Yes, it matters.
One pleasure I get-and maybe this goes for every artist- is the “ah” moment I get when someone first looks at a piece they commission from me.
These moments happen at a convention where I’m face to face with the audience. They range from unmitigated joy to discernment from people trying to calculate the resale value.
So clearly it’s the joy we’re after.
(side-note: I really don’t care if someone wants to resell any of my pieces. I assume they eventually go to someone who wants it proudly displayed. Just have the common decency to appreciate it with a smile when you do receive it.)
When I mail out a piece, there’s always the anxiety that something will go wrong with the mail, despite my best efforts. So when I get a response that it got there safely, there’s relief. Sometimes I even get a “wow, it looks so much better in real life.”
That makes me smile.
The “I’m sure you get this all the time,” can be true but it never gets old. Between the beginning of starting a piece and the hundreds of calculations you think through (no, it’s not all muscle memory) to the final “ah” moments, that’s what gives me verification.
That’s why I do it.
And then, there’s something absolutely beautiful:
“Hi Rags,
Alan Neal in Canada writing, with a long overdue final THANK YOU for the incredible "Black Canary and radio" sketch... the one that got lost by the airline before you got to Ottawa!... but did arrive in the mail.
I know I told you how much I loved it, but I really did want to write to say how great it is to have your work up on the wall in our house. Maybe you get sick of people telling you how great your work is, but I figure it can't hurt to tell you again. :) I have been so swamped with family stuff that just having a moment to write seems so hard to come by.
Anyway...
My wife said "I think it's time to showcase the Canaries in the living room", and so we have hung them all up, and just love the way they look.
I know so often you must do these works and send them off into the world and not know what they mean to people. So I just wanted to say they mean a lot. The joy they bring and the discussions they launch, the details that people mention to me, the way they provide both escape and happiness, allow someone to be both nostalgic and present.
Everyone who comes over is instantly drawn to yours. You did such a beautiful job conveying the joy of Dinah listening to music, and it once again showcases your skill with expressions and movement. It's just stunning.
I also think the framer did a great job (I went with harvest gold as the matte because it was the "it" colour of 1973 :))
So I just wanted to send you a thanks and show you what it looks like, surrounded by many who we've now lost... George Perez, Neal Adams, Dick Giordano, Ramona Fradon... as well as Kat Hudson, Mike Grell, Jamal Igle, Gisele Lagace, and a lovely piece where Gail Simone did the "script" and Tom Fowler did the art. Someday I'll track down Jose-Luis Garcia Lopez and Phil Jimenez :) The living room "gallery" of Black Canaries and radios is below. :)
Sorry that this is a long blathering note, but putting up all the art has just reminded me of how special it is, and how lucky I am, so wanted to say thanks, and hope all is well.
All the best, sir!”

10 TBRs for 2025
Thanks @skarabrae-stone for the tag
The Serviceberry: Abundance and Reciprocity in the Natural World by Robin Wall Kimmerer. I read Braiding Sweetgrass in 2022 and it shook my world. Her writing hit me gently, but carried me so far. In 2023, I read Gathering Moss, which is more niche and less philosophical but still a good book, and I’ve been keeping an eye out for what Kimmerer is writing since. I was a little sad when I saw how short it is, 128 pages in hardcover, but I’m sure it’ll be good.
Real Queer America: LGBT Stories from Red States by Samatha Allen- I’m joining a queer book club!!! I’m so happy for me. While this book hadn’t been on my radar, I do feel like I get a lot from nonfiction books, and I’m looking forward to it.
Harrow the Ninth by Tamsyn Muir - I reread Gideon the Ninth in December in preparation and I’m waiting for a copy to come in from the library. I go feral for Mystery + Necromancy + Sword Fights + “How could you leave me? You’re the only person I’ve ever had” / “Why do you keep me here under your control? All I ever wanted was to be valuable to you, and since I can not [do not believe I can] have that I might as well try to be worth something someplace else.”
Hell Followed with Us by Andrew Joseph White. This YA queer horror book was recommended to me by a friend several years ago. They said something along the lines of it would hit me like a ton of bricks at least in part for the “escaping a fundamentalist cult” aspect of things. So it’s been hanging out on my long TBR list for a long time, but I think I’m ready to read it.
No Comfort for the Undertaker by Chris Keefer is a historical (early 1900s) mystery. This has also been on my TBR for a long time, and she’s been continuing to write and publish books so I want to catch up.
Gleanings by Neal Shusterman. This short story collection is set in the YA Arc of a Scythe series which I thought was very well done and might reread someday.
All Creatures Great and Small by James Herriot. I’m planning on listening to this on Libby (Die Amazon- not giving bezos money if I can help it).
Wuthering heights by Emily Bronte. There are lots of classics I haven’t read, and I’ve heard that this one is kinda fucked up, so it should be fun. I am trying to spread my ‘classics’ reading across a couple centuries, and this was published in 1847. We’ll see what stops I make in my time travels come December 2025.
Cold as Hell by Kelley Armstrong. This is the third in the Haven’s Rock series, which is a spinoff of her Rockton series, both of which are very Copaganda mysteries. While she can be heavy-handed, I still enjoy Armstong’s books. Maybe I’ll find a better series with which to scratch my woman-mc-power-fantasy sometime, but for right now, I’ll keep reading things I can only sort of recommend if you squint and don’t touch the delicately balanced suspension of disbelief.
And lots of romance novels to be decided, definitely including authors K.J. Charles [I highly recommend] and Grace burrowes [I do not recommend at all], possibly including Abby Jimenez, Emily Henry, Cat Sebastian and whoever is available on Libby when I want some rose-tinted glasses.

hi, everyone!
i thought i'd take a quick second to introduce myself and to also formally open up requests. i'm already working on a few things, but requests really do always help and feel free to submit them at any point--but, we'll get to all of that in a moment!
my name is lavinia, and i am a uni student studying both theatre (dramaturgy specifically) and creative writing! i love to sing, act, write (obviously haha), read (i am a huge fan of classic literature, as well as donna tartt, mona awad, sally rooney, elif bautman, and ottessa moshfegh's works), go to concerts, go to the movies, style/design clothing, paint, collect records/cds, and so much more! this barely scratches the surface really but, if any of you share these interests, always feel free to reach out!

I will update this frequently, as I am always either getting into new things or remembering things I already love. I am mostly dedicated to OFMD right now, but you may also leave requests for other fandoms and I will keep them on file, or who knows, perhaps even get to them sooner than you may imagine! Have a wonderful day (or night!), and don't forget to request!
yours truly,
lavinia

🔥
regarding continuity and looking at cape characters as mythologies
Unpopular opinion asks
Part of what draws me to comic universes is the extensive continuity and just how long these stories have been going on. It amazes me that my grandfather might have read about these same characters as a kid, that generation after generation has grown up with these characters the same way I have! Because I very much did grow up with comics and superheroes— my dad introduced me to X-Men as a kid, and I’ve been watching Batman cartoons and other DC shows since I was a baby. I literally cannot remember a time where I didn’t know and love these characters.
A lot of the times — especially by people who aren’t into comics — I see continuity treated as a bad thing or a hamper on the stories. While it can be, such as when an otherwise good run has to reckon with a godawful writing decision made by the previous writer, or a character has a history of being portrayed very poorly, I find that for me it’s a benefit.
I like characters with a rich history, and I especially love seeing how they’ve changed over the decades! Whether it be a character or a mantle, what draws me to it is the meaning and history behind it. With characters, I love to see how they’ve changed as a person, what they’ve been through, who they’ve known.
Take Batgirl, for example— the mantle means nothing to me in current comics. Not Cass being Batgirl, not Steph, none of it. There’s none of the history the mantle had, none of the meaning that came with it being passed down. The exchange of the suit from Helena to Cass, how it was created to represent the Bat, to give Gotham hope during No Man’s Land is so impactful, especially when you take into account Cass’ loyalty to the bat itself. That suit, created to represent not Batgirl, but the bat itself, being the suit Cass wears! The passing of the torch from one disabled woman to another! It’s incredibly powerful, and reading those books is what made the Batgirls my favorite part of the Batfamily.
Now that both Cass and Steph are Batgirl (except when they aren’t) and that Babs is Batgirl again (except when she… possibly isn’t?) there’s none of that history. It isn’t a mantle passed through generations, it’s “when girl is bat” and I’d argue that the mantle no longer works. Robin certainly doesn’t work when there’s two of them, and Batgirl doesn’t either! These titles mean nothing to the characters, and they mean nothing to me, either.
To use another example that nobody except me and four other people care about, Garth. He’s here in the current continuity, and I, a dedicated fan of him, actively want him to stop appearing! Because the writers cut out everything that made him, well, him! The kingdom he comes from is gone, cutting out the heritage he struggled with. He’s got magic, but the person who mentored him and the role it played in his development and understanding of himself is gone.
The romantic relationship that he defined so much of his life by is gone, cutting out so much character development regarding his acceptance of her death and moving on from it that was the crux of his arc in his solo. Also, said character is now his cousin, permanently removing any possibility that this could be restored.
He doesn’t act like himself whatsoever, and how could he? The new continuity removed everything that defined and shaped his character! His suit change, while a minor detail with most characters, really shows how little they cared for Garth’s character when rebooting him. While there are many in-universe details that make it a bad idea, my main complaint is that his original Tempest suit was a tribute to Neal Pozner’s Aquaman design. Phil Jimenez, the writer of said solo, had been in a relationship with Pozner prior to his passing from AIDS, and dedicated the solo to Pozner. This disregard of prior continuity and history cuts out so much meaning, and I’d argue is rather disrespectful to the creator of the Tempest mantle.
While no comic continuity is perfect, I think disregarding the history of characters is not a solution whatsoever, and by doing so you often gut them of meaning. It’s irritating when fan spaces are full of nothing but disregard for the source material, and it’s unbearable when comic writers totally disregard what came before. I can’t stand most modern Fourth World content, despite it being my favorite part of DC, because of a total disrespect for Kirby’s original saga and what it meant. Darkseid is stripped of context, Orion is erased from his own story, it pisses me off!
You lose so much when you disregard a character’s history, and they end up being a hollow shell of what they used to be. Why should I care about this character and their story when the story itself doesn’t? I’m not saying comics need to be dense and full of citations, but when they stop caring about their own history and refuse to engage with the past of the characters they’re writing, I check out. I love Cassandra Cain because she’s Cassandra Cain, not because she’s some random girl in a bat suit!
In regards to comics as modern mythology, I’d say I’m not well-versed on the discussion enough to have an opinion.
