F U N. F A C T S It has been a good long while since I said a proper hello to you all and I have had lots of new followers recently, hiiiiiii 👩🏻‍🎨. I thought it might be fun to share a few weird / wonderful (both?) facts about me. I am doing The Other Art Fair in Kings Cross at the end of the month and I know lots of people find it awkward talking to artists about their art work. SO, I thought by sharing some of these random facts with you then you will already know some things we can chat about! I make my own paints using pigment from fun trips foraging with my besties @gis_a_look_man and @pearlydoo 2. I am finally making art work I am proud of and enjoy creating 3.I love reading, and normally will read non-fiction based books on climate change, the environment, human behaviour and anything to do with plants and rocks! I also love a good crime thriller 4.I have been vegan for 5 years 5.I’m a Taurus. Those of you that are or know a Taurus will know what this means. 6.I’m 5ft6” “I wish I was a little bit taller, I wish I was a baller...” 7.I love green, pink and mustard. Even better if all together. 8.Don’t try to talk to me before I’ve had my morning coffee. I’m quite moody. 9.I’m super duper competitive. I’ve been known to compete against myself when no one will play with me anymore, because I’m too competitive. 10.I have discovered I actually like apples despite having said I hate them for 20 odd years! 11.My pet hate is the washing labels you get in clothes. They always get cut out because they are itchy and annoying. 12.I love garage music, dancing and karaoke 13.I won an award at school, aptly named “The Mona Lisa Award” 14.I used to have two pet rats, Prissy and Bobby, they were the best! 15.I believe if you ask the universe for help it will listen The paintings I’m holding will be coming with me to the fair. H O M E Wouldn’t you just love for this to be your home?! Two of my paintings are very happy in their new home here. The biggest painting is a commission. The paint was created using rocks from the land the villa sits on in Ibiza. A rich orange ochre. The other two colours are from London and Scotland. It’s shape is from a walk taken near to the villa and also inspired by the coastline of the beautiful Ibizan island. Finished off nicely with pure 24K gold leaf 💛 I love to create personal commissions, especially when I had so much freedom and trust like I did for this piece. P O W D E R. T O. P A I N T From powder to paint. This process is one of my favourites! Making blue copper acetate takes quite a bit of time but it’s totally worth it! I submerge copper scraps in vinegar with salt and leave it for 4-6weeks, occasionally topping up the vinegar to encourage more copper acetate particles to form on the copper scraps. Once it’s dry I carefully scrap it from the copper and crush it in a pestle and mortar to make the powder I can turn into paint! This is the type of paint I’ve used for Blue Sky Thinking. (Swipe to see photos of it in Wild and Wonderful exhibition) It never fails to surprise me. So many different reactions and shades of blues / greens can emerge. Who needs conventional paint from a tube huh? Z O O M. O U T It’s important for us all to zoom out once in a while I think. Personally I can get too focussed in on something and forget to see the bigger picture. Do you find you do this too? P R I N T All my artworks are originals, I don’t make prints of my work. Many people ask me why and it’s because I feel like it goes against the grain for my work. As I make all my own paints from rocks and don’t buy shop bought it feels counterintuitive to then make prints of them. My practice is about being sustainable as much as I can, which means I don’t like to make runs of prints. BUT When I make my paints I have some paint left over on the slab. This is when I take a ‘print’ of the colour. I often use these to make smaller works or mini’s that are more affordable. What do you think about buying originals over prints? M I X I N G This black paint was a joy to make! It has such good consistency and depth of colour. I’ve got a few ideas brewing already for this watercolour. The break over Christmas has allowed me time to plan some new works and I can’t wait to get started on them. First up though I have to order my birch plywood! Now, to decide on what sizes. B L U E Finding blue in the natural world is very tricky. I make my own blue/green colour by using a process that reacts with copper scraps creating a blue powder on them. It’s known as copper acetate. I love this way of working as the results always vary. This painting is framed and ready for an exhibition in the new year. It’ll be exhibited as part of a group show, curated by @bobcatgallery and will be held in the wonderful @508_gallery I’m super excited for this show and thankful to be invited to exhibit. C O L O U R Creating my own watercolours continues to fascinate and excite me. These two colours are the pigments used in my painting The Divide. The black/grey is a slate that was foraged in Scotland and the yellow ochre was given to me by a client from her local beach in Wales. The process of making really ties my work to nature and myself to the colours I use. Before I have even painted with them they hold memories and tell stories. What is your favourite colour? P I G M E N T For those of you that might be new to following my artistic journey; I make my own watercolours. I use found rocks and earth, I grind them into a powder using a pestle and mortar and then using a binder and a few other things I make my watercolour.
