The Braided Janes' Museica teams ups with The National Museum of Mexican Art to visualize and co-produce La Decima Musa, a queer, femme fronted, multidisciplinary event highlighting talent from around the U.S.

NMMA’s Sor Juana Festival presents La Decima Musa, a two-day event in collaboration with Museica's Art Studio.
Day 1 on Saturday, March 15th, features a selection of artists showcasing fashion, music, art, and a market by the Mexican Folk Art Collective. The evening will close with a live musical performance from @maderaonce , a four-piece band that pays tribute to Mexican-regional and traditional music with a contemporary spin and @braidedjanes, a queer, femme-fronted Latin alternative band making waves nationwide.
Day 2 will feature free workshops by artist Gabriela Jiménez Marván, who brings Mexican folk art to life through clay and drawings. Participants in clay sculpture-making workshops titled "Volar" will create unique sculptures representing what freedom means to each guest. The workshops will be tied to Sor Juana and her ability to transcend through her creative expression. The National Museum of Mexican Art presents the 31st annual Sor Juana Festival, honoring one of Mexico’s greatest writers, Sor Juana Inés de la Cruz. A 17th-century Mexican nun who valued and fought for a woman’s right to education, Juana was a celebrated playwright, mathematician and poet in her own time and continues to inspire women to this day. Through this unique festival, we celebrate the legacy of Sor Juana Inés de la Cruz and pays tribute to the rich artistic accomplishments of Mexican women from across the globe.
The Sor Juana Festival continues to challenge conventions and amplify voices that shape the future of leadership and artistry. This year’s theme, “Redefining Narratives Through Impact,” highlights the transformative power of first-voice experiences, celebrating women who break boundaries and inspire the next generation of visionaries.
Since its founding in 1994, the Sor Juana Festival continues to be unique in its scope and focus. The festival has presented high profile artists such as: Angélica Aragón, Vikki Carr, Lynda Carter, Ana Castillo, Sandra Cisneros, Elena Poniatowska, Ely Guerra and Julieta Venegas.

This is one of the illustrations that I have done for @arts_midwest for an article on the National Museum on Mexican Art (@explorenmma) on how they are coping with the Covid-19 pandemic. It is one of my favorite museums in Chicago and I am impressed with the creative solutions that they have found... Thank you @horton.alana for the superb art direction. The link to the article is in my bio!

Every year the #nationalmuseumofmexicanart invites an Artist to create a mural for its annual Day of the Dead exhibition, this year I had the honor to create this #Linocut print installation for “Sólo un poco aquí: Day of the Dead” exhibition, curated by Dolores Mercado. Besides the mural I also did another installment inside the gallery honoring #EssentialWorkers . Sadly this year the exhibition is not open to public but you could visit @explorenmma for more information about virtual tours! #dayofthedead #wheatpaste #catrina #nmmart #printmaking #posada #chicago #artistsoninstagram #printmakersofinstagram #chicagoart #pilsenchicago #contemporaryprintmaking #carlosbarberena https://www.instagram.com/p/CFe-n5hA6dv/?igshid=1x2a3vzwb9pu

The U.S. Postal Service celebrates Day of the Dead with colorful new stamps by Mexican artist and designer Luis Fitch, founder and creative director of Minneapolis cross-cultural design agency UNO. We’re thrilled to host a dedication ceremony on Monday, October 25th at 10:00 am at the National Museum of Mexican Art. Come meet the artist and see the beautiful stamps for yourself! The dedication is open to the general public. RSVP at [email protected]. The new stamps from the U.S. Postal Service showcase the Day of the Dead holiday in all its flower-bedecked splendor. This pane of 20 Forever stamps contains five rows of four colorful stamps featuring several iconic elements of a traditional Day of the Dead offering. The vibrant colors of marigold flowers and other embellishments, along with the white of the sugar skulls, stand out brightly from the stamps’ black background. #diademuertos #dayofthedead #usps #nationalmuseumofmexicanart #luisfitch #dayofthedeadstamps #chicago #mexicanartist (at National Museum of Mexican Art) https://www.instagram.com/p/CVVuQaVFPFj/?utm_medium=tumblr

Lots of murals throughout the Chicago area are in plain sight on commercial and residential buildings. But some are off the beaten path. The mural titled “Reach For Peace” happens to be in an alleyway on 18th Street next to the Los Comales restaurant. It was created in 2011 as a collaborative effort with lead artist Jesus Rodriguez and the youth with the Yollocalli Arts Reach program, part of the National Museum of Mexican Art. According to @Yollocalli the mural was created “as a way to promote peace and solidarity in Pilsen and surrounding communities.” Yollocalli has around 50 murals in Chicago. Visit yollocalli.org for a map of the murals and information on programs. @yolandanews #MuralMonday #Pilsen #18thStreet #LosComales #Mexico #MexicanFood #Yollocalli #PilsenMurals #Chicago #ChicagoMurals #PublicArt #ChicagoPublicArt #YouthArt #YollocalliArtsReach #ChicagoYouth #NationalMuseumOfMexicanArt https://ift.tt/2PhL4uC
