you arrived like sunlight in the gloom
s. neuvillette is pondering on his feelings, unrecognizable as they are. cw. fluff. longing. barely any dialogue?? not proofread. gender-neutral reader (no pronouns used). tw. murder mention (trial). wc. 1.2k a/n. i wrote this at work (hehe) so take it with a grain of salt. this was for neuvi's birthday but i haven't caught a break this week so it's a little late. anyway, happy belated birthday, loml. credits. dividers by @/cafekitsune.
Neuvillette frowned—his eyebrows wrinkled together for a fraction of a second, barely perceptible. He placed down the documents he had been holding, and let out a sigh. It was heavy. As heavy as the five centuries he carried within himself. No, that was not quite right—it was as heavy as the unspoken feeling that swelled deep within his ribcage. Though he was well aware of his lack of understanding in human matters—even more so those that involved complex emotions—, Neuvillette found that this was different. It filled him with equal parts of dread and excitement. It made his heart, that useless muscle beating in his chest, swell with elation and shrink with anxiety.
It was a contradiction.
He was not used to contradictions. He was a man of facts—evidence, logic, arguments. He knew to recognize what was true, factly, from what was not. And yet, now, he hesitated. Doubt filled him like a leak in a fortress; slow and steady, it filled him from his toes to the top of his head, eroding his foundations, making him falter. Making him weak.
As the Iudex, hesitation was a luxury that he could not afford. As for weaknesses, he was not aware he had one. Not one as glaringly obvious as this.
As you.
His eyes flickered again to the documents on his desk. The latest evidence that the Marechaussee Phantom had collected framed the actions that had led to the current trial—a murder of passion is what Fontaine called it, but Neuvillette failed to see how passion could lead to such an awry outcome. Or that’s how he used to think, at least. Now, as he glanced through his window and caught sight of you, he had the faintest idea of how one could go to such lengths for passion.
You were beautifully oblivious, he noticed. Even as you laughed and flushed delicately under the soft sunshine of Fontaine, you did not seem to realize that the magician was pulling the reactions out of you with purpose. The sky began to cloud almost at the same time that he observed Lyney taking out a rainbow rose from his hat for you—he watched you stutter from the window, torn between flattery and shame as you accepted the flower in your hands.
It was odd.
He had never noticed the sly undertone of the magician. Perhaps he was seeing things—hallucinating could be quite serious. Maybe he should pay a visit to Sigewinne.
No matter.
Neuvillette forced himself to look back at the documents on his desk. His first and utmost priority should be the upcoming trial, not whether or not you were charmed away by Fontaine’s most famous magician. Despite his words, the rumble of thunder outside said otherwise.
Truth be told, he did not quite understand the storm of emotions brewing within him. He knew better than anyone that Lyney and Lynette’s reputation preceded them. He had even gone out of his way to watch their performances. Even Lady Furina had acknowledge their talent—if that was true, then why was his mouth filled with bitterness at the sight of a trick he had seen countless times before? Pulling a flower out of his hat was, perhaps, one of the most basic tricks under Lyney’s sleeve. He wondered, for a second, if perhaps he would be this bothered had something else come out of that hat. Would he be this unsettled if the cat that followed the twins had popped out? Or if it had been a dove instead of a flower? Or was it perhaps the kind of flower what bothered him?
No, that wasn’t right.
He realized, then, that what bothered him was the audience. That you, of all people, were the audience.
What a silly thought.
Why would you refrain from enjoying the joys Fontaine had to offer? Why would you resist the charm of magic and flattery? It was a selfish thought. Neuvillette paused as the thought crossed his mind, hand frozen, fountain pen bleeding through the paper—selfish, hm? He was not aware a creature such as himself could feel selfishness. He understood the concept; the constant need to only consider one’s needs. Never would he have guessed that he’d feel such a complicated emotion, least of all provoked by you.
No, that was not fair. That was a mistaken verdict—another surprise.
With another thunder, Fontaine was covered in rain once again. Neuvillette sighed, observing the mess of ink he had made on his desk. He was lucky the ink had not reach the text, but it was still unbecoming of the Chief Justice to appear in court with his gloves stained. That was another first—nothing had managed to unsettle him enough to lose sight of all propriety except you.
How could a mere human hold such power over a sovereign?
As he focused once again on the stained documents on his hands, Neuvillette finally lost sight of you. He did not see you laughing as the rain fell, soaking through your clothes. He did not see you ran to the nearest roof barefoot nor did he see you asking something to a passing Melusine.
He did not see you.
Not until you knocked at his door. “Monsieur Neuvillette?”
The moment you opened the door and stepped inside, soaked through and still dripping from the sudden rain, Neuvillette recognized another odd emotion swirling within him: relief. He felt such relief that, had he been standing, perhaps he would have fallen to his knees. Odd, he thought, that a mere human could wield enough power to bring him to his knees.
No, that was not accurate.
You did not hold the power.
He had willingly given it to you.
With the realization, the rain outside seemed to thin until the clouds began to disperse.
“I apologize,” Your voice, familiar and warm, forced a smile out of him. “I just wanted to wish you luck with the upcoming trial. I know what you will say-
“Justice needs no luck,” He finished for you.
You laughed. That bright laugh that always made him feel oddly lighter.
“I know,” You repeated, nodding. Despite your sudden appearance and your soaked state, you had not attempted to actually step into his office. You remained within the door frame, preventing your mess from staining his pristine space—unaware that, in fact, he’d rather you stepped in. He would rather have traces of you all over than have you at arm’s distance. “However, I am aware that this trial is… complicated, and though you always deny it, I know it might affect you. Kiara seems worried, too.”
“I appreciate the concern.” Neuvillette gifted you one of his rare smiles—one of those small, gentle ones that could warm even the coldest day in Snezhnaya.
“I’ll leave you to it, then,” You cleared your throat, suddenly flustered.
You mumbled something about needing to change, about not wanting to catch a cold, and left just as quick as you had appeared. His office felt almost cold the moment you disappeared—like the sun had left, taking all its warmth with it and leaving behind a perpetual winter.
That’s it, he thought.
The sun. He was weak to the sun.
He was weak to you.
more works.

the alhaitham brainrot is so strong that i wrote this at work today. it's a lil snippet so I'll just place it after the cut because I'm quite happy with how it came out <3 i might continue it at some point.
Alhaitham stood still at the doorframe, his eyes glued on the small, sleeping figure on the couch. Unmoving, he almost seemed to hold his breath; he had grown used to seeing her angry and frustrated, happy and laughing, but this... This was different. He wasn't used to seeing her this vulnerable.
It amused him greatly, even if the only hint was the slight curve of his lips as he finally took a step inside. It was ironic; how many times had they argued in the past about this? He used to lecture her about not sleeping in the library, about taking breaks, and here she was now. Asleep on his couch. The materials of her research spread through his coffee table. It tugged on his heartstrings.
For a man who prided himself in being reserved and prizing his personal space, he seemed oddly content with having her like this. With her presence invading every inch of his home. As if he didn't mind her plaguing every corner of his space, like an infectious disease he had yet to find the cure for.

Hello !
Can we have some hc for Natsu , Gray , Luxus & Gajeel reuniting with their s/o after the 7y they were « stuck « in Tenrou island ? Their s/o stayed at the guild so they still think they are dead . FT has such good angst material I wish they used it more 😞 they talked about the 7y gap only for 5 min like it didn’t deserve an entire episode about it .
A/n: Thank you for the request. I just gotta say I completely agree that they should have talked about the gap more, like a lot can happen in seven years, and they're just like 'wow seven years past, here's the like three major things that happened while we thought y'all were dead, now get back to work'. Anyways, sorry it took so long to get this out. I hope you enjoy and remember to hydrate or diedrate.
General Background:
Hearing that the entirety of Tenrou Island had disappeared during the S-class trails broke your heart
And as much as it pains you to admit it, you were probably the first member of Fairy Tail to accept that the wizards on Tenrou had died
So when Blue Pegasus showed up saying that there was evidence to suggest that Tenrou Island was still out there, you refused to believe them
You tried to reason that is had been seven years, if the Tenrou team had survived they would have made it back by now, not to mention every trip out to look for them there was no sign of the island at all
Of course the Remaining members of Fairy Tail still held on to hope that their friends where out there somewhere, so a small group left to try and find them once again
Still not wanting to get your hopes up, you decided it was best to stay at the guild and wait for their return so you can comfort them when they show up empty handed
You had been focused on protecting Romeo from Twilight Ogre, and failed to notice the mass of Magic energy that approached the guild Hall.
So when the man holding the hammer was sent flying across the room, you were just as much shock as the rest of the guild
After the new presence beat the crap out of the rival guild members and the dust settled, you couldn't believe your eyes
Standing in the door to the Fairy Tail Guild hall was none other than the group that had disappeared seven years ago
Natsu:
Seeing the pink haired mage you had spent the last seven years mourning, standing right in front of you stole your breath away
He looked exactly the same as he did when he left for the trials, how could that be possible
After they explained what happened and everyone began talking about some of the major changes that had happened while they were gone, Natsu came over to talk to you
He thought he would be greeted by a hug and some words of how much you missed him, maybe even some happy tears, but as soon as he made eye contact you broke down into full on sobs
He immediately wrapped you in hug pulling you close and rubbing your back, whispering gentle words about how he's there for you
Being back in his arms and taking in his scent just caused the tears to fall harder, but after a few moments you finally calmed down pulling back looking him in the eyes again
He waited for you to make the next move, and when you started talking about you were sorry for not believing in him and how you should have been there when they found him, he was stunned
Being completely taken aback by that response he pulls you close again, assuring you that he's not mad about you not being there and how he can't blame you for thinking he died after all it had been seven years
Once he had gotten you to calm down again he asks if you want to go for a walk and tell him about what has changed for you while he was gone
He'd listen to every detail, how you help search endlessly for them but after a while you gave up hope, how you still lived in the shack that you shared with him and Happy because you couldn't bring yourself to part from it
He listened to how you tried once or twice to go out with someone new but every time it fell through because no matter how many times you told yourself he was gone you couldn't get over him
Natsu just listened, he knew what it was like to have someone you love suddenly disappear so he didn't blame you for any of it
He just wanted too be there for you as handled this new wave of emotions and he wanted to assure you that he would be there not matter what
Gray:
Seeing Gray standing in the guild hall once again brought tears to your eyes
Ignoring as everyone explained what had happened, you were brought back to every night you spent crying yourself to sleep after you accepted that he was dead
You stood there tears streaming down your face as you relived every memory you had with the Ice Make wizard
Once he noticed you standing off to the side with tears falling, he rushed to your side
Hearing Gray ask if you were ok snapped you out of your thoughts, reaching out placing a hand on his face you couldn't stop your self from asking if he was really there
He would just chuckle softly and assure you that he was in fact really there
Deciding that you weren't dreaming or hallucinating, you pulled him in to a tight hug, soaking his shirt in fresh wave of tears as you berried your face in his shoulder
He just let you cry as he held you close knowing that it was shock to have someone that was supposed to be dead show up again
Once you stop crying Gray would suggest the two of you go somewhere to talk
He'd listen as you told him about the past seven years, squeezing your hand any time you looked like you were about to break down again reassuring you that he was there for you know
If you even tried to blame yourself for believing he was dead or not going when the rest went to see if they were really out there, he would make you look him in the eyes as he told you that it was in no way your fault
He would make sure that you knew he would never blame you for thinking he had died, and that he would spend everyday of his life making up for the seven years of hell he put you through, if you would let him of course
Laxus:
He wouldn't wait a second after making his appearance in guild hall to find you
After all his only other friends had all been on Tenrou so there was only one person he need to catch up with
Seeing his giant frame make it's way towards you left you speechless, after all this time he was finally back and he looked the same as when he left
Not giving him a chance to speak, you wrapped him in hug expressing how much you missed him
He wasn't surprised when a damp patch started to form on his chest where your head rested
He let you cry it out, rubbing your back so you knew he was really there
Laxus wouldn't even care about the strange looks the rest of the guild was giving him, all he cared about was making sure you were okay
After you calmed down and spent a small amount of time welcoming the rest of the Tenrou Team back you found yourself going for walk with Laxus
You apologized for not being there when the rest found them, after all you didn't know he had gone out to Tenrou and thought he just stopped visiting you
He assured you that you didn't need to apologize for anything, he then apologized for not telling you he was going to Tenrou and for making you think he just abandoned you
He also promised to do whatever it took to make up for everything
Gajeel:
It took Panther Lily pushing him in your direction for Gajeel to notice you had been staring at him since the moment they walked back into the guild
Realizing you hadn't taken your eyes of him, he timidly approached and apologized for leaving you for seven years
He's not the best with words or emotions so he is startled when you pull him into a bone crushing hug followed by tears soaking his shoulder
He'd pat your back trying to get you to calm down, saying that you're going to ruin his bandages, secretly he's just happy you were there
After you calm down he lets you vent about how much you missed and how sorry you were for losing hope
Again not the best with words so he'd probably mumble about it not being your fault
Seeing that the reunion wasn't going super smoothly, Panther Lily would probably show up and assure you that while Gajeel is shit with words, he really is happy to see you
(dividers by cafekitsune)

Can’t write nalu angst where Lucy dies and Natsu’s left to grieve bc he’d simply kill himself. All of his “you don’t die for your friends, you live for them” moral would go out the window. He can’t see a life without Lucy — even if he wouldn’t actively kill himself he’d work himself to death. He wouldn’t have boundaries, he’d just keep going until there’s nothing left of him. In fact, he’s the type of guy who would become a total villain if Lucy died. Zeref style, trying to revive her, searching for any chance to get her back. When she’s still alive he thinks he’s above Zeref’s life choices — he thinks he would cope better than he did. But history repeats itself. Lucy dies and Natsu’s voice of reason dies with her.
#actually maybe that is the nalu angst I could write#but i feel like that’s the only option#he lost her once - he almost lost her twice - third time’s the charm! he’d go insane with no return#fairy tail#lucy heartfilia#natsu dragneel#nalu#fairy tail nalu#nalu headcanon#fairy tail headcanons#tw sui talk

Needy Natsu Headcanons
Natsu Dragneel x Reader
been thinking about Natsu who ignores his needs for so long, but he finally breaks and comes to you for help
cw: smut (18+ mdni), oral (f!receiving), biting, multiple rounds, creampie, unprotected sex, hurt/comfort (if you squint?)
.85k words | masterlist
Natsu Dragneel who doesn’t really think about sex until he’s beyond pent up, emotionally vulnerable, and in desperate need of intimacy.
Natsu Dragneel who, trapped beneath his lighthearted exterior, is wracked with guilt — anxious and emotionally exhausted from watching the people he loves suffer, risking their lives for the greater good, day in and day out.
Natsu Dragneel who comes to you after a particularly hard job, mind both buzzing and numb all at once, body nearly shaking at the fear and anxiety from the last few jobs that refused to leave him, whimpering out a quiet “I need you,” in the most broken, heartbreakingly desperate voice you’ve ever heard from him.
Natsu Dragneel who nearly collapses into you when you let him in, pawing at your sides with shaky desperation, kissing you softly, needily, craving the comfort and warmth you bring to him.
Natsu Dragneel who continues his tender kisses as he gently guides you onto your back, sliding a hand beneath the hem of your shirt with a whisper of “can I?”, gently pulling it over your head when you nod in confirmation, returning his lips gingerly to yours as soon as the fabric is past your face.
Natsu Dragneel who trails soft, needy kisses down your jaw, along your neck and collarbones, nipping small, needy bites at the flesh of your chest, holding you like he’s afraid you’ll disappear if he lets go.
Natsu Dragneel whose trail of kisses leads him to the front of your jeans, hooking a finger through the loops on either side of your hips as he searches your face for permission, pulling them down and off you when you let out a breathy “mhmm” in response.
Natsu Dragneel who wouldn’t dare even think about the aching of his cock in his pants before making sure he’s taken care of you, wrapping his hands around the fat of your thighs, breath fanning over your inner thigh as he trails small nipping kisses upwards, licking a long languid stripe up your slit when he finally reaches your cunt, sending electric warmth coursing through your body.
Natsu Dragneel who eats your pussy languorously — slow, indulgent movements sending jolts of electricity through your body as you shake under him, warmth pooling and tightness coiling in your stomach as you shake under him, his fingers digging into the plush flesh of your thighs.
Natsu Dragneel who groans softly when you cum on his face, lapping up your spilled juices with soft kitten licks before detaching himself from your sopping cunt, trailing soft, messy kisses back up your body; upon reaching your face, he graces your lips with a deep kiss and a whisper of “you okay?” before finally releasing his cock from his pants, tossing them aside and lining himself up with your entrance when you breathe out a “yeah.”
Natsu Dragneel who sighs out shaky, breathy whimpers as he slowly sinks into you, hands grabbing earnestly at your sides as he reattaches his lips to yours, stifling your whimpers as you feel his cock drag along your walls.
Natsu Dragneel who holds you close as he fucks you — slowly, amorously — unable to hold you as tightly as he needs for fear of hurting you, but deathly afraid that if he holds you any less you’ll disappear from beneath him.
Natsu Dragneel who’s ignored his own needs for so long that his first orgasm comes too quickly, shaking above you as he buries his face into your neck, asking if it’s okay to keep going when it barely does anything to soften his stiffened cock, whispering breathy thanks when you tell him you can go as long as he needs, pressing a rough thumb into your clit as he starts moving again, pulling a gasp from you.
Natsu Dragneel who takes several orgasms to finally release the tension both in his cock and his body, finally pulling out of you with tired, shaky movements — a whimper escapes you as you feel his thick cock exit your tired cunt, creamy white liquid spilling out of you as you finally relax your aching body, gasping for air beneath him.
Natsu Dragneel who breathe heavily above you for a few moments before wrapping his arms tightly around you, pressing a soft, needy kiss to your lips — as you wrap your arms around him as well, he nuzzles his face into your neck and holds you even tighter as he lays next to you, body tense and holding yours until he finally, finally falls asleep to the feeling of your fingers carding through his hair and rubbing slow circles in his back, whispering to him that everything is going to be okay.
Natsu Dragneel whose body aches constantly — from the strain of constant travel and fighting, the strain of being the wizard that everyone is always counting on to save them, the strain of being Fiore’s constant salvation — but who finally feels a fragment of peace when he comes to you like this, allowing himself to be vulnerable, to be needy, be selfish, to be held, and to let somebody else take care of him for just a little while.
oof not normally much of a Natsu stan but I'm rewatching the show again and the Tartaros arc got me feeling some things. something about soft but like needy-and-about-to-break Natsu just tickles my brain rn. first time writing in like 4 years, first time writing smut ever so that's fun, idk how I feel about it but we'll see I guess.
please do not copy or repost. thanks!

Question: How can we say Natsu treats Lucy differently compared to the rest of his nakama? We have seen him being angry emotional during Erza "funeral" (in the first season) and his reaction when topic of Lisanna's death comes up. He even blushed when Lisanna used to talk about marriage and all (just before she passed away when Happy and Natsu have another fight). He never really expressed any physical interest in Lucy EVER and is mostly lukewarm in his reactions unless she is in danger or hurt. He didn't even hesitate when he was asked to kiss Lucy.
So how can we say that Lucy is different from all these people? I hope you understood my question.
(PS I am a huge NaLu shipper but I hate how they handle serious moments)
Well, I think that we have to clear something up, and its that Lucy and Natsu are more than Lucy and Natsu.
Natsu's world doesn't revolve around Lucy, and Lucy's world doesn't revolve around Natsu. They are their own persons with their own dreams and goals (and this is completely fine)
Natsu is a very passionate person, who loves his friends and family, he has known Erza and Lisanna since they were children, it is obvious that he will be emotional about their "deaths". Just like he was with future Lucy's.
Why do I think Natsu treats Lucy differently? Well, because he does. Literally. Not only does Natsu avoid any kind of (serious) fight with Lucy, but he is emotionally vulnerable with her, he becomes soft. I'm going to focus on Erza and Lucy because we don't have enough interactions with Lisanna.
Natsu is an extremely violent person, even when Erza was distressed his solution was punching her (even if it was for her own good or not),
Now, we have never seen Natsu use violence to console Lucy (or in general), they are always soft, comforting moments
He just can't hurt her, at least not willingly, it's beyond him.
Just like when he had to fight snake lucy and completely stopped thinking she was back
I want to pinpoint his reactions to different deaths, because even those are different
When Lissana, erza or even Igneel died, Natsu felt helpless and sad
Lucy? He wanted to burn the world down, kill his best friend out of grieve and then kill himself in the process just because he thought he had lost her forever. (I talk about this here)
-.-.-.-
About the physical interest, I kind of disagree, It is true that he doesn't show as much physical desire like other men in FT but he does in his own way. We have seen natsu fantasize over Lucy
be jealous of other men for her attention
and become possessive of her
He is not responsive because almost every time they have a physical moment he sees it coming, is mentally prepared for it or he initiates them.
NOW, what happens when Lucy initiates or he doesn't see it coming?
My man becomes a blushing mess (this is mainly shown in official art tho)
but he never shows jealousy or possessiveness towards erza, because Erza is not Lucy
#shiro's nalu analysis#HOLY S this was LONG#took me an hour to write and gather all this#please appreciate it lmao#shirotalks#natsu dragneel#lucy heartfilia#fairy tail#fairy tail nalu#nalu#natsu x lucy

fairy tail dragon slayer headcanons pt. 1
♡ what the first gen and second gen dragon slayers eat is pretty self-explanatory. all of their elements are... somewhat tangible. sting and rogue though? they're still figuring it out. rogue wonders if he can eat someone else's shadow, and sting immediately volunteers himself. "for science!" he says. the result is that sting almost passes out. oops. he insists they try on their friends, much to rogue's displeasure. the results are that sting is the most susceptible, then yukino, rufus, orga, and minerva is the least susceptible to magic drainage. sting insists rogue tries to eat an inanimate object's shadow, and nothing happens to it, so they decide that's the way to go.
♡ when wendy eats air, the oxygen levels thin. she has to be careful or she'll cause her allies and enemies alike to pass out. when sting eats light, the area gets darker and darker. this is great for rogue, who starts eating the shadows, and they manage to balance each other out.
♡ sting insists that different types of light taste differently. his favorite is light from golden hour, right when the sun is dipping below the horizon. moonlight will do in a pinch, but it's so diluted that it takes way more of it to recover sting's magic. he also gets sick if he eats too much moonlight.
♡ pantherlily already has transformation magic and enhanced strength, and carla learns to transform so she can help wendy fight. the other three exceeds feel... a little left out. happy learns how to fly faster and for longer (though he still complains about lucy being heavy). lector goes to porlyusica and wendy to learn some stamina regeneration spells for sting. everyone is surprised when frosch, completely on their own, manages to learn an adorable light spell that creates floating pink bubbles. rogue can consume the shadows from them without worrying about draining frosch's magic, and he spends the entire afternoon crying about it.
♡ dragon slayers are a bit like crows. their way of bonding with someone is through gifting trinkets. natsu will bring lucy, erza, and even gray pretty rocks or seashells that he's found on jobs. wendy picks up a new craft or hobby every week, so the members of fairy tail are constantly recieving handmade accessories from her (gajeel helps during the metalsmithing phase). gajeel does not buy cute things for people. he is like a dad in the fact that, when juvia mentions she wants watermelon, he buys her 20 watermelons. walking math problem fr.
♡ laxus has mixed feelings about his more draconic features and habits. he's never loved his magic because of the way he got it, and the memory of his father basically torturing him as he inserted the lacrima will stay with him forever. he tends to suppress dragon instincts more than anyone else in the group, and they all scold him for it. on a rare occasion, laxus will give in and buy something shiny (like a hairclip) for wendy. she has a little jewelry box for them that she guards fiercely.
♡ cobra considers himself more of a flying snake than a dragon. he once drew a picture that sent everyone into a laughing fit. he prefers to stick with the old oración seis crew, but the guild dragon slayers are always happy to see him when he stops by with crime sorcière.
♡ sting, because of his heightened senses and his affinity for light, prefers nighttime. the day can often be overwhelming, and overexposure to bright settings and lots of people leaves his skin buzzing. he likes to sit in the dim guild hall, leaning against the cool stone wall, as the chatter of the crowd quiets down with the setting sun.
♡ dragon slayers all have the Bite instinct. some exercise a degree of control about it, and others go crazy with it. wendy will very gently nibble on erza or mira's arm when she's in the mood, and sometimes she does it absentmindedly. natsu, on the other hand, is an absolute menace. multiple of erza's armor sets have natsu-shaped bite marks on them. he tends to go after her the most because he knows he won't hurt her with the armor. when natsu's more calmed down, he will chomp on lucy's shoulder. gajaeel copes by eating all of fairy tail's silverware (mira starts buying ceramic spoons), but when levy offers her wrist to him he can't help it.
♡ rogue is another one who doesn't really bite people. he, very rarely, nips at frosch's ears, which causes the exceed to giggle. sting is a Biter like natsu, but with slightly more decorum. he really wants to go at it but will restrain himself because most people aren't willing to be treated like a chew toy. luckily for him, gray and cana aren't most people! because they both wear pretty exposing clothing, gray and cana have no qualms about showing off sting's bite marks on their skin. sting always turns bright red when they tease him about it.
♡ laxus and cobra don't really feel the Bite instinct due to being second gen, but cobra is a little shit and bites people for the fun of it. laxus is completely unbothered when natsu clings to him like a koala and gnaws at him.
#lychee writes#gray and cana are best friends with sting. loke too. this is canon mashima told me#minerva taught frosch the spell btw but she'll take that secret to her grave#genuinely how does one eat light or shadow though#I can't even visualize it😭#fairy tail#fairy tail headcanons#natsu dragneel#wendy marvell#gajeel redfox#laxus dreyar#sting eucliffe#rogue cheney#cobra#sabertooth#dragon slayer#gajevy#if u squint

Fairy Tail Platonic Week: Day 5 [Prompt: Injury, “Nobody hurts my friends”]
(and the scar prompt if you count how I draw Erza but that is less than intentional lol). For @ft-platonicweek
Erza and Natsu have such a great dynamic, in this sort of murky water between friends who share a braincell and Erza taking on the scary older sister role. Natsu having his first real on screen breakdown when Erza got hurt/almost died in the Tower of Heaven arc did something to my brain so it was time to reverse the situation. ahaha. I don't have full context to this other than what I imagined whilst drawing it, but let's say Erza is rightfully pissed and wearing her ass-kicking clothes for a reason. True friends can be feral together and feral for the sake of each other—one of my favorite dynamics :)

Constantly thinking about how nastu could’ve been such an interesting character
Like looking back on it I feel like they could’ve done something really interesting with him feeling helpless and no control over his life
He was a kid who was left by his father, than has to adjust to a culture he’s not familiar with at all while being ridiculed, never believed about his dad and where he came from, physically and mentally put down for his abilities, almost always fighting to be seen as an equal, only to find his you life and freedom is tied to a stupid book and he truly never had an ounce of control. He was raised from the dead against his will, had to leave his father against his will and he was sent to the future against his will. He was trapped and never given true freedom
#which actually parallels Lucy’s story with her father quite nice#they could’ve both had stories about taking back control after it’s been take away from u#they should have had ME writing fairy tail#fairy tail natsu#natsu#natsu dragneel#fairy tail anime#fairy tail#lucy heartfilia#nalu#rant#no spell check#rawdogging it

running home to your sweet nothings
s. jing yuan is feeling a teensy bit left out. cw. baby yanqing (being adorable), named oc/self-insert (natsu), established relationship, domesticity, jing yuan being clingy and dramatic. tw. named oc/self-insert. wc. 1.8k a/n. this is what procrastinating at work on a friday does to me. i did proofread this at work, but i was sleepy, so it might contain typos. i apologize in advance. credits. dividers by @/cafekitsune.
Jing Yuan leaned against the door frame of their improvised nursery. Improvised—he smiled at the thought. He had watched his wife painting the room herself with the baby wrapped around her, had heard her complaining when his tiny hands had reached for her paint-stained hair and pulled, had seen her pondering over the best soothing color for a child this small. The decoration might have been improvised, but nothing about the love that filled these walls was.
He stayed there, watching the scene unfolding within the nursery. He could see his wife rocking the fussing baby, hear the baby’s frustrated whines, listen to her soft humming as she attempted to calm him down. He even saw her pressing separate kisses to each of his tiny fingertips, repeating over and over that he was her brightest star.
It never failed to melt his heart, even when his wife clearly pretended not to notice his presence.
“Don’t you think you’ve given enough attention to that child?” Jing Yuan’s voice reverberated behind her—every bit as commanding as ever, but being his wife for so long, Natsu could feel the unspoken complaint behind his every word. She rolled her eyes, still refusing to turn around and meet his eyes. “He’s going to become one of those pampered children that can’t take no for an answer.”
Natsu almost wanted to laugh; someone was being spoiled, all right, but it was not the exhausted baby in her arms.
“You’ve brought me this child,” Natsu stopped her humming, motioning towards the small baby fighting against sleep in her arms. His little head full of blonde hair was already messy from his fussing, but at least he had calmed down—even at this age, he was already stubborn, refusing to go to sleep despite the tiredness in his honeyed eyes. “With no warning, may I add, and now you’re complaining that I give him too much attention? Pick your battles wisely, General.”
She heard him laugh behind her, that deep laughter from within his ribcage, the one she had felt vibrating against herself far too many times not to recognize it. He was laughing at her.
“You’re a cruel woman.”
She felt his arms wrapping around her frame, pressing her against the expanse of his chest. The plates of his armor felt cold and rough against her back, only the soft fabric of her robe separating them—Jing Yuan had the habit of nuzzling into her as if he were a tiny cat and not a lion of a man. His silver hair tickled her as he pressed his face into the nape of her neck; Natsu laughed as quietly as she could—hoping Yanqing would not fuss—, then turned around to face him. It was hard to believe that she could be here, laughing with him and enjoying his warmth, when a month ago she was ready to pack her things.
Then, again, she wouldn’t have been able to turn away from a baby. From her baby.
As if he were reading her thoughts, a smirk bloomed on the General’s lips. His golden eyes seemed to gleam with mischief; it could only mean that he was up to no good, as he so often was whenever she was involved. Natsu looked at him with a raised eyebrow—a silent challenge, one that he met with a hearty chuckle.
With one arm, she held the baby against her chest; with the other, she proceeded to hit his chest.
“General,” She warned him.
He merely grinned, fighting to hold back the laughter bubbling within his chest at the very ineffectual hit of her fist. “Yes, darling?”
“I’m trying to put our son to sleep.”
“And I’m trying to get some affection from my wife.”
Natsu rolled her eyes, slightly amused. “Are you jealous of your son?”
Jing Yuan scoffed as if he had just heard the most ridiculous statement ever. “Of course not. He’s an infant. But when was the last time you looked at me with the same adoration, hm?”
He saw the exact moment his wife’s face fell from curious to disappointed, and he almost wanted to tease her. Almost. He didn’t, though. He knew, after all these years, how to handle Natsu’s temper—he was not about to lose this battle just yet.
“You said it yourself. He’s a baby,” Natsu repeated as if the child was him and not the one in her arms.
“You wound me,” He said, pitifully, burying his face into the crook of her neck this time.
Almost immediately, Yanqing whined loudly, his tiny hands grabbing handfuls of Natsu’s sleeping robe—a clear complaint about the lack of space now that the General was pressing into him as well. Natsu pulled away, then. The reaction was half instinct half exhaustion from his antics. It made him smile; for all her reluctance to care for the child at the beginning, she had grown into quite the caring mother quickly enough. Perhaps far too quickly, Jing Yuan mused. The moment Yanqing made a sound, Natsu was already over him. She was the one who understood him the most, and though most nights it made him feel all warm inside… Tonight he was a little bitter.
Just a little.
“You’re going to make him cry.” She warned him.
“I am the one who is going to cry, my love.” Jing Yuan said, dramatically, letting his arms fall at the absence of his wife in them. Natsu did not seem amused at his performance.
Maybe it was her protective instincts kicking in. Perhaps he had already pushed her buttons too far. Whatever it was, Jing Yuan knew that this could not end well—for him, at least. It was clear that Yanqing had won this round; Natsu was already pulling him closer, cradling him against her chest as if she knew the beating of her heart would soothe him.
He felt oddly glad about his win, though, considering how their life together had begun.
The beginning of this journey had been far too stormy for his liking. His lack of eloquence had almost cost him his marriage—could have even cost Yanqing the mother he now loved so much. It was funny to think about that now, but at the moment he had felt a dread that not even his hardest battle had caused. The way Natsu’s face had fallen the moment he had arrived from that battle and her eyes saw the baby in his arms. He had seen the panic in her eyes, the questions, the uncertainty, and he had been enough of a fool to think that a joke might ease the tension. A joke that, at the end of the day, had hurt his wife and made her almost leave their home.
He sighed at the memory—he had been lucky enough that Natsu had listened to him, that her soft heart had not resisted the moment Yanqing had reached for her, that all her anger had melted the moment she held him against her chest. It had taken her seconds to hold that baby and find herself a mother. It would have taken him a lifetime to feel ready for such a challenge had she not been by his side.
“What do you think, baby?” Natsu cooed at Yanqing, pressing a soft kiss to his little forehead. Jing Yuan felt his lips curving into a smile as the baby giggled—his mood improved so easily whenever she held him it was almost magic. “I think your dad is a little starved of attention, don’t you think? What should we do? Should we give him a few kisses?”
Before he could give her one of his witty retorts—those that either left her flustered or unamused—, Natsu had already placed Yanqing in his arms. She made him back away until his legs collided with the bed, forcing him to take a seat. Now she was towering over him—even though that might be too generous of a description since his wife was especially short (perhaps that’s why she got along so well with the Master Diviner. Not that he would voice that thought out loud, lest both of them would direct their anger at him).
Natsu then placed her hands on his shoulders.
He merely looked at her, an amused smile dancing on his lips.
Maybe he had pushed her just far enough.
“How about this?” She smiled, cupping his face in her hands before pressing a soft kiss on his right cheek. “Or this?” One on his left. “Maybe this?” Then the tip of his nose.
Jing Yuan lost count of the relentless assault the moment the kisses amounted to 10—all he knew was that his wife had taken it upon herself to cover him in kisses the same way he had seen her do with their son before. The actions had been so unexpected that even he, General Jing Yuan—the longest-standing Arbiter General—had just become a flustered mess. Cursed by his hubris-filled words, Jing Yuan had been left defenseless against her merciless affection.
Even his son, at such a young age, seemed to laugh at him.
After a few seconds, he reached to stop her. He grabbed her hand and squeezed. “Darling mine, I think that’s quite enough.”
“Oh?” She pulled away slightly, looking down at him with a spark of mischief in her eyes. Not very often had he observed such gleam in her eyes in all the years they had spent together—his wife usually kept to herself and her work at the Divination Commission. It was always him the one pushing her buttons and making her break that calm facade she kept most of the time. He had seen her laughing and flustered, doting and worried… But mischievous like this? No, barely ever.
She was a far greater foe than he had anticipated, it seemed.
Natsu leaned in for one last kiss. It was different from the others—deeper, lasting, and definitely longing. Damned be all the aeons, it was almost teasing; he wondered, for a second, if this was what she felt when he pushed her too far. If she, too, felt this exposed when he was teasing her—when he was pulling reactions out of her for fun.
For all he enjoyed her reactions, he realized that being on the receiving end was oddly… humbling.
“Was that good enough for you, General?” She asked, still mere inches away from his lips.
He swallowed, hard, the flush on his cheeks intensifying. Jing Yuan was used to slaying enemies on the battlefield, leading his men to victory time and time again, always being five steps ahead of every enemy’s traps.
But his wife, it seemed, remained the one opponent he could not defeat—she still was his one and only weakness, and he would not have it any other way.
“That was foul play, my lady.”

Hello,
Is it possible to have a one shot about Natsu reuniting with his s/o after he left for his 1 year of training ? Like he left only a letter for them ( the same way he did for Lucy ) but his s/o is upset when he come back ( bc seriously who leave like that ) like an angst/hurt to comfort kind of one shot? Thank you !
Word Count: 3168
Paring: Natsu Dragneel x gn! Reader
Warnings: Possibly Ooc Natsu and Lucy, Canon typical violence
A/n: Hello thank you so much for requesting this. I had a lot of fun writing this so I hope you enjoy it and that it reaches your expectations. Anyway, have a great day and remember to hydrate or diedrate.
After the fight against Tartaros I had spent a few days in the hospital to recover from the few injuries I had received during the fight. Natsu visited me on the first day checking in on me to see if I was okay, but before I could make sure he was okay he said he had something he needed to do before leaving. On day two Lucy told me that Master Makarov had decided to disband Fairy Tail. It also felt like she was hiding something else but I didn't push it.
When I was finally free to leave on day three, I was shocked that Natsu and Happy hadn’t shown up to walk me home. I brushed it off as they were busy trying to figure out what we were going to do now that Fairy tail was no more, I made my way to our shared home. Reaching the small house on the edge of Magnolia, I was stunned by how quiet it was.
“Natsu, Happy, I’m home.” I called out, opening the front door expecting to be greeted by one of them. “Hello, Natsu, are you guys home?” I said looking around the space. It was weirdly clean considering Natsu and Happy were known to be bad at cleaning up after themselves. Looking around some more I noticed that there was a small envelope laying on the counter. I cautiously picked up the envelope, taking note of the wax seal that was pressed with N in holding it closed. Gently breaking the seal, I pulled out the contents.
Dear Y/n,
Happy and I are going on a training mission. We’ll be back in a year or so. I would have asked you to come along but I know how much you like being around our friends at Fairy Tail, so I figured you would want to stay behind. Plus you’re still recovering from the fight and I need to start training soon if I want to beat Zeref. Anyway stay safe and don’t forget that I love you. Also Happy wants you to know that he left some fish for you so you don’t have to worry about getting back to work right away. Well we should be off, again stay safe, I love you and I’ll see you in a year.
Sincerely,
Natsu and Happy
P.s. there’s also a stash of jewel in the small box on our nightstand. Feel free to use it however you want.
By the time I finished reading the short letter, I had tears streaming down my cheeks. Not only had the Guild I called home for most of my life just up and disbanded, but the one person who promised to be by my side no matter what, left. Not only did he leave, but he felt that a note was better than telling me to my face that he planned on leaving. I probably sat on the floor in the small makeshift kitchen for a couple hours before I decided to get up.
As I was making my way to what used to be mine and Natsu’s shared room, there was a knock at the door. Hoping that maybe they had decided to come back for me, I wiped my eyes reaching for the door. Before I could welcome them home, I made eye contact with Lucy. Realizing it was in fact not Natsu but our close friend, I broke down in tears once again. Not being able to hold myself up, I slumped against Lucy crying into her shirt.
“Hey it’s going to be okay.” She said softly while patting my back. “Let’s get you sitting down and then you can talk about it if you want.” The blonde said gently moving me off her chest and ushering me to sit on the small couch in my living room.
After another hour of me crying into Lucy’s shoulder, I finally stopped and just looked forward to the empty room. “It feels wrong not having those two causing mayhem.” I whispered out as if talking any louder would break something.
Lucy nodded as she rested her head against mine. “I know not having Natsu lighting something on fire is weird.” She said, before lifting her head off mine. “I’m sorry, I should have told you when I visited you yesterday at the hospital. I just didn’t know how.” she explained, I could tell from the shakiness of her voice that she meant it.
“It’s not your fault Lucy, actually I’m kind of glad you didn’t tell me. I might have blamed you for it. But after reading the letter I know the only person to blame is Natsu.” I said, looking towards the letter that I apparently never set down. “I want to understand and accept that he’s going through a lot because he had to watch Igneel die, but I can’t help but be angry.” My emotions were a mess as everything set in. “He just left me with only a note and expects me to be okay with that. What am I supposed to do Lucy? Fairy Tail is done, so I won’t be able to find any work, and everyone from the guild is going to be leaving town soon so what am I supposed to do?” I asked hoping my close friend would have some answers.
She sighed before pulling me back in for a hug. “I’m not sure Y/n, but we can figure it out. I’m sure of it.” Lucy said. It was silent for a moment before she spoke again. “Hey, why don’t you join another guild? I heard that Wendy and Carla are going to join Lamia Scale, maybe you could go with them.” She suggested.
I thought for a moment, she was right, I could join another guild. But what would I do with my house? It's not just mine after all, it’s Natsu and Happy’s as well. I can't just sell it, and what if they come back sooner. Everything was running through my head a mile a minute. I looked to Lucy before my brain settled on a single thought. “What are you going to do?” I asked hoping that hearing her plan would help me figure out mine.
“Oh, I was going to try and get a job with sorcerer weekly. I’ve always wanted to be a writer so maybe I could get an editing position there.” She said after a moment of thinking.
Taking in the information I thought for a moment, before making up my mind. “I think I’m just going to stay here for now.” I said, earning a confused look from Lucy. “I can find a job here in town and that way I’m here if Natsu and Happy come back early.” I said with a weak smile.
She still looked confused but sighed. “If that’s what you really want, then okay Y/n. But don’t get your hopes up, I doubt Natsu would say he’ll be gone for a year if he doesn’t mean it.” She said standing up.
“Well it’s Natsu who knows what he’s thinking. And plus someone has to keep the house clean while they’re gone. I’ll be fine, and think of it this way at least you’ll know where to find me if you ever need me.” I smiled up at her. “Promise that if you make it big working for Sorcerer Weekly that you’ll write to me and keep me updated on how things are going.” Lucy nodded, smiling before leaving. That night I barely slept, thinking about Natsu and how I hoped he was okay.
When I woke up the next morning, I was startled by how quiet and cold the house was. But after walking out to the living room and seeing the discarded letter from Natsu on the table, I was reminded of everything that happened. I sighed before going to make myself a quick breakfast and deciding that after eating I would head into town to find work. Without Fairy Tail and without Natsu, I would have to find work soon.
Time Skip
It’s been a year since Fairy Tail disbanded. Which also means it’s also been a whole year since I last saw Natsu. I had stuck to what I told Lucy that night and got a job in Magnolia, staying in the house I once shared with Natsu and Happy hoping that one day they would finally return home. Lucy also kept her word and after she moved to the Capital for her job with Sorcerer Weekly, she would send letters regularly to keep me updated on her life and any information she had heard about our Fairy Tail family. Eventually as the Grand Magic Games came around, Lucy sent me an invitation saying that since she was working as a reporter for the event, she was given an extra ticket and thought I might want to watch the games. Needing a small break from Magnolia, I left for the capital ready to spend time with Lucy and see what the current top Guilds had to offer.
The games had been interesting enough. Not as crazy as last year when Fairy Tail completely wiped the floor with the competition, but it was still fun to watch. As the final battle to decide the top guild ended, I was stunned into silence feeling a very familiar Magic start to envelope the stadium. The whole stadium followed suit as a hooded figure appeared in the arena. After a moment heat started to take over the arena and I could hear Lucy saying something about everyone needing to leave.
Focusing on the figure and the feel of their magic I knew right away who it was. “We need to find some wizards who can fight him off.” Lucy said as the figure produced flames and began fighting the wizards in the stadium.
“Lucy I don’t think anyone in this Stadium is going to be strong enough to fight him off.” I said as I walked up next to her, holding my arm over my face trying to block the heat. She looked at me confused. I just nodded towards the fight. “Just watch.”
She still seemed confused but turned back to the fight. As the heat rose and the stadium began to melt I watched as realization struck Lucy. Just as she was about to say something, the announcer beat her to it. “It’s Natsu Dragneel.” Earning a massive cheer from the crowd.
As if on queue from the announcement, a familiar blue cat popped up between me and Lucy. “Hey, It’s been awhile. How you doing?” Hearing the exceed’s voice I turned and offered a small smile.
Lucy also turned to our flying friend. “Happy, you’re back.” She exclaimed, still covering her chest after Natsu’s heat melted her clothes.
“Yeah, well Natsu insisted on challenging whoever won this year’s Grand magic Game. So here we are I guess.” Happy explained.
I nodded, turning back to the fight, or well what was supposed to be a fight but looked more like an execution. “They don’t seem to be putting up much of a fight.” I heard Lucy say as she observed the same thing as me. I watched for only a few more seconds, listening to Natsu yell as he took on random wizards who jumped into fight him, before turning to Lucy.
“I’m gonna head back to your apartment to rest.” I said, earning a confused look from both her and Happy. “I’m just tired and it’s super hot right now. It was nice seeing you Happy.” I explained as I walked away giving a gentle wave towards Happy.
As I walked away I heard Happy begin to follow me. “Wait Y/n, don’t you want to say hi to Natsu?” I paused in my trek out of the stadium. He wasn’t wrong. I did want to say hi to Natsu, but actually seeing him for the first time in a year all my emotions i thought I suppressed came rushing back.
“Look Happy, I’m glad to see that you both are ok but I can’t see him. Not right now. I need to take some time and gather my thoughts.” I said looking at the cat. I watched as his face dropped. “Hey don’t be sad, you’re Happy you should be happy. I’ll talk to him later. You guys have fun with Lucy.” I offered him a gentle smile.
He looked off to the side before sighing. “Okay, but we did miss you while we were gone.” He said as he gave me a quick hug. I returned the hug patting his head before waving him off and moving to leave the stadium.
After I reached Lucy’s apartment, I realized I would only have a short period of time to process everything before Lucy came back and Natsu would definitely be with her. I sighed before deideng that I would go for a walk to clear my head. Quickly writing a note on a spare piece of paper saying I would be back later, I left the apartment again.
I had been walking around the city for quite a few hours just thinking of how to deal with Natsu being back. Sure I was happy that he was okay and that he came back but the hurt from him leaving felt fresh. Taking a seat on one of the many little bridges that dotted the town, I sighed watching the water. I thought I had finally found a quiet place to work out my emotions, but before I could really start thinking, I heard footsteps approach from the side.
“You’re avoiding me.” I froze up at the sound of his voice. “Why?” Natsu asked as he sat next to me. Refusing to look at him, I shook my head. “Don’t lie to me Y/n, I could smell you at the stadium, and then at Lucy’s apartment. Plus Happy said that you needed to gather your thoughts, whatever that means.”
My shoulders sagged as I sighed. “I’m sorry. I just got scared, I guess.” I said not knowing what else to say.
I could feel the bewildered look he was giving me without even looking at him. “Scared, of what? It’s just me. I’m the same guy I’ve always been.” He said as if it was the most obvious answer. Sensing that I still wasn’t ready to talk he sighed. “I should be the one apologizing. I left without talking to you first and that was terrible. I didn’t think that Gramps would disband the guild so I figured you would still have everyone in Fairy Tail to lean on. I was so focused on getting stronger and fighting Zeref that I failed to see I was being a shitty friend and an even shittier boyfriend.” Natsu said, hesitantly reaching for my hand. “I’m sorry that I left like that. Please let me make it up to you. I’ll do whatever you want me to just please don’t leave me.” Hearing the hurt in his voice, I finally looked at him.
It was rare to see Natsu cry and so seeing the tears gently fall down his face startled me. I wanted to just cave and accept his apology and let things go back to the way they were, but I needed to say my piece. “I agree you were a shitty friend and a shitty boyfriend. I was already hurt physically from fighting Tartaros, then Lucy told me the Guild broke up and to top it off when I got home all I was greeted with was a letter. I was broken, I thought I wasn’t good enough, that the reason you didn’t bother to wait for me to heal was because you figured I’d just hold you back.” I began venting out the feelings I had kept bottled up for the past year. “Natsu I waited for you everyday. I woke up hoping that it was all just a dream and that you and Happy would be there arguing over whether or not fish should be cooked. And it broke me to live in our little house all alone, it took everything in me not to abandon it and move on.” I watched his face fall even more at the idea of me leaving our shared home. “But every time I got close to giving in to my dark thoughts and leaving, I remembered that you were out there somewhere and you would need somewhere to return to.” I explained, watching as his face slowly lightened up.
Taking a moment to breathe, I thought about what else I need to say. “I’m not saying we can go back to exactly how it was before, but I would be ok with trying again. Just promise that if you want to go on an extended training mission again, you talk with me first. And I mean actually talk to me, not just leave a letter saying you’ll be back in a year.” I said, giving him a pointed look.
And like magic, Natsu went from a hurt puppy dog to a puppy that was just given his favorite toy back. “I promise. I’ve missed you so much, I regretted leaving you behind every day I was gone.” He said with a bright smile. “Can I hug you now?” I laughed at the question, but nodded. I was quickly pulled into his arms, and I couldn’t help but sigh as I was enveloped by the familiar gentle smell of smoke that always lingered on him. “I really did miss you.” I heard him say as he buried his face in my neck.
Patting his back and nuzzling into his scarf, I let out a small sound of agreement. After spending a few minutes in Natsu’s arms, I finally pulled away as a question suddenly struck me. “How did you find me all the way out here? We’re nowhere near Lucy’s apartment.” I asked.
He tilted his head for a second before speaking. “I followed your scent, obviously. When we got back to her place and Lucy read your note, I wanted to head out right away, but her and Happy made me wait to give you time to think.” He explained like it was obvious. “Speaking of Lucy’s place, do you know the way back cause I have no clue where we are.” He asked.
I laughed, of course he was able to track my scent after hours of me walking around but ask him to find a specific apartment in the big city and he draws a blank. “Yes, Natsu, I know the way back. Let’s go before Lucy and Happy start thinking I killed you or something.” Natsu laughed in response before offering his hand to help me stand up. Once I was standing he pulled me into another hug, placing a kiss on my forehead before pulling away and motioned for me to lead the way.

The Summer Hikaru Died and onomatopoeia
I've wanted to gush about this topic for a while and i have no organized thoughts but a lot of feelings i need to get out. First and foremost being "Holy shit this manga is so damn loud" which is a weird feeling to have since manga is generally understood to be a silent medium.
And yet the Mangaka MokuMoku Ren has filled their work to the brim with sound. Now comics using onomatopoeia (words that echo a noise ie: crunch) is nothing new the sound of a fist hitting it's target and walls being wrecked is nothing new. But usually onomatopoeia is worked into whatever action is resulting in the noise
adding both a sense of motion as well as sound. Which is what makes The Summer Hikaru Died's use of it so unique and compelling. To utilize onomatopoiea you have to give up on space that could otherwise be going to deatil work in the background or foreground. Now this is fine with smaller unobtrusive effects like Wolverine's claw extending, and there's numerous example's where a sound will take up large portions of the page to show how loud something like a bomb going off is. But i've yet to see another comic western or otherwise so consistently use this facet of the medium to instill such claustrophobia and dread. As a slower paced horror manga The Summer Hikaru Died builds it's suspense mostly through atomosphere, the supernatural happenings weighing on the surrounding evironment until they break the surface
The use of sound is heavy, it's harsh, it's a vehicle to show how wrong things have gotten from the whisper of "it's coming" heard in the ringing bell of a train crossing to the omnipresent call of birds, bugs, and frogs that pushes in on the paneling shrinking the world with their cacophony.
the way sound shrinks the world making reader and character both feel suffocated by the drone is matched by how the manga uses silence as a way to make the characters feel exposed and vulnerable. the page is now empty of distraction the world of the story on full display and it still feels wrong it's agorophobic, at least amidst the din there was some sense of anonymity being just one voice among hundrends.
even the speech bubble feels out of place as it wanders off desperate to fill the space. The manga is full of these moments of sound and silence in some dance with eachother always too much or too little, never comfortable. It adds a lot to the horror of the manga, and is just one part of many that makes The Summer Hikaru Died such an excellent manga, every chapter I can feel my skin crawl as the setting becomes more hostile to the charactres while they uncover more of the truth of their circumstances.
#i didn't know how to end this so i just stopped writing#the summer hikaru died#hikaru ga shinda natsu#i wrote this at 2:30am so sorry if it's almost completely incoherent#manga#horror#i thouroughly reccomend writing something in a way that would make your english teacher want to scalp you very therapeutic

The soft, cushy surface of Lucy’s thighs has Natsu fading in and out of consciousness as he rests his head on them. It feels like he’s sleeping on a cloud; only this cloud has the same comforting smell as his best friend, and that’s what makes it all the better.
It’s a position he frequents when they’re travelling and he has to do all he can to try keep his innards from becoming outtards, so he’s never really had the chance to appreciate it until now.
Now that he’s had the chance, he never wants to leave.
Thankfully, Lucy makes no protest.
Instead, a hand makes its way to his scalp, and he feels it gently tangle through his hair, nails running softly against his skin, and the feeling practically jolts him awake in the best way possible.
Something about her touch makes him want to purr in her lap. She has him like putty in her hand, and he’s never felt this way about anyone else before.
If anyone else were around, he might have been mortified for them to see just how soft and mushy Lucy makes him, but when it’s just them, he doesn’t mind.
“Keep doing that,” he murmurs, his voice muffled as his lips brush against the skin of her thigh, but he knows he can hear her when it’s the only sound in the room. At the last moment, he remembers his manners and speaks up before Lucy can remind him of them. “Please.”
He can practically hear the smile in Lucy’s voice as she softly laughs at him, looking down adoringly at her napping partner in her lap.
“Of course I can,” she replies, and Natsu knows he’s about to have the best nap of his life.
