Tea mug - A sad story
A roommate of mine accidentally broke a mug I've bought at the Natural History Museum of London :(
My personal steps of grief in this case
Step 1: Sadness
Tumblr media
Step 2: Suddenly an idea
Tumblr media
Step 3: Realize that I have an 'excuse' to plan my next trip to London
Tumblr media
I'm a bit sad for the mug and for my autistic ass that will stop drinking tea until I find another mug :(

🦋🪲 @ The Natural History Museum, London
.
The Natural History Museum in London is a museum that exhibits a vast range of specimens from various segments of natural history. It is one of three major museums on Exhibition Road in South Kensington, the others being the Science Museum and the Victoria and Albert Museum. The Natural History Museum's main frontage, however, is on Cromwell Road.

London pt. 8 - the Natural History Museum
As someone whose palaeontology phase never really ended, I of course had to go to the Natural History Museum. It doesn't compare to the Senckenberg Museum in Frankfurt, at least not in the dinosaur department, but I ended up loving the room with all the exhibits of marine reptiles.

What I loved most about it was that there was so much room given to Mary Anning, and how big her contribution to the scientific study of fossils was, as the person who dug many of them up in the first place. On display were, among many others, the first fossil she ever found, when she was still a child (the neck portion of the top left pic, the skull had been found by her brother the year before), and the first full plesiosaur skeleton ever discovered (at the bottom). These fossils were hugely controversial back in the early 1800s, as people's understanding of the history of the Earth was still largely shaped by the Bible, so most thought the Earth was 5000-6000 years old, the Flood had actually happened just as it's described in the Old Testament, and god made all the animals as they are today, with extinction or evolution not really being see as an option. Those fossils called all of that into question.

Also wow, look at these cute little guys! I love trilobites. 💙

Pioneering paleontologist Mary Anning was born #OTD (21 May 1799 – 9 March 1847). Let's also take a moment to appreciate her beloved dog companion, Tray:

1. Detail from Denise Dutton's 2021 Mary Anning statue at Lyme Regis (love the little detail of the ammonite in the ear!)

2. Detail from the original portrait painting of Anning by an unknown artist, before 1842, now at Natural History Museum, London

3. Sketch by Mary! Part of her personal papers, now held by Natural History Museum, London.
