Sorry about stopping, I have been having a rough time this week, but I decided to combine the prompts of the three days where I didn't get to post anything and made this!! Day 15: Rain! Pretty self explanatory. Day 16: Favourite ability. Currently, Natsume's "I am a cat". WHY? Because I love cats. Call me Fukuzawa. Day 17: Song! Any and all tragic songs (to me) belong to Oda. The song in question? "November Rain" by Guns and Roses. Nothing else to add, enjoy¿

Whenever I see discussions of BSD it's always with the assumption the Triparted Pact is correct- which, like, why?

Because it was Natsume's idea? The whole point of BSD is that no one is perfect - previously badass stoic mentor Fukuzawa just got a whole arc exposing his flaws and weaknesses because he trusts old friends too much and values people over morals. No one is all good and no one is all bad in BSD, why should Natsume be any different?

Most of what we've seen about him thus far seems to be positive - he helped out Ranpo in Untold Origins, got Fukuzawa that Abilities Permit (speaking of How Did He Do That), stopped Zenki Soukoku from killing each other in Cannibalism, got Oda to stop killing, etc. Which makes me think that we've got to see the flaws in him soon. He seems omnipotent, and seems to believe his method is the best way to protect the city - but that's never how it goes in BSD! Mori's whole Great Good thing is literally what makes him one of the series most antagonist antagonists!

Also, irl Natsume Soseki?? Awful fucking person. His students adored him, but he was cruel and abusive to his family, and I read in one source (this could be wrong) that he drove his wife insane?? Like I'm convinced he's going to turn out to be a darker character (possibly being an abusive mentor to Mori - like there has got to be a reason that man is Like That), and, by extension, we'll get his methods criticized - including the three way agreement he seems to believe is the only way to protect Yokohama.

I find it really interesting how majority of the bsd plot wouldn't exist or would play out completely differently if not for Natsume

If not Natsume, Fukuzawa and Mori would never meet

If he didn't talk to Oda he would still kill people for Mafia which would lead to him most likely not dying and even if he did he wouldn't tell Dazai to be a better person and wouldn't leave the Mafia

If not Natsumes influence the agency would never exist

If Natsume didn't exist or would just observe without intervenening most of the important events that happend in bsd just wouldn't exist

Fukuzawa would not meet Mori or Ranpo which would lead to the agency not existing

Oda would still be mafias killer

Dazai would not leave the mafia and join the agency

Yosano would most likely still be a nurse for soldiers

The Guild would not take interest in the agency

The cannibalism

Nothing

And we still don't know almost anything about him

Who he is, his family (or if he has any), what are his motives, where did he come from

We know nothing about him yet he's such an important character that if we take all of the most important moments in the bsd plot and trace them to the beggining, almost all of them lead to Natsume

I think something I would like to point again as I’m rewatching season three, and obviously, considering the first two episodes are the light novel dazai and chuuya: age 15, I was reminded of this.

We all know the classic “only a diamond can polish a diamond” with it being the name of one of the episodes, however, we all mostly know it from when Kouyou asks if its really a good idea to have dazai and chuuya work together, to which Mori responds “only a diamond can polish a diamond”. But, Mori then goes on to say that Natsume said that about him and Fukuzawa originally.

So while we all associate that saying with soukoku, they saying was originally about zksoukoku. And while I don’t like that ship or Mori, Natsume knew what he was saying about them, and in turn, Mori knew what he was talking about when he then used that saying for dazai and chuuya.

Idk if this means anything, but both Kouyou Ozaki (Tokutaro Ozaki) and Soseki Natsume (Kinosuke Natsume) have works titled "Kokoro", which Mori is described as lacking in the scene where he and Fukuzawa fight when he takes Yosano out of the isolation facility.
