Had the opportunity this evening to share in the wisdom and learn from the lived experiences of some very powerful speakers and knowledge keepers, while participating in a virtual beading circle. We have done, through colonialism and cultural genocide, so much harm; and there is so much fucking work to do.

Questions I choose for Reflective Critique #3
For reflective critique #3. I chose the following two topics:
Question 1a:
Cell phones have become important tools for activism. Explain how cell phones give power to individuals to document and share social injustices and enable movements like #BlackLivesMatter and #MeToo to gain momentum. How does this ability change who has the power in society? Any examples should be from the last 5 years.
Question 1b:
How things like #BlackLivesMatter and #MeToo (these are only examples – choose your own → (#NationalDayOfTruthAndReconciliation →my choice) have changed the concept of power on the web and the world. Find another hashtag from the last 5 years that has also contributed to this change. Explain the hashtag and what it changed/is changing regarding the concept of power on the web and the world. Include screenshots of where the hashtag is being used.

The new Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics guidance on plant-based diets is out, I link this a lot as a source so I thought I’d provide for anyone else who does.
The most notable change is that the paper’s scope has been narrowed from all stages of life to those 18 and over. This sounds like a weakening of their position, but the narrowed focus means they can promote a plant-based diet rather than just say it is appropriate.
The NCBI paper exists to provide guidance for health care practitioners, so they’re very conservative about their claims, and have a high bar for clinical evidence. It is a big deal with that they are now pointing to plant-based diets as an effective way of preventing and managing diet-related conditions. This is much more positive position the 2016 paper was.
“It is the position of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics that, in adults, appropriately planned vegetarian and vegan dietary patterns can be nutritionally adequate and can offer long-term health benefits such as improving several health outcomes associated with cardiometabolic diseases.”
“This Position Paper is supported by current evidence, including several systematic reviews. As leaders in evidence-based nutrition care, RDNs and NDTRs should aim to support the development and facilitation of vegetarian and vegan dietary patterns and access to nutrient-dense plant-based meals. Promoting a nutrient-balanced vegetarian dietary pattern on both individual and community scales may be an effective tool for preventing and managing many diet-related conditions.”

The funniest thing about the janky shirt I made for my husband some 4 years ago (he wasn't really in a position to wear a t-shirt to work because he needed to present well in meetings with the higher-ups, and to get the grad students to take him seriously) is that in such a short time not only are more and more people wearing orange shirts, so "oh that's an orange shirt" rather than "that's a t-shirt" would come to mind, but it really feels like everyone is only wearing the ECM shirts (I saw a small handful of other shirts at the walk on campus today + one "Save the Evidence" one, which obviously counts counts as a specific NDTR shirt).
For the record, this years NDTR donation was to Survivors' Secretariat. They are a local group specifically about the Mohawk Institute. They are raising funds to search the grounds, record the names of the children taken to attend there, and create a history archive. They are not a registered charity, so you won't get a tax receipt. However I have downloaded their letter to my MP to object to the lack of funds for grounds search, so maybe they will get some of that tax money that I don't get back.

Commission on Dietetic Registration (CDR): Your Path to Becoming a Credentialed Nutrition Professional
Tumblr media
Anyone hoping to establish a successful career in dietetics and nutrition must be a member of the Commission on Dietetic Registration (CDR). The CDR, the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics' accrediting body, makes sure that dietitians and other nutrition professionals fulfill strict requirements for training, ethics, and competency. The function, qualifications, testing procedure, and significance of the CDR in promoting professions in nutrition and dietetics will all be covered in this article.
What is the CDR, or Commission on Dietetic Registration?
The Academy of Nutrition & Dietetics' credentialing body is the CDR. It was founded to offer certified experts in nutrition and dietetics with nationally recognized qualifications. In addition to upholding professional standards and encouraging ongoing professional growth, the CDR is in charge of certifying individuals.
Mission of the CDR
To protect the public by guaranteeing the proficiency of nutritionists and licensed dietitians.
To offer credentialing courses that meet the industry's present and future demands.
To promote the dietetics industry by upholding moral principles and strict standards.
Credentials the CDR Offers
The CDR provides several credentials designed for various positions in nutrition and dietetics.
1. Nutritionist with a registered diet (RDN)
The most respected certification for dietitians is the RDN.
RDNs operate in a variety of environments, including corporate wellness initiatives, private practice, public health, and hospitals.
Completing a bachelor's or master's degree, passing the CDR test, and completing an approved dietetic internship (DI) are prerequisites.
2. Nutrition and Dietetics Technician, Registered (NDTR)
NDTRs help RDNs with community initiatives, nutritional assessments, and meal planning.
An associate's degree or the completion of a bachelor's degree from an approved program is required for this certificate.
3. Certifications in Specialties
In order to help professionals advance their knowledge and income potential, CDR also provides certifications in specific fields. The Certified Specialist in Sports Dietetics (CSSD) is one example.
CDCES stands for Certified Diabetes Care and Education Specialist.
Certified Oncology Nutrition Specialist (CSO)
The CDR Test: An Entry Point for Certification
For those seeking RDN or NDTR credentials, passing the CDR test is an essential first step.
Qualifications for Eligibility
Completing a dietetics program that has been accredited.
Supervised practice via an internship in dietetics or a comparable program.
A bachelor's or master's degree from an approved university.
Exam Format
There are 125–145 multiple-choice questions in the computer-based test.
Clinical nutrition, community nutrition, food service management, and professional practice are among the subjects covered.
To obtain the RDN or NDTR credential, a passing score is necessary.
Tips for Preparation
Use the study materials and practice exams that the CDR offers, or sign up for an organized exam preparation course.
Concentrate on essential skills, such as food science and medical nutrition therapy.
Keep up a regular study routine to cover every exam topic.
Continuing Professional Education (CPE) and Recertification
To keep their certificates current, certified nutritionists and dietitians need to participate in continuing professional education or CPE.
Why CPE Is Important:
It guarantees that professionals remain current with the most recent findings and methodologies.
Encourages the development of skills and lifelong learning.
Enhances one's credibility in the workplace.
How to Fulfill the Requirements for CPE
Every five years, RDNs and NDTRs must complete a minimum of 75 CPE hours.
Attend webinars, workshops, seminars, and authorized courses.
Record activities using the CDR-managed Professional Development Portfolio (PDP) system.
Importance of the Commission on Dietetic Registration
The CDR is essential to guaranteeing the caliber and proficiency of nutritionists.
1. Recognition in the workplace
Professionals with CDR credentials have credibility in the job market because they are widely recognized.
For dietetics jobs, employers frequently want CDR certifications.
2. Professional Growth
CDR certificates provide access to more specialized and well-paying positions.
Professionals with specialty credentials, like CSSD or CSO, can focus on particular markets.
3. Public Trust
The public may rely on registered dietitians and nutritionists to provide trustworthy advice because of the CDR's rigorous credentialing procedure.
Pathways to Becoming Credentialed by the CDR
Traditional Pathway
Obtain a degree: Finish a dietetics undergraduate or graduate program that has been accredited.
Properly finish a Dietetic Internship (DI): Get practical experience in food service, community, and therapeutic settings.
Pass the CDR Exam: Use the standardized test to demonstrate your proficiency.
Future Education Model
To sit for the CDR exam, prospective RDNs will need to finish a master's degree starting in 2024. The increasing complexity and significance of the dietetics field are reflected in this shift.
FAQs
1. What is the difference between RDN and RD credentials?
The CDR uses both names interchangeably, therefore there is no distinction. RDN places a strong emphasis on dietitians' contributions to dietary practices outside of clinical settings.
2. How can I register for the CDR test?
You can register for the exam whenever your program director submits your eligibility to the CDR after you have fulfilled your academic and supervised practice requirements.
3. Can someone without CDR credentials practice as a nutritionist?
Having a CDR credential, such as RDN or NDTR, offers greater employment chances and professional legitimacy, even though some states permit uncertified dietitians to practice.
4. How much does it cost to keep your CDR credentials up to date?
The annual maintenance fee is approximately $70, and continuing education activities may incur additional fees.
Conclusion
For prospective dietitians and nutritionists, earning a credential from the Commission on Dietetic Registration is a wise investment. Professionals with CDR credentials can pursue rewarding professions in a developing industry that supports health and wellness by fulfilling demanding educational and professional requirements. The CDR provides the information and tools you need to succeed, regardless of where you are in your journey or your goals.

Sept. 30 is the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation (NDTR), a federal statutory holiday and day of remembrance for the Indigenous children who never came home from Canadian residential schools, as well as those who survived them.
I meant to post this earlier but other things got in the way.

Answer to Question #1b
Question 1b:
How things like #BlackLivesMatter and #MeToo (these are only examples – choose your own) have changed the concept of power on the web and the world. Find another hashtag from the last 5 years that has also contributed to this change. Explain the hashtag and what it changed/is changing regarding the concept of power on the web and the world. Include screenshots of where the hashtag is being used.
Another example are the hashtags #NDTR, #NationalDayForTruthAndReconciliation, #TruthAndReconciliation, #OrangeShirtDay, #EveryChildMatters, which was used to bring awareness to the residential school system and its impact on Indigenous communities. After the heartbreaking discovery of unmarked graves at these former residential school sites, these hashtags helped raise awareness and sparked conversations about the historical and ongoing treatment of Indigenous people in Canada. These hashtags also helped to educate non-indigenous Canadians about the trauma and injustices faced by the Indigenous people – giving everyone a chance to advocate. It allowed people to share their stories and demanded that the government take action.
Cell phones have become powerful tools for activism. Movements like #BlackLivesMatter, #MeToo, and #NationalDayOfTruthAndReconcilation show how these devices give individuals the power to document injustice and share it with the world. This has shifted power away from traditional authorities and given marginalized groups a way to be heard. By allowing people to share their stories, cell phones have played a huge role in raising awareness and demanding change.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The screenshots from the Government of Canada website shows how the #NationalDayOfTruthAndReconcilitaion hashtag helped raise awareness about the impact of residential schools. It shows that social media and hashtags can actually influence government action, like how this day was officially recognized. It also shows that the democratization of power can push for change and hold powerful institutions accountable.

Turkey Eggs?
Just read an article about eating turkey eggs. This has me intrigued. There is nothing harmful about them. The article says they have a bit of a stronger flavor then chicken and are creamier more like a duck. Well I am on the hunt for a few turkey eggs. Once I get some I am going to try them fried, scrambled, used in baking and maybe hard/soft boiled. I will let y'all know when I do this and my hard opinion. Also I will do some research being the NDTR that I am wondering what the nutritional values would be,
Okay speaking of eggs going to share a scrambled egg recipe. I know everyone knows how. My wife used to call these inside out omelet.
Take your eggs number depends on you and how many your feeding. Some 1 Pound sausage or bacon, 2-3 cups peppers and onion mix ( found in frozen or fresh), 1 pt mushrooms and 1 pound of baby spinach (this will look like a lot but will cook down).
Go ahead fry up that meat breaking it up as you do so. next toss in the veges but not the spinach just yet. Cook a couple minutes to get veges started nicely add in the eggs and the spinach stir to scramble. If you take the eggs and use an immersion blender on them will give them a bit more fluff. I also throw about a teaspoon of baking powder in the eggs with a little milk.
The spinach will condense to smaller bits now cook till the egg is almost done but still just a little wet. It will finish cooking while you dish it up or while you wait for the family to gather around the table.
Now you have started your day off with a pretty good portion of veges. Pair with some kind of fruit like Fresh cut strawberries. A 8 oz. glass of milk. There you have it delicious meal that really isn't to expensive and anywhere from 15-20 minutes of total time.
Some alternatives you could add some shredded cheese to the eggs when putting them in the pan. Experiment with what you like.
Well enjoy and remember never trust a skinny chef.

September 30th was the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation in Canada and today is the public service stat.
It is a time to listen, learn, reflect, and make concrete commitments on how we can and will, as individuals and organizations, support and advance truth and reconciliation throughout the next year and beyond.
As with all my encounters with calls to action or fights for justice, I feel often stymied by where to start - let alone do enough - to help and properly give the time, attention, and consideration I believe is appropriate. Everything feels both inadequate and somehow inappropriately too much , especially when I have benefitted and continue to benefit from privilege that stems from the oppression which needs to be dismantled and for which restitution needs to be made.
However as I believe something is better than nothing...and in the tradition of me using this platform as a home for "lists for healing" here are my personal commitments for this year:
I will learn more about the local indigenous communities and attend at least of one event or space where a local indigenous community is inviting the public to attend with the hope that those outside their community may listen, bear witness, or financially support a cause in their community
I will write an email to the heads of my Specialist Discipline inquiring as to how we are as a community of practice will be concretely supporting T&R this year; I will include the list of suggestions I have gathered from managers and colleagues in the last few years as to how our discipline could concretely and positively contribute to advancing recognition of T&R for their formal consideration
I will be proactive in findings for ways to support T&R in my day to day work
I will be mindful to not put T&R related actions/considerations last in lists and be vigilant that they not be included simply as a checkmark for myself or the organization
I will strive use my privilege to lift up the voices of those who have personal experience and calls to action that need to be heard.
I will work to get more comfortable at knowing what words I may and should use and what questions to ask when speaking or writing about indigenous cultures, stories, rights, and calls to action. But rather than cede to the easier but harmful silence and my fear of saying the wrong thing, I will try my best and be open to suggestions and take it upon myself to research or ask someone when I feel unsure.
I commit to speaking up and challenging all instances of racism, classism, sexism and all other forms of hate, fear, and intolerance I encounter day to day and I will continue to strive to recognize, interrogate and challenge my own biases, assumptions, and preconceived notions.
I will read at least three books/plays by indigenous authors
I will print a more specific version of this list and post it in my office at work, along with items related to my work place's current efforts to support the advancement of Truth and Reconciliation in my office and home both as a personal reminder of my own commitments and as a way to raise awareness of the need for individual, community and organizational action among colleagues and my family.
