Breath of the Wild!Jelsa AU (Analysis & Parallels)

Yes yes I know I’m at it again but dear reader, I ask that you once again HEAR ME OUT and LET ME COOK.

At some point in the middle of the day today as I am cleaning the house, the idea came to me like a vision and the more I thought about it, the more the lines started CONNECTING and MAKING SENSE.

In part I am writing this as I have a deep love for both The Legend of Zelda franchise (and Breath of the Wild IN PARTICULAR as my first Zelda game) AND Rise of the Guardians (I do not feel particularly strongly about Frozen aside from Elsa as a character, but I DO feel EXTREMELY strongly for Jelsa, which is NECESSARY for this AU and comparison to work!!!) and another part an attempt to get my very good, very intelligent, extremely GIFTED friend and favorite fic writer @therentyoupay into ANOTHER ship I am deeply passionate about: ZeLink.

So perhaps this analysis post can be best summed up as "Explaining ZeLink through the lens of Jelsa" or vise versa.

In fact, ZeLink is another ship I am already planning a video on, but for now, this particular AU calls to me and demands to be elaborated on and perhaps illustrated at some point 👀

Who is Who?

For this post, I will be focusing on the Three Bearers of the Triforce:

Ganon/Ganondorf (Triforce of Power),

Zelda (Triforce of Wisdom), and

Link (Triforce of Courage),

who are always being reborn and fated meet, and the central characters of every LOZ story (but we'll get to the Champions in the next post)

As the prevailing bearer of the Triforce of Power, Ganon or Ganondorf (his human form) is the archnemesis of Link and Zelda.

With titles such as The Prince of Darkness and The Demon King, it's only right that this role is given to Pitch Black.

Power

Unlike Link or Zelda whom, among their many incarnations, may not be in possession of their respective Triforces, Ganon is always the bearer of the Triforce of Power due to his sheer desire for ruling the world with an iron fist. This is the same desire expressed by Pitch Black in both the movies and books, as his ambition is to cover the world in darkness and fear: completely under his control. Their powers are similar in nature, it corrupts and leaves a stain (malice) on the wider environment. They share a love of conquest and destruction and delight in seeing those around them suffer.

Scheming

Though both Ganon and Pitch are undoubtedly capable of taking what they want with sheer brute force, both characters possess a penchant for scheming and tactical strategy. They conquer not only on the battlefield, but in the court of politics, where necessary. Though we don't see this demonstrated in BOTW, we do see his political savvy and the extend of his scheming in Tears of the Kingdom when he still possessed his human form. They are incredibly dangerous tacticians that is often one step ahead of the heroes, thus able to out-maneuver them and gain the upper hand.

Hubris

As is often their undoing, their confidence in being ahead causes them to lose their composure. Power corrupts, and this weakness of mind causes them to make fatal, self-destructive mistakes that create an opening for the Hero to seize.

A Hero Destined to Rise Against Him

In both of Ganon/Ganondorf and Pitch's cases, they are destined to be ultimately defeated by a Chosen Hero who wields a Weapon that can seal their Darkness.

Which segways us perfectly to our next character, our Chosen Hero!

Unsurprisingly, Jack Frost fits Link's role as the Hero of the Wild in the story perfectly.

Chosen for A Big Destiny

Although unlike Link, Jack was not personally aware of the "why" for his existence and recruitment into the Guardians until much much later, he was indeed, nevertheless chosen. The reasons for his choosing, in broad strokes, are similar to Link's circumstances. Both of them demonstrated high levels of relevant proficiency and prowess in their respective roles (Guardian/Royal Knight) which led to them being chosen for their respective titles. Link as the Princess' Appointed Knight and Legendary Hero Who Wields The Sword That Seals the Darkness, and Jack as the Immortal Spirit of Winter and later, Guardian of Fun Destined to Save the Guardians and Defeat Pitch Black.

Rebirth

A striking resemblance between Jack and BOTW Link is perhaps their theme of "the end becomes the beginning" in which both experience Death After a Great Sacrifice and are Reborn Anew. Both of these fairy boys died protecting someone they cared about, regardless of cost or consequence, and upon being brought to life from the brink of death, they are forever changed as people.

For Jack, this comes in the form of new powers, new domains, and the new experience in being a Spirit. For Link, it's a bit more literal, as he seemingly adopts a much more open, lively, carefree personality in the absence of his former duties, burdens, and responsibilities that (in canon) brings him to resemble Jack Frost better than his former persona as a royal knight.

Loss of Memory

Another striking resemblance between Jack and Link is the circumstances of their rebirth, which came at the cost of their memories and their former identities. Not knowing who they were or what their purpose was, they wandered the land aimlessly in search of meaning, until destiny eventually guides them to their Reason for Existing.

In fact, both of their rebirths also involve being lifted from pools of water

But even though both Jack and Link recover some semblance of their memories and identities Before, it is unclear just how much left remained lost.

Past Lives

Let’s be real here, Pre-Calamity Link is NOTHING like Pre-Spirit Jack. While Pre-Calamity Link is serious, focused, stoic and Silent, Jack has pretty much always been the same person before and after his Rebirth. But, Jack was also a simple peasant boy who Definitely Had No Ambition To Become A Knight. But in this AU, let’s say he did. Let’s say he was determined to follow in his father’s footsteps to become a royal knight. Let’s say he finds the Legendary Weapon That Seals The Darkness, and that seals his fate.

Certainly, he’ll never be as serious and stoic or Silent as Pre-Calamity Link was, no matter how much pressure he’s in. But perhaps, it makes him just a bit more Intense and Guarded.

Lone Wolf But Stronger in a Pack

Obviously we know that Jack Frost flew solo for pretty much his entire life as a spirit, and he gained quite a renown for himself in doing so, and it it s indisputable that while he was Strong On His Own, he was Much Stronger With The Guardians. Despite never working in a team before, teamwork came naturally to Jack, and it only served to amplify his strengths while covering his weaknesses.

Now, what about Link? For the majority of BOTW, Link travels alone, and while he is completely Lethal and Unstoppable as is, similarly to Jack, he only really grows stronger through reconnecting with the Ghosts of his deceased friends, who each lend him their Power and Support in a more literal sense. Once you resolve each quest in the Four Regions of Hyrule, your friends will make the final battle against Calamity Ganon much easier than if you were to head straight there by yourself.

And of course, Link would not have been able to defeat Calamity Ganon at all if it hadn’t been for Princess Zelda, and the reverse is also true. They must work together to Seal Calamity Ganon for the next 10,000 years.

Devoted

Both Link and Jack are deeply dedicated to those they have formed attachments to. If you played BOTW and/or TOTK, you know just how deeply devoted and dutiful Link was to Zelda, willing to let the entire Kingdom of Hyrule fall to keep her safe, choosing to stay with her and help her escape the kingdom (abandoning his Duty, abandoning his Destiny) and just as willing to lay his life down to spare hers.

Jack is similarly dedicated as we see from his interactions and protectiveness of Baby Tooth and Jamie Bennett, and how he charged straight into the eye of the storm of Pitch’s sand vortex to save Sandy. Those who give love to him, he gives love readily back.

Wild

This one is quite self-explanatory, but I will explain anyway!

As the titular Hero of the Wild, Link is every bit a woodsman and outdoor survivalist as his name implies. He is an unstoppable force of nature that can and will survive anything nature throw at him (be it lightning strikes, monsters, or Laser-Blasting-Malice-Possessed Guardians [no, not THOSE Guardians]). Link thrives in the wilderness, just him and the elements, and perhaps the occasional pot lid and soup ladle (if he’s really strapped for weapons, a mop will also do). Really, it speaks to his resourcefulness and resilience, his independence and self-sufficiency. Though perhaps, at the cost of certain things like manners, propriety, and respect for public and/or private property (of course he had to break all those clay pots, what if there was something inside? Of course he had to jump into the garden pond and grab fish with his bare hands, how else is he going to get protein for his seafood meunière? of course—). Much like Jack Frost.

If there was one word to describe the Winter Spirit, it was certainly, and similarly, ‘Wild.’ After all, he is undoubtedly the most unpredictable spirit to become a guardian, and even before then, he had made a name for himself for being quite formidable and intimidatingly ferocious when he wants to be. He does as he pleases with no fear or shame of what others may think. And similarly, this often lands both Blond Fairy Boys a fierce scolding from many people, not that it deters their behaviour in any way shape or form.

They will learn absolutely nothing from these scoldings and will 100% do it again. But stealthier, craftier, perhaps.

Unless, of course, the scolding comes from a Particular Wise and Beautiful Princess. Only then they will consider. And it is only this Wise and Beautiful Princess who is capable of tempering their wildness just enough to be a functioning member of the community.

Fearless

As the Triforce of Courage, it is perhaps a given that its bearer will readily face down any challenge or adversary without hesitation. No matter how big, no matter how impossible, no matter what. Jack and Link are always ready for a fight, for action; their heart pumps for the thrill of adventure and the unknown, new experiences, meeting new people. The two are travelers who prefer to take the scenic—read: deeply unconventional and unsafe—route, taking as many detours as possible. And if they land in trouble, then it’s all the more Fun.

Jack and Link are Fearless in every way one could be. For Link, it is simply in his immortal, undying nature. For Jack, as Fear’s archenemy, he cannot afford to harbor it within him, and that is precisely how he navigated his way through immortality: with Fun and Light and Hope. Diving headfirst from a giant waterfall? Bring it on! Taking on an entire hoard of ferocious monsters alone with nothing but a pot lid and soup ladle? Challenge accepted. Jumping on the backs of Animals You Definitely Shouldn’t Use as Mounts and riding them anyway? Give them five minutes.

Notoriously Good-Looking

To keep it short and sweet, both Link and Jack have been described in their respective media (by various characters) to be notably handsome, and they themselves are aware of this fact and Very Confident About It. They are very comfortable in their own skin (perhaps too comfortable) though their handsomeness does not always shine through, in great part due to their Erratic Behaviour and Strange Fashion Choices (“look, it made perfect sense at the time.”).

Jack-of-all-Trades

Both Jack and Link are undoubtedly masters at their signature weapons (Jack with his Shepherd’s Crook and Link with the Master Sword and Hylian Shield), though Link has a more diverse skill set than Jack as per the ROTG movie. Link excels with any kind of weapon (or even household objects) he can get his hands on: short swords and clubs, two-handed weapons (including but not limited to: great swords, axes, and bats), spears, wands, and arguably his strongest weapon, the bow and arrow, with which he is able to shoot up to five arrows at once in a spread and enter Bullet Time when he is in the air. And he can also do all this on horseback, of course. It makes him an incredibly versatile fighter and well-equipped for survival in the wild.

While Jack is limited to his Shepherd’s Crook in the movie, he does not exclusively wield it as such. In the action scenes of the movie, we see Jack wield his staff to cast magic like a wand, attack with the slicing motion of a sword, the stabbing of a spear, and even the swing of a bat. In the books, 5 years after the movie’s release, William Joyce has also written Jack to be able to shapeshift his staff into a bow and arrow, giving him a more Hunter-like appearance

He is also apparently fluent in squirrel and chipmunk speak. I did not know this.

Something I did in “more than you know” (my collab fic with therentyoupay) was push this ability a bit further to allow Jack to shapeshift his staff into a variety of weapons, not just a bow and arrow, such as an ice sword or axe. We can apply the same idea here, to better reconcile the skillsets of Jack and Link.

But a shared key trait that already exists is that without any weapons (barehanded) Jack and Link cannot fight (unlike their Princesses, who are stronger with their magic as opposed to any physical weapon).

Snowboarding/Shield-Surfing

Fun is an essential component of Jack’s character. It is his CORE, what makes him WHO HE IS. However, it is also an important part of Link’s character, particularly post-Calamity. Aside from frolicking in—read: terrrorizing—the wilderness, campfire-cooking, and completing Korok puzzles, a favorite pastime of Link’s is an activity called shield-surfing, which is exactly what it sounds like: using his shield to sled down hills of grass, deserts, and snowy mountains. And he’s quite good at it too! Canonically, he holds several records in shield-surfing from the snowy peaks of Hebra to the vast Gerudo Desert, and even incorporates it into his fighting.

And who else would be particularly terrific at snowboarding other than Jack Frost himself? It was actually stated in the DVD Featurette for Rise of the Guardians that Jack’s entire concept was inspired by skateboarders, and that they wanted him to glide in the wind with the skill of an Olympic snowboarder (hey anyone wanna make an AU with Olympic Snowboarder Jack?), which we do see him doing with his staff at several points in the movie!

Clearly, this is a perfect parallel. A mirror even. If you will.

Smart Mouth

One of my (and I’m sure many others) favorite things about Jack is his quick-with and sharp tongue. He’s always ready with a sassy remark or a snide comment and I think that’s one of the things that make him so Fun! Now, for a comparison with Link, you’re probably thinking this should be a major difference as Link is well known to be The Silent Protagonist Ever, but as many players of BOTW and TOTK have noticed and accurately pointed out, Link is given dialogue options for the players to choose from when interacting with NPCs, which in itself implies that that is Link speaking and responding to NPCs questions.

I am of the opinion that these are Link’s own words rather than the “player’s” responses being spoken through Link, and the reason I think this is because these options show off some degree of personality rather than remaining neutral to allow players to project onto them, and often times more or less reiterate the same message, just in different words (hinting that IC, Link will ONLY agree or disagree to those things).

The one below is exemplary because the only two options are either to flirt shamelessly or ruin her day.

This is also not including the fact Eiji Aonuma (the creator of The Legend of Zelda) himself has said that all Links are “bastards” in their own unique ways and indeed, the persistent inclusion of his jerky and sassy dialogue options across all LOZ games is further evidence of this.

So of course, who better to keep this sassy lost child in check than The Wisest Person in the Land?

Zelda Hyrule, the Triforce of Wisdom is the perfect role for someone like Elsa Arendelle.

There are many parallels between this iteration of Zelda (as opposed to other Zelda’s of the different games) and Elsa.

Wisdom

As the bearer of the Triforce of Wisdom, all incarnations of Zelda are blessed with superior intelligence and wisdom, traits that are also prevalent in Elsa. The Triforce of Wisdom doesn't JUST impart divine wisdom upon its holder, it also grants the holder untold mystical abilities (see: Elsa's ice powers and ability to create sentient life), and the ability to heal others (see: Elsa thawing Anna and the Fjord). The Triforce of Wisdom leads its holder to make the right decisions, making them wiser than any mortal. Elsa is much the same, though hers is a result of her own temperament and upbringing.

As the Triforce of Wisdom, Zelda is a constant presence of guidance and support for Link in many of her game iterations (including this one), and she has always stood side by side with him to defeat Ganon.

Duty-Bound

Both Elsa and Zelda have momentous weights on their shoulders as the Crown Princesses of their respective kingdoms, and this is a responsibility that both Princess-turned-Queens take very seriously. Though this position brings them no joy—if not, in fact the complete opposite—they are deeply devoted to their cause, their kingdom, their families, and as a result, they continue to strive to excel in it and meet seemingly impossible expectations. They force themselves to fit the mold of this role, even at the cost of who they are as a person and their personal wants or desires.

Hiding their true selves

This is a very large proponent of both Elsa and Zelda's struggle in their respective stories:

Elsa has had to hide her ice powers for the majority of her life. But her ice powers are something that is inextricably a large part of who she is, something she cannot change or be rid of, and yet it is something she was made to never express or show or hone. Instead, she has had to suppress and neglect them to pass as "normal." She had been raised to associate her powers with fear, with danger, with solation. She was made to see them as useless, something to be ashamed of, and something to never be given a second glance.

Zelda is a scholar and a researcher, she is a curious person with a passion for studying the world around her. She wants to learn, to study, to educate, but instead this goal is considered "frivolous" and "unimportant" by her father. It is stamped as a distraction, and blamed as the reason Zelda has yet to awaken her Sealing powers, despite the fact her passion and determination for research was fueled by her shortcomings as The Princess with the Blood of the Goddess. It was her way of contributing to the coalition's preparations against The Calamity, even without her powers.

Additionally both Elsa and Zelda have a mask for who they believe they should be: a regal, elegant, level-headed royal who is mature and Above Silly Games when in reality, they are vivacious young women who would have loved to engage in said Silly Games, and have more love to give than what they were allowed.

Grand Destinies

Another similarity that is shared between Elsa and Zelda are the grand destinies that awaited them, and were expected to fulfill. There are slight divergences in both, but the broad strokes remain the same:

Both royals possess a unique and unstoppable power that drives the narratives of both stories forward

They are both fated to be the Key in preventing a Great Calamity (Zelda was destined to seal away Calamity Ganon, a force of hatred and malice that arose every 10,000 years with her Sealing Powers, and Elsa was destined to become the Bridge between the Spirits and the Humans in the Enchanted Forest as the Fifth Spirit, which allowed her to prevent Arendelle's destruction)

Both their powers are mysterious and unknowable, and its growth and behavior eludes the both of them

Their respective powers brought them great distress (for completely opposite reasons, mind, but we'll get to that) and is a constant source of struggle in their stories.

Loss

Both queens lost their parents at a young age. The absence of their parents caused a deep trauma that affected their ability to regulate or control their powers in some way. Zelda losing her mother so young meant she never got the chance to learn to use her powers. This lack of guidance would later indirectly result in her losing her father due to her not being able to awaken her powers in time.

For Elsa, it is much the same. The lack of guidance in her life only further widened the ridge not only between herself and her sister, but also the wider community. It prevented her from being able to form connections as well as she could have.

Adored

Despite her Shortcomings, Failures, and Insecurities, both Zelda and Elsa are always surrounded by love and people who adore them. These people see them for them, who they are as people as opposed to their powers, their position, and their destinies. These people see how hard she works and appreciate her dedication, and they are always ready to offer comfort and reassurance to assuage their Negative Thoughts. They may not always remember or be aware of this, but they are always the apple of many’s eyes.

Shared Personality Traits

A quick list of similar key personality traits between Zelda and Elsa that make Elsa a great stand-in for Zelda because there is Just So Much

Withdrawn, hesitant, unsure of herself (AT FIRST)

TERRIFIED of the destiny that awaited them (Fulfilling a prophecy, ruling a kingdom and potentially destroying it)

Isolated and made to keep to herself

Studious, intelligent, diligent

Resourceful and determined

So full of fear, yet fearless nonetheless

Awe-inspiring leaders

Well-mannered and conducts herself well (except where Certain Blond Men are involved)

Slow to warm up to people, especially when it comes to Certain Blond Men That Follow Them Around Everywhere

Has a hard time talking about or expressing their feelings until it's All Just Too Much and Entirely Too Late

But deep down are very warm and kind

Patient and understanding, usually. But Certain Blond Men tend to test their limits. (at least, at first)

Differences

Of course, there are also differences that may potentially be Game Breaking, so let's discuss a few of them and how they could be accommodated

The Fear of their Power

Where Elsa feared her power due to its strength and her inability to pacify or control it, Zelda's fear comes from the fact she may not even have the powers she was supposed to have, compounded by the fact that the Kingdom's survival entirely hinges on Zelda mastering her powers and using it.

Where Elsa fears using her powers, Zelda fears not being able to use hers in time. Though the fear itself is a common thread, the cause is very much opposite and paramount to the driving force between their respective stories.

Failure

A big component of Zelda's story that Elsa lacks in hers. When Elsa fails or makes a mistake, she is able to undo all the damage she caused with minimal consequences to herself and the wider environment (resurrects Anna, thaws the fjord, discovers the secrets of her family's past, reconnects the spirits to humans, saves Arendelle from a tidal wave).

When Zelda fails, the consequences are permanent and lasting. Failing to awaken her powers in time—despite spending hours for multiple days on end praying before the Goddess statues for guidance in nothing but ceremonial robes, and occasionally in freezing cold waters until she collapsed—she was unable to stop the destruction of her kingdom, the deaths of her friends and family (who went to battle for her, on her behalf), and even (for a time) the person she loved, who refused to leave her side until the bitter end. Zelda would never see her friends and father again, her champion had lost a majority of his memories (save for the ones he had of her) and may never be the person she once knew, and the Kingdom of Hyrule as it was will never return. The damage has been done, and she can only pick up the pieces of What Remained and start anew.

This fear and burden of failure is a pervasive theme in Zelda's story. She is perceived as a failure by her own father, and even the wider kingdom court due to her inability to awaken and wield the power that had been passed down from generation to generation. This is an aspect lacking in Elsa's story, who was the first in her name to wield ANY sort of magical ability.

Resentment

Due to her inability to awaken her powers, Zelda developed a resentment towards Link, who had already found and been chosen by the Master Sword and stepped into his Destiny as The Hero Who Wields The Sword That Seals The Darkness. She saw his accomplishments, his skill and readiness as a slight against her own shortcomings, and the presence of the legendary sword on his back served as a constant reminder of her failures. She projected her insecurities onto him, believing that he too thought she was a failure, that he looked down on her or was disappointed in Who She Was despite her supposedly being the Princess With The Blood Of The Goddess even though he adored her from the start, since the first time they met, and it only furthered their divide. At least, In The Beginning.

unfortunately, we live in a reality where Jack and Elsa have never met in any official media, and so, we cannot say if Elsa and Jack would absolutely react in a similar way to each other under the same circumstances, but this gives us plenty of room to work with!

Reconciliation

As this is a BOTW AU for Jelsa first and foremost, we will be applying aspects of Zelda's story into Elsa's to blend her better in the world, and if you've read my collaborative Jelsa project with Kris (more than you know) you may see that some of these aspects have already been implemented and work very well to create a compelling story.

Elsa, instead of struggling with Too Much Power she Fears and Cannot Control, is unable to summon them from inside of her, despite the Kingdom's safety entirely hinging on her mastery of it. This fills her with great distress and self-loathing, causing her to doubt herself and her own self-worth in relation to her powers (or lack thereof) in a similar way to her original portrayal, just for differing reasons, and she finds herself projecting these feelings onto Jack due to the pressure and stress of it all.

However, they do reconcile. She learns the error of her ways, apologizes for her mistake, and they start over with a clean slate. Finally, they begin to develop a bond, growing closer than they thought they would.

And of course, it wouldn't be BOTW without devastation and great loss, and so Elsa (like Zelda did IC), was unable to save her kingdom from The Great Calamity, losing everyone she cared about in the process. Including her beloved sister Anna.

And on the verge of losing Jack too, her desire to protect him—her Love—finally awakens the dormant power inside of her. To save his life, she places him in the Shrine of Resurrection while she goes to face the calamity alone… and would go on to contain it for the next 100 years.

However, she continues to hold on to hope that The Chosen Hero, her Appointed Knight, will Rise again one day, and finish what they started.

Sailor Moon Name Meanings: 10 Main Sailor Senshi Edition

Most of the names in Sailor Moon are packed full of meaning, so I've decided to do a series of posts examining each name's etymology! Let's start with the main Sailor Senshi themselves.

Usagi Tsukino: “Rabbit of the Moon”

Usagi’s name is packed full of symbolism, as it directly references the East Asian legend of the “rabbit on the moon.” If you look at the full moon and observe its darker areas contrasted against the white ones, you may see the shape of a rabbit standing over a mortar with a pestle. According to folklore, this rabbit is making anything from the elixir of life to simple mochi.

It’s not just Usagi’s name that references this legend. Her odango hairstyle is meant to resemble rabbit’s ears (although this is far more obvious with Chibiusa), and many of her belongings feature cute pictures of bunnies. Unlike real rabbits though, Usagi hates carrots!

Ami Mizuno: “Asian Beauty of Water”

Time to clear up a misconception I myself have spread in the past. Ami’s name does not mean “Friend of Water,” it actually means “Asian Beauty of Water” according to the kanji in her name. Although Rei is commonly seen as the traditional Japanese beauty of the bunch, Ami isn’t far behind!

Of course, “Water” is a reference to Sailor Mercury’s powers over water and its different forms (ice and gas/fog). Apart from having powers over water, Ami is shown to love water in her civilian life, being an avid swimmer. Finally, Mercury in Japanese is “Suisei,” or “Water Star.”

Rei Hino: “Spirit of Fire”

Rei’s name reflects her status as the most spiritual of the Senshi, being a miko who is capable of using special powers (her psychic and purification powers) even when she’s not transformed. “Spirit of Fire” even brings to mind one of her special abilities, which is divining the future by meditating and staring into flames.

Of course, the “Fire” also references how Sailor Mars is the Senshi of Flames and Passion, being the Sailor Senshi who has mastery over fire. Finally, Mars in Japanese is “Kasei,” or “Fire Star.”

Makoto Kino: “Sincerity of Wood”

“Makoto” can have a number of different meanings, and we don’t 100% for sure know which one Mako’s is because her name is in hiragana. However, the fandom has largely chosen to go with the meaning of “sincerity.” This is a very suitable name for Mako, as she is one of the most sincere and honest characters in the entire series.

“Kino” means “of wood.” Although Sailor Jupiter is commonly associated with electricity, her powers really encompass nature as a whole. In the manga/reboot anime, she has a number of attacks that involve plants. Finally, the Japanese name for Jupiter is “Mokusei,” or “Wood Star.”

Minako Aino: “Beautiful Child of Love”

Minako’s name is very straightforward, being a reference to the mythological goddess Venus- the Roman goddess of love and beauty. Out of all the Senshi, Minako/Sailor Venus by far has the most associations with the deity who is the namesake of their guardian planet. In Codename: Sailor V, she is even outright stated to be the incarnation of the goddess Venus.

Out of all the Senshi, Minako is the only one who does not have a reference to the Japanese name of her planet in her name. In Japanese, “Venus” is called “Kinsei,” which means “Metal Star.” Although this is referenced in her powers (in the manga/reboot anime, Venus uses her metallic chain as well as a sword to attack), the reason why it’s not reflected in her name is probably because she was the very first Sailor Senshi created and Naoko Takeuchi hadn’t hammered out the naming scheme yet.

Chibiusa: “Small Rabbit”

“Chibiusa” is actually a nickname given to the girl when she arrived in the 20th century; her birth name is “Princess Usagi Small Lady Serenity.” Introducing herself as “Usagi,” she quickly got the name “Chibiusa” to distinguish her from the first Usagi (who, unbeknownst to her at the time, was her mother). It’s an appropriate nickname, as it basically just means “the smaller Usagi.” The same symbolism behind Usagi’s name applies here as well.

Setsuna Meioh: “Moment Dark King”

“Setsuna” means “moment” or “instant,” which is fitting for a character so heavily associated with time. “Setsuna” also sounds very similar to “setsunai,” which while difficult to get an exact translation of, basically means a strong mix of happiness and sadness. Think nostalgia, bittersweetness, sweet sorrow, etc. Again, this is very fitting for Setsuna, who is noted by other characters to appear slightly sorrowful at all times but still carries out her duties with pride.

“Dark King” is a reference to the Roman god Pluto, the namesake of Sailor Pluto’s guardian planet and the god of the underworld. While Sailor Pluto is most often associated with time, she is also referred to as the “Senshi of the Underworld” and some of her attacks (such as Dead Scream) are related to the underworld. Also, “Dark King” starts a naming convention with the Outer Senshi (sans Hotaru) who all directly reference their planet’s mythological namesakes in their family names.

Haruka Tenoh: Distant Sky King

“Haruka” can have a few different meanings, but our Haruka’s name means “distant” or “far off” (Haruka’s name, like most of the Senshi, is written in hiragana instead of kanji, meaning that its exact meaning is ambiguous). This reflects her initially standoffish, aloof nature and how she first presents herself to the Inner Senshi.

“Sky King” is a reference to the Roman god Uranus, the namesake of Sailor Uranus’s guardian planet and the primordial deity who represents the sky. Sailor Uranus’s powers are related to wind and the sky, making this a fitting tribute.

Michiru Kaioh: Rising Sea King

“Michiru” is a name that has nuance to it. I used “rising” here, but it can also translate to “mature,” “complete,” etc. The impression that “Michiru” gives off is a fulfilment of growth, like hopes that have been nurtured. Of course, this is extremely fitting for our Michiru. Like the rest of the Outer Senshi, she is very mature and is initially further along in her development as a Senshi than the Inners. I also like the term “rising” in particular, as it gives off the imagery of ocean waves as well as hinting that Michiru’s maturation and growth is still ongoing.

“Sea King” is a reference to the Roman god Neptune, the namesake of Sailor Neptune’s guardian planet and the god of the ocean. Sailor Neptune has powers over the sea, making it obvious where Naoko Takeuchi made mythological connections.

Hotaru Tomoe: Firefly Sprouting From Earth

Unlike the other Outer Senshi, whose names have significance from Greek/Roman mythology, Hotaru’s name is rooted in Japanese symbolism. In Japanese folklore, fireflies are thought to be the carriers of the souls of the dead (more specifically, the souls of soldiers who died in war). This is very fitting symbolism for Sailor Saturn, the Senshi of Death and Rebirth; in the manga and Crystal, Hotaru is even shown carrying and guarding the souls of the Inner Senshi. Other symbolism for fireflies is that they are beautiful and burn bright, but are short-lived; this is again fitting for Hotaru in her original life, as her life was doomed to be cut short before she was fortunately reborn.

The ”earth” (as in “dirt,” not the planet Earth) kanji in “Tomoe” is a reference to the planet Saturn, which in Japanese is called the “Earth Star” ("Dosei"). The planet Saturn has been known since ancient times, whereas the planets beyond it were only discovered thanks to modern telescopes. This is reflected in their Japanese names, as Saturn follows the traditional Japanese planet naming scheme of “element + star” whereas Uranus, Neptune, and Pluto are named following the same Roman mythological naming convention that Western astronomers used (“Neptune” being “Sea King Star,” etc).

ok so first of all i haven't run any of this by @thelongforgottenrealm -- this is 100% hc'ing and therefore may or may not be in any way accurate, but id mentioned i was thinking abt this vs @forgottenroderick's coronation which i think was quite different (tho tbf he's had multiple crownings so they're probs pr old hat for him atp alkdjsflksdfj) eilia has only had the one

anyway! ok so i have this hc that maybe astaira, given its value system, maybe used some of the ancient anglo-saxon forms of government, so this is highly inspired by the witan's and its election of rulers, etc!

ASTAIRAN SELECTION OF THE FUTURE RULER

so my thought was that maybe you aren't just ~born to rule in astaira and that you are, in fact, chosen and must accept this choice given that its v much a role of service in their culture etc!! so, like the anglo-saxon aethelings, im thinking that there was a pool of candidates, so before her election, eilia was only the heiress presumptive rather than the heiress apparent bc it has to be voted and ratified by the witan/great council of astaira, a council made up of all the other leaders and magnates of astaira, each in turn repping the interests of their own ppl to the best of their ability etc

anyway! aethelings in early anglo-saxon culture are anyone born to a noble family (eventually it became just sons of the king, and that's usually how its translated now, but initially it was more!), but im thinking maybe for astaira its a slightly different qualification -- you have to have completed a trial of sortsans well as having having displayed your abilities by performing charitable acts and such on a big scale etc as well as having submitted your name to a list for consideration etc, that sort of thing! -- that way anyone no matter the rank of their family, can apply, but it also means you're not automatically in the pool even if you don't wanna be since its a srs responsibility etc! now, no question it'd def be easier to do this if you're already backed wealth and power etc but yeah!! here we are!!

so anyway! eilia's been trained for this her whole life, she wants it, she's good at it, she gets chosen. a representative is sent to her to invite her to take the crown for astaira's sake, and she of course accepts. this would def also have a public ceremony of her formally accepting the crown etc.

CROWNING

ok so i def picture her coronation as having taken place during the spring. everything is beautiful and green! t he and i do feel like there's a humility sort of aspect like they used to do so!! i also feel like they brought live, flowering frees into the palace and into whatever shrine in which she was crowned in the sight of the guardians/symbolically BY the guardians, etc and that everyone who came to witness was wearing like...flower and ivy crowns and such and there were garlands of flowers strung everywhere and babbling brook ran along the path from the castle to the shrine and birds were singing and it was all v lovely and v natural and v astairan etc

eilia's purification in which she is taken by the hand by a seeress who brings her to the brook in question which, having its mouth at the shrine, is considered a holy spring, and wearing just her shift w her hair unbound etc she is sort of dunked/bathed and lets all the old run away from her so she can paproach her new role as queen w a pure heart. the seeress then drapes her own cloak around eilia and, however poor it may be, it is a gift from astaira, and a mantel of state

next, still led by the seeress, eilia goes on foot without any shoes, cloaked in her new mantel of state and processes from the brook by her castle to the shrine. singers and musicians accompany her and those all around her may offer her any goods they like, all of which become artifacts of state and her reign and is is thus clothed rarhter than in any guady ornaments of gold and such -- woool and cotton and such things are what she wears, handmade by her ppl for her to wear as their leader

lots of these items are traditionally bracelets of flowers and vines, gloves to keep her warm on her walk, shoes, etc -- all of these meant to be the sort of thing ur common astairan would wear so that, no matter how guady her lifestyle might become, she will know what iis to spend a day clothed as an ordinary astairan is, and noen of it is intended to be rich or fine etc tho special care is often given to crafting such objects as a thank you to the new ruler etc. ba sically, the theme of the day is simplicity, and everything she is given must be white

throughout the day, she is obliged to ask for anything she might want. if she wishes to eat, if she wishes to sleep at the end of the day, whatever! she will spend the rest of her life giving orders, so today is for receiving them

when she reaches the shrine, which is totally open so everyone can see, etc, a humble bench is carried and she is obliged to sit there and hear the wishes of anyone who wishes to speak for her new reign. this can be literally anything! a tiny child can stand up and say they love kittnes! an old man can tell her that his crops are dead but his sheep are still fairing well! a student can wax poetical about philosophy!!! needless to say, this takes hours and hours and in some cases this part has gone on for days w the new ruler sleeping on the wooden bench only to wake the next morning to hear more, still obliged to beg for food from the ppl around etc until ppl stop coming up w things to say! it p robs does tend to be longer the worse the previous reign was bc there are more needs etc and, since i hc that eilia's dad was a pr good ruler, i imagine eilia's was relatively short

anyway, once that's finished, the seeress sends someone, called the herald of the seer, to the new ruler to take them by the hand and ask once again if they are still willing to take all this on!!!! if they decline after all that, there's no shame and they can return to their life etc.

if they still accept the charge -- which obv eilia did! -- the herald of the seer takes eilia by the hand and leads her into the shrine. there, she first asks the ppl to pray for her, then prays herself, and finally presents the gifts which the ppl of astaira have given her to the guardians as a symbolic gesture of the mutual relationship between ppl/ruler/guardians etc

now dressed only in her shift, again, eilia is clothed in the heavy robe of state which is, by design, quite physically hefty to represent the burden of rule

the bench is then carried into the shrine and, in the sight of all w the doors still flung open etc, eilia is crowed by the seer. the crown is also quite heavy for the same reason

now crowned queen, eilia processes back to the palace and is feted all the way w dancers and singers and poets

all are welcome to the palace, where live blooming trees reach towards the star-painted ceiling and a living stream has been brought inside, w the doors and windows all open and anyone who wishes to enter free to do so

anyway yeah obv none of this is canon! these were just some idea i had!!!

also def hc that the seeress who crowned eilia was ~also aine whom arthur later beheaded at kil-kennar so! that's fun!!

Miraculous Head-canons that I always add to my stories:

In honor of Chapter three Timey Wimey being written at a quick pace, here are some of my Miraculous Head-canons that I think are pretty cool. These are MY head-canons. You don’t have to agree with them and I respect that. Enjoy!

During winter, Marinette has to get warmth from any other miraculous holder or Chat Noir to stop falling into a two-year hibernation.

During Spring, the Miraculous mating season begins and doesn’t end till the end of February. During that time the Miraculous will boost the holder's hormones in order to attract potential mates and reproduce potential heirs to the miraculous. In order to counter the hormones there are two ways to get rid of the desire. One is fulfill the desire with the chosen mate or spend time near the miraculouses other half to lower hormones.

Ladybug holders are actually really rare and so hard to find. Those that are chosen to be Ladybugs are the most rare people to exist.

Marinette is a Moonkissed Ladybug which is the rarest of people and the most hardest to find. Most Ladybugs are Sunkissed people and represent the sun but Marinette is a Moonkissed Ladybug who represents the moon and night.

Because Marinette is the Miraculous Guardian she has the animal tendencies of all the Miraculouses under her care.

Marinette’s personality fits every one of the Miraculous which is why she was picked to be Guardian.

If the monkey miraculous weirder loses their weapon then no one but the monkey miraculous weirder can pick it up since the weapon weighs 17,550 kilograms. So only monkey king can pick it up.(From Journey to the West Monkey King Origins)

All Miraculouses in the Miracle Box have an ancient history behind them and the Miraculous Guardian must learn about it to understand the kwamis.

Each Miraculous had a kwami, a god that represented a concept. These kwamis were based off of an animal and held the same animal instincts and tendencies that their animal parts held.

The Mother Box was the very first miracle box ever to be made, inside it held the most powerful magical jewels to ever exist. In the beginning, it was just creation and destruction, Yin and Yang. But over time new concepts were born into the world and so new kwamis were created as well. In order to protect these ancient powerful jewels, the Miraculous had ancient magic surrounding it used to camouflage the Miraculous so the pieces of jewelry can never be recognized. Each piece of jewelry had a certain cultural aspect to it, and each piece held its own uniqueness.

Black Cat holders are actually supposed to be well respected by the Guardians but due to the bad history of past holders the Guardian Order fears them instead.

The Horse, Fox, and Peacock Miraculous are all known for having the most beautiful and alluring holders since they are naturally beautiful animals

The Ladybug, the Bee, and the Butterfly fall into the beautiful but don’t touch category of holders, their holders are beautiful but are stubborn when it comes to lovers

Bee holders have multiple lovers, and have a hard time picking their mate

Butterfly Holders have trouble trusting potential mates due to fragile nature

Ladybug Holders are stubborn when admitting they’re in love due to their loyalty to their duty.

Black Cats always end up with their Ladybugs, and refuse to date or mate with any other type of Miraculouses(Though there’s a rare case when a potential Ladybug is given the wrong Miraculous, so the Black Cat will seek out their rightful Ladybug no matter what Miraculous they wear).

Fox holders will always prefer Turtle holders over other potential mates due to the Fox being comfortable with the Turtle’s kind and mellow nature.

The top layer of the Miracle Box(Bee, Turtle, Fox, Butterfly, Peacock, Ladybug, and Black Cat) are the overseer’s of the other Miraculouses on the bottom and are more experienced in having more holders.

Snake holders are always trying to court the Ladybug but the Black Cat always reminds of their place showing off their power and loyalty to the Ladybug.( Ladybugs see Snakes as potential mates but will always chose the Black Cat).

Black Cat’s will scent mark their Ladybugs.

If a teenager gets a Miraculous, Animalistic traits will only start appearing when teenager starts puberty at age of 16. Mating side effects will not start till teenager officially turns 18 or 19.

Other Miraculouses besides the Fox, Turtle, Ladybug, Butterfly, and Peacock can mate with different types of Miraculous holders as they do not have soulmate lines like the Ladybug, Black Cat, Fox, Turtle, Butterfly, and Peacock.

Butterfly and Peacock’s can either have a platonic relationship or a romantic one, as the Butterfly only trusts the Peacock.

Alix Kubel is a part of the Rabbit Miraculous Descendant Family, her Grandmother and her Mother were previous Holders and Alix is the chosen heir which is why she was given the watch on her 14th birthday.

Alix’s dad never knew his wife was a Miraculous holder or that he married into a Descendant Family until his wife died and her will explained everything to him. So he knew his Daughter was going to be a Rabbit holder.

When he started receiving letters from his future daughter he learned that his daughter needed to become friends with the next Guardian, and that was the little girl that Alix hung out with named Marinette. So Marinette and Alix are very close since the Guardian and the Rabbit holder need to be close due to their important duties.

Rabbit Miraculous holders are known as the Time Guardians, they protect and watch over the Timelines. Which is why they are supposed to be close to the Guardian of the Miracle Box.

Alix’s dad knew that Marinette was going to become the next Guardian and that Alix was going to become Bunnyx along with all of their friends becoming Miraculous Holders.

Alix’s dad met his mom when she came crashing through a Burrow on top of him, he thought she was wearing a costume. The two became instant lovers even if they did mock each other.

Rabbit holders are known to be the hardest to court, Rabbit’s do not like being catched or chased. Which is why Rabbits usually chose to court normal humans instead of Miraculous holders.

Sabine is close friends with Nino’s Mom and Alix’s dad.

Marinette meets Nino and Alix first in Kindergarten , then she meets Kim, Max, Ivan and Nathaniel in 2nd grade, Juleka, Mylene, and Rose in 5th grade.

Marinette and Marc are cousins

Marinette has known her friends for years which is why they are deeply bonded to Marinette and made into Miraculous holders.

Kwamis will always brag about their holders

Marinette is constantly designing, and is always creating outfits either for her friends, herself or the kwamis.

The Black Cat Miraculous and the Dog Miraculous will never get along, as it’s in their nature to be frenemies. Plagg and Barkk do not get along.

Roosters and Peacock holders dance to impress their mates.

Orriko will crow at the rising sun

Trixx likes to sleep on Alya’s face

Stompp hates the color red and will charge at it. (When transformed Minotaurox will charge at the color red)

Roarr and Plagg have cat fights to show off dominance

Fox holders will sometimes try to seduce the Ladybug just to create Chaos for the Black Cat.

Monkey holders will create Chaos for fun.

Longg like to lay on the heater during winter

All Miraculouses have a Camoflouge mode(like Rena Furtive)

Peacock Holders skin will always be a light blue or violet when transformed.

If a Ladybug is killed, the balance within the team will break and the holders will lose their bond to the dead Ladybug leaving issues in the team.

Master Fu actually sneaks into the Burrow sometimes to get sneak peeks at the future but Older Bunnyx always has to chase him out with a broom.

Master Fu is a silly Guardian that sometimes will drink tea during battle without a care in the world.

Miss Hound and Chat Noir actually get along which is against their nature and surprises Marinette

Plagg and Marinette are actually very good friends but don’t have a deep bond like he has Adrien

Marinette takes the kwamis on field trips whenever she can.

When Marinette is alone she sometimes wears Ladybug clothing for fun, just because she likes her spots.

Ladybugs hair is lighter and more raven while Marinette’s hair is more dark with blue reflections.

Ladybug will flirt or tease Chat Noir at any chance given.(She’ll even pun sometimes)

Master Fu is number one LadyNoir shipper

LadyNoir will always act like a married couple

Marichat will always act like they’re dating when they’re not.

Marinette is half Chinese, half French and half Italian. So when she’s really angry she’ll curse in Italian.

When Ziggy is scared she’ll scream and then go still and fall over

Solace, In Silence: Chapter I

started writing a Sleep Token story a while ago and wanted to share it with you all. :]

Part I: Take a Bite of Me

Chapter One: Calcutta

“I’m whole again for just a moment, ‘till the morning comes.”

The city below glowed and shifted, full of life and people consumed by whatever matters peppered their realities. The streets twisted like a maze that stretched on forever. Here in this vast expanse, I lay alone, for I am nothing, if not a disgrace, a stain on the very face of this earth. I serve no one, I have no purpose, I am a ghost. I spend my days rotting away in my room; I dare not show my face to the world. And so, in my self-inflicted isolation, the darkness that blanketed my tired soul remains. 

The Earth remained beautiful, unafflicted and unhindered by my absence. I've given nothing but can't bring myself to die; I bleed from every scar and wound on my body, whether seen or unseen, physical or emotional. Despite this, the pain will never be enough to satisfy whatever twisted force tethers me to this life. Even with every last drop of sweet crimson being sapped from my body, I could not please the powers that be. In life's grand and beautiful tapestry, I am invisible and irredeemable. My nights are filled with tears, sobbing until my throat is raw and my eyes are puffy and red. I am tired. As darkness fell and the city lights battled the night for control, I remained unchanged as the streets filled with restless and working souls. Finally claimed by a restless sleep, enveloping dreams swept over me. Ones I couldn't hope to understand, Horrifying and yet, beautiful. I saw creatures and entities created and mutated by my own suffering and misery. 

Amidst these terrors, an unfathomable figure appeared, almost biblical in nature; it towered over my broken form, clad in robes and armour, with unfurled wings at its back. It couldn't be labelled by gender, seemingly shifting between states at will, never entirely solid, never quite human. in its hands, an apple stained an abyssal black within temptation, a golden liquid trickling down the sides the only reprieve from this unending void. It had taken the form of an angel; its intentions, however, seemed far from holy. It was a far cry from the celestial guardians many had grown to respect and fear equally. It raised its arms above its head and joined them together in a gesture of prayer; at this moment, as if some outside force had possessed my body, my hands joined in prayer with them. I felt like a passenger within my body while in motion, a mere spectator until I was thrust back into control; feeling a sense of security, I joined the beast in prayer. For a moment, the universe fell to a standstill. In this infinitesimally small moment, fate revealed my purpose to me. I was to serve as a mortal Vessel. It wanted someone to cater to its every whim. I was to be its muse, and for the first time, I felt truly alive and filled with purpose. I had finally been chosen. I revelled in its presence for what felt like years, centuries spent basking in the ethereal essence of this deity. 

At the peak of this euphoria, everything collapsed atop me, and I awoke again in my filthy Apartment, the sounds of the city slowly filling my ears as my vision began to clear; I was alone once again. I shot up in a panic as my eyes darted around the room, desperately searching for any sign of what I’d just experienced was real. My face felt hot, and my legs felt weak; I felt an emotion rise within me that I hadn't felt in years: despair. My vision hazy with the emotions swirling in my mind, I wept and cried and begged for my saviour to return to me, to assure me it wasn't a dream, that my purpose hadn't been revealed as some sick joke by the powers that be. 

I can't hold myself together anymore, so please; I need you. I yelled, screamed, and cried out for them to return to me and show me the warmth I had been denied for so long. In a desperate plea, Scarlet ran through my veins and down my arms as they wept; I could not live with the agony of my purpose being so frivolously given and then taken away from me. This apparent betrayal utterly crushed my soul. My sheets, stained with blood, clung to me as I spent my final waking hours bleeding from every wound on my body, seen or unseen. That night, as I slipped into unconsciousness, hoping never to wake again, suddenly, that warmth I had experienced so very briefly overwhelmed me. I stood before them once again; my saviour had returned to me. My breath escaped me, and my legs buckled.  They were real; they had come back and swept me up in their embrace once more. I fell to my knees and began to pray; my faith in them solidified, my eyes welled, and my emotions began to overwhelm me. I began to wail; my soul had known no greater joy until now. I cried till my throat gave out, and my eyes went dry as I had wept till I had no more tears to give.

Aura Guardian.

Despite the prestigious nature of his title, Ash knew that he was nowhere close to the most powerful person in the room. (If the fact that he was currently kneeling in the dirt like a simple dog hadn't given that away already.) He dipped his head lower, smelling the dull burn of dust as if floated up from the castle floor tiles and into his nose. As he kneeled below the throne of Prince Gary Oak, Ash felt his hands shake like the legs of a baby deerling.

“Oh, here you are,”

As Gary spoke, his voice was smooth and calm, as if this was a casual meeting, rather than what they both knew it was. Besides, Ash couldn't help but notice the prince; he was clearly just pretending to have not noticed the familiar man that knelt before him. He had felt those green eyes on the back of his neck from the second he had first bowed.

“Yes,” he responded, finding himself unable to read into Gary's intentions through even his powers. Clearly the Psychic was no less aware of Ash's powers than Ash himself was.

“You can look up you know,” Gary said, his smirk coming into view as Ash obeyed.

The prince was draped over a throne, his bodyguards discarded into side rooms for the meeting. They both knew they weren't necessary. Ash wasn't the type to attack for no reason, and Gary wasn't the type to let someone beat him.

”You know,“ Gary continued, kicking his legs over the armrest of his throne like this was some sort of meeting of friends, ”I've always wondered about you Aura Guardians, does it feel weird to speak?“

Ash paused, narrowing his eyes for a moment and letting the glow of Gary's aura appear in his eyes. It was clear and purple, much stronger than that of a regular person.

”What do you mean by that?“ he finally asked, suddenly aware of how very small he looked kneeling on the floor in the giant room that was the throne room of the Viridian castle. He made a move to get up, but he felt a force that he strongly suspected to be Gary's psychic powers weighing him down. It wasn't a lot, but it was enough for him to know his place.

Gary laughed again, and Ash had a sudden flash of what the prince would look like surrounded by royal friends, each cheering him on and laughing along with him. But that was not the case here. Here, the high pitched snort was only echoed by the empty arches of the hall.

”Nothing bad, let me assure you,“ Gary finally said, though the pressure on Ash's back increased as Gary looked down at the Aura Guardian, ”You're all so used to talking telepathically and all, I've heard of Guardians who go years without actually speaking,“

Ash felt the urge to point out that Gary could have chosen to speak telepathically if he had wanted to, but he thought better of it, instead saying, ”Well, I'm not that sort of Guardian then,“

”Do the words feel heavy on your tongue?“

”Excuse me?“

”Oh nothing,“

The pressure on Ash's shoulders lessened, and he took the chance to quickly clamber to his feet. (Even if the chance had been given by accident, he was taking it.) He looked nervously at Gary, but as the smirk on his face had not yet disappeared, Ash was pretty sure that he had not overstepped anything.

He decided to get right to the point.

“Did you call me here for a job, or can I go?” He asked. Outside of the room, he could all but see the aura of his partner Pokemon pacing back and forth. Electric and yellow, it was unlike anything that most Aura Guardians kept by their side, but the power of the tiny Pokemon had been known to get him jobs in the past, so he hadn't questioned it when the prince had called him to his feet.

...Which was why he was so taken aback when Gary shook his head.

“No I can't go, or no I don't have a job,” Ash said, completely aware that his words had come out as more of a statement than a question.

“Oh,” Gary paused, like he hadn't thought about what he was actually answering to, and then waved his hand and continued to grin, “No, to both,”

Ash once again attempted to search the man for intentions, but once again found his attempts blocked by the psychicforce of his opponent. ”What am I here for then?“ He asked, still blank. (Oh, why hadn't he brought Pikachu in with him?) Maybe it was as Korina had told him. Maybe he DID rely too much on his ability to feel the thoughts of others, as he was once again taken aback when Gary next spoke.

“Can't a guy catch up with an old friend?” Gary asked, somewhat exasperated, “Maybe I missed you!”

Ash felt his expression contort.

Gary was saying this.

The man who had all but shunned him, and others like him, from the kingdom. The man who had been the one to proclaim the powers of Aura Guardians quote, ”last century,“ in their application when asked about it in the courts.

But yet...

Ash also knew that this was the man who had been forced to be strong for his people when they had lost pieces of their kingdom to the Rockets. This was the man who had refused to take the name ”king“ out of respect for his fallen grandfather. This was the man who had done his best to protect even the youngest of the Pokemon when the Rockets had entered the stables.

But when the positive stories from the people shifted to the good memories of Ash's childhood, growing up all but hand in hand with the young ruler, laying side by side in the courtyard, and picking partner Pokemon as friends...

Ash felt his frown grow larger.

“If you missed a friend, why was I kneeling in the dirt at your feet?”

Gary paused, and frowned at him, the air twisting with psychic powers so strong that Ash could actually see them as an extension of Gary's aura. Ash winced as the air squeezed at his shoulders, a clear warning that stepping out of line would get him right back where he had started.

“You don't have a right to question me, I'm your prince ,”

“You tried to banish me!” Ash protested, flinging his hand out to the side in exasperation.

Gary waved his hand as if that part of the past didn't matter a bit. ”And it didn't work! Besides-,“ he stepped a little closer (and was it Ash's imagination, or had the man grown since they had last been in close proximity), ”I promise I regret it,“ he breathed.

There was an awkward moment of silence, in which Ash found himself nearly chest to chest with the ruler, who smirked down at him like his confusion was the funniest joke in the world. In the corner of the rooms, planted as if they were just a beauty of nature and not a tool of aura, time flowers shimmered, as if begging Ash to remember the past that they could not. He was certain they knew something he did not, but he didn't pay them any mind.

“Listen man,” Ash said, taking a step back and sweeping his cloak around himself with a frown, “I like having friends as much as the next guy, but if you're not giving me a job to do, I don't see a reason I should stay here,” Ash turned and began to walk towards the door, the air suddenly absence of forces as if the prince was just as surprised as Ash felt.

“Don't leave!” Gary blurted out a touch of that young boy that Ash had once known, clearly audible in his nasally voice and visible in his wide green eyes (which only widened further as he processed that he had spoken aloud). He smacked a hand to his mouth.

In the desperation in his voice, Ash could tell that they had both momentarily forgotten how easily the man could crush him. The air instantly electrified with the psychic energy of Gary's aura again, and Ash cringed at the flash of power. And yet, he couldn't help but notice that he was still unharmed.

If this had been any other ruler and Ash had turned them down in this way, he was sure that he would have been back on his knees and begging long before he had turned to leave. And alright, maybe that was an insanely low bar to clear, but Gary had in fact cleared it.

He felt a spark of the only feeling he had had with Gary in his chest as the prince struggled to regain his composure and threatening aura. (Which had to have been difficult if you weren't really all that much older than your average stable boy.) It was, however, clearly difficult to hide the true nature of an aura from an Aura Guardian, and Ash caught snips of Gary's mind rush by him as the prince struggled to contain his thoughts in his barrier.

“Again I ask,” Ash started, though the air seemed to have frozen hard as ice around him, holding him in place, “Why did you make me kneel for you if this was a friendly meeting?”

Gary's face was a horrible mish mash of pinks and reds, and Ash couldn't help the tiny smirk that he found forming on his lips. Oh boy. This was even more complicated than he had thought it would be.

”Okay, maybe a little too friendly,“ Gary admitted. He raised his chin like his suddenly serious expression would hide the blush on his face, ”Besides, a royal can't drop formalities like that for no reason,“

”Never heard that before,“ Ash grumbled, mentally picturing the multitudes of royals who had told him something similar, right before he found himself all but kissing their boots for them. How was he to have known that Gary was going to be any different? How was he to have known that he wasn't going to be worse?

Gary ignored him and continued, ”If I had invited you here just to talk, you wouldn't have ever responded to my summons,“

Ash chose not to retort. There was never a choice in appearing in front of a royal or not, if they had been your childhood best friend or not, it didn't matter in the face of the law.

”So I had to do what was expected of me, since you did what was expected of you,“

”I tasted dust, yes,“ Ash said, his frown back. Why was Gary purposely making this worse?

The hall was silent, and the air clinging to Ash's body dissolved back into a breathable density.

”And I'm... sorry about that,“ Gary whispered, so quiet he was almost impossible to hear, ”I didn't know you-,”

He stopped, but Ash had already felt the truth behind his words. Ash reached out in his mind, and found that the barriers had disappeared, leaving the intentions of his former friend bare and open.

He hadn't lied.

This was nothing like the summons of previous kings and queens.

Then again, Gary wasn't technically a king, why had Ash expected him to act like one?

'Uh, because he was a few steps away from walking on top of you,' his thoughts told him, 'that's not exactly a thing friends do to each other,'

He looked Gary in his wide green eyes, entirely unable to read him, despite the suddenly open shot into his heart. For some reason, that only served to increase Ash's curiosity. Maybe it was idiotic, but he felt his heart speed up.

Despite everything, he still wanted to know this man.

Maybe Gary had a point with this.

“Besides,” Gary spluttered, clearly trying to save face, “Who wouldn’t want you on your knees at their feet?”

Or maybe not.

Ash smacked a hand into his face.

“Are you free tomorrow?”

Outside, the bodyguards couldn’t quite tell if it had been the Aura Guardian or the prince who had spoken, but if any of them had been able to feel the auras in the room, they would have heard the resounding ‘yes,’ from the minds of the two men, ‘for you,’

Some quick Aeris facts for y'all before I go to bed:

-Really likes lemon-flavored candies and lemon cake. Also a big fan of those fluffy donut holes with powdered sugar on top of them

-Very soft-spoken and usually mumbles when he talks, if he talks at all (yeah I based a lot of him off the Guardian in-game, but the Guardian's voice in game is super deep and that always takes me out LOL). He's also very blunt and has a hard time not sounding either deadpan or having a slightly off cadance to his voice, and most of his 'snappy comebacks' are from action movies or watching other guardians. Because his humour is extremely dry and he has a soft spot for puns, its sometimes hard to tell if this is deliberately done for comedic effect or copied because he's trying to come off as cool

-Will also infodump about his friend's interests and studies if prompted and in a good mood, and enjoys being infodumped to in turn. It gives him a starting-off point for him to engage in a conversation without Ghost's or Marcie's help

-Hates the popularity and 'placed on a pedestal' nature of being The Guardian(tm) and cares very little about fitting in socially, but also really wants to please those he looks up to/not upset people.

-Cannot sit normally on anything. He's a Hunter for a reason. He has to crouch-perch on everything and be on top of the tallest thing in the room. Half the time its just to see that he can do it

-Ghost is still officially named Ghost because he's got a Thing about names being special and also because neither of them can settle on one they like (I've called him Hoarfrost in the past but they are STILL debating on that). Also, he prefers to go by 'Guardian' because 'Aeris' is close to 'Eris' and in his reasoning, 'she had the name first so she gets seniority rights'

-Actually really likes tactile stimuli. He won't initiate physical affection much, but you bet your ass he's gonna cuddle if given the chance, though the person he usually only actively cuddles with is his sister, Marcie, or Ghost

-Has an apartment in the Tower that he never uses. Pretty much lives in the Eliksni quarter exclusively bc they don't pick up on the fact that he's autistic as fast as human people and he really likes that

-He's got Archer Muscles(tm) and is pretty pleased with it. He doesn't think much of his appearance often, but thats one of the few aspects of it that he's proud of

-Crow is one of his best friends, and while they had a whole tense thing with Crow having a crush on him pre regaining his memories that Aeris couldn't reciprocate and felt guilty for, they're still on pretty good terms (thats a whole other seperate thing I can get into tho)

-Actually hates fusion rifles, but was too polite to correct Saint when he said Aeris's favorite gun was a fusion rifle so

-Sexuality is like. Aro/ace/gay. He's aro for sure, and most of the time he barely thinks about or desires sex with people, but when he does it's only with men, his taste in which is...questionable, most of the time.

-(Misraaks. Taniks, if he had the chance. Drifter. You get the point.)

-Also, he's a bottom and likes to be shoved around bc of afformentioned 'doesnt like being treated like the Chosen One' shtick

-Pre death and rez: He's the result of a cocky, boastful human man getting frisky with an Awoken warrior. Said man married for power later, and was VERY unhappy when Aeris was dumped on his doorstep as a kid, esp. since he got his wife pregnant already (that was Marcie)

-Aeris's mother was named Iliya, he was brought to term, born in the Reef, and dumped on his dad bc his dad said they wouldn't need contraceptives bc Awoken and 'normal humans' couldn't interbreed. She pretty much birthed him out of spite

-He DID go back to the Reef a few times as a diplomat from Earth (his dad was politically savvy, if a douchebag), but I doubt his mom ever bothered with him much. Marcie was the only person he was close to, as he was her older brother and he ADORED her, and that was a bond that persisted even after their death and rez together

-she died in the Skolas Incident btw so no meeting her son again post-rez for her.

-This is something that Mara knew vaguely about, bc while Awoken/Humans are viable, they're really rare in the Reef. That she knew of his birth pre-death and who his mother was is part of the reason Aeris doesn't like her- it weirds him out. The only info that he got about himself pre-rez was from Marcie's diary (which was on her corpse when they were rezzed) was that the swearing woman underneath him in a rusted-out shelter in the cold of Old Russia was his half sister and that his father was a no-good whore, so the fact that someone out there knows of the other half of his family...it bothers him

-Despite that, he still has an instinctual connection to the Reef and a longing to fit in with it and gets really shy when Petra calls him 'cousin', since he's not quite right enough to stick in with Humans and too boring to be Awoken back on Earth, so it makes him feel included

The Sheikah Oath & Devotion.

   THE SHEIKAH; They are a mysterious and secretive tribe with pointed ears, red eyes and shadow magic abilities. They are the chosen guardians of the Goddess Hylia and were sent to be the protectors and guides of the descendants of her mortal incarnation, the Royal Family of Hyrule.

   Since the very beginning when Hylia made herself known, the Sheikah had been chosen by the Goddess to be her protector. The first of the Sheikah Tribe sealed the rest of their fate by taking an oath to the Goddess to protect her mortal form for eternity along with the Master Sword and the Triforce. This sent the Sheikah Tribe down an endless path of pain, bloodshed, sacrifice–where they’re repeatedly used and then cast aside. However, despite knowing this, they can never escape their fate. 

   Loyalty, fealty, devotion are repeatedly trained and conditioned into the Sheikah when they’re young. As keepers of the legends past down repeatedly through Hyrule, legends that are repeatedly proven true, and those whose fates are tied deeply with the Royal Family they continue the pattern of abuse unable to break the chain. To do so, in their eyes, will doom an entire Kingdom and world to a fate that they had sworn to help prevent. 

   They’re people who see the greater good more beneficial than their own lives. 

   For this reason, each member born into the tribe is sworn into the oath and then trained for the future of serving under the Royal Family of Hyrule. They’re trained to fight, to know the legends, to know the depths of the oath their people have upheld for generations without a single bit of waver. They’re trained as shadows, as those who exist beneath the Royal Family. Intended to be silent and unseen but a force when there is danger. Repeatedly lessening their own existence so that they can protect the Royal Family unseen from the shadows. Their lives are meant to be disposable if it means protecting Hylia’s mortal form. 

   This vow to the Royal Family has long since evolved to serving as more than just their protectors. 

   As their numbers fill in the ranks of the army, as they grow closer to those in power, giving their lives for Hyrule as well is just something that evolves naturally. To pick up their weapons and fight when asked to, when Hyrule and its people are threatened, when someone just asks for help–they give without hesitation. It’s the nature of who they have been trained to be, those who give without hesitation because they’re asked to. 

   They don’t know how to do anything else when they’re raised from the start to do that. 

   They’re reckless with their lives, smart in battle, defiant and determined in the face of those that question their loyalty. Stubborn to fight till the very end, no matter how grave the threat and no matter the danger it poses to them. To protect and serve till their very last breath has become the nature of their tribe. 

   And more often than not they’re more inclined to fall in battle rather than die from old age despite the length the Sheikah lives tend to be. 

   Even in death however, they still continue to serve. 

   The Sheikah believe that when they die their souls return to Hylia to continue to safeguard and protect her and the Royal Family. Their souls, tied to hers and the entirety of her bloodline, continue to watch over her for eternity with devotion. 

   Though what can be seen as blind faith and loyalty to most is something that the Sheikah hold very dear to themselves. To them, it’s what gives their lives and their sacrifices purpose in the end. More often than not they have a rather close bond with the Royal Family regardless, their ancestors holding high positions of power within the Royal army. Although this position often ends up working against them just as much. 

   They’re not ignorant to the fate their tribe often suffers. Repeatedly torn down and cut through the years. They’re not blind to what serving does to them. They’re far from stupid. 

   But they would rather continue to try, continue to give, continue to defend everyone because they truly do believe that the greater good outweighs the risk to their own lives. They Sheikah believe in fate and destiny. 

   And destiny has repeatedly proven to them that their sacrifices have some purpose in the end.

So yesterday I brought up the idea of writing a dragon rider/fantasy AU and come up with basic ideas/headcanons for it. I'm here this morning to do just that, starting with Simon and his dragon Brightfire because I'm biased, obviously lol

Simon and Brightfire Headcanons

Simon

1. Was (supposedly) abandoned as a baby on the steps of the Dragon's Keep because of a deformity of his skin.

2. He has patches of scales on various parts of his body, including his face which is why he wears the mask in this AU.

3. Lives in Dragon's Keep, serving as guardian to the hatchery, but is every so often commanded to go out and do work for Nova (the dragon queen who raised him), which he does gladly, as it's mostly spying or the VERY rare occasional assassination.

4. Is known as the Dragon Keeper because of his position, as the only human to live in Dragon's Keep. People have also taken to calling him the Ghost of Dragon's Keep, as some folks believe he's not even really alive because of his quiet and somewhat unnerving nature.

5. Was raised by Nova alongside other hatchlings, so he sees the youngest dragons as his siblings. He respects the older dragons, viewing them as uncles, aunts, and cousins.

6. While most respect Simon for his position, others see him as a sort of pariah, someone who rejected his own humanity to live alongside the scaled, fire breathing beasts.

7. Not so secretly admires Princess Lyra, heir to the throne of Athana, who treats Simon like anyone else, and is his best/only human friend at the beginning of the story.

8. Is the last of the group to get a dragon, as he feels he doesn't deserve one and he doesn't feel like they should be used that way. He doesn't mind that Riders exist, he just thinks there's a few ethical issues surrounding it.

9. As the closest to the dragons, he knows the most about them (how they think, how their culture is structured, etc), and he knows their stories and myths. He's remarkably tight lipped about it, unless given permission from Nova to give this information to his fellow Riders.

10. Is chosen by Brightfire due to his bloodline and the parallels between them...

Brightfire

1. After Nova, he's probably the oldest dragon in existence.

2. Was the first dragon to ever be ridden by a human, and together they started the Riders.

3. According to legend, he and his Rider used the last of their power to imprison a great evil that threatened the kingdom, and potentially the world, so everyone at first thinks he's dead.

4. Bright has lived as mostly a wild dragon since his Rider died, losing most of his "human" side and living/thinking more like an animal for the past two millenia.

5. Was also raised by Nova, though he isn't biologically hers. Like Simon, he still feels a sense of loyalty to her.

6. Hasn't made an appearance in two millenia and most people think he's dead, though he often showed up in Simon's dreams carrying a dire warning.

7. While all dragons have a sort of telepathy, Bright can project his thoughts and feelings into others around him, not just his Rider. In a sort of mirror to this, Simon can understand all dragons, regardless of whether or not their Rider is present, while other Riders can only understand their own individual mount.

8. Has a hard time trusting most humans, but is deadly loyal to Simon and, a little later, princess Lyra. He also grows to care deeply for Price, Gaz, and Soap.

9. His fire is white, with streams of gold and silver in it.

10. He technically should be the biggest dragon in existence, after Nova, due to having unlimited space and food, but because of his fractured mind, Bright's growth is paused until he meets and has his first flight with Simon.

Breaking down my Mc's (2/3)

Since I've recently done Hunter I thought I'd take a break before going onto Bluebell.

This is what I originally meant to post.

Kyle;

Once again starting with their backstory Kyle's has a few dark turns. Due to where he lived and his size it made him a prime target for a species of big bird to carry him away. With his people's belives the elders in his tribe who are meant to protect him would let him go on his own leading to more bird attacks as his curios nature would lead him to end up far away enough from adults for the birds to take the chance at a meal.

Having a busy but caring mother he was given his dragon cape, a symbol to Kyle for resilance and courage as using it he was able to scare away the big birds. Yet, this leads into an issue that will follow Kyle almost everywhere as even when he was too young to properly realize it his mother was pushing him into becoming a healer. Since healers were the ones in thier orinal group that wore capes. This wouldn't stop his curios nature as when around four he'd run off to join his dad on a trip. Being found too late to turn around immedatly he indirectly caused their shipwreak as his dad was so focused on keeping Kyle safe it clouded his judgment of the situation where the safest thing to do was wait the storm out on the ocean.

When shipweaked Kyle was sent to find help as his dad was too injured to move much. However, by the time Kyle found help his dad had been finished by a flock of large birds known to hunt the shores during storms for food. Being so young he couldn't remember which island he was from leading him to being adopted by a high ranking family who would actually accept him.

This new life wouldn't be much easier. Despite the change of location meaning attacks from the big bird were less going from open plans to forest it was pretty clear he wasn't 'normal'. His warm nature while at first set him up great for working with animals and around the tribe it also made him work great with people older than him. This didn't go unoticed since at a young age his new dad start to try and raise Kyle up to take over the tribe, even if Kyle had no intrest in it. This attention also put him at ods with his older sister who is by nature more sly and agressive than him. Being given what she wants only made her see Kyle as an obstacle in her way rather than a younger sibling. With Tui being against Kyle this lead his older brother to jump in as his protector. This lead Kyle into having a dad who only seemed to care about what he can do for the tribe, an older brother who acted as his guardian than his brother and a sister who would do anything to dethrone Kyle form a throne he never wanted to begin with.

From a young age Kyle has been given expectations for what people wanted from him. A healer, a leader, someone to protect or someone to fight. This expectation plus his smaller size made his dad even more protective over him causing him to have less freedom than most kids his age as he was forced to spend more time around the tribe and thus learn more about their life and how to lead them.

When he hit the age he would have a ceremony of him reaching 10 the magic used only spelled fire and and destruction in his near future. One his dad tried to hide from everyone else while trying to avoid it. Later that year he was picked by the healers to be a part of a choosing ceremony for a type of power given to a few selected people. Heading to the main island he was chosen for the role related to the air symbol due to his connection to the element. Unawear he could refuse he accepted it much to his sisters anger. Feeling like he had gotten what she had wanted she turned angry as Kyle was once again forced into a role he hadn't wanted for himself.

His sister then startd to burn their tribe down and killed their dad, theatining to kill him if he ever returned focing Kyle to abandon everything he'd known.

At this stage Kyle has been under peoples own expectations for him with his own wants put to the side. Has been raised to think about what others want more than what he wants for himself. While traviling with pirates this veiw is challanged by a pirate getting him to help her design a tarot deck in return she would fix his capes protections. As they worked together Kyle would be forced to ask what it is he wants for himself. Oneday he woke up to find she had gone leaving him with a fixed cape and the question of what he wanted. While at the time he would've said he wanted her, looking back he thinks that's why she left. Because he needed to stop looking for others to find his own wants.

Then we have a split like with Hunter;

When the Mc Kyle finds the magic shop he starts to learn magic from his aunt. The question on what he wants is brought up again as he slowly learns what he really wants is to learn more. Find out about how magic works, learn more about birds and animals, to find the awnser to the questions that used to keep him up at night as a child. As he grew he decided he wanted to go the masqurade to interact with people to have fun. This dession is how he'd meet Asra. Someone Kyle can question and can get questioned back someone he can learn from and teach at the same time. While at the first meeting Asra would be able to connect Kyle to the element air being the element of freedom and curiosity as Kyle would be unapologetically himself the entire time. It wouldn't take long for them to start to bound both over the curiosity over the unknown and magic but also through Kyle's ability to connect to others without the burdan of commitment, with the only commitment being to be in that moment with him.

When the plague hit Kyle would want to help, the comment about it taking kids first would be something Kyle would know too much. Kids and the old those weakest. While he wouldn't think he could cure to the plague he would want to do what he can to help.

Once brought back he would be quick to open up to Asra falling back on his gentle nature when he can't remember anything. Being one of my faster learning Mc's due to his curiosity in what he doesn't know. Unlike the other two having less fear of what he doesn't know. Also being the Mc to get into the most trouble, climbing up the shelf to get something without having a plan to climb down, wanting to go ouside and join Asra in market trips even when he's still sensitive to the sounds, sights and smells and in general being more curios. This does lead him to becoming quiet smart as he knows a bit about a lot of diffrent things. Never taking the fact he doesn't know the awnser as an excuse but as a chance to learn more.

However, he has learned from how people see him to use it to his advantage. Seeing a small person in a childish cape it's easy to assume their weaker and more easy target. This is further from the truth than he'd show. Acting small and adorable because he enjoys being able to be less serious. Yet, he's aways keeping his eyes open to what is going on around them. Able to quickly pick up on people's intentions from how they present themselves and act, I.E Muriel is big and scary but he leans forward and doesn't make any attempt to show his size giving Kyle the sense he's not as likely to turn around and attack him. Unlike Lucio who's stance is more bold and assertive and who openly shows his power at every chance he can. Or even Nadia who looks intimidating but holds herself in a regal posture and who makes it clear by her words she's more focused on showing she's sharp minded and not about to roll over. Letting Kyle know she isn't likely to turn around and attack him but also isn't about to let anything go unoticed. I could do this for all the characters but his awearness while acting adorable tends to give him an advantage when meeting new people. Since it's more likely they'll think he's simple and easy to trick and use or even just reveal more in their body language and how they speak than what they would be willing to admit. He keeps this in both versions but with the Mc one he learned it from scrach again, at first hating his small size and slightly chubby body shape until he learned how to use it to his advantage. Now he loves it since it allows him to act as adorable as he wants. Although he still has some negitive feelings about how he looks this is a lot less than it was and usually only on those late nights when you can't sleep.

When not the Mc Kyle stays a pirate learning more about how to defend himself in physical combat. Although he mainly is used for his connection to the air element, being able to speed up and slow down ships using the wind. Also being able to tell when a ship is approaching before anyone can see it by using the changes in the air, able to predict storms and when they should slow down or even port. He still keeps his curios nature seeing 'I don't know' as a chance to learn more. His desire to learn is deeply baked into who he is and his element air. However, he also remembers the expectations of everyone. While he's able to break away and ask what he wants he knows he doesn't want to be a pirate and yet that's what the crew expects from him as he's traveled with them for years. Without any other plans he focuses on using the pirate life as a chance to explore and learn more about the world. This is where being shipped with Asra and Nadia comes into play with his personality. Them giving him the chance to ask what it is he wants which is to learn and give him the chance to gain what he wants without as much expectation on who he has to be.

(I know Nadia has expectations but those are more based around, don't make yourself an easy target, be able to think for yourself and not being an asshole. Things Kyle already has she doens't expect Mc to nessaserily become count if they don't want to, doesn't force Mc to be something they don't want to be. Even bringing up them being cort magician if they'd like that. Making sure to ask if that is something THEY would want.)

Final thoughts on SSSS Dynazenon: its incredible.

Where SSSS Gridman is a bombastic story that ultimately reveals its plot to be an extended version of the episodic heroics the titular character engaged in in his 80's debut SSSS Dynazenon abandons much of that shows focus on tokusatsu homages and singular heroics for something more subtle.

Sure it still has wild over the top battles between the megazord-esque Dyanzenon and various Kaiju but the entire vibe is different. Most of the Kaiju are very weird in visual style, and while they do evoke to some extent to suit acted kaiju of the Ultra series its not nearly as upfront as the seemingly rotoscoped or mo-capped monsters of SSSS Gridman. Instead many of them border on eldritch, especially in the bizarre powers they display. Dynazenon itself often feels less like a suit acted megazord and more like a send up of classic combining super robots. There are shades of Combattler V and Voltron (or Go-Lion as it would be known to Japanese audiences) in the ensemble cast as they pilot the disparate parts of Dynazenon and come together to form the larger robot.

Gridman was primarily about rescuing a single person from the darkness that had enveloped her. Dynazenon is about a group of people coming together and through their bonds, growing. Overcoming obstacles both mundane and insurmountable. Grief over a deceased family member, fear of going to school, being a NEET (seriously), your mom potentially remarrying a guy who isn't all that bad but you still don't like, and talking to a girl you like. These are basic things, even stereotyped things, but they are also potentially insurmountable. Dynazenon champions the bonds we form with others, the shaping of friendships and communities, as a means of overcoming challenges. This is contrasted against the Kaiju Eugenicists, the villains who, while somewhat sympathetic, represent people who refuse bonds, viewing them as constraint to their freedom and throwing in their lot with kaiju in hops of gaining some great power that will give them true freedom from even the basic laws of time and space. I dont think the name "Eugenicist" part of their name was chosen lightly. Their outlook is one of utterly destructive individualism. Even given the chance to form bonds they reject them in the name of their mission, choosing to die rather than take another path.

Truly Dynazenon is the most erudite Power of Friendship story i have ever seen. It weaves a tale that encourages the viewer to take chances, to face risks and to learn. To turn old pains into new strengths, but not to do it alone. Because you can't. You need other people. Its how we're built. Its what makes us something other than Kaiju.

The "SSSS" prefix stood for "Special Signal to Save a Soul" in Gridman, denoting Gridman's guardian angel nature as he came to that world to rescue someone. In Dynazenon SSSS stands for "Scarred Souls Shine like Stars" a send up of the strength the heroes radiate having been brought together by Dynazenon and having grown and changed through one another.

The final piece of dialogue works as a nice thesis. Spoilers ahead, obviously.

"I hope they never do"

"Why?"

"So we never forget"

The scars of their last battle, insignificant marks yet meaningful to them, are reminders of how far they've come, of their bonds and trials and how in the end they came out of it better. Its a beautifully hopeful story. Saturday Morning Cartoon distilled to its purest essence. Highly recommended. I honest think its better than SSSS Gridman and im really looking forward to the Gridman Universe movie.

To be fair, it seems that Legendaries can be created either naturally ( if that's how the flow of life goes according to Frost Queen) or made so through tragic means (darkness, severe corruption in pursuit of forbidden knowledge etc). Not to mention both were had a personal connection to Sea Fairy: Abyss Monarch being the former regent over Sugarteara as a placeholder ruler and Black Pearl blessed with the power of the sea. Octopus' costume is a "before" everything went awful hence its Epic status. If crimson Coral turns out to be the super epic then it's to be assumed that the mermaids were to. So yeah they WERE different ranks until they gained power and turned into monsters due to their own grief/hurt from the situations as those they cared for betrayed them severely. Looking at white lily going from Ancient to legendary as dark enchantress

Octopus took on all the darkness corrupting the pearl and that turned them into the "Legendary Abyss Monarch" which has been a major player in undersea lore so technically a legend. They struggle to control it so they try to keep away from others. If anything, they symbolize the eldritch horrors of the deep which are known for being fishy n mind breaking.hence abyss

BP reveled and embraced the darkness after what happened. Took over a portion of the sea for her own. Becoming an ancient sea beast that happily drowned cookies in bitter grudge yet the longing is there. Given how she was blessed personally by her goddess, it would seem that she was bestowed a piece of SF. Her element is storms which is notorious in ending voyages at sea

If that makes sense? All the legendary cookies are created in some way for various reasons so they fit into whatever the criteria is placed. It's over time that they develop these legends about them so pretty much par for the course I think. The flow of life energy n all that

These are very interesting points you bring up. I guess it depends on how we’re defining “legendary”. In the real life sense, a legend can be anything that is told enough times to become well known by large groups of people. The way I’ve been using it in relation to the world of CR is that it’s a title that only powerful beings of nature have. The way I see it, legendaries can only be created naturally. The exceptions to this would be Moonlight and Dark Enchantress, as they were created directly by the Wizards and Witches respectively (Moonlight being actually created, while DE was simply a normal cookie corrupted by the Witches’ magic).

In my headcanon, the world of Earthbread was imbued by the Witches’ magic when it was created. All lifeforms in the world were born from that magic, but the legends were imbued with the highest concentration of it. Sea Fairy and the other fairies are the personified forms of the oceans. The legendary Dragons were born from the magic of the world as well, and so was the Millennial Tree. Timekeeper’s legendary power comes from their scissors, the Sonic Embroider, which is an artifact created by the Wizards. Frost Queen was chosen to fulfill the role of guardian of the flow of life energy, which I think is separate than what the other legends do. But the key here is that they were all born from the world itself to fulfill a certain role bestowed upon them.

Now, following this headcanon, Wind Archer and Fire Spirit are also more on the level of super epics than legends, but since Windy was created by one of the strongest forces in the world and has the role of purifying fallen spirits, and Fire Spirit is described as being the bridge between cookie and dragon, I think they can still be justified. I mean, I get that all of this is just my headcanons and nothing more, but I feel like the idea that those with legendary power are beings of nature makes sense. If an intense and tragic event was enough to create legendary power, I feel like Dark Choco should’ve become one as well since his is possibly one of the most tragic stories we know. Plus, his sword ties him directly to Dark Enchantress.

But yeah, going off of the actual definition of what a legend is, BP and AM fit it because their stories have been told until they became so well known that they became legends. I just meant in terms of their powers and the origins of their powers, they feel more like super epics (on the level of Capsaicin or Sherbet). And even going by the true definition of a legend, there are others who fit it too. Capsaicin is a legend in the Dragon’s Valley for being as powerful and dangerous as he is. And Squid Ink is a legend too, being a giant sea monster that has sunk many ships in pursuit of treasure. Dark Choco is even kind of a legend for betraying his kingdom.

Adonis' origins and immigration.

note : Adonis' origins are purposefully blurry in the narrative, and so will I be, but making it as precise as I can. Given the canon facts we are given, Adonis most likely falls under the exotic prince from small foreign country you never heard about romantic trope, both to avoid too direct sociopolitical commentary and due to the trope's popularity in Japan. tw; heavy sociopolitical subjects referred

When his origins were leaked despite the danger attached, Japanese media rumored Adonis as a foreign prince / the son of a King. Those labels are not exactly true, as the Middle East does not have those titles for aristocracy, and the empiric monarchy was overthrown to turn its inner countries into republics. They do not exist in this day and age.

Adonis' country is in Anatolia, which is continental portion of middle east and western asia with a very tumultuous history of empiric wars constantly reinventing its borders and influencial powers, is thus a republic. And as its "prince", Adonis is the son of the principality's Emir, which in this case means the emirate's political leader.

With stories named such as 1001 Arabian Nights, but a name like Adonis being Turkish, it is a problematic in the writing of putting other asian countries outside of East Asia as a monolith. For intent and purpose, Adonis comes from Arab ancestry.

Unfortunately, due to a tragic history of genocide to the indigenous populations and raging wars between empires, the country finds itself in disarray. However, its modern day largest issue is attempting to heal from the, not scars, but open wounds from the world's powerful nation manipulating the political scene to keep the region in poverty so labor and resource exploitation is easier for them.

As an indigenous leader, Adonis' father is the head of the current reigning party attempting to introduce socialist systems in the country to focus on helping its local indigenous residents while combating the extreme conflicts on the public front and behind the scenes, making it an uphill battle. This explains why, despite Adonis' family holding a prestigious and powerful title, he grew up in extreme poverty. Having to fight his sisters to have a share of food, going hungry for a long while and not having a lot of luxuries in life.

Adonis' father's occupation had him lead an incredibly difficult life out of the love of his country and the wish for his children to grow in a better environment. Adonis has always seen it as a noble, humble and especially brave way of life which he greatly admires as his own morals show : to Adonis, his father is not a king, a monarch, a noble, he is only a loving guardian who loves his people and dedicate his life to protect.

Sadly, his position of power made it so, behind the scenes, Adonis' whole family had a target behind their back, with governments of nations of privileged power wishing to put their own totalitarian, manipulated leadership through underhanded means such as weaponizing terrorist groups, blackmail, corruption or assassination.

As someone related to the Emir, Rei Sakuma naturally came in contact with Adonis while consulting doctors and professors in search of a cure for he and his brother's illness. As thanks for helping him and offering him warm hospitality, Rei accepted the request to help Adonis, the younger child of the Otogari, to move to Japan through the Sakuma family's monetary and sociopolitical resources.

Adonis was specifically requested as the little brother his sisters wished to protect ; as they were adult women, when the Otogari saw the opportunity to move one family member to safety, Adonis was chosen without him knowing at first. They later were able to move to Japan after having fought on their own.

Despite the opportunities and nepotism, gaining Japanese citizenship turned out to be very difficult for Adonis' family. Although their mother had citizenship, they were born elsewhere, and as she was out in the frontline to protect the country and her family, she was not physically present in Japan to go through the systemic channels.

Discrimination and oppression unfortunately played a large part in the systemic difficulties, which is why Adonis is so grateful to simply be alive and be able to live in Japan : it was a harrowing journey from beginning to end. Adonis and his sisters' last name is even their mother's due to their parents hoping it would help them move to Japan in safety.

As mentioned before, Adonis is a very innocent, composed and non-confrontational individual, aiming for peace in present and future for all. Therefore, his pure heart is not the type to complain about the negative, but show compassion to difficulties when presented to him or mentioned : a very important distinction.

Adonis will not talk about the difficulties in his life, not grasping how heavy the weight of his life since he was born had been ; in his mind, this is his business and nothing he should burden people with ...

I guess it is also time to discuss the Vanitas-PoH plot a bit, though we will need another time to discuss it more in detail.

So the Japanese term for PoH is Seven Princesses in Katakana, and apparently, the seven princesses existed before X-blade was shattered, so X-blade's light dividing into 7 pieces was actually caused by an original set of princesses, and not 7 original guardians of light, which were basically the reference to Warriors of Light. This I presume dates back to the cosmic fight between Kingdom Hearts, and Original Darkness during the early days of the multiverse, not the War of the Foretellers. So the princesses have been around for a very, very long time, which I guess also explains why there are 13 darknesses, ie. there were likely 13 lights originally, 6 warriors of light, 6 princesses of light, and one who is both, which sort of fits with the current structure of the main cast.

It is unclear, though, if the seven princesses exist for a specific part of the galaxy which is where the new worlds were born, exist for each galaxy specifically, or there is a universal constant for them, which means other universes have their own seven princesses (which would mean Realm of Unreality would have its own set of seven).

The dub also makes it confusing by using the term for all women with pure hearts of light, though Japanese dialogue states the term only refers to the seven maidens most powerful in light. This causes a bit of an issue

**English, and Japanese dialogue both basically confirm that there are an indeterminate "n" amount of women in the multiverse that have pure hearts of light, but each iteration of seven princesses only have the universe select the specific seven most powerful, or appropriate.

***Given the nature of X-blade forging, this would then imply that Xehanort could have simply chosen a pure heart of light that was not part of the main seven, this probably would have caused complications, though Xehanort's actual goal is not to forge the X-blade, but use Kingdom Hearts to restart the multiverse, so even an improperly forged X-blade would have worked for him, as seen in BBS.

**The usage of term "maiden", going by Japanese context, implies that once a pure light hearted maiden enters a marriage, their status as one of the seven lights is lost, and the more literal readings have more hilarious implications. This makes some sense in the Japanese context, with Shinto beliefs about purity, and youth, but as a magic power system, this is just odd.

***This also implies that since Elsa, who is implied to be into women in the mainline Disney continuity, can theoretically remain a seven heart of light in perpetuity, since Japanese context would not consider a marriage with a woman "true marriage", but Anna cannot.

***This is doesn't cause much issue with the original princesses of heart, since besides Kairi, they all gave up their power to stop Ansem SoD before their marriages (well, Alice is the exception).

Of course, Kairi not being reshuffled, while explained in canon with KH1, causes a bit of thematic confusion. While it is true that there is generally one Chaos Emerald, or Dragon Ball that remains in place whenever they are reshuffled, the one Chaos Emerald, or Dragon Ball that remains in place is generally depowered. Kairi was not when the Princesses gave up their power, she was depowered due to the creation of Naminé, which means the seven lights do not have work in concord with each other (and whatever light elemental power the person with pure heart will remain regardless whether they carry the seven lights, or the universe selects them as one of the seven princesses, which are independent events that occur in parallel).

Now that is over with, let's talk about the Vanitas part.

So Vanitas needs the seven lights within the princesses to reforge the X-blade, and Xehanort is using that as a cover for his actual goals in BBS. Cool.

However, Xehanort already has Maleficent steal one of the pure lights with Aurora, which means Vanitas should attack Maleficent in Enchanted Dominion, not Aurora's body with its vestiges of light.

Granted, Vanitas heavily implies that whole thing was a means to get training enough to absorb Ventus (Deep Space events particularly occur because of this, since Jumba's Experiments, being biological superweapons, serve as decent opportunities for this), which is his actual immediate goal, but that also causes issues in the BBS plot structure.

That said, rather than dwelling on the seven princesses, it would probably made more sense if Vanitas was seeking to disrupt light wherever, though it would still cause issues with Deep Space, where the Unversed are tormenting Jumba, and Stitch before their respective redemption arcs.

This may be another artifact of BBS's earlier concept as a Sora solo game on PSP*, where Unversed were supposed to be the minions of a sealed evil from the past, rather than manifestations of Vanitas himself specifically (which seems to be what the current canon is, ie. Unversed are the most basic form of corruptive darkness, manifested by the pieces of 13 Darknesses, and other dark beings associated with them, not something unique to Vanitas whatsoever), but in the finished story proper this causes issues.

*Though this also makes me wonder what was Nomura's original plan was for a prequel. He was obviously not going to make a prequel about Apprentice Xehanort, and others, since Days sort of covered that, maybe the original, original plan was supposed to have Purebloods instead, with Unversed being associated by the different 13 Darknesses instead.

THIS WAR AGAINST NATURE IS WHAT'S WRONG. HUMANS, YOU CANNOT CONQUER AND SUBDUE NATURE, AND YOUR CHOICE TO TRY TO DO THAT INSTEAD OF WORKING IN HARMONY WITH NATURE IS WHAT WILL ULTIMATELY DESTROY YOU IF YOU DO NOT TURN AWAY FROM THESE BEHAVIORS AND SEEK RECONCILIATION WITH THE GODDESS AND THE DIVINE FEMININE. LIKE IT OR NOT, THE TRUTH ABOUT REALITY IS THAT YOU LIVE, BREATHE, AND HAVE YOUR BEING IN THE DIVINE FEMININE WOMB OF CREATION OF THE GODDESS. IN HUMANITY, ESPECIALLY THE ABRAHAMIC RELIGIONS, DECLARING WAR AGAINST NATURE, THE DIVINE FEMININE, AND THE GODDESS, AND SEEKING TO ATTACK THE VERY WOMB IN WHICH THEY EXIST, DESTROYING THE PLANET AND NATURAL RESOURCES, WHICH THEY SEEK TO REGULATE TO ENSLAVE THE REST OF THEIR BROTHERS AND SISTERS, THEY HAVE BECOME 100% COMPLETELY OUT OF BALANCE WITH NATURE AND THE NATURAL WORLD, ELEMENTS OF CHAOS COMPARABLE TO A VIRUS, AND WE ARE RIGHT AT THE 50% PROBABILITY RATE THAT IF THE GODDESS DOES NOT ACT SHE MAY NOT SURVIVE. THE THING IS, NATURAL LAW SAYS SHE WILL SURVIVE, SO THESE ELEMENTS OF CHAOS IN HER WOMB ARE ABOUT TO BE DESTROYED AND EJECTED BEFORE THEY ARE ABLE TO DESTROY THE GODDESS. THIS WHOLE TIME IN THEIR WAR AGAINST THE DIVINE FEMININE, THOSE INVISIBLE TIGERS HAVE BEEN MAKING THEM INTO COMPLETE AND UTTER POWERLESS IDIOTS. AT FIRST HE DOESN'T KNOW WHAT IS GOING ON BECAUSE THIS IS AN OVERGROWN CHILD WITH OBVIOUS MENTAL HEALTH ISSUES. THEN AS THE EPISODE PROGRESSES, HE REALIZED THAT THE DOORS AND WINDOWS DIDN'T LOCK FROM THE INSIDE, THEY LOCKED FROM THE OUTSIDE. YOU CAN COMPARE THIS SITUATION TO THE HUMAN RACE EXISTING IN THE WOMB OF CREATION OF THE GODDESS RIGHT NOW. AS SOON AS THEY STARTED ATTACKING THE GODDESS SHE LOCKED ALL THE DOORS AND WINDOWS FROM THE OUTSIDE. I'LL LEAVE IT FOR THOSE WITH "INTELLECT" TO FIGURE THIS OUT INSTEAD OF SAYING IT, SO THAT WAY WHEN THE REALIZATION HITS THEY WILL TRULY UNDERSTAND.
