“When the school is on the reserve the child lives with its parents, who are savages, and though he may learn to read and write, his habits, And training and mode of thought are Indian. He is simply a savage who can read and write. It has been strongly pressed on myself, as the head of the Department, that Indian children should be withdrawn as much as possible from the parental influence, and the only way to do that would be to put them in central training industrial schools where they will acquire the habits and modes of thought of white men.”
-Sir John A. Macdonald, Canada’s first prime minister, speaking in the House of Commons in 1883.

Had the opportunity this evening to share in the wisdom and learn from the lived experiences of some very powerful speakers and knowledge keepers, while participating in a virtual beading circle. We have done, through colonialism and cultural genocide, so much harm; and there is so much fucking work to do.

September 30th is Canadian National Day of Truth and Reconciliation. It was set as a national holiday in 2021. Kaya is wearing her orange shirt from Maplelea.
“Colloquially known as Orange Shirt Day, [NDTR] is a Canadian day of memorial to recognize the atrocities and multi-generational effects of the Canadian Indian residential school system.” —Wikipedia

The funniest thing about the janky shirt I made for my husband some 4 years ago (he wasn't really in a position to wear a t-shirt to work because he needed to present well in meetings with the higher-ups, and to get the grad students to take him seriously) is that in such a short time not only are more and more people wearing orange shirts, so "oh that's an orange shirt" rather than "that's a t-shirt" would come to mind, but it really feels like everyone is only wearing the ECM shirts (I saw a small handful of other shirts at the walk on campus today + one "Save the Evidence" one, which obviously counts counts as a specific NDTR shirt).
For the record, this years NDTR donation was to Survivors' Secretariat. They are a local group specifically about the Mohawk Institute. They are raising funds to search the grounds, record the names of the children taken to attend there, and create a history archive. They are not a registered charity, so you won't get a tax receipt. However I have downloaded their letter to my MP to object to the lack of funds for grounds search, so maybe they will get some of that tax money that I don't get back.
#Yes I know that the shirts are fundraisers#we wear whatever orange shirts we have#and I make a separate donation#they get a larger percentage of the money#and I don't have extra shirts lying around that we don't wear#it's win-win

Sept. 30 is the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation (NDTR), a federal statutory holiday and day of remembrance for the Indigenous children who never came home from Canadian residential schools, as well as those who survived them.
I meant to post this earlier but other things got in the way.

Turkey Eggs?
Just read an article about eating turkey eggs. This has me intrigued. There is nothing harmful about them. The article says they have a bit of a stronger flavor then chicken and are creamier more like a duck. Well I am on the hunt for a few turkey eggs. Once I get some I am going to try them fried, scrambled, used in baking and maybe hard/soft boiled. I will let y'all know when I do this and my hard opinion. Also I will do some research being the NDTR that I am wondering what the nutritional values would be,
Okay speaking of eggs going to share a scrambled egg recipe. I know everyone knows how. My wife used to call these inside out omelet.
Take your eggs number depends on you and how many your feeding. Some 1 Pound sausage or bacon, 2-3 cups peppers and onion mix ( found in frozen or fresh), 1 pt mushrooms and 1 pound of baby spinach (this will look like a lot but will cook down).
Go ahead fry up that meat breaking it up as you do so. next toss in the veges but not the spinach just yet. Cook a couple minutes to get veges started nicely add in the eggs and the spinach stir to scramble. If you take the eggs and use an immersion blender on them will give them a bit more fluff. I also throw about a teaspoon of baking powder in the eggs with a little milk.
The spinach will condense to smaller bits now cook till the egg is almost done but still just a little wet. It will finish cooking while you dish it up or while you wait for the family to gather around the table.
Now you have started your day off with a pretty good portion of veges. Pair with some kind of fruit like Fresh cut strawberries. A 8 oz. glass of milk. There you have it delicious meal that really isn't to expensive and anywhere from 15-20 minutes of total time.
Some alternatives you could add some shredded cheese to the eggs when putting them in the pan. Experiment with what you like.
Well enjoy and remember never trust a skinny chef.

Study: Drinking One Tablespoon of Apple Cider Vinegar Each Day Linked to Weight Loss in Younger Adults
— By Sarah Garone, NDTR | March 28, 2024 | Fact Checked By Nick Blackmer
Fast Facts:
A recent study on Lebanese teens and young adults linked drinking apple cider vinegar with significant weight loss after 12 weeks
Despite its promising results, the study had some important limitations
While apple cider vinegar may impact weight loss, it's not a substitute for healthy diet and regular exercise
Drinking apple cider vinegar has become a popular way to lose weight in recent years, but can it really help people slim down?
A new study found that Lebanese teenagers and young adults who drank up to one tablespoon of apple cider vinegar daily for 12 weeks dropped an average of 15 pounds.1
The research, published in BMJ Nutrition, Prevention, & Health, also found that participants had lower blood sugar, cholesterol, and triglyceride levels at the end of the three-month period.
Previous research has assessed the tangy drink’s ability to reduce weight in older adults, but this is the first study to test the strategy in younger people.
“This age group was selected to address the lack of research on ACV’s effects specifically in younger individuals, and to intervene early in life to potentially prevent long-term health complications associated with obesity,” study author Rony Abou-Khalil, PhD, head of the Department of Biology and Biochemistry at Holy Spirit University of Kaslik in Jounieh, Lebanon, told Health.
While the research may make it seem like a daily shot of apple cider vinegar could be an effective weight-loss tool, some experts caution against making too much of the study given its considerable limitations.
Here’s what you need to know about the study, the potential side effects of drinking too much apple cider vinegar and other expert-endorsed ways to lose weight.
Nadine Greeff/Stocksy
The Potential Link Between Apple Cider Vinegar and Weight Loss
Abou-Khalil said the researchers set out to assess a potential solution to obesity that would align with the growing interest in non-pharmaceuticals. “We were motivated to explore potential natural remedies for weight reduction that could offer safe and effective alternatives to traditional interventions,” he said.
They decided to test apple cider vinegar, made from crushed and fermented apples and long used as a health tonic.
The team recruited 120 participants aged 12 to 25. They divided them into four groups and instructed people in three of the groups to drink either 5, 10, or 15 milliliters (ml) of apple cider vinegar in the morning. (For reference, 15 ml is equal to about one tablespoon.) The fourth group drank a placebo.
When the study began, the average weight of participants was about 173 pounds. After 12 weeks, researchers found that the apple cider vinegar groups shed weight overall.
The group that drank 15 ml daily lost the most, dropping its average to about 155 pounds. Those who drank 10 ml reduced their average weight to 159 pounds, and the group that consumed 5 ml dropped to an average of 163 pounds. All three groups had a decline in waist and hip circumference and body mass index (BMI).
The team also discovered significant improvements in blood glucose, triglyceride, and cholesterol levels.
The study is the first to assess apple cider vinegar’s impact on health besides weight. It’s also the only one to examine how the drink affects younger people—though other research has tested whether it helps older adults shed pounds.
A small (but often-cited) 2009 trial found that consuming 1 or 2 tablespoons of the tangy drink daily resulted in modest weight loss of 2 to 4 pounds after three months.2 In another small study, researchers gave apple cider vinegar to people on both calorie-restricted and regular diets. After 12 weeks, both groups had lost weight, but those who consumed ACV had lost more.3
Why Might Apple Cider Vinegar Help People Shed Pounds?
Abou-Khalil said it’s unclear what’s behind apple cider vinegar’s potential effect on weight loss, but he has some theories.
“One proposed mechanism is that ACV may help to increase feelings of satiety, leading to reduced calorie intake,” he noted. “Additionally, ACV has been suggested to influence metabolism and insulin sensitivity, potentially contributing to Fat Oxidation and reduced Fat Storage.”
Approaching the Study’s Results With Caution
While it may seem exciting that something as simple as a daily dose of apple cider vinegar could lead to weight loss, Abou-Khalil acknowledged that the research has some limitations.
For one, twelve weeks may not have been enough to pinpoint a firm association between apple cider vinegar and weight loss, Abou-Khalil said. “Longer-term studies may provide insights into the sustainability of the observed effects and whether any changes are maintained over time,” he added.
It’s also difficult to generalize the findings given the study’s small size, focus only on adolescents and young adults, and lack of diversity among participants. “Our study focused on the Lebanese population, and cultural and dietary practices may vary among different ethnic groups,” Abou-Khalil said.
Melissa Mitri, MS, RDN, a private practice dietitian and weight loss expert unaffiliated with the study, echoed that sentiment. “There is not enough evidence to date that apple cider vinegar will lead to weight loss in diverse groups of people,” she told Health.
Are There Downsides to Taking Apple Cider Vinegar Every Day?
Consuming Apple Cider Vinegar on a daily basis can bring on some Unpleasant Side Effects.
Apple cider vinegar can “Degrade Tooth Enamel and Irritate the Esophagus,” Mitri said, which is why she recommends diluting it in water if you decide to drink it.
A daily shot of ACV might also cause nausea and slow down digestion, which could pose a problem for people whose digestion is already slower due to Gastroparesis or Prescription Weight Loss Medications like Ozempic and Mounjaro.
Apple cider vinegar could also interact with other medicines, such as insulin, diuretics, and laxatives, Mitri said. That’s why it’s important to consult a doctor before trying apple cider vinegar if you’re taking these or any other medications.
“Lastly, it is Not Advised for Those with Kidney Disease, as its High Acidity can Strain the Kidneys,” Mitri said.
Effective Weight-Loss Strategies
A daily dose of apple cider vinegar may help you lose weight, but other strategies are far more tried and true.
“To lose weight, you need to be in a calorie deficit, i.e., take in fewer calories than you burn,” Mitri explained. “You can do this by reducing your calorie intake in your diet, exercising more, or, ideally, combining both.”
Ultimately, these old standbys are probably a surer path to long-term weight loss than jumping on the apple cider vinegar trend.

September 30th was the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation in Canada and today is the public service stat.
It is a time to listen, learn, reflect, and make concrete commitments on how we can and will, as individuals and organizations, support and advance truth and reconciliation throughout the next year and beyond.
As with all my encounters with calls to action or fights for justice, I feel often stymied by where to start - let alone do enough - to help and properly give the time, attention, and consideration I believe is appropriate. Everything feels both inadequate and somehow inappropriately too much , especially when I have benefitted and continue to benefit from privilege that stems from the oppression which needs to be dismantled and for which restitution needs to be made.
However as I believe something is better than nothing...and in the tradition of me using this platform as a home for "lists for healing" here are my personal commitments for this year:
I will learn more about the local indigenous communities and attend at least of one event or space where a local indigenous community is inviting the public to attend with the hope that those outside their community may listen, bear witness, or financially support a cause in their community
I will write an email to the heads of my Specialist Discipline inquiring as to how we are as a community of practice will be concretely supporting T&R this year; I will include the list of suggestions I have gathered from managers and colleagues in the last few years as to how our discipline could concretely and positively contribute to advancing recognition of T&R for their formal consideration
I will be proactive in findings for ways to support T&R in my day to day work
I will be mindful to not put T&R related actions/considerations last in lists and be vigilant that they not be included simply as a checkmark for myself or the organization
I will strive use my privilege to lift up the voices of those who have personal experience and calls to action that need to be heard.
I will work to get more comfortable at knowing what words I may and should use and what questions to ask when speaking or writing about indigenous cultures, stories, rights, and calls to action. But rather than cede to the easier but harmful silence and my fear of saying the wrong thing, I will try my best and be open to suggestions and take it upon myself to research or ask someone when I feel unsure.
I commit to speaking up and challenging all instances of racism, classism, sexism and all other forms of hate, fear, and intolerance I encounter day to day and I will continue to strive to recognize, interrogate and challenge my own biases, assumptions, and preconceived notions.
I will read at least three books/plays by indigenous authors
I will print a more specific version of this list and post it in my office at work, along with items related to my work place's current efforts to support the advancement of Truth and Reconciliation in my office and home both as a personal reminder of my own commitments and as a way to raise awareness of the need for individual, community and organizational action among colleagues and my family.
