Whether it's COVID, disability, or an injury, you can find yourself in a situation where you need to help a family member or friend. So here are some basics of home health care to get you started.

Watch Your Step around the Bed

A loved one could be severely ill or injured so badly that they are bedridden. If this is the case, then they may also require round-the-clock care and cannot do the usual things. Ordinary  things include going to the bathroom, eating, and even watching TV. Because of this, equipment might also be around the bed to help with their needs. So you need to watch your step. For example, they won't soon forgive you if you accidentally tug on their Bard catheters while they are getting some much-needed rest. Additionally, unplugging something could be dangerous.

Always Pay Attention to Privacy

If you take the time to look after someone, you deserve compliments. It's not easy to upend your own life to meet someone else's needs. And they will appreciate it, whether they say so or not. But that appreciation also comes with an enormous amount of guilt and embarrassment when a patient needs you to help them with private things. Private things range from paying the bills to cleaning intimate body parts. Because of this, it helps to stay aware of boundaries and only offer or assist with private matters when it's absolutely necessary.

Get Some Help with Home Health Care

All over the world, there are people who rely on family members to look after them. COVID and the cost of living increases are making it worse. Home health care is extremely expensive. And in the US alone, it is estimated that up to 40,000 people per year have to sell their homes just to afford health care. No one should have to do this. And you are doing something amazing by looking after someone who needs it. But you can't do it alone forever. So try to get some help. Local charities might be willing to lend a hand, and you can ask other relatives to pitch in.

Only Assist When It's Necessary

People need to feel independent when they're unwell, injured, or disabled. Because of this, it's best to assist someone only when they need it or ask for it. Having to ask someone to help you get up off a chair or out of bed can be embarrassing. Therefore, most people will try to do it themselves. And you won't help the situation by hovering around. However, that doesn't mean you should distance yourself either. While you can leave your loved ones to themselves, it's best to stay aware of the times when they might require assistance the most, such as in the morning.

Discuss a Plan with Your Patient

As a home health care provider, you will be more at someone's home than usual. This means you are in someone else's space. And it can feel like an invasion. On the other hand, since you are there to provide care and assistance, you might not need to be there all the time. Therefore, discussing a plan with your loved one about the best times to provide care is helpful. For example, they might only need help preparing a meal, so you should plan specific times for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Of course, any plans must not conflict with your personal life either.

Saw lots of good reviews for Necessary People by Anna Pitoniak - a May 2019 #BOTM pick. We have two friends - Stella, the beautiful, rich girl who does what she wants. And Violet, who comes from nothing, but uses her brain and work ethic to build some success. Maybe you know a Stella - the person with every advantage. Or a Violet - doesn’t share their past, but there’s some hunger there. I struggled with the first half of this book. Couldn’t relate to the characters - couldn’t see where the story was going. Seemed like all of the issues were NYC-centric. Then someone dies and it got interesting 😮. Have you ever worked with someone who was so ambitious they were willing to do anything to get ahead? (Let me tell you about Idiot Duane 😂) What happens when others refuse to let you make your own choices? How much is okay?Last half of the book is fast-paced so stick with it. Not sure I’d call this a pure thriller. Interesting ending.
