On retreat now. Boiling up some dried lavender to see what colour dye I will get - it could end up as ink.
Lavender. Water. Heat.

Last chance for the Patreon bonus perk! Over the last six months I've been growing, foraging and collecting materials to make my own pigments, and I've put them all together in a five-print set for new Patrons. Join at Pearl Tier or higher by 11:00 pm EST December 31st, and I will send you the set forthwith! The prints contain samples of the foraged pigment, plus the common name and scientific binomial of the plant it was obtained from letterpress printed in the closest matching PANTONE color. The PANTONE color is written on the back of the print, plus my initials. These are considered open editions, and are therefore not numbered. Some notes: ➡️ These images are sample images; as you can see, the foraged pigments are applied with very loose, painterly brushstrokes, and are very different one print to the other. Your set will not look like these samples. ➡️ The letterpressed words are sometimes printed on bare paper, on light pigment, or on heavy pigment, which may affect legibility. ➡️ These pigments are colored molecules made by plants, and can be readily attacked by oxygen, water and UV light. I have applied a UV-resistant fixative to the pigments but they may fade, change color, or disappear completely. ➡️ The printed PANTONE color will act as a light- and fade-resistant color swatch to track these natural changes. Any questions, please reach out, or post in the comments! #pigments #foragedpigments #coreopsis #morningglory #acorncap #inks #naturalinks #foragedink #homemadeink #inkonpaper #prints #editioned #editions #patreon #letterpress #forthecostofacupofcoffee #bonusperk #conceptualart #monthlyletterpress #cheapattwicetheprice #pigments #homemadepigments #artistpatreon #supportart #supportanartist #buyart https://www.instagram.com/p/CYKN6WgFbB6/?utm_medium=tumblr

Knopper Gall Ink
There are a huge number of galls that can form on Oak trees and I’ve come across a few.
The ones I’m interested in are the large ones, the Marble Gall, Oak Apple Gall and Knopper Gall.
All of which are reportedly high in tannins and can be used to create a black ink that I feel would make a wonderful addition to my spell work.
As I don’t have enough of the more traditionally used Marble Galls I thought I would try it with Knoppers which have been plentiful enough last year that I could give it a good try and not have to worry if I had to start over as I’ve picked up more this year to dry.
The method of creating the ink comes in stages so I’ve started with the longest process.
You will need…
- Rain Water
- Oak Knopper Galls (Dried for 6-12 months)
- Pestle & Mortar
- Jars with lids
- Vinegar
- Steel wool
- Gum Arabic
- Coffee filter or cheesecloth
- Glass pen or brush (not fountain/nibbed)
Extracting the Tannins
Tumblr media
🌳 Remove the galls from the acorn host and clean off any dirt or debris especially if they have been collected from the muddy ground.
Tumblr media
🌳 Using a pestle and mortar or bag and mallet, crush the galls. They do not have to be ground up but chunky pieces.
🌳 Remove any unwanted materials including any remaining larvae.
🌳 Put the crushed galls into a jar and add enough rainwater to cover them. Tannins will begin to leach out into the water almost immediately.
Tumblr media
🌳 Place the jar in a sunny spot and leave for 10 days, shake occasionally if you feel like it.
Making the Iron Sulphate
🌳 Add a good lump of steel wool onto a jar and pour in the vinegar (this can be a cheap malt vinegar)
Tumblr media
🌳 Place the lid on lightly and set aside with the gall solution.
…WAIT 10 DAYS…
Making the Ink
🌳You should now have a dark brown solution in the jar with the galls.
Tumblr media
🌳 Strain the solution using a filter into another clean jar.
Tumblr media
🌳 Repeat this process again with the steel wool/vinegar solution but make sure it’s into a clean jar and use a new filter!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
🌳 Take the jar which you would like to hold your ink and add in equal measures the two solutions before adding in a small amount of the Gum Arabic and stir to help it dissolve, more can be added if required.
Tumblr media
You should be left with a dark brown to black solution that you can now use as ink!

It’s been over a month since I’ve posted on Instagram. 1. Because I’ve been busy with commissions, summer classes and exhibition applications 2. Because as much as I love to share what I’m up to on Instagram it was taking up so much time I couldn’t find the time to actually do the things I wanted to share!! This piece of work is one of those things. I’ve had this London Environs map for a little while and have been umming and ahhing about how to work with it. This is a small section of it and after working on the water I’ve started to highlight the roads in the blue ink too. The idea being to highlight our rise in water levels and how our world is warming. How long will it be before our roads are rivers, our land is completely enveloped by water? #londonlandmarks #londonenvirons #antiquemaps #londonmap #londonartwork #naturalinks #makeink #londonartist #artinlondon #artforyourwalls #northlondon #artcanmember #artcan (at Harringay) https://www.instagram.com/p/B24HHZjnJGV/?igshid=13o79mg3o3amx
