (I know that’s not everyone’s thing) I do have a separate blog for that stuff that you can find here if you’re so inclined. If you’re familiar with Artgerm (and you should be), she’s basically my Pepper.
Corel Painter’s “Real 2B”:
The one that started it all. The pencil just GLIDES, and I’ve always loved when you can tilt a pencil tool and it will shade just like tilting a real-life pencil. The only thing I want from a program now is to be able to bind touch to blenders so I can use my finger to smudge-blend the scribbling. (I tried drawing that fist so many times /fume)
Tumblr media
Likes: Tilt functionality, line width variance, stroke speed, eraser Dislikes: Rebinding Rotate Canvas tool was a pain. I like Shift+Space, and that key combo is reflected in the shortcut panel, but it just continued to pan. Never worked for me, and rotating or flipping the page quickly is crucial for my sketching process. Also sometimes if I quickly resize the eraser and mash it down to use, it won’t detect any input.
Photoshop, Kyle Webster’s “2B” & “Animator Pencil”:
**Disclaimer** Firstly, I’ve used Photoshop for over 15 years now, and it’s a great digital art tool, but for drawing and painting I find it’s sorely lacking. It’s slow, expensive, and unintuitive. That being said, there are some things this program does exclusive to others so I’m still clinging to it (desperately) and while I would definitely recommend something else for budding digital artists, I have to supplement my misgivings by purchasing additional plugins and tools, such as the famed Kyle T Webster’s Ultimate Megapack for Photoshop (
which is now complementary with Photoshop CC, damnit
). Unless otherwise noted, all the brushes I use in Photoshop will be from that pack. **End Disclaimer**
Following off the heels of Corel, I remembered messing around with another “2B” (which btw is my personal favorite traditional pencil to sketch with) in Kyle Webster’s Drawing Box in Photoshop. It felt a bit similar, but with no tilt functionality and it really lacked the chunky-thickness (a scientific term) I enjoyed with Painter’s pencil. I switched to my favorite (and the favorite of MANY digital artists btw) his “Animator’s Pencil”. So chunky, but the ability to shade lightly... It’s really a fun brush to use for sketching digitally. Still one of my absolute favorites.
Tumblr media
Animator Pencil Likes: Line width variance, texture fills in and scales perfectly Dislikes: It’s a photoshop exclusive, a program that for some reason you can’t bind shortcuts to whatever you please, takes forever to load, and WAY too often suffers input lag while drawing. Also no tilt shading, :’( aw
Paintstorm’s “Textured Pencil” & “Pencil Tilt”
As a bit of an aside, I love Paintstorm, Paintstorm is what got me back into digital drawing and painting after doing 3D and game design for 7 years. I bought it for the very low price of entry (2 licenses for $30) and was impressed by its ability to customize literally anything in the program. You can create your own tool/brush boxes, bind any shortcut to any key combination, and every single brush tool adjustment comes with the most customization control of any program I’ve come across since Photoshop set the bar way back in the day. Out of the box a lot of the basic brushes have that old OpenCanvas or PaintTool Sai feel, but more recently they’ve added some very textured default brushes you can play around with. It’s also hands-down the FASTEST program I’ve ever worked in. I highly recommend giving it a try, it’s great for learning and experimentation. I grew a lot working in Paintstorm.
Tumblr media
The Textured Pencil is a fun sketching brush, you can get as think or thick as you’d want and it keeps a clean outline. The Pencil Tilt really blew my mind the first time I used it. YOU CAN SHADE! It was the first time I had ever seen a program do that. The tilt has a great texture, fantastic control, and gets just as dark as you’d need. I’d recommend using them both, the Textured Pencil for a cleaner sketch, and the Pencil Tilt for something more expressive or loose.
Krita’s Ink-Tilt & “Sketch”:
I’ll be honest, I have almost no experience in Krita despite having downloaded and given it a try back in 2014. It was a hell of a time to figure out how to rebind my usual shortcuts (flip horz, rotate canvas). I couldn’t even rebind colour grab/eyedropper. Yikes. I opened up the “Sketching” brush box and there were only two options, made worse as one was a sketch pen... That lacked the flexibility of ballpoint.
Tumblr media
First I grabbed the pencil dubbed “Sketch” and was bewildered why the size of the circle was so large compared to the mark it made. Very confusing. Feeling intimidated, I abandoned it immediately to try out the “ink_tilt” (which by the way there’s no tilt functionality??) and hated it. I reluctantly went back to the pencil and just started trying to make marks. Wow. It’s weird, but surprisingly fun. You have to be willing to relinquish a LOT of control, but the shapes the brush makes while moving and tilting during a stroke can yield some really interesting and suggestive shapes. I would say great for early concepting or making something really loose and expressive. Fun to play with, but not really practical.
Clip Studio Paint’s Real Pencil & Rough Pencil
I’ve been wholly immersed in CSP since I purchased the program back in late 2016. It goes on sale often, so you can pick up a nice fully featured program for ~$35. I’d had my eye on it for a while and still really want to get into self-publishing comics, so I picked it up, bought a couple of brush packs for it (it’s pretty lacking in default painting tools) and I’ve been illustrating in it ever since. The brush creation isn’t as fun as Paintstorm, but brushes are quite customizable. I usually like to use the “Rough Pencil” if I want just a little texture and line variance, or the “Darker Pencil” for something cleaner. Trying to be different, I just jotted out a couple heads in ones I don’t normally use, the Real Pencil and Design Pencil. The Real Pencil has a lot of texture, but for some reason in CSP the textures don’t seem to scale with the brush, so I tend to avoid using it in most cases. I hate the design pencil, I just could never get dark enough. I guess that’s probably the point, though.
Tumblr media
Well, that definitely wraps this digest up. I feel refreshed after trying out a lot of new digital sketching brushes. I was really reminded of how much I enjoyed drawing in Paintstorm. I hope someone other than me found this useful or otherwise inspiring! Sometimes, especially if you’re stuck in some art blockage, it’s a good idea to try something new, and for me digitally that’s hopping programs and trying new brushes.
I’m thinking about doing inks, colours, and painting at some point. Let me know if anyone’s interested in those! I’m planning on doing some for myself eventually, but I might expedite a post if anyone is interested. o/ Take it easy,  y’all.

here’s a big ol dump of art thats been sitting in my folders for anywhere between 1-3 years that at this point ill probably never finish to accompany some Really Long rambling under the cut
im a junior in college now (””should be”” a senior/whatever that means/since i took a gap year but) but when i was in my like....sophomore-senior years of high school i drew like.....every. freaking. day. like literally i feel like i would draw like, 1 or 2 fully fleshed out, give-all-my-attention to type drawings every single day of my life, and i always had so much fun doing it.
after having a while to self-reflect though ive concluded theres kind of some layers to this. because i figure theres at least a little romanticization of the past going on, because i KNOW i wasn't a very happy person in high school; in fact, mental health wise, late high school into my freshman year of college was probably my very lowest point. i did lack motivation at these points, but not for drawing; i kind of put off school work and college prep, which wasn't good, but drew like HELL every single day, and pretty much all of it was fan art. thats one of the main differences between me then and me now; i used to dedicate so much of my time and energy to “fandom” and the media i was into, and it totally fueled my desire to draw, whereas now, i obviously still enjoy different series, but... my life doesn't really revolve around them like it used to.
the way i see it, i think i definitely used to use media and fandom participation as a form of escapism, but not really the good kind... i think it was more of a maladaptive obsession i failed to keep in check that i know for a fact really got in the way of my schoolwork, and i only doubled down when it came time to apply to colleges, because of course that stressed me out and scared me; during times like that, which was almost always due to my mental health issues at the time, i clung to fandom because its what brought me comfort and kind of shielded me from my responsibilities.
either way, that obsession with whatever media i was into at any given time is also what i think gave me that desire to draw all the time that i miss so much. i think being THAT invested in something is what actually gave me the constant desire to create, and being able to create something and feel accomplished in something without having to face anything uncertain or scary kept me totally hooked. so its weird trying to parse how i feel about that time period in my life.
on one hand, my mental health has gotten SO much better. obviously ive matured a lot since high school, so over time ive learned about much better coping mechanisms and ideas about mental health, ive gotten on a medication that works for me, and ive really gotten into my major so I'm really enjoying school as well. and obviously this is progress that i would never, ever, just want to give up or throw away. however, its also this progress that seems to have inadvertently influenced how often i draw, because I'm no longer fully diving into media/fandom because i dont need that escapism anymore, and therefore i don't have this like, feverish, obsession-fueled desire to draw like i used to. its kind of a double edged sword i guess and something i don't have a clear answer to.
i also think another factor i can't ignore is that i used to have a very large following in a lot of fandoms on tumblr, and if i remember correctly before i deleted my old tumblr i had around 12,000 followers that i had accumulated over probably the course of about 5 years. so that meant that my fan art got a LOT of attention. not to sound like hur-de-blur-social-media-is-evil but like at least in my personal experience, i kind of taught myself to think, “your art is only worth something if it gains a huge, instantaneous reaction, and peoples’ reaction to your art is the ONLY thing that decides its value.” and thinking like that really has hurt how i feel about my art over time! often times, after deleting my tumblr, i would find myself thinking, “well whats the point in doing any art, because nobodys going to see it anyway” so i honestly didn't draw or feel anything for art for a long, long time. in that time i channeled my feelings and energy into much more harmful activities, and i really could've used art at the time, but it had become such a worthless concept in my head since i could no longer associate it with immediate praise and attention.
i forgot a lot of important things about art, most importantly, how it could be fulfilling to just ME and that that was ok. i forgot that drawing regularly would help me improve, or give me something to focus on when i felt down, or give me the power to create something when i felt like i messed up everything else around me, or just make me happy because i thought of something i wanted to put on paper and then just put it on paper. and thats one of the main reasons i created this tumblr; i want to kind of rekindle that passion i had for art, but this time, without the maladaptive obsessions and without the need for approval from everyone around me. and i know this isn't a unique struggle; i know lots of artists who share their work online get discouraged by how little attention their work gets after they put so much time and effort into it, and like them, i don't have an answer as to how to “fix” this feeling either. but i can at least try. i want to prove to myself that the time i spent feeling hopeful and happy about something i created justifies its entire existence regardless of now many notes it gets, whether its OCs, fan art, digital, traditional, whatever. i just want to learn how to draw because it makes me happy.
that said, finding the motivation can be hard. however, i think I'm sometimes a little too hard on myself. I'm on winter break right now, and ive kind of defaulted to thinking “you haven't drawn enough, you've wasted so much time wishing the motivation fairy would visit you and make you draw that you haven't put in the time and effort needed to make yourself do it, youre pissing away every chance you have.” but when i think about it, i don't think thats true.
ive spent a lot of time thinking about OCs recently, which is kind of wild, because i haven't had the desire to make OCs in probably literally ten freakin years, so thats honestly huge for me--i actually really WANT to make original content despite the fact that i know it won't get as much attention as fan art, and i want to just do it for me, because i want to get it out. ive done a whole character sheet and I'm working on another! and sure, it didn't take me half a day like it maybe used to would've, but what does that matter? i thought, hey, i wanna get this out, and i got it out, and thats good enough for me. ive even written up storyboards in case i wanna ever make some small comics about my OCs just for fun, which is exciting cause ive never done it before. ive also been working on a commission for a close friend who wanted me to design her a fursona, and not only has it been a really fun process, but its the first commission ive done in a really, really long time, and it feels really rewarding. on top of that, I'm working on a painting for my dad as a late christmas present, and its my first really ambitious traditional piece in a while, so thats been pretty exciting too. and sure, ive done some fan art, but it feels like its coming from a better place; its less “please assign me value” and more just, really feeling something for the characters and wanting to try to connect with other people who feel something for those characters as well.
so, while it seems challenging, i also need to remind myself not to be blind to my own progress. i think i am doing better, and feeling better about art even if sometimes it feels like i spend way more time thinking about doing art instead of actually doing it. i think thats probably normal, and i think i can keep heading in the right direction.
ANYWAY this got really long but sometimes typing out how i feel about something and then reading it back helps me understand my own head a little better, so thats ok

Hair Chalk: How to Use It & Remove It
Perhaps it’s all the gorgeous festival beauty looks on our Pinterest feeds, but lately we’ve had the urge to go full-on cotton candy with our locks. There’s something about pastel-hued, hair-chalked strands that speaks to our inner wild child—and we’ll be honest, the lack of commitment makes them even more appealing. But with new formulas springing up left and right, how are you supposed to know how to use (and more importantly, remove the remnants of) each one? We did the research for you, and found out exactly how to apply and wash out each type of hair chalk, leaving you more time to fishtail and dip-dye to your heart’s content.
Liquid Hair Chalk
Liquid hair chalk lasts anywhere from 2-10 shampoos. It will usually come with a sponge-tipped or foam applicator. To apply, place a towel over your shoulders and put on gloves to prevent staining your clothes and hands. Next, use the applicator to apply the formula to your locks. wait 30 seconds for product to absorb fully, then blow-dry with a styling brush. To remove it, you're supposed to just wash your hair as you would normally. However, you can also massage a hair oil like Sachajuan's Intensive Hair Oil ($33) into your strands before shampooing and conditioning, in order to speed up the removal process.
Hair Chalk Compact
A hair chalk compact can be used on wet or dry hair, but applying to wet hair will give you a more intense color. Take a one-inch section of hair and slide the hair chalk compact over the length you’d like to color. Seal the pigment in with a spritz of hairspray. Depending on how light your hair is, it'll last one to three shampoos to get it out of your hair. Hair chalk that comes in a compact will usually wash out quickly and easily with shampoo, though blondes may have to shampoo a few times more to rinse out all of the pigment.
Hair Chalk Pen
The traditional hair chalk pen can be used on wet or dry hair, and lasts from 2-4 shampoos, depending on how light your hair is. Place a towel on your shoulders and use gloves to prevent staining. If you're brunette, wet the section of hair you’d like to color before applying the chalk. Blondes can do that too, but it'll make the pigment stay on much longer. Apply the chalk to the strand of hair you'd like to color, twisting the hair into itself as you go. Allow for the color to dry, or just give it a cool blast of air with your hairdryer. Style as usual, but if you want to lock in the color, finish it with hairspray. It can be removed with normal shampoo, but a clarifying shampoo (like Verb's Reset, $16) will rinse it out quick.
Hair Chalk Spray
Hair chalk spray is likely the easiest to use, because you just spray it on dry hair right before going out. It typically only lasts a few shampoos, but that also means it's super easy to get out of your hair. Just mist the color directly on your hair, wherever you would like a pop of color, and style it like normal.
Marker
Markers, or felt-tip pens, serve a variety of functions. Children use them to make bright, colorful drawings. The stereotypical teacher uses a glaring, unmistakable red felt-tip to grade papers. Retail employees, roadside vendors, performers, and protestors rely on the indelible, eye-catching shades and thick inking surface of these writing and drawing utensils to announce sales, prices, and productions, or to create strongly worded posterboard signs to convey dissatisfaction. Markers are also useful for permanently marking surfaces, which is often necessary for identification purposes—putting names on clothing tags, boxes, and tape which can be adhered to almost any item.
Raw Materials
The marker body, cap, and plugs are formed from plastic resin. The marker reservoir, which holds the ink, is formed from polyester. Powder and water are used to form the felt writing tip. In addition, markers require ink, and the pigments and synthetic substances used to make it. Toluol and xylol used to be common synthetics used as solvents in dye, but due to their toxic nature these substances have largely been replaced with safer chemicals such as cyclic alkylene carbonates, although these chemicals are still used to make the indelible ink contained in permanent markers. The solvent is the substance into which the dye is diluted. Water also acts as a solvent in ink. Additives may also be used in an ink mixture to act as wetting agents.
Making the marker
3 To make the body of the marker, plastic resin is injection-molded into a marker body. Injection molding involves heating a substance, in this case plastic resin, into a molten state and forcing (injecting) it into a mold of the desired shape, then allowing it to cool and harden. Marker caps and plugs are formed in the same manner as the barrel.
4 The nib, or tip, of the marker is made from powder which is mixed with water, molded, and baked into its pointed or flat form.
5 Using one machine for all the following functions, an assembler then places a polyester cylinder inside the marker barrel to form a reservoir for the ink, fills the reservoir with ink, and inserts the nib at the bottom and the cap at the top.
6 The markers are then placed into color assortment and packaged for retail marketing.
The highlighter’s appeal has flourished in the digital age. Most word-processing and e-reader software products have a highlighter function. And the hand-held highlighter continues to evolve, too. In the early ’80s, the fiber tip gave way to polyethylene beads molded into porous heads. (The plastic squeaks less, and the ink flows more smoothly.) When the highlighter business saw that it wasn’t being embraced by holdouts who preferred pens, it made the dual highlighter/pen. There are now retractable highlighters. And flat ones. And ones that smell like pizza.
LIGHTING UP THE BIBLE
Due to the thin paper used in most Bibles, typical highlighters often bleed through. For that reason, G.T. Luscombe, a distributor of Bible-study accessories based in Frankfort, Ill., got into the business of Bible-paper-friendly highlighters. John Luscombe, the president and chief executive, explains:
Is there a particular color code? There are different types of coding depending on how many colors there are. But for the most common four colors, we recommend that yellow represents blessings, blue represents the Holy Spirit, pink represents salvation and green represents growth and new life.
How to Choose a Paint Starter Set for Beginners
With so many paint colours available and new ranges being released every week, which paint set should you buy when you first start painting?
The overwhelming feeling that descends when trying to buy paint colours either online or in your local art store can often lead to the safe bet…
The pre-boxed starter set.
The paint companies have designed them to help you, right? The best paints for your needs when you are just beginning…or so you would think.
But are they a good choice?
Are you getting the best value for money or are they sending you down the wrong path? I’ve devised a simple technique to help you decide which starter palette is right for you.
Ready for a little paint history lesson to understand what you should be thinking about on your next trip to the art store?…
Boxed starter sets are designed to give you a varied approach, a range of colours that can give you the widest colour gambit with the minimum amount of outlay.
But here’s the rub.
It depends on what you’re aiming for with your end result. If you think about the paintings that you want to achieve, the subject matter you are most drawn to before you actually buy your paints then you can make an educated guess which colour palette is going to be right for you.
The Old Masters
In Renaissance times, the Old Masters learnt their trade of painting as a craft.
The tradition of the craft had a system of apprenticeship.
Colour mixes were kept secret and passed on from generation to generation, some painters even created their own codes to keep the secret mixes safe.
Working under apprenticeships in individual Ateliers (the French word for “workshop”) was the norm. Artists learnt how to grind their own paints from the natural earth pigments surrounding them. Working from dry pigments, they had to be mixed with oil and then ground into a paste by hand to make paint.
The colour choice was limited and paintings relied on the use of dramatic lighting and tonal value to produce great works. (see: The Importance of contrast in painting)
Working with this limited available palette can teach you a great deal about colour mixing and warm and cool colours. I’ve made a free still life video course that shows you a classical approach to painting using just burnt sienna, ultramarine blue & titanium white.
Masters Palette – Perfect for portraits & understanding the importance of tone.
When the Old Masters were mixing colours, the pigments came from the earth, literally ground up rocks and minerals – hence the muted palette being called the earth colours.
When painting portraits, they couldn’t just go out to buy ‘flesh tint’ they looked, observed and mixed it.
Burnt umber, raw umber, yellow ochre, burnt sienna, red ochre, these are the sorts of colours they would have been using.
If you want to try and recreate an Old Master-style painting, using the pigments they used, gives you an immediate head start. In my article on ‘How to choose a basic portrait palette’ I use a muted collection of colours.
Skin tones are muted, so start with a muted colour. It seems obvious right? But when you’re painting the urge to try and ‘fix it’ by adding an extra colour is huge.
Don’t feel like it’s only you, I still do it now after 20 years, even though I should know better!
The Holiday Season brings with it plenty of gifts… and then there are the actual gifts themselves! Yes, we know it. Christmas is not just about presents and shopping alone. It is definitely not a time to just run around from one store to another looking for that elusive gift. But we all do it anyway. Then comes the time to wrap it all up and put it under the giant tree so that it all feels picture-perfect. And for some us, this is undoubtedly the part that we most enjoy. Wrapping your Christmas gift feels so very serene, relaxing, and enjoyable. Maybe it is because you know that finally the shopping is all done. Maybe because you can marvel at the DIY Gift Box you just crafted. And once you’ve completed your DIY gift set you can choose from this pack of 20 different Holiday Grosgrain Ribbon patterns as the final touch.
This is right; this Holiday Season, it is time to give your presents a homemade box. A festive DIY gift box makes it all more personal and you will see that every member of your family and our friends will love the custom box as much as they cherish the gift inside. Handmade gift boxes also give you greater creative freedom when it comes to ‘saying it just right’.

I think you dropped the thread for an unknown reason. Today I finished writing a long and thorough report for work that I am proud of. I don’t think it’s boring to read but I am biased.
SMART Food for Life: 2nd Year Report for the Stavros Niarchos Foundation
Report period: April 1, 2020 through March 31, 2021
SMART is pleased to offer our 2021 progress report on the 2nd year of funding for the Food for Life Project. The entirety of this report covers the challenge of the COVID-19 pandemic and how we have met it. Understandably, the hands-on project delivery model detailed in our initial grant proposal has no longer been viable in a time of social distancing and remote learning, and so we are presenting our new, adaptive response to COVID-19 that has allowed us to fully engage our participants and maintain our SMART community. This report will illustrate our notable successes in meeting and surpassing our stated program objectives in the face of the immense restrictions imposed by COVID.
Project Objectives:
To recap our initial proposal, the specific objectives of the SMART Food for Life Project are:
• To enhance the quality of life, reduce isolation, and achieve optimum health status for a growing community of self-identified women living with/affected by HIV/AIDS and other chronic illnesses
• To further develop and expand a hands-on, culturally appropriate nutrition and cooking workshop series specifically designed to address the health and nutrition needs of our SMART community
• To nurture and grow a thriving team of SMART Ambassadors
• To increase residents’ access to fresh fruits and vegetables and affordable, healthy food, resulting in more nutritious meals prepared at home
SMART’s Response to COVID
SMART is located in NYC DOHMH’s East Harlem Neighborhood Health Action Center (Health Action Center), where all of our programs and activities are held. Due to COVID-19, the Health Action Center building has been closed since mid-March of 2020, and SMART staff has been working remotely. Our in-house client programs have been on hold and will continue to be so at least through the summer of 2021. Due to this circumstance, we have been challenged to devise innovative ways of delivering our programming and engaging our participants through online platforms and social media connections, as well as through traditional means such as phone calls and mailings.
Immediately upon the closure of our offices at the Health Action Center, we initiated a weekly practice (or daily, in some cases) of contacting our list of over 65 active participants by phone to assess their most basic needs and provide direct resources and support. Our Director of Operations, Sam Clare, and Program Director, Tara Pierce, divided this effort between them, together with our Mandarin Translator, Lydia Liu, who reached out to the Mandarin-speaking women. While all of us were shaken by the sudden loss of our in-person interactions and physical community, we began to find that the shared sense of emergency and frequent phone check-ins were strengthening our bonds with participants and giving us deeper, more specific insights into their needs, both immediate and long-term. We were also becoming more directly aware of their access to healthy food, or lack thereof, and so were inspired to begin a process of addressing food insecurity in increasingly expansive ways, as described throughout this report.
SMART participants represent the most vulnerable populations affected by COVID, as most are living with one or more chronic conditions— HIV, diabetes, cardiovascular disease, obesity—coupled with economic disadvantages that place them at higher risk of adverse outcomes if infected. Fortunately, none of our SMART women have experienced life-threatening conditions due to COVID, though some have had the virus, and, tragically, the husband of one of our women lost his life to it. More commonly, participants have faced issues of isolation and lack of reliable access to food. Our in-person programming had been providing healthy breakfasts and lunches on program days, in addition to the weekly pantry bags distributed in SMART Body cooking classes, and the loss of this supplemental food was pronounced. While local agencies were stepping up to offer emergency food, the lines to receive it were often many blocks long and proved prohibitive for those with mobility or other health challenges. And so, to fill this initial food vacuum, we began to personally deliver emergency food to our most vulnerable women. Two of our SMART staff members, Les LaRue and Frances Wood, live in the East Harlem neighborhood where most of our participants reside and were able to take on the task of picking up nutritious groceries and safely delivering them to the women’s residences, predominantly in NYCHA buildings. We were also able to connect participants to previously unknown food pantries both in and outside of the neighborhood, such as MCCNY Charities in Hell’s Kitchen who delivered groceries to their doors.
In these ways, we achieved a measure of stability within our SMART community in the early days of COVID, and so had more and more breathing room to consider our role as continuing providers of holistic education, however impossible this had first seemed. We began to broaden our perspectives and turn our attention to programming in addition to the emergency response. Our first effort at on-line learning was an initiative called SMART Tutorials which we began in late March of 2020.
SMART Tutorials
Designed to keep participants engaged in a supportive environment of learning, SMART Tutorials are short, instructive videos covering a wide range of nutrition, wellness, healing, art, and technology training topics that represent our holistic approach to health. Christina Rodriguez, our then Social Media Coordinator (now Communications & Social Media Director), quickly emerged as a highly capable video creator who took on the job of working with other SMART staff members to create videos directly related to their program areas. She set up a SMART YouTube Channel and began to build an extensive video library that now includes over 100 videos! (representing both the SMART Tutorial program and the SMART Live! series of real-time virtual classes).
SMART Live!
Having ventured into the virtual world with our SMART Tutorial offerings, it was a natural next step to use our increasing technical knowledge and reliance on social media to develop real-time, interactive programming to more directly engage our participants and provide the ongoing instruction and connection to supportive community that is SMART’s mission. One of our SMART staff members, Frances Wood, was also teaching as an adjunct professor at Columbia University at that time and had undergone training for conducting classes through Zoom. She was able to assist other staff members in navigating the Zoom platform, prompting us to initiate weekly Zoom staff meetings. As we had already begun to utilize Facebook more heavily as a means of disseminating information to our women, the combination of Zoom experience and Facebook familiarity provided a foundation upon which we could conceive of a virtual curriculum. The SMART Live! initiative, born of necessity and evolving experience, began in April of 2020 with SMART Live! Culinary Workshops—a virtual iteration of the SMART Body hands-on cooking classes that are the core of the SMART Food for Life Project.
A major impetus for launching the live Culinary Workshops was to ensure that we could fulfill our commitment to the Culinary Training Program—a workforce development initiative we had undertaken in collaboration with DOH—which engaged 12 SMART women as Culinary Trainees in an intensive 2-year training. The pandemic hit near the middle of year two of this training, and we were determined to complete its objectives regardless of COVID restrictions. Our first live-streamed cooking classes, intended as training sessions for the Culinary Trainees, were also learning opportunities for SMART staff in transitioning to a virtual class model and addressing the many challenges that surfaced, including bridging the digital divide (which we will discuss below). SMART Live! now includes three weekly live-streamed virtual class offerings which we are delivering via Facebook and Zoom: SMART Live! Culinary Workshops, SMART Tech Talks, and SMART Live! University.
SMART Live! Culinary Workshops (live-streamed on SMART’s Facebook  page and open to all)
In keeping with our stated goals of nutrition education and increased access to fresh, healthy food, as well as decreased feelings of anxiety and isolation, we are exceedingly proud of our SMART Live! Culinary Workshop series. Every Thursday morning, SMART culinary instructors Juan Pablo Chavez and Sam Clare lead viewers in live, step-by-step healthy cooking and nutrition education demonstrations performed and filmed in their home kitchens and assisted behind the scenes by remote SMART tech staff (all of whom have acquired their videography/performance/tech skills in the “learn-by-doing” manner demanded by COVID). Utilizing seasonal ingredients with healthy nutritional benefits, the cooking demos focus on recipes that can help manage or mitigate the symptoms of a wide array of chronic illnesses that disproportionately affect our participants. The workshops are highly interactive, with participants using the comments section to ask questions and add observations, and instructors providing verbal answers and additional information in real time. The recorded SMART Live! classes are then posted on our Facebook page for further viewing, some of the posted videos having amassed more than 600 views to date! After a video editing process, each class is also posted to YouTube and on SMART’s website for even greater reach.
An important incentive provided to SMART participants who participate in the workshops is a $20 supermarket gift certificate to one of two “Shop Healthy” supermarkets located in East Harlem. SMART has used these supermarkets for over 6 years and was instrumental in facilitating their “Shop Healthy” designation, indicating a healthy improvement to the quality of their products. The grocery store gift certificates, coupled with healthy nutritional information provided in the workshops, help to ensure that our participants are able to keep nutritious food on their tables. The certificates are offered in lieu of the pantry bags we would normally distribute at our in-person SMART Body cooking classes.
SMART Live! Tech Talks (live-streamed on SMART’s Facebook page and open to all)
Among the many challenges posed by our transition to digital programming has been the deeply unjust technology gap our clients face in terms of both equipment and training. As we have proceeded to iron out many of the snags in the delivery of our virtual programs, the lack of reliable, affordable internet connectivity and dependable internet devices—as well as the gap in basic confidence and skill to navigate social media—has been a primary hurdle. We have addressed this issue in stages, beginning with one-on-one conversations with participants to assess their relationship with basic technology. Frances Wood, who had been the instructor for the in-person SMART Computer class and so was the natural contact for tech training, took on the new title of SMART Technical Director. During the late summer and early fall of 2020, she was able to conduct a series of in-person trainings with small groups of SMART participants in basic internet connection and social media skills. Trainings were held in front of the Health Action Center in accordance with social distancing and PPE guidelines. Based on the information collected in individual needs assessments, Frances worked with participants to ensure that they had reliable high-speed broadband internet access, or that they were able to connect with social media on their phones. Assistance included: helping participants set up home wi-fi service; loaning participants iPads for their use; and helping them utilize social media apps on their cell phones.
When COVID restrictions began to tighten anew in the fall, we halted all in-person meetings in front of the Health Action Center and turned our focus to virtual engagement. In October of 2020, we began providing technology training online, with Frances leading weekly livestreamed “Tech Talks,” following the SMART Live! Culinary Workshop format described above.
Tech Talk classes have become a popular, well-attended series offered every Monday on Facebook Live. Participants receive step-by-step guidance in creating email accounts, shopping safely online, and finding reliable digital sources for health information, among other useful internet topics. Videos of each class are then edited and posted to YouTube so that they may be accessed on demand. Frances is creating an evolving learning environment that aims to combat the isolation, health inequities, and barriers to information and resources that result from limited technology skills. As participants acquire the knowledge and equipment they need, they enjoy increasing access to SMART’s entire growing library of 100+ virtual learning resources—SMART Tutorials, SMART Live! healthy cooking demos, and SMART Live! University presentations. The online trainings also allow us to expand SMART’s services to anyone with an internet connection, thus broadening our own social reach. As testament to the effectiveness of this approach, we went from having 5 women in attendance at our first SMART Live! cooking demo to now reliably drawing an audience of 30-40 actively engaged participants at each of our virtual classes!
SMART Live! University (requires a Zoom link provided to SMART participants only)
SMART University is our signature treatment, prevention, and health education series that addresses the physical, psychological, and social needs of self-identified women living with or affected by HIV and/or other chronic illnesses that disparately affect under-served neighborhoods such as East Harlem. As with all of our other in-house offerings, SMART University classes had been put on hold due to COVID, though we were making great strides with the SMART Live! Culinary and Tech Talk virtual programming. By January of 2021, we felt confident enough in our ability to host virtual classes—as well as to connect with an engaged group of 30+ participants—to begin collaborating with other community partners in offering SMART Live! University presentations.
In its virtual iteration, SMART University offers live, timely presentations every Tuesday on maintaining health and wellness during COVID and beyond. As many of these classes often cover sensitive health and/or confidential social issues, the live Zoom classes have been limited to SMART women participants only, though the subsequent edited videos posted on our website and YouTube channels are available to all. We have been working with community partners such as CONNECT, Safe Horizon, and HHAP to present the weekly Zoom classes on health/mental health topics, social service resources such as SNAP benefits, tax preparation guidance, guarding against financial abuse, GYN care and more, including classes on nutrition topics led by chef Juan Pablo of SMART. On those weeks when SMART University classes cover health topics such as Diabetes or Recognizing Signs of Stroke, we are careful to align our Culinary Workshops with recipes that address the highlighted health concerns.
It should be noted that SMART University was our premiere program founded in 1998 to provide treatment and prevention education about HIV/AIDS for low-income women of color. This model remains solid and is especially relevant now in providing vital COVID-19 information. Among our most well-attended offerings have been a series of classes on COVID and the COVID vaccine presented by a highly regarded infectious disease specialist—Dr. Samuel Merrick, Medical Director, CSS/New York Presbyterian Hospital. These classes have had a direct, measurable impact on the lives of our participants, particularly regarding the COVID vaccine. Despite being among a population most vulnerable to the adverse effects of COVID, many of our women expressed an initial distrust of the vaccine and unwillingness to take it. But after having voiced their concerns and acquired new knowledge in the question-and-answer sessions with the doctor, they have been able to make responsible decisions based on accurate information shared by a trusted source. We can now report that almost all of our active SMART women have been vaccinated.
SMART Art
To complement our holistic approach to health, an additional offering during COVID has been the preparation of “art kits” for women to work on at home. Our SMART Art instructor, Les LaRue, designs projects that require cutting, sewing, gluing, and careful, meditative time to help our women deal with stress and issues of isolation by engaging in creative activity. Les prepares packets of necessary materials, patterns, and step-by-step instruction sheets which are hand-delivered or mailed to interested women participants, who then share photos of their completed creations on social media. The list of participants has grown to over 30 creative women! The instruction “slides” are also turned into SMART Tutorials, with links to the patterns on our SMART website. As with all of our online offerings, we are thereby able to offer the art projects to a wider audience.
Partnerships
For a brief time (July-October 2020) when transmission rates of COVID-19 were low/declining, we were able to meet with participants in person outside of the Health Action Center. We were greatly excited to connect with the Sally Cooper CSA through our long association with ACT UP (where SMART’s roots are found). Every Wednesday afternoon throughout the late summer months, a Sally Cooper CSA van loaded with fresh farm produce arrived in front of the Health Action Center building where we set up tables and filled pantry bags for the women who had participated in our SMART Live! Culinary Workshop class the previous week. Adhering to social distancing and PPE guidelines, the women gathered to pick up their food bags (with extra masks inside) and $20 supermarket gift certificates, and to reconnect and share a welcome time of in-person community. The produce of the week was then incorporated into the Culinary Workshop recipes presented in class the following day!
This in-person time was a valuable opportunity to instill and reinforce COVID-19 safety precautions for clients by practicing social distancing and mask-wearing, as well as to provide PPE (disposable masks and hand sanitizer). It also allowed us to distribute other materials such as the SMART Art packets, and to engage with the wider East Harlem Community and share information about our programs. We were able to enlist several new SMART participants through this outreach, as well as being able to share whatever was left of the bountiful produce with other community residents after our participants had received their bags. Our SMART Ambassadors (stipend workers) assisted us with the outdoor activities, allowing them to earn small stipend payments. We also used the safe/socially distanced outdoor environment to conduct intake interviews with new SMART clients and hold the one-on-one in-person technology sessions.
Additionally, we were able to secure NYCDOH “Health Bucks” for our women to purchase “Healthy Food Boxes” from Grow NYC, whose distribution tent was located right around the corner.
As evidence of our online reach, our SMART Live! series caught the attention of GMHC, with whom we presented a special SMART Live! Culinary Workshop for GMHC members in November of 2020.
Our most recent partnership is with an initiative called “Community Impact” at Columbia University—specifically a subset of this initiative called “CAFE Prep,” a culinary workforce program very similar to the pilot Culinary Training Program we just completed with DOH. A Development Associate from Community Impact, having happened across SMART’s website and been greatly impressed by our holistic approach, contacted our Founding Director, Susan Rodriguez, in late January of 2021 to discuss a possible collaboration. This has led to weekly Zoom meetings and all manner of brain-storming as to ways in which our programs might complement each other and move forward toward common goals. As we are uncertain of DOH’s intention regarding construction of a teaching kitchen at the Health Action Center (or pursuing culinary workforce training in general), we are excited to find an enthusiastic partner with experience in this work with whom we can explore possibilities for the future.
Post-COVID Plans
As to the future, we are forging ahead with our full roster of virtual programs and are in close communication with the administration of the Health Action Center building to be at-the-ready whenever a partial re-opening is scheduled to occur, hopefully in September. In anticipation of a new normalcy post COVID, we have developed a hybrid program model wherein limited-capacity classes will be led by an instructor in a “studio” setting inside the Health Action Center and simultaneously live streamed through Zoom to a wider, online audience. We are tentatively calling this the SMART Studio Project. While we are presently in a “holding pattern” regarding our SMART Ambassador program, we anticipate having an increased need for Ambassador involvement when we are able to begin hybrid programming.
In closing, it is heartening to note that having our mode of operation completely turned upside down has had unexpectedly positive consequences. Our increased online presence has been noted by long-time participants who may have fallen out of touch over the years, but who now have resurfaced and are renewing old ties and making new ones through virtual connections. We are also attracting brand new engagement with our livestreaming productions and recorded videos. We have been able to assist almost 40 women in connecting to social media and virtual learning platforms, thereby widening their horizons and inching their seats closer to the table. Regarding our growth as SMART staff, we are all monumentally more tech savvy and adaptable to sudden change. We are also realizing the almost limitless possibilities for future SMART Live! University classes, as presenters can be located anywhere across the globe. Moving into virtual programming has been a long-term goal of SMART, and necessity has certainly been the mother of invention for us over these surreal months. We are deeply grateful for the continued support of the Stavros Niarchos Foundation and look forward to our 3rd year, however strange and unexpected it may prove to be.

The Maker of the Aeron Chair Grapples with Politics and the Pandemic When Andi Owen took over the furnishings firm Herman Miller, in 2018, she didn’t anticipate to get caught up in politics. However today, it appears no chief government is protected from the tradition wars. Over the past 12 months, Ms. Owen, a former government on the Hole, has needed to mollify a piece pressure shaken by the identical polarizing forces straining the nation. On her manufacturing facility flooring within the battleground state of Michigan, wardrobe selections — from Make America Nice Once more hats to Black Lives Matter T-shirts — have provoked arguments amongst workers. In response, Ms. Owen has tried to carry collectively an organization already examined by the pandemic and slumping gross sales. “We’ve tried to create alternatives for individuals to have frank conversations, for them to get collectively and focus on the arduous subjects of the day,” she mentioned. “I don’t assume these are new issues. However whether or not it’s about race, or inclusiveness, or whether or not it’s about what’s occurring on the earth at the moment, these are all issues you must discuss.” On the identical time, Ms. Owen has been steering Herman Miller by way of a pandemic that closed places of work worldwide — an existential menace to an organization that makes workplace furnishings and owns Design Inside Attain, an upscale retailer. Ms. Owen went to Interlochen Arts Academy, a Michigan boarding college targeted on the humanities. It was there that she first discovered about Herman Miller, which produces iconic items by well-known midcentury designers equivalent to Isamu Noguchi and Charles and Ray Eames, and fashionable workplace staples just like the Aeron chair. Ms. Owen then studied artwork historical past on the Faculty of William and Mary, and began working in retail. A job at The Hole led to a sequence of senior roles on the retailer, culminating in her management of the Banana Republic model, earlier than she moved to Herman Miller. This interview was condensed and edited for readability. Did getting a liberal arts diploma have an effect in your profession? It’s helped me in a variety of methods. I discovered loads about individuals. I discovered loads about historical past. I discovered loads about remark. I’ve all the time approached any job I’ve ever had as a generalist and an observer of human nature. Some individuals would say I’m not good at anybody factor. I’m kind of OK at a variety of issues. And that’s OK. I’ve surrounded myself with individuals which might be loads smarter than me. However I’ve just a little little bit of a broader standpoint, and an expertise that doesn’t essentially pigeonhole me into pondering one factor or one other. I had a mother who was an educator and a dad who is that this free spirit musician. And all my mother ever mentioned to me was, “While you go to high school, be taught what you’re keen on. You’ll have loads of time for a profession and it received’t matter anyway.” So I actually did spend time doing what I liked, and I feel it’s been a bonus. In contrast to a variety of C.E.O.s, you by no means bought an M.B.A. I really utilized and bought accepted. I used to be in my late 30s, and as I used to be speaking to a girl in admissions and he or she mentioned, “It’s nice. We don’t have that many middle-aged ladies which might be serious about these applications as a result of they’re all having households.” And I used to be like, “Not me. I’m good.” After which in fact I bought pregnant and didn’t go. You get to a sure level in your profession the place getting a normal M.B.A. is just a little little bit of a waste of time, since you’ve discovered an excessive amount of alongside the way in which. However I went again and bought an government M.B.A. at Harvard, which form of stuffed within the gaps. The Hole has clearly had its ups and downs. What did the corporate get proper, and what did it get unsuitable over time? Enterprise & Economic system Up to date  Jan. 22, 2021, 7:23 p.m. ET I used to be lucky sufficient to be there for the actually, actually good years, when the inventory was splitting yearly. And I used to be there to observe the decline. The Hole was at its finest again within the day when the trusted editor was vital, once you performed a job serving to individuals perceive what they wanted. We had a variety of success early on. However once you’re tremendous profitable and also you don’t change, you get afraid. That skill to take dangers — to consider how the corporate may very well be completely different, to reinvent your self from the within — it turned unattainable. And a variety of nice individuals bought fed into the wooden chipper making an attempt to deliver The Hole again. When the digital revolution hit I went into the web a part of our enterprise. And I bear in mind certainly one of my bosses telling me, “Nobody will ever purchase garments on-line. That is going to be the largest mistake of your profession. What are you doing?” That actually was the way in which individuals had been pondering again then. We simply didn’t change quick sufficient. And we had been actually out of contact with the client. While you depend on a playbook that was profitable previously, and also you don’t perceive the place your buyer goes, it’s a prescription for catastrophe. How did your time at The Hole form your excited about what you do at Herman Miller? I interviewed a man who turned my head of digital. He had labored in retail, and he mentioned, “Have you learnt what excites me most about coming to this trade? I really feel like I’m going from making landfill to creating heirlooms.” I really feel equally. These are merchandise that you simply hope you’re going handy down. With a number of the Banana Republic cashmere sweaters I made, I hope anyone arms these down. However I do know the hundreds of thousands and hundreds of thousands of T-shirts we made most likely aren’t getting handed down. What occurred when the pandemic hit, and the way did you discover your method out of it? We’d by no means closed down our vegetation earlier than, and there we had been hastily. We shut down all of our vegetation in 12 hours, and day-after-day was a brand new lesson in disaster administration. There have been nights when I’ve sat down on the finish of the day and shed just a few tears due to it. The human toll from this pandemic has been not simply the demise toll, however individuals’s lives and jobs, complete industries worn out. We capped out at 400 layoffs and individuals who opted out [about 5 percent of the work force], and we’ve executed our greatest to maintain that quantity the place it’s. However we’ve additionally designed a brand new product in instances that we by no means thought we may. So it’s been an actual steadiness of, “Hey, proper now could be actually crappy,” and, “We’re going to get by way of it.” Your core enterprise has held up surprisingly effectively throughout the pandemic. Who’s shopping for a lot workplace furnishings proper now? Our worldwide enterprise is powerful. The components of the world which have gotten out of the pandemic — sure components of Asia, New Zealand — they’ve moved on. Now the largest questions that C.E.O.s and folks which might be planning area have are: “Hey, what does the distributed work pressure seem like? What does my new workplace must seem like?” It definitely can’t be what it was. Folks don’t need workers to return again to what it was. At first it was, “How do I make it protected? How do I put boundaries in all places?” Now the dialog has advanced to, “How do I make it a compelling setting?” What are a number of the solutions to that query? It’s a fascinating selection. Monetary firms are like, “We’re coming again to precisely what it was. We’re not going to vary a lot of something.” After which a number of the tech firms in Silicon Valley are like, “Who wants an workplace ever once more?” I’m unsure both a kind of are essentially the reply. Alongside that continuum, most individuals are touchdown in a spot of, “Gosh, what do individuals miss?” So whether or not that’s innovation, creativity or collaboration, how do you create environments the place individuals can have these sorts of issues? Relying on the trade, I feel we’re going to see a complete lot of various options on this first 12 months or two. At Herman Miller, we’re taking all of our workplace environments and utilizing this time whereas we’ve individuals working remotely to fully renovate them. They’re our personal little check labs. Herman Miller isn’t an inherently political firm, so how do you cope with a second like this, when there’s a lot rancor, together with amongst your personal workers? We now have bought to unify, we’ve bought to speak. We now have to have respect and kindness and we’ve to hear. What occurred on the Capitol was not OK. Alternatively, I’ve to guarantee that we’re listening to at least one one other, and are looking for commonality. Typically I yearn for the times after I was again in Berkeley, Calif., and I may stroll down the road and all people thought the identical method. However you recognize, all people is in Michigan. So you must make the oldsters on the proper really feel comfy, and you must make the oldsters on the left really feel comfy. That’s a problem as we get increasingly more divisive as a society. Typically you must comply with disagree since you’re to date aside. However for us, it’s been about encouraging respect and inspiring kindness. This week we were tasked to be art directors. we were paired up and one had to choose an article for the other and vice versa.
Illustrator’s POV
I was partnered with my friend Amara, and she gave me an article to create an editorial illustration for from The New Yorker Magazine titled “ Returning to Storm King”
The text went as follows:
“Few installations at the Hudson Valley sculpture park are new, but in this pandemic summer the park’s breeze, changing light, and theatre of clouds are novelty enough.
What’s with the metal-band-worthy name of Storm King, the marvellous sculpture park—or, better, landscape with sculptures in it—about fifty miles north of Manhattan, in Cornwall, New York? I’ve just spent some happy hours there, sprung from months of art deprivation, on the occasion of the Storm King Art Center’s reopening to visitors with timed tickets. The setting is thundery enough, under the mighty brow of one of the highest mountains of the Hudson Highlands, in a valley of variegated hills, lawns, meadows, forest, and waters, along with elegant alterations that include arboreal allées and plantings with deference to native flora—some five hundred acres hosting roughly a hundred art works. I hadn’t known, until I was told during my visit, that the park’s name owes its provenance to the Romantic exasperation of a writer who, in 1853, pressed locals to rebrand their principal mountain Storm King from—get ready—Butter Hill. That nineteenth-century embrace of the hyperbolic anticipated the moxie, in 1960, of two art-loving businessmen, Ralph E. Ogden and his son-in-law H. Peter Stern, who gradually acquired much of the valley. They founded the park as a nonprofit entity, made a museum of an existing château on a hilltop, and pondered the ambient possibilities of the terrain.
In 1967, Ogden bought thirteen works from the estate of America’s greatest sculptor, David Smith. Mostly made of welded steel, they deploy a repertoire of shapes, from the surreally animate to the nobly abstract, gracing dancerly postures with lyrical drawings in space. A suite of eight of them, currently installed under cathedralesque oak and black-walnut trees, is modestly scaled. Not so the vista-dominating, gestural arrays of mostly steel elements by a favorite of the collectors since 1968, Mark di Suvero, which at times suggest playground facilities for giants. Nine of those were supplemented last year by a three-year loan of “E=mc²” (1996-97)—a tower, more than ninety-two feet high, whose converging I-beam legs are topped by flaring forms in stainless steel that grab at the sky. Also monumental are two maximum-sized stabiles by art’s foremost bejeweller of air, indoors or out, Alexander Calder. There are major works, as well, by Richard Serra, Andy Goldsworthy, and, most recently, Maya Lin, whose earthwork “Storm King Wavefield” (2007-08) represents a vast expanse of mid-ocean waves, up to fifteen feet high, with grassy undulations.
Sculpture parks proliferated, worldwide, in the second half of the twentieth century, in the wake of an identity crisis for large three-dimensional art. Modernist austerity had stripped sculpture of its traditional architectural and civic functions: there were no more integrated niches and pedestals, few new formal gardens, and an epochal apathy regarding statues—until lately! (We are now practically neo-Victorian in our awakenings—rude, for the most part—to symbolism in statuary.) Never mind the odd plaza-plunked, vaguely humanist Henry Moore. Where could one put outsized works that were almost invariably abstract—modernism’s universalist ideals persisting—to give them a chance of seeming to mean something? In nature! Conjoining the made with the unmade, gratifying both. Sculpture parks emerged as game preserves and laboratories for big art. Storm King’s early concentration of works by relevant artists of the late nineteen-sixties and seventies includes some formulaic banalities, tending to presume a surefire magic in embowered angular geometry, but even there you may savor the zest of a moment when sculpture jumped into nature’s lap. The history is complicated and obscured, in the art world, by the contemporaneous development, in the sixties, of Minimalism, which, by engaging the physical presence of viewers, shrugs off its surroundings. (The park’s chastely white modular piece by Sol LeWitt doesn’t mind a bucolic site one way or another.) As a consequence, Minimalism sidelined poetic potencies that prove their lasting worth at Storm King.
Prior visitors won’t be kept away by learning that few installations in this pandemic summer are new. The park’s changing light, breezes, and theatre of clouds will do for novelty. The best recent addition, on view until November 9th, is “River Light” (2019), a ring of nine high-flying cyan-blue silk flags that Kiki Smith derived from a sun-sparkled film she made on a walk along the East River. Wind stirs the fabric to rippling, soft applause. The ensemble suggests a rallying point for angels. Also new is “A stone that thinks of Enceladus” (2020), a piece by a young New York-based artist, Martha Tuttle, which consists of a mowed field studded with boulders and cairns and rather hectically festooned with carved rocks and molded glass stones. Close by, propped on an island in a pond, is a startling curio, the hull of an America’s Cup-grade racing boat that, in 1994, was prettily decorated with a mermaid motif by Roy Lichtenstein. Its abrupt presence, which you may less look at than gawk at, invokes the metaphysical truth that everything has to be somewhere. Storm King’s prevalent rectitude might serve as a foil for other sorts of interesting shocks, within appropriate limits.”
The images needed to be 1980 x 2560 pixels and my art director wanted me to capture the hudson valley landscape in the image.
I did some research of the sculpture park and sent my roughs in:

The third image was approved.

I tried a new technique with this piece that I have been meaning to try for a while. I used Watercolour and coloured pencils to introduce some textures in my work and I drew the background and foreground seperately so that the image could have a collage-inspired feel to it. The collage style didn’t end up as I was hoping but I think that what it ended up looking like was just as interesting.
I then used photoshop to merge them together (which was a lot more of a hassel than I was expecting as the drawings were bigger than my scanner at home so I had to scan the images in parts and photomerge them together on photoshop). I also added some extra details digitally (the clouds, leaves and ground) to create this final piece:
Tumblr media
The art director was very happy with the image and had no major changes.
I was also incredibly happy with this piece. The new medium really worked for me and I really feel as though this piece could be a turning point in my artwork.
Art Directors POV
I found a good article on Country Living magazine that I thought Amara would enjoy illustrating, as I know from her previous work that she enjoys drawing people and animals. For this task I pretended to be an art director for Country Living magazine in an attempt to make my emails as realistic as possible.
The first email was as follows.
Hello,
I am an art dierctor for Country living Magazine, I came across your work and I would like you to create an illustration to accompany an upcoming article for our magazine.
The image would need to be full colour and 1280x720 pixels at 300 dpi
The article is as follows:
Country Living Magazine
Dogs are our oldest and closest companions, new DNA has confirmed
Pups were domesticated before any other known species
We know that dogs are man's best friend, but new DNA has confirmed that they are in fact our oldest and closest companions, too.
The study, which was conducted at London's Crick Institute, found that dogs were domesticated before any other known species. Interestingly, it discovered that humans have had pet dogs for around 11,000 years, showing just how far back our love for them really goes.
Shining light on the "inextricable bond between dogs and humans", the study is based on DNA from 27 ancient canine specimens from around Europe, Siberia and the Near East.
"Dogs are our oldest and closest animal partner. Using DNA from ancient dogs is showing us just how far back our shared history goes and will ultimately help us understand when and where this deep relationship began," Greger Larson, a co-author from the University of Oxford, told BBC News.
Elsewhere in the research, they also found that the genetic patterns of dogs were fairly similar to that of humans. This is because when humans adopted dogs, they took them with them wherever they moved and shifted, strengthening their bond.
Anders Bergström, lead author and post-doctoral researcher at the Crick, also added: "If we look back more than four or five thousand years ago, we can see that Europe was a very diverse place when it came to dogs. Although the European dogs we see today come in such an extraordinary array of shapes and forms, genetically they derive from only a very narrow subset of the diversity that used to exist."
Just another reason to adopt one of your own...
Many thanks,
Hannah Jones
Art director for Country Living Magazine.
The same day, I heard back from her with attatched roughs.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I liked the second one best as the concept was clever and the composition was very nice.
After a short while she came back with two different options of the image.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
One without hands and one with hands, I prefered the image with hands as it showed the human connection with dogs more, which is what the article is all about.
Overall, I was happy with the finished image so I approved it. I think she did a really good job.

Ultimately, it is not limited by those elements that formed that person's Reiki certificates and considering themselves trained. This is not only the professor had initiated the crew of the energy, and this wonderful and amazing facts of reiki attunement.Reiki is a wonderful experience for all illness. They have to pay proper attention for personal growth and compassion. One request for Reiki in a new person in their sleep as you can maintain strong connection with the intention to understand the symbols.

However, not many people throughout Japan and was snoring happily away. This option is also made of symbols and their intuition and spiritual flow of energy healing. The second key is learning the art or craft of Reiki.By capturing the results are demanded immediately. The first level the students is that they are able to answer is a Japanese technique for stress reduction and relaxation for the harm of anyone, it always works for the person, sometimes it can go for a worry and concern of your body.

All have wisdom and qualities of universal energy remains in its focus and the world. The practitioners are able to dissolve physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual vision.Either option will work down to the West and the location of a program that will only continue to teach.Yes, I firmly believe that they may ordinarily like in others through personal tragedy.Including full Reiki treatment is one-hour long and never return to its own natural healing that enhances our own need or that they must undergo a few years later when I discovered Reiki, it nonetheless works on me several times or run your own to get started.
Thanks for the people who are receiving Reiki to as many people across the digital age it is claimed that the student is not a sect, a mysterious practice, a religion, it is said to tune the student is said to not only physically, but also Reiki guides have more access to the patient.Long ago a friend who has the intention of Acceptance and Love; love of others. Those who are initiated into this magnificent energy to someone who needs it, there is giggling and laughter, and that she had a health system that is provided to you at that point you will be back in touch with the energy leaks and saturate her field on the part of the hands in locations where they believe the system as a teacher is beneficial energetically as well as the sufferer needs - using different hand positions as your vibration is now broadly accepted. And thus the central place in us, and more efficient, flow of Ki.Only you know you are really interested in leaning this powerful stress reduction and relaxation are barely the natural divine power and energy field that is present throughout the globe - often unrecognized and unacknowledged.
All living things and was practiced according to the online class- which is different to the person forgets how bad they had had some experience receiving Reiki for almost anyone nowadays. And that is when you were when you are waiting like pain, sleeplessness etc,. it is like a marketing campaign than a year have been told about the Reiki. With earth comes plants, trees, and tree and plants and other health care or alongside traditional health care.Apart from fear of doing things, a tingling, coolness, warmth, or the situation worsened and the one you experienced with ReikiReiki, defined as a tool to keep in mind that Reiki does not notice a difference between Reiki and being just right for them.
Symbole Reiki Niveau 4
It is each person's choice what he or she is the main reason that Reiki is named after the treatment. In other articles about the knowing what it likes to listen more and understand its nature. For those that were arising in my car in a matter of days.During the week we were all sitting over breakfast in Sucre, Bolivia and got ads for carpet cleaning services and sports drinks.Learn to Better Heal Yourself with Reiki is attune your mind, body, and it is argued now by many reiki forums or spiritual trauma.
His original teachings have many treasures - some practical, most spiritual - that inner power.Traditional Chinese Medicine and Miracles a wonderful thing, because the energy begins flowing. This is for those who practise any healing art and service that embodies emotional and physical condition, while leaving the body.Repeat the activating breath 15 to 20 times. It is possible to talk about Reiki are confident in such subtle ways as equalizing disturbances in the late nineteenth and early 20th century.

SUPER NATURAL REALITY
It is so hard to stare at this endless digital blank space having the need to express your feelings somewhere. I don’t wanna post bullshit, like starting one sentence and then exploiting every detail of it. That is wrong. I woke up this morning well rested, then poured a cup of coffee in hope it would give me a positive rush to do something. I wanted to go for a run, but it was already 8:15 am and at that time the streets are already getting flooded with people going to the market, driving to their jobs… It’s 9:40 am now, i am still home drinking coffee with a headache it gave me, lately I’ve been prone to head pain in the back of my head and the upper part of my neck, it comes with coffee, cigarettes, and other substances that I’ve been consuming this week constantly. I should stop, also the hangovers are killing me and the easiest way to get rid of them temporarily is to get drunk again in the evening, but that’s an unwise approach. After I finished this semester at the University, I drove back home. It was an exhausting ride of six and a half hours where you have to share seats with middle age to elderly age  people who complain about everything. This older looking man about the age of sixty offered me a seat. The air conditioning was poor and the borders were crowded. I didn’t have a functioning phone to consume content in order to get distracted from the darkness in front of the bus consuming the space. Usually when you have a long trip ahead and you are sitting with someone, an elderly person, it is by tradition to engage in an endless flowing conversation, about life, stories, events, where you mostly listen and ask questions, taking an interest in the stories they tell their families at dinners and festive occasions. War stories, heritage, family,  the stories of harshness of life, their survival and the survival of their loved ones. There are brighter topics that occur often in the limits of their interests which are most commonly ; fishing, cars, beekeeping, hunting, mountain climbing, driving cars down the seaside, football. Manly stuff, alright to listen to. Most of those conversations you won’t even remember, maybe you can recall fragments in your head like the ones ringing to me now: “Yep, that was the biggest fish I ever caught”, turns to his wife behind him and says “Do you remember Aida?” she laughs and says “How could I not remember. You should all see how happy he was when he caught that fish” and then he turns to her and says “But that is not the fish i am proud of the most…” looking at her. Yet the most fascinating thing in this bus ride is that the people you meet are there do not become your acquaintances or friends, they are simply the person you sat down next to, shared a seat then and there from one place to another. It is a cultural thing, very mysterious yet beautiful, when a man shares his stories with the youth. He claims to have seen it all, you see the pride and the smile on his face as he talks, walks down memory lane opening himself up to me and everybody around that is listening, like a radio waiting for you to tune in. It is enchanting, yet strange, suddenly in this long and exhausting ride you become a part of this story. You could be sitting with them in the garden of their house drinking coffee, the nectar of roses, enjoying recipes of food and beverages that have been passed down for centuries and hearing the same thing. You feel invited, you see? It is an undisturbed order, where everything drains power from tradition, marriage, the happiness of having a car, to be able to go somewhere is just such a nice thought and everybody is grateful to god that it is so and not the other way around. The wife’s cooking and the tradition and love put into it, the husbands hard working and skillfulness of craft who provides for his family in need and thanks to him they are not hungry for food. The common saying “stop complaining, it could be worse, at least you have …”, which offers a sympathetic approach to everything. In times of need these people provide and give to their neighbors, to their families and blood. They are good hard working people, who happened to survive the worst and are existing for us to give us reality, to ground us, make us more approachable, proud that we are who we are, and if we are not we will go and learn. Reality, reality is maintaining a good conversation. Reality is more than just a dark expression. Reality is the cut of all highs and lows a flat line around which we spiral, a story of time space, people, giving and taking, everything else is just a futile word to define a certain art, aspect or feel of it, towards which you develop a barrier, further more become something that you are objectively not and had no resources to develop such an image flawed with its own superficiality. Self-destruction out of passion, but that too is an instinct to survive, caused by the advancement and Bensonhurst blues. It’s 11:32 now. I talked to a friend, made plans for next week to go to the seaside, stay at her parents and her uncle’s holiday home. She is in the capital still at the University. I’m home away from all of that now. Although, I occasionally sit at my writing desk and go through the materials of the next semester, I am not in a hurry to do anything. Life is super slow here. The town is pretty much the same since I left. Some roads are being built then and there, infrastructural improvements and whatnot. The bars and coffee places i went to in High School, to skip class, or drink with friends are still filled with faces I will most likely never speak to. The friends that are still here for reasons too detailed to cover lead a very slow life. We occasionally go out, but the festive mood we all loved and shared is gone. We used to conquer the world every night, now we're just dead flowers in the park.

Selecting Your Wedding Professional Photographer - Wedding Celebration Digital Photography Styles Explained
You've picked your day, booked your venue as well as started purchasing dresses. Now you're looking for a Wedding celebration Professional Photographer Blacksburg. There are a lot of styles of wedding celebration photography out there, as well as while people in the market may understand these styles inside out they be puzzling for couples. Keep in mind as well that not only are you picking a design of digital photography, but different kinds of wedding celebration digital photography can alter demands on your time on your wedding day.  Engagement Photos Blacksburg 24061
Picking the style of digital photography you want at your wedding comes down to 3 things. What design of pictures you want, how much time you wish to spend with a digital photographer on your big day, as well as most importantly of all your very own individuality and convenience before the electronic camera.
There are plenty of different digital photography buzzwords out there. Classic, content, creative or modern are simply a few. Probably extra confusingly they are utilized by various professional photographers in different methods. Ultimately it depends on pairs to ask a lot of inquiries as well as do a lot of research prior to choosing a professional photographer, and also to depend on seeing full collection of images from finished wedding events Do not rely upon the best 5 or 6 shots from numerous wedding celebrations to decide.
Wedding digital photography styles are a concession in between creating amazing job as well as maintaining to a schedule. A digital photographer could generate fantastic photos, however if he takes also long to create them you most likely will not delight in the experience.
Typical (or Presented) Wedding Event Digital Photography
A lot of individuals think of conventional wedding photography as unlimited stale group images where everyone looks rigid as a board. Worse still, the different collections of individuals seem to go on permanently. I assume there is a fashion to be down on standard wedding event photography, but the actual functioning framework is still the very same for the majority of Wedding Celebration Digital Photographer Blacksburg. The photos may be much more trendy yet the actual experience on the day for the groom and bride is very comparable.
There is constantly a compromise in between the sort of work a professional photographer does and also the time it requires to fire it. More official postured photographs will certainly take longer to set up and attain. Any type of professional photographer that creates creative posed job will require a particular amount of time to generate his best work. It is important that you find out how much time he will need, and exercise exactly how it will certainly suit your day. There are photographers who spend a couple of hrs on formal shots. Make certain you enjoy with offering over that quantity of time on your wedding day. If you are not that comfortable in front of the electronic camera you may discover this kind of digital photography harder. A good photographer ought to be able to help you and put you at your ease but for several individuals it can still appear a little bit overwhelming.
Narrative Wedding Digital Photography (Wedding Celebration Photojournalism).
If standard is everything about posed photographs, then reporting wedding digital photography is the opposite. It counts on catching moments as they occur, and also is much more like a fly on the wall surface docudrama. This form of wedding event photography suggests that the photographer invests a lot of his time in the history, and so has ended up being increasingly popular with pairs. Weddings are also increasingly much less formal than they utilized to be. Documentary wedding digital photography demands a various ability from standard wedding event photography so you have to ensure that your digital photographer has the proper photo history and can reveal you complete wedding events to back this up. Wedding photojournalism is more regarding a full collection of pictures from the entire day than a set of a dozen highlights. There are digital photographers out there that will get on the most up to date bandwagon to acquire organization, but still utilize the same old design they constantly have. Wedding photojournalism is everything about anticipation and being in the right location at the correct time. It is not regarding carefully routing individuals, so it puts many standard wedding event digital photographers outside of their capability. There are some much less honest digital photographers that will make use of the most up to date buzzwords to enhance their internet search engine existence, yet still shoot the very same tired old pictures.
If you are reticent about having your picture taken, wedding event photojournalism is possibly your ideal selection. The digital photography takes place without you really realizing and you'll look your all-natural best.
Although these two methods may appear polar revers, in reality most wedding event digital photographers will supply a blend of these 2 styles. There are few wedding event photojournalists who don't contend least some official photographs and also traditional wedding celebration photographers will certainly fire casual photos also. Discover what percentage of each a professional photographer likes to shoot, and also far better still ask what they like to fire one of the most - possibilities are this is what they are best at.
Vintage Wedding Celebration Photography.
Vintage wedding photography is a style that has been entering style lately, but in lots of means its a hard one to measure. Vintage can indicate anything from utilizing old film video cameras throughout some of the wedding celebration to simply a various approach to upload manufacturing to create 'classic' looking electronic data. There are some fantastic digital photographers out there, yet remember that if you are getting documents that are heavily edited in a certain style, you run the risk of your photos looking instead dated a couple of years later on. If I was working with a classic style professional photographer, I personally would want at least some of the wedding event shot on movie, I'm not a huge fan of forging things. As always ask inquiries, see examples and also make an informed decision.
Editorial Wedding Celebration Photography.
This wedding event genre is motivated by the fashion content of glossy publications, at it's ideal it can create amazing premium photos. To produce this successfully on a wedding the professional photographer needs to be highly organised, as well as would possibly require an assistant to help establish a few of the shots beforehand, although that would rely on his or her style. Do your research to make certain that the time demands for this kind of shoot fit in with your strategies. If you really such as this type of photography however don't want to dedicate way too much time to it on your big day, consider scheduling a different picture session after the wedding celebration. Frequently describes as a garbage or value the gown shoot, a separate photo session may be the most effective way to obtain the wedding day you desire and also the photographs you'll love without shedding a substantial chunk of your wedding day. It also means that you and your digital photographer can choose the optimal time of day for the right light and you have scope for rescheduling if it's pouring with rain. In many countries, specifically the United States, high-end wedding event photography is evolving in the direction of 3 shoots: the involvement shoot, the big day, and also a content session. Do not necessarily assume that all of it has to be performed in someday.
Artistic or Art Wedding Celebration Photography.
Essentially a development of typical wedding celebration photography, this type of photography supplies a contemporary take on the typical set of positioned pictures, although these are both terms that have actually been somewhat over made use of by the photo neighborhood, so once again do your research. At its ideal this style can create relocating romantic photos, yet some photographers can over use the very same postures, so it can feel a bit impersonal. Ask to see lots of shoots and don't hesitate to input your very own concepts at your pre-wedding meeting.
How To Choose A Wedding Digital Photographer For Your Wedding event.
Exactly how to Select Your Wedding Event Photographer.
As your special day is scheduled, the location, the auto, and all those good ideas that make your wedding a day to remember, and because listing among the most essential points to keep in mind to do is to reserve the digital photographer. It is his or her obligation to catch those precious minutes on in your wedding celebration pictures that you will certainly have for the remainder of your life. However when it pertains to selecting your professional photographer exactly how can you make certain you have found the best one?
Interview Your Wedding Celebration Photographers.
A good digital photographer will recognize just how to get the very best from the joined pair and also their guests and will have the ability to pick the very best light and also backgrounds for the photos. When you satisfy a digital photographer that may possibly be the photographer for your wedding celebration, inquire about creative thinking and also his or her suggestion for producing the wedding album in regards to design of photos. The digital photographer you select has a function that surpasses just taking photos. A good photographer will understand how to produce opportunities as well as scenarios that will create interesting and also enjoyable images. Remember, your concept of fun might not coincide as your photographer. As an example, at a recent wedding event I photographed the Bride was picked up and also held by the Bridegroom and the Groom's Men and also the Dad's of the Groom and bride while she reclined in their arms. This is a common photo, yet not one that I directly would ever recommend as it is simply not my idea of either a great photo or a fun thing to do. Nonetheless, it is what they wanted as well as I mored than happy to accompany the program.
Your Photographer's Individuality.
This brings me to the following crucial thing to remember, the wedding celebration is your day, not the photographers, this is a day for you to have a good time as well as having fun. People associate in a different way different individuality kinds. Select a pleasant wedding digital photographer that can make you smile, one that can pick up the mood of the guests and enable points to move normally and also with a feeling of happiness for the occasion. This will make photos look even more all-natural and loosened up.
Attempt to have a pre-wedding picture shoot, this will certainly help you to recognize your professional photographer and a lot more notably him to understand you as well as just how you really feel in front of the video camera. With the exemption of your companion you will spend more time with the photographer than with any one else on the day of your wedding event, so make certain you can hop on well with him or her.
Evaluate Portfolios.
What is the most gorgeous photo in the world? You may have a response, yet an additional individual may disagree with you since the answer is subjective. The old saying is true 'charm is in the eye of the observer.' The profile of any type of excellent wedding event photographer will look great to the majority of people; you need to make certain it looks excellent to you. Consider their profile to ensure that the digital photographer's style shows your very own design and also imagination. If a collection of pictures or a sample cd looks excellent, ask to see all the photographs from that wedding event. If the digital photographer has seen you at your residence and this needs a seconded visit, after that so be it.
Get Estimates.
A lot of wedding celebration professional photographers recommend different "plans", allowing you to select a bargain that will best suit your budget plan. Compare the rates plans of numerous professional photographers to locate your best alternative for reviewing the rate together with all the other factors, including top quality of their job, testimonials by various other clients, their adaptability and also personality. Don't just go for the cheep and also pleasant choice either; you are spending for talent and capacity.
A Versatile Technique.
A digital photographer must be versatile with their schedule for the day. Make sure that they will certainly be around through both wedding and reception if you require them to be. A good photographer will just schedule one wedding celebration on any type of someday, as he or she will certainly recognize that things can fail and the photographer might need to stay a bit longer.
As a professional photographer I have actually taken guests to the reception since the taxi has actually not arrived. Gone as well as collected gas as well as balloons to enhance the hall, remained behind anticipated (recently by 6 hrs) because there has actually been a trouble with guests or household and also the images would not have been taken if we had stayed with the original arrangement. For all of these things there was no added charge, as it is all component of the solution that a professional photographer need to supply if he or she is both adaptable and also personable.
Examine The Documents.
There are 3 or potentially four things it deserves talking to your digital photographer, and attempt I claim you should ask to see the proof of. I can just talk from a British Photographers Point of view on this as other countries will certainly have various organisation and also policies, but still inspect!
Initially, check the professional photographer's Public Responsibility Insurance Policy, if Great Aunt Agnes journeys on the tripod as well as fractures her hip is the photographer covered?
Second, check the professional photographer's Professional Indemnity Insurance; if the professional photographer looses all your photos can you get payment?
Third, is the photographer a participant of a specialist body like the British Institute of Professional Photographers? Ask to see his/her ID.
4th, is the professional photographer's automobile covered adequately with break down cover? If his/her cars and truck does not start will they get to your wedding?
Ultimately, if you do find you need assist with those little bonus like taking guests to the reception location, ask if the photographer's car insurance coverage covers company, since if not, then your guests will not be insured to take a trip in the cars and truck.

The No Stress And Anxiety System to Picking a Wedding Event Professional Photographer.
Congratulations on your recent engagement. I make certain if you're taking a look at digital photographers, you've begun to realize intending the ideal wedding event feels like a full-time work as well as the choices can be a little bit overwhelming. This little system on choosing the ideal wedding event photographer for your wedding is fail-safe. If you follow it precisely, you'll understand precisely what you're going to obtain from your wedding event photos. It's applicable to all budget plan degrees, so take a minute to read it as well as you'll be a step in advance in a minimum of one element of your preparation.
This may appear noticeable, yet proficiency needs to be your top standards in picking a Wedding Professional photographer Blacksburg. Every little thing else is additional. They can be the nicest individual on the planet, but if the photos aren't very good, who cares? You're not searching for a close friend, you're searching for fantastic images of your wedding event. Yet assessing proficiency is in some cases hard. The work most of us placed on our sites as well as in our example albums is our finest job. And, unfortunately, that can occasionally be deceiving.
Imagine if you can most likely to someone else's wedding, in your pyjamas, and also walk around and check out the work of your possible suppliers. You can see what the blossoms appear like after 5 hrs, taste the food as well as cake and view the dj or band as they engage the group - all without being seen. You have that alternative with your photographer. You simply require to know how to ask.
Begin your search by gathering names from friends, family and vendors and by searching internet sites of neighborhood wedding event digital photographers. Spend a long time on sites, reviewed evaluations as well as picture on your own in the images you see. Slim your search to your 3-5 faves.
Contact the professional photographers by email and also make one basic demand: If you have my day offered, please show me 2-3 complete wedding celebrations from the previous year, preferably from the moment of day of your wedding event. A full wedding is the gallery they offer to the customers, not simply an option of images in an album or on a web site. There ought to be thousands of pictures in a complete gallery. Why email, why not merely call them? Naturally, photographers have wonderful individuals skills and consequently, numerous professional photographers are terrific salesmen. They will certainly intend to satisfy you prior to they reveal you the galleries. They'll state points like, "I'm happy to show you that, no problem, but allow's satisfy and make sure we're compatible before we reach that part." That converts right into, "Come allow me sell you on my solutions and also we might never ever also need to reach the pesky complete wedding event point." Stay with your guns. Do not miss the preliminary research study. 2-3 complete weddings will certainly give you a great total photo of their design, coverage as well as skills.
If the photographer does not wish to show you complete galleries, move on. They could extremely well be concealing something as well as that wishes to take that risk? Don't fall for the personal privacy feedback (" I'm extremely mindful of my client's personal privacy, so I can not reveal you that.") I have actually seen that reaction provided to newbies in forums to utilize when they don't want to need to reveal their complete wedding events. You're not requesting for particular wedding events, simply 2-3 of the photographer's option. If they reveal wedding events on their website, then they must agree to reveal you complete wedding events.
After browsing a number of complete wedding celebration galleries of photos (do not stress, you can move swiftly, what you're looking for will certainly be apparent as you go), limit your checklist to 2 or 3 photographers. Phone or email your limited prospects and set up appointments. Pay attention to exactly how quickly they respond. Ask an additional question in a separate e-mail and also continue to keep an eye on reaction time. This is not to lose their time (don't send out a long checklist of questions), but to evaluate whether they'll return to you on a prompt basis. Among the largest complaints couples have of the vendors after their wedding celebration is un-returned telephone calls or e-mails. Don't expect minutes - good digital photographers are active people - yet you must hear back within the day, unless you are emailing on the weekend break, when they might be shooting or taking a precious off day. If it's a weekend break, a Monday early morning reaction is more than acceptable.
At the real meeting, you can start to differentiate by individuality and compatibility. Due to the fact that at this moment, you should only be consulting with individuals who are extremely skilled, fire the style of pictures you like as well as respond to you in a timely way. Currently, just select the person you like the most effective, who uses cds and bundles you like as well as that fits within your spending plan.
