Thirteen Moons on a Turtle’s Back: A Native American Year of Moons by Joseph Bruchac and Jonathan London

Joseph Bruchac was born in 1942 in Saratoga Springs, New York, and is of Abenaki, English, and Slovak ethnicity. He is best known for his work as a Native writer and storyteller, with more than 120 books and numerous awards.  Bruchac is also a performing storyteller and musician who plays several Native instruments, including the hand drum and wooden flute. 

Other books include his novel March Toward the Thunder featuring Native men who enlisted in the American Civil War; based on the experiences of his great-grandfather, Louis Bowman. Joseph Bruchac has also written non-fiction such as Code talker: A Book About the Navajo Marines, and How to start and sustain a literary magazine: practical strategies for publications of lasting value.

The book featured today, Thirteen Moons on a Turtle’s Back shares stories related to each section of the year from different Indigenous groups from the Northeastern region of the United States.

🖤UTTER DARKNESS🖤

She danced in the rain,

Sang with the birds,

And was a generous friend to the broken hearted.

Seeing them each as unique,

And beautifully flawed beings.

We all have a power greater than anything in the universe...

There will come times of choice, decision making; an accordance to act in such a manner.

A decisive manner- that which will determine the outcomes of every situation and experience; in life.

Whereas us whom were given free will;

Responsibility we must accept.

She was always so tempered,

Out looking for danger;

A menace.

She took on the world,

While battling the rage within,

Deprivation; the unwillingness of some souls.

How so easily it is to judge, manipulate,

And echo vengeance,

But how hard it seems to accept, manage and love willingly.

Her conspicuous knowledge,

And freedom loving heart was therefore lost.

Given agitating circumstances;

Derailing her of any hope left from within.

How she could so easily detect right off the back,

A grieving heart,

A lost soul,

And a narcissistic being.

Able to depict the good from the bad.

The dauntless nature she ascribed;

Inherited from her ancestors.

The tribe that raised her,

The ones who understood her,

And the ones she could speak freely to,

Without a doubt of their love for her.

The way she viewed the world,

Was not in a way all else were able to see.

The necessities of life only made her more vigilant; observant and awake.

Her becoming inconclusive to an extent.

The brilliance of her mind,

Darkened from impulsive acts,

She never expressed nor released.

If only you knew the visions, the thoughts; the wickedness, she knew.

You would then truthfully understand,

Just why her actions had resulted in death.

The emotional pain one feels;

Insidious pressures of modern day life.

Staggering daily with perplexing thoughts,

The outcomes that would result,

should she ever interfere;

Thus compelling her to never.

The pain was becoming so intense.

Suffering from everything she just knew.

Cognizance she had embodied,

From many lifetimes of experiences,

And praise; inflicting weariness of the mind, body, and spirit.

Ripple effects of utter darknesses.

I'm a sucker for #nonfiction #medical books, especially ones that involve surgery. This book is amazing. It shows the willpower a human has to change their life and adapt to the situations at hand. The surgeon who wrote the book started in poverty, got a business degree, went back for medicine, went to be a war surgeon, survived two tours, and then discovered he had a brain aneurysm. 💜So I called in my Plaquenil (Hydroxychloroquine) refill today. It has been said, that Hydroxychloroquine is being used as part of the cure for the Coronavirus Pandemic (COVID - 19). If you have Lupus or any medical conditions that has you taking Plaquenil, you might want to make it a priority to get your refills sooner rather than later. I read on one of my Lupus Facebook Group pages that a lupus fighter had been denied her Plaquenil. I believe it's only a matter of time, until we all get denied our medication(s) that we depend on, and that has helped us to live a more comfortable lifestyle. Us, Lupus Warrior's are very fragile, our bones, our bodies, and our health issues. This Coronavirus could kill us given our weak immune systems, so we need to be aware of how this pandemic concerns us (Lupus Patients). 🌎Resting is a big part of healing, taking breaks, and living in the current moment, as well. In order to heal we sometimes need to remember how it used to be. How many of us had lived before all this. When material things weren't admired so much. When we would plant our own fruits and vegetables- not knowing what fast food was. When we would go to the well or fountain, bringing buckets full of water back to our households. We tend to not think how good we have it; we forget how it used to be, and that at any moment all modern day things, experiences, and everyday glories, can be taken away from us. This is a time where we realise how grateful we are and that whenever we should need each other, we are here for each other no matter what. We need to start taking care of mother earth and the animals who all were here before us. We have been reminded how precious our home is and how much we do need it. We have all been called to remember where we come from and what our purposes are here on earth. Subconsciously we know; however our human forms are manipulating us to discard what is already inside us all. We were all meant to heal and become healers. We were all meant to remember and we are all here for a much bigger purpose, then we have yet to discover.
