A New Lady

Shireen stood with Selyse, her mother, atop a flight of steps as they waited for the new arrival at Winterfell. The older woman’s hand was a heavy weight and a tight hold upon her shoulder, sharp enough to be painful, but it was reassuring because of that. Her mother was finally holding her in a protective manner, and Shireen found comfort in the severity of it. The princess even dared to press lightly into the older woman, finding herself trusting that Selyse would not scold her nor push her away as she would have before.

If one good thing had come from the pyre, it was this; the knowledge her mother loved her after all.

When she had expressed curiosity about the rumoured lady due to arrive at Winterfell now that the Boltons were gone, and indicated that she wanted to meet the new woman, Selyse had insisted on accompanying her. As few things had done of recent, it had brought a smile to the scarred child’s face.

As the gate was opened to permit the lady entry, Shireen raised her chin so that she could see better, then began to make her way down the stairs with her mother close behind so that she could greet the new arrival. “Hello, My Lady,” she gave a polite half-curtsy to the woman, her free hand holding her charred stag figurine protectively to her middle. “I am Shireen Baratheon, and this is my mother, Selyse Baratheon.” She was glad she did not have to attempt saying her father’s name given the circumstances. “Did you have safe travels? I know winter has been... hard for everyone...”

Hopefully it had been kinder to the woman than it had been to Shireen.

In the distance, she could hear some of the dragons snoring and whistling. “They usually spend most of their time down here, Lady Blackmyre,” she said to her guest with a smile. “But I think they would be better off being free, don’t you?”

it is astonishing the way she seemingly appears from out of nowhere. where is she from? who is she? what is she doing here? all questions that bother because he does not know their answer. soon, he would. he would make her tell him everything, like how she performed that spell just now. sword is quietly drawn. what was a blade against a sorceress? but it was all he knew how to protect himself. hopefully, the element of surprise would come in handy.

like a predator stalking its prey, the prince creeps forward from behind. one foot in front of the other and making sure no noise or crack of a twig could be heard. he's standing in a defensive position whenever he pauses. knees bent and blade pointed towards her. words stuck in throat, wary of approaching her, but the daring streak in his heart tells him to go forward and face her with courage of the dragon.

" you, stand and turn slowly with your hands in the air. " unsure of how magic works, whether hands needed to be used or simple words only needed to be whispered. " i saw what happened just now. how you appeared.. where did you come from and why are you here? if you have come with ill intentions i will know of it. i am unafraid to strike you down right here. "

in the distance, vhagar lifts her head in the direction of her rider, appearing above the tree line, feeling how his muscles coil tight and awaiting a command.

Anger twists the flame-haired woman's visage as she expels pure arcane power at what appears to be a tall mirror. The green tinged energy writhes around her like a great serpent, striking the glass repeatedly. The energy crackles and hums strangely. There appears to be an image within - a man, tall, shrouded in shadow. It wouldn't be perfectly clear to her unknown observer, however.

Eventually, her mana reserves dwindle into practically nothing, and the mysterious woman stumbles and staggers forward. Hands scramble for purchase on the tarnished glass, and she sags like there is some invisible weight weighing her down. Her head bows, curtains of red tresses obscuring her face.

Now that the magic has faded, the figure in the mere is clearly and it is a man. Tall, bald, and dressed in wolf furs. His stance, relaxed but authorative. Curiouser still, he has pointed ears. She looks up again, her expression a mixture of defeat and unfettered rage. (If looks could kill.) The man smiles then, one full of regret and satisfaction, both.

Before she is able to draw herself up to full height again, the man was gone. And that was left was her distorted reflection.

because you have made mistakes you cannot swallow

mistakes come back to you like echoes in an empty cave. you have been trying since you started but does trying count? is trying good enough? every night it visits you, the pain that you have caused with your clumsy hands and venom-tongue. life careens onward, onward, with the moon hung in the sky and the sun the day after, but you walk backwards on this path so you can keep sight of what you did. the destruction still feels fresh. it still feels like fire, where you burned them. fire is supposed to be warm. it burned them, and it will swallow you. blow out the candle. let it rest. some things are better left behind in the dark.
