STAGE 1 : meet the babies

Mid-May 2024

I started many dye plants from seed this year and have been working hard to clear the invasive grass from my beds so I can plant my dye plants. I will be using most of these plants to dye cotton fabric, and to make ink for drawing and painting. Some of these plants are native to America, while others are european. 

Plants I started from seed:

Madder (the roots can be dug up and dyed with, after a few years)

Scabiosa (black pin-cushion)

Safflower (makes pink or orange dye)

Marigolds (classic from mexico, so fun and beautiful)

Black Hollyhock (might take a year or two)

indigo (japanese variety)

weld (bright yellowy green)

woad (native UK blue dye plant, not at potent at indigo)

i moja raščešljana kosa, iz koje ispadaju sjemenke bez grijeha, bezgrešne sjemenke smeđeg šumskog pokrivača, polako trunućeg humusa, hrane za zelenilo i svjetlosne plohe, izlivene kao salivene, plijevljene unaprijed, obrezane kao mlado drvo pred rosom sunčevog žutila, izrezbarene mišlju bez prestanka, voljom iz blagog plamena, krijesom odaslanoga, ispisanoga listom, lišćem, korijenjem. sjeti se.

Doing a lot of struggle with this warp but it seems to have settled down a bit and the white linen weft is doing well. Huck weave.

The thing that has intrigued me most about textiles is the way the fabric moves through a space, the folds and creases it creates, the sound it makes. I find it difficult to imagine a static and flat piece of textiles. Even my most static pieces like my copper sculptures have the form of a fabric blown away with wind and frozen in time. In hindsight, I feel like this could be because I come from the land of unstitched drapes like sarees, dhotis, turbans and so on that are free flowing and versatile.
