OC Interview: Vania
[camera template] ❧ tagged by @tarmac-rat — thanks choom! see the adorable interview with their Riley here
Name?
V: Vania Perez. Tiny Mike: Yo. Mike Kowalski. Interviewer: We've run a profile on you already, Tiny. Just getting to know Vania, here. Mike: Well it'll have to be a twofer, because I'm takin' her to dinner in an hour and I ain't just gonna putz around Kabuki the whole time like a fuckin' delivery drone. Interviewer (to V): We'll run this by you before it's published. V: Whatever.
Nickname?
V: Started going by "V" at Arasaka, but I'm looser about it these days. I like my given name. If someone wants to give me a different nickname, they are free to do so. Mike: You tell 'em, hotshot.
Gender?
V: I don't think this is an interesting question.
Star sign?
V: Taurus, though I'm not sure what it means. Mike: Far's I understand, it means she loves dick and gets croissant crumbs all over the bed.
Height?
V: 160cm. Mike: I dunno how to do the centimeters to feet an' inches, but she's definitely lying. Subtract four or ten or somethin'. [Interviewee's height was confirmed to be 159cm --ed.]
Orientation?
V: Big, strong arms and uncomplicated psyches. Mike: Aw, you like my arms?
Nationality/ethnicity?
V: Have a U.K. passport, as much as that's worth these days. My mother's parents were Puerto Rican, and I'm not sure where the sperm came from. Interviewer: You're not close with your father, I take it? V: No, I mean, my mum simply went to a sperm bank. She's old-fashioned like that. But I think she would have used that service that's just cloning plus gene editing if it were legal back then. (glancing at Mike) By the way, d'you know how much that costs? Interviewer: Uh, no.
Favorite fruit?
V: Mum used to acquire a pineapple for my birthday every year, but the last time I had one was at an Arasaka company party. Mike (looking up from a search for BEST PINEAPPLES NIGHT CITY): Wait, did you just say "acquire"? What is this, the Night City Literary Review? Interviewer: I'm from the Watson Weekly Mirror. Mike (muttering, returning to search results): Oh, those fuckin' hacks.
Favorite season?
V: Suppose it's autumn, but there don't seem to be seasons in Night City. Or else there are about forty of them and they are all slight variations on "filthy rain" and "heat stroke."
Favorite flower?
V: I don't think this is an interesting question. Mike: Answer it, sweetie. V: Jasmine, I suppose.
Coffee, tea, or hot chocolate?
V: I like black tea with a bit of sugar and some cream. Mike: She likes a lot of cream. V: Are you writing down the things he says too? Interviewer: Yes. V: Do you accept bribes? Look, just give me a call before this runs, please. [Interviewee was unavailable for follow-up questions at the time this piece was published. --ed.]
Average hours of sleep?
V: Back when Arasaka was logging my biometrics and pumping me with all the good drugs, it was a consistent 6.25. I couldn't tell you now, though it's surely not enough. I haven't figured out how to use my new interface to start tracking it. Mike: Psh. Some "hacker." V: I'm trained in network security and combat quickhacking, love. That doesn't mean I know how to navigate neuralink menus or program your VCR.
Dog or cat person?
V: Mm, suppose I identify with cats more, but dogs and dog people are fascinating to me. Where do they find the energy to be like that? Mike: Damnit, gettin' hungry. Gonna run to the store for a snack. You need anything, babe? Tiancha? Locust jerky? Holobites? Foot rub? Anything?
Dream trip?
V: Okay, now that he's gone.. well, I really want to make it back home to London, but that's mostly to see my mother. I don't miss the town all that much. Been fucked for decades. But Mike's got this idea for a camping trip down the coast, and I have to admit I'm intrigued. I mean, it sounds dangerous and frankly a bit filthy, but I've never seen the rest of California, and I've heard it's still quite beautiful in parts.
Favorite fictional character?
V: So Jake, the protagonist of Bushido X, is really quite interesting because— Mike: I'm back. You talkin' bout those frickin' Bushido flicks again? God damn, when's this thing gonna wrap up?
Number of blankets you sleep with?
V: I don't think this is an interesting question and I'm starving.
Fun fact?
V: In physics, a "jiffy" is a unit of time measuring 3 × 10^−24 seconds. Also, we're late to dinner. Mike: Ciao.

Love me Mercilessly Kakashi x f!Oc Chapter 37 Frostbite word count: 14k tw: Ptsd episode (brief canon typical violence/mentions of blood), brief mentions of trauma, brief mentions of childhood trauma/neglect/abuse, a couple mildly suggestive lines. And a bit of overindulgent fluff at the end hehe [previous chapters on Ao3] Kakashi is faced with a life changing decision. Akami and Sasuke navigate their changing relationship, and struggle to find the right words to define what that relationship really means.
Kakashi had been on assignment for well over a month. Akami tried hard not to count the days, it set her teeth on edge when he’d been absent for so long and unable to send word. She was afraid that she still was not enough. Akami'd worry her hands through her hair, frightened that he’d die in battle in a foreign land— for his county, for a comrade, some innocent life he thought he could save. It’s what he was supposed to do–it’s what they’re all supposed to do but Akami slept better knowing that if it came down to it she would walk away--come home to Sasuke and Kakashi the rest of the world be damned; they were her world.
Her pupils pulsed with terror each time Kakashi crossed the Village gates chakra exhausted and covered in blood. She knew he would give his dying breath to save them both…he would do it for almost any Konoha nin. She wouldn’t admit that it made her feel like a failure that he couldn’t put her before his duty. All it would do was start a fight and make him feel guilty and the very last thing Kakashi Hatake needed was another reason to feel guilty. He'd defend both his love for her and his love for Konoha and Akami would argue that was the problem right there.
At the very least work kept her busy and her mind occupied. The Jonin department had a meeting scheduled with Kusagakure. Officially the meeting would take place on the 22nd of March—unofficially the meeting was set for the 28th of April. Kusgakure was known for their diplomacy, and though the Hidden Village was never outright foe— due in part to their proximity—terms were shaky at best. The Nations had been sending correspondence since a little after her hire. Akami and Shikaku’s slow growing self proclaimed startup, better known between the two as the ‘strategic division’ proposed the formal sit down; for once the Council consented.
Konoha wanted to get their hands on Kusa’s intelligence. Their prime location and unpredictable terrain aided their abilities to so successfully read and anticipate the movements of other nations, so it came as no surprise the Hidden Village pumped out shinobi highly skilled in espionage. Although Konoha’s aim was to get signatures stating peace between borders, another nation would always be a threat, treaty or not; as the saying went, keep your friends close and your enemies closer.
The meeting was a couple months away…hell even the phony meeting was two months out but Akami was anxious. Shikaku requested that she come along for negotiations. Aside from Hiruzen’s hand selected escort, Shikaku wanted Akami to choose the rest of their detail. She’d been on diplomatic missions before, accompanying Danzo, disguised in a henge or hidden in the shadows–those meetings ended by jamming a spear of ice right into some noblemen's brainstem. Or better yet slaughtering the entire councilroom the second the sound seals went up and the door locked. This time it was different, she’d be playing the part of herself, Akami Ketsueki assistant Jonin Commander of the Village Hidden in the Leaves.
While Akami went over the roster and upcoming mission schedules for the evening, Sasuke popped a movie in the VCR.
Despite it being his night to choose, he knocked out halfway through the film, head nestled on Akami’s lap. She tried her best not to disturb him, in the same ways she’d get trapped beneath one of Kakashi’s ninken happily snoozing while her legs went numb, she managed to drape a throw blanket over Sasuke and dragged the mission request forms across the coffee table with her foot.
She lowered the volume on the television to soothe Sasuke and not distract her. The voices and dim lighting faded into the background like a crackling white noise in her focus.
Genma Shiranui and Radiō Namiashi, both expertly trained under Lord Fourth, now often employed as Hiruzen’s personal guard were already appointed to their detail. She was certain the Hokage would be taking an Anbu escort as well. Their aim would be to project the Hokage and listen from the Shadows; so she could expect at least two additional bodies.
For the ‘strategic division’s escort she considered Gai. Akami looked over his file. While she never questioned his intelligence or skill he was a bit of an acquired taste. She struck his name from the list of potentials.
‘Plink’
Akami glanced at the television beneath her brow, assuming the sound of droplets must have come from the movie. The paper fluttered as she flipped through the next document.
Aoba Yamashiro. A Tokubetsu Jonin, assisted in T and I. Inochi was a fan. His special techniques worked well in interrogation, which meant he should function well in a negotiation. He summoned crows — Akami was all too familiar with crows. Shikaku sent him out with Raidō a lot. Raidō — and Kokutō for that matter — would be accompanying them. Seeing as Aoba often provided assistance to swordsmen, theoretically he would be able to adapt to Akami’s fighting style, if need be.
‘Plink’ ‘Plink’
Akami smiled with the pen cap between her teeth. She circled his name, the nib scraping against the parchment.
‘Plink’
Sasuke snuggled in her lap. Akami brushed the hair from his forehead, smoothing the wrinkles from his brow. She shuffled her paperwork again, the files cascading from the corner beneath her thumb.
‘Plink–Plink’
Kurenai Yuhi- recently appointed Jonin. Kurenai was calm, sharp and resourceful. A sensor type specializing in genjutsu. Akami’s sensing abilities were roughly that of an experienced genin. Shikaku was strong enough thanks to his yin release, but Kurenai would make a far better tracker and was skilled with seals. Her mastery of genjutsu had her seeing through any and every illusion–making her a good second for Shikaku’s Clan techniques as well. Akami circled her name.
‘Plink’
‘Plink–Plink’
Akami snapped her head up. She was certain now it wasn’t the television. The sound was too clear and crisp to come from the neighbors especially given the hour. It sounded like water droplets hitting the floor. Did she leave the tap on in the kitchen?
She craned her neck over the backend of the couch in an impossible attempt to see the sink–though she would not be able to tell from that angle. She frowned in the dark and turned back to Sasuke.
Akami jumped when she saw the figure shrouded in shadows lurking in the entryway. She laid a hand protectively over Sasuke.
‘Plink’
Kakashi stood still as a statue, even his gaze looked carved from stone. He concealed his chakra–his entire presence so excellently the hair at the nape of Akami’s neck stood on end.
It made her uneasy to have been unable to smell the blood pooling at his feet. Coating his armor, dripping from his hair and splattered across his mask–the viscous blood red of his eye illuminated by the flickering colored light from the television.
Akami discarded the documents, lifted Sasuke’s head from her lap and placed it gently on the cushion. She stood, rounding the couch moving as little as possible.
“Kakashi,” she whispered, attempting to lull him from his catatonic state. He didn’t react, eyes trained on the wall with his thousand yard stare. “Kakashi?” Akami tried again, when he did not so much as blink. She evaded a puddle of blood. The floorboards groaned beneath her steps. Hound snapped to attention. Pupils blown, eyes narrowed in distrust. Akami didn't need to see his face to feel that his teeth were bared.
His body took over, a preservation instinct ingrained into every ninja–– it did not matter if that preservation was for your own life or the intel you carried—it was that instinct that brought you back home even if your mind was miles away, out in the thicket trudging through enemy territory. So as Kakashi stood there in the dark it was only in the flesh, the rest of him was still struggling to come back home.
And though Akami knew he couldn't help it, it made her angry to see him look at her like that. “You’re home now.” She said, unable to contain a slight bitter sneer.
She reached out to touch his shoulder, he swatted her hand away. Ensnaring her wrist. She felt her bones creak in his hold, but did not attempt to wrench herself free.
“Why don’t you shower—change.” He’d feel better if he washed the blood off. It was harder to re-assimilate to life in the Village than it was to be elbow deep in the enemy's guts, — she’d been there plenty herself. For all the lessons they learned at the Academy no one ever taught them to compartmentalize, either you figured out how best to manage or the paranoia ate away at you.
“It’s okay.” She said, His pupils fluttered and focused on hers, “you’re okay,” the curl of his lip rescinded and his grip loosened. “You’re safe—“ She started, opening her mouth to attempt to lull him from his mission-like trance just as Sasuke stirred in his sleep.
In Kakashi’s state of hypervigilance he could hear the fabric of the couch rustle. His grip tightened and his neck eerily cranned toward the sound.
Akami’s muscles tensed, “Stand down.”
He did not heed her order. His chakra boiled over like a kettle on an open flame and killing intent seeped out in a screeching steam.
Despite herself Akami could not help but panic, Calm down or leave!” she demanded, tearing her wrist from his hold, effectively reclaiming his attention. Which in hindsight was a mistake and Hound pushed them back against the wall, boxing her in. He was seeing threats everywhere.
The chill of the porcelain mask against her cheek was startling compared to the heat blazing off him. Akami’s eyes met his, pupils so thin they were swallowed by yellow. The cushions on the back of the couch shifted, Sasuke grumbled.
“Kakashi, you need to calm down.” Yet his eyes both the smoky charcoal and unsettling red, were blown, dilated beyond belief from adrenaline. He still wasn’t there.
He gave Akami no choice…

Mastermind Chapter 5/9*
Chapter Rating M (Entire Work E) Co-Written with @tofuttim. Read here on AO3 *Remaining Chapters to post daily!
What if I told you none of it was accidental
And the first night that you saw me, I knew I wanted your body
I laid the groundwork and then, just like clockwork
The dominoes cascaded in a line
What if I told you I'm a mastermind?
-Lyrics by Taylor Swift
Despite her tiny stature, Mulder saw Scully enter the airport immediately. She walked with a confident grace that befitted a woman much taller and older than she was.
“Scully,” he yelled from across the airport terminal.
She smiled and walked towards him; causing him to grin back without even thinking about it.
He’d gone home the night before and popped one of his adult videos into the VCR, the desired effect found easily, but he was surprised that images of her smile and her smirk at his question about extraterrestrials, popped into his head as he was coming. The memory of this now had turned him from flaccid to partially erect in the middle of Reagan National Airport on a Wednesday morning.
“Mulder, good morning,” she sighed. Mulder, he thought, amused. So we are going with this last name thing.
He was glad to see that she traveled light, her belongings in one small blue suitcase. His last partner Diana always brought a ton of stuff and he had grown more and more annoyed at dealing with her baggage.
“Wanna grab a bite?” Mulder asked. Scully nodded and followed him.
As they sat in the airport bar, learning each other’s coffee preferences, he felt the same strong energy between them that he had the day before in his office.
“Scully…have we met before?”
“Met? No. I’m sure we haven’t,” she glanced down at her coffee nervously. The profiler in him could tell she was withholding something.
“Are you sure?Never at all?”
“Well…”
Here we go, he thought.
“...I saw you lecture about a month ago at Quantico. I was late and had to sit in the back; I got delayed by a cadet, so I just heard the question and answer. I thought your work sounded interesting.”
“ Interesting, Scully?” he asked, wiggling his eyebrows in flirtation.I have to stop flirting with her. She’s my fucking partner and I don’t need to go through another complicated relationship, he thought.
“Mulder,” she smiled sheepishly, sipping her coffee. “You know how we debated yesterday, throwing out hypotheses.”
“Yeah,” he answered, curiously.
“Well, I basically debated everything you said, to myself, in the back of the room,” she smirked and took a bite of her blueberry muffin.
“Wow,” he said, gasping, “Was the presentation that bad? You disagreed with everything?”
“I liked it,” she smiled; a crumb of blueberry muffin stuck to her left side upper lip. “I just thought there were some rules of physics that should be applied.”
She was using his words; the same words he said yesterday about her thesis. She’s mocking me. I guess she thinks I’m an asshole , he looked down into his coffee. “Oh, okay” he said, defeated.
“Mulder! I’m kidding, it was great. Best instructor lecture I’d heard,” she said, with a big smile across her face.
Mulder noticed how her blue eyes sparkled when she smiled. He considered what she would do if he reached across the table to brush that crumb off, but before he could find out, she had already grabbed a napkin and wiped her mouth clean. Catching himself daydreaming about her again; he sat up abruptly.
She placed her hand on top of his on the table to reassure him, “Although I really did debate you, to myself,” she laughed.
As her hand touched his, he felt their exchange of energy again. His breathing caught and heart raced. His eyes were down, focused on his coffee, so he hoped she hadn’t noticed them shutting as the visions of their hands, working together in various dangerous, happy, sad and erotic situations flashed before his eyes in a millisecond. She’d been at that lecture. It was her, she touched his hand, she was the one eliciting all of these reactions.
Mulder took a deep breath trying to settle himself back down and looked at her. She was panting a bit and her lips were parted. Was she feeling this intensity every time they touched too?
She moved her hand back to her muffin and he cleared his throat, pulling himself together. “But you didn’t talk to me at the end? We didn’t connect?” Mulder asked.
She paused for a moment, busying her hands with her coffee cup. “No, we didn't talk. You had a crowd around you. I took one of your cards and I left.”
“Huh.” That’s interesting, he thought, smiling at her in wonderment.
“Oh, Mulder, we need to go. The flight should be boarding.” She nudged his hand and he felt it again; the spark.
//
Again as their hands touched she felt it; some otherworldly feeling she’d only ever felt with him. The spark of energy soothed her for a while, but not long enough, as the plane bounced and banked with a weather anomaly, making her anxious upon landing.
As they began to work the case, Scully was fascinated by the odd circumstances of the X-File. But, she quickly realized arguing with Mulder in person was very different than having a one-sided debate with herself in a darkened lecture hall. He was animated and passionate and when she pushed forward science and facts, he became annoyed and impatient.
One thing was clear though, he had her back. He did not question her or her ideas in front of the local law enforcement and he still listened to her suggestions even when he seemed annoyed. She enjoyed his company even when the moments were tense. She felt like she wasn’t alone; like somehow she could already trust him completely. He must have enjoyed her company too, he asked her to go for a jog with him but honestly he looked too damn cute in his backwards hat and sweatpants and she didn’t think she could stand to be around him like that without getting herself into some kind of romantic bind.
Yes, Scully was realizing how attracted she was to him. His intellect, his obsession for the truth, not to mention his athletic body and perfectly chiseled face; she was in trouble . Even though she believed they’d end up together someday, she didn’t want to start their professional partnership by sleeping with him. She needed to stop thinking about her partner in that way, she needed him to take her seriously.
Another thing that was clear to her was she had no interest in moving to Oregon anytime soon. Returning to her hotel room after a second long day on the case, she hoped to warm up as the sheets of cold rain had frozen her to the bone. She curled under blankets as she worked on her report. She never thought she would be using the phrases ‘cannot be validated' or 'unsubstantiated’ so much in her life.
Suddenly the still pounding rain struck another blow to her evening as the hotel room went dark with the loss of power. She sighed, deciding to try to get warm with a bath. As she undressed she felt something odd on her lower back. She tucked her hand under the edge of her panties;it couldn’t be…bumps, like those on Peggy O’Dell?
Not even one full case under her belt and she was panicked. She threw her robe over her bra and panties and raced over to her partner’s room. Without hesitation, she knocked on his door. She was surprised at how quickly he answered it.
Scully stepped into his room, adorned only by the light of several candles. She hesitated for a mere second before loosening her robe and letting the top half fall from her body. She turned to see Mulder staring at her in confusion. She nodded towards her lower back. He slowly moved down her torso, using the candle to light her skin inch by inch, looking for what she was drawing his attention to. His hand reached out as he found the bumps, his fingertips softly grazing her lower back. She gasped as she saw a million visions flash in a second again. His hand on her lower back guiding her out of a room, over and over again. His hand on that spot as he hugs her, holds her. His hand holding her up by that spot as he fucks her against a wall.
She sighed as he continued to stare at the spots.Someday this man is going to fuck me against a wall, she thought, dumbfounded by the picture she’d seen in her mind.
//
Mulder’s brain short circuited for a moment; she had a beautiful body that she’d apparently hidden under oversized suits. But then, as his hand touched the small of her back, he had visions of his hand belonging there, magnetized to that spot.He was guiding her around by that spot. His hand possessing that spot as he lifted her hips to taste her. These images didn’t feel like hopes or dreams, but instead like prophecy.
What do these visions mean? He wondered, before she interrupted his train of thought. “Mulder what are they?” she asked, nervously.
“Mosquito bites,” he told her, laughing a little to ease her nerves, confident he was right.
He was surprised when she threw herself against his chest in relief. She fits perfectly against me, he thought; Mulder longed to protect her. He could have held her for an eternity, but she pulled away and sat down.
Eventually, he convinced her to lay down in his bed. He amicably sat on the floor.
Only a handful of people outside of his immediate family knew the details surrounding the abduction of Samantha.
So how he found himself pouring his heart out to his new partner, this Scully, days into their partnership was beyond explanation. And yet, here they were; he confided in her all of his trauma and fears, she listened without judgment and showed genuine concern. He worried he was telling her too much; she must have sensed it, as she calmly said, “You’ve got to trust me.”
He did. He didn’t understand it. It took him a long time to trust Reggie or Diana and yet, he found himself completely trusting Dana Scully despite his knowing that she was sent, at least partially, to spy on him. His trust in her was innate and instinctive. He couldn’t explain it, but he just felt he could trust her with anything.
She might think some of his ideas were outlandish and his approach unconventional, but she treated him with utmost respect and devotion as she listened to his personal story.
A phone call broke their discussion and they were off to look into another surprising death.
//
It felt like they were being led around by their noses. All the evidence from the case was being buried by local law enforcement. Scully was fascinated by the case and she couldn’t imagine working it for one second with anyone other than Fox Mulder, a man she didn’t even know existed until a month ago.
Strange anomalies kept occurring; Mulder tried to convince her they’d lost nine minutes in the rain and as they debated that, their sedan came to life on its own after stalling on the side of the road.
The discussion continued as they stood in a cemetery, bantering, in pouring rain in the middle of the night. Who does that? She thought. Who likes to debate this much? She yelled and questioned and rolled her eyes and finally laughed hysterically at this man. If our arguments are this explosive; so much so that we ignore this torrential downpour, what would our sex be like? She wondered, giggling as that image of him fucking her against a wall came back to her mind’s eye.
She closed her eyes as he drove and she felt her gut telling her: this man was her soulmate. It felt like divine revelation.
She thought he must feel it too. He’d known about her for less than a week and he still chose to open up to her about his sister’s abduction, something he said was very private.
He was everything she felt during that initial lecture; brilliant, confident and gracious, while also somewhat vulnerable and insecure. She wanted to protect him from whatever was afflicting him. She wanted to fuck him too. Her brain kept circling back to that thought.
I have to be patient, Scully thought; keep laying the groundwork. Our time will come.

I'm from Canada, and this is relevant.
The time: mid-1970s or 80s, I'm not sure
The place: my bedroom
These are the days before VCRs, definitely before video rentals. Streaming video is an unimaginable fantasy. Canada is officially bilingual, French and English, so the national TV network had two channels, one in each, even where the population was 97% Anglophone. Like me, for example.
But since the only TV we saw came from an antenna, the choices were limited. So I checked out the French station. And they had anime. Dubbed in French of course.
So my starter animes were Albator (Captain Harlock), Princesse Saphir (Princess Knight), and Signe Cats Eyes (Cat's Eye). I didn't understand the dialogue but I followed along well enough. And the french Albator theme slaps.
That post about death note being "everyone's first anime" (untrue statement) made me curious and now I want to gather data for science
Can you reblog this and tell me where are you from and what was your starter anime?

Media Manipulation Through the Lens of Tupac Shakur: Reflections by Former Black Panther Bro Shep Shakur
by Levi Wise Kenneth Catoe Jr.
The media has always negatively depicted the iconic Black Panther party, so I had to figure out who the Black Panthers were. On February 21, 2024, I attended the event “Coöperism 10/13: The Black Panther Party and Cooperation” at Columbia University. The event featured speakers Flores Forbes, Jamal Joseph, Suzanne Cope, and Bernard E. Harcourt, among others. In my opinion, the conversation was taking place to raise the question: who is the future activist in America? And what must future activists in America do to challenge the status quo?
During the conversation, the speakers traced the historical origins of the Panther Party, which began in Oakland, California, in 1966 under the leadership of Huey P. Newton and Bobby Seale. But more importantly, the conversation focused on the blueprint that the party followed, such as the 10-Point Black Panther Program, a set of guidelines for the Black Panther Party that states their ideals and ways of operating, a combination of the Bill of Rights and the Declaration of Independence. The speakers pointed out this information as a means of stating what the next generation should consider when challenging the government and political hierarchy in the United States
The conversation also centered on the survival programs that the Black Panther Party developed: the Breakfast Program, the Free Clinic Program, the Ambulance Program, and the Prison Pipeline Program. As much as I felt I discovered, I also believed I needed to learn more. In 2010, I interviewed Bro. Shep Shakur [pronounced Bruh Shep Shakur], a former Black Panther Party member or, as he would say, current comrade. Bro Shep educated me further while also giving me a firsthand account of prolific cultural and political figures such as Tupac Shakur and Reverend Al Sharpton, both of whom have a history with the Black Panther Party. I expected to learn one thing in this interview, but I wound up learning so much about being Black, and about myself being a New Jersey-born, Black, “whitewashed” man in America. Bro Shep insisted on a closed-door interview at City College in the Assata Shakur Room in the NAC Building, which is where the Black Panthers would gather during Assata Shakur’s college days (Assata was a student at CCNY). Once inside the room, I was checked for wiring and forced to watch hours of VCR tapes and view archival documents and photos.
I read the rules and was shown Mao’s Red Book to read from the Marxist doctrine of the Black Panther Party. It was an initiation and I passed.
It is interesting to me now to consider how Shakur’s mission was to inspire me to consider ways of activism and student activism, while at the time I was more interested in landing this interview. At the time, CCNY was launching a Black Student Union (BSU) but received resistance from the campus and needed all of the supporters that they could get. I was a student at Medgar Evers College, a PBI (Predominantly Black Institution), which made me the perfect ally, but in actuality, I knew nothing about the Black experience. I was raised as an Afro-Native, and my mother’s mother was born on an Indian Reservation in Cherokee Nation, North Carolina, delivered by the sister of my maternal grandfather, my Aunt Tessie (an Indian Reservation midwife). My mom is named after my grandfather’s mother, Mellie. That was my history; it was focused less on Black culture, and more on being Native American. The year 2014-2015 was a very interesting period of my life, where I would discover that I could be more than a creative writer and was moving towards becoming more journalistic. At the time, I found a sense of belonging among other socially conscious African Diasporic people at City College. Again, I had no knowledge at the time about being Black, but I knew what being a writer was. The Black student body at City College was looking for a student writer who could be a liaison through CUNY. I was soon introduced to a future Black filmmaker named Naheem Adios, and together through his filming and my writing, we launched a Black Student Union that also included Lehman College. I hadn’t studied Black history beyond what I was required to study at Medgar Evers College, which was solely to meet course requirements and not for interest.
So Shakur taught me about myself that day in a way in which I needed to be told, and maybe that was what he saw in me, and I am forever grateful. He spoke of how the Black Panthers had to read for three hours every day, how the Panthers had to always walk with their Red Book in their back pocket at all times, and how important it was to be wary of fake prophets and cults of personalities and to never place anyone on a pedestal. All of these things made sense to me later on: consider pop music today and how social media builds up artists into cult-like figures and their followers live by their every word. I was sweating profusely. I wanted to leave, but I couldn’t. I was being taught by an expert on student activism and based on what I see going on today in America and abroad I now know why Shakur was preparing me. I knew that I was learning something, and I knew that Shakur saw me as a worthy student who would pass on this knowledge, so, therefore, I am sharing chosen excerpts from our meeting.
Levi Wise-Catoe: Hi, can you tell our audience who you are and where you are from?
Bro Shep Shakur: I am Bro Shep Shakur. I am a Black Panther Party comrade, and I was born and grew up in the Bronx.
LWC: Who did you look up to growing up in NYC? Who were your role models?
BSS: Malcolm X was my role model as a kid.
LWC: Let’s talk about the Black Panthers and what you learned from the party.
BSS: Well the Black Panther's colors were black and blue—sky is the limit, black is the panther. Bobby Seale and Huey P. Newton founded the Black Panther Party in Oakland California. If a Panther is cornered and he can’t turn left or right, he’ll go straight for the aggressors.
LWC: That’s interesting I never knew that but it puts the panther association in a different context for me. What did the BPP represent for you?
BSS: For me, it represented a revolution, and also change: the constitution, the political system, the economic system, the whole country’s social structure—everything in America.
LWC: Was there anyone else in America that you felt was representing any sort of change at the time other than Malcolm X?
BSS: Fannie Lou Hamer was an influence on me.
LWC: How did you feel about Martin Luther King and the American representation of peace and justice?
BSS: Well, Martin Luther King’s views were beginning to change in 1968. He began attacking the war in Vietnam and standing up for the job unions in the U.S. and his last speech “I’ve Been to the Mountaintop” spoke of that change and he was killed soon after.
LWC: Yes, on April 4th, 1968. 1968 was a turbulent year in America. Some might argue as turbulent as 2020—following the assassination of King, the country was on fire with activism.
BSS: 1968 was a year of social change. There were snipers set up on rooftops all across Harlem during the King riots.
[Note: Shakur allowed me to view secret tapes of the Black Panther Party from its library of VH1 Tapes. I noticed Black snipers set up on my apartment building rooftop in Harlem, the Manhattanville Housing Projects, aiming guns towards the police below from 1968.]
LWC: This is interesting because that’s where I live. Can you tell me something that might surprise me to learn about the Panther Party?
BSS: Well you realize that Martin Luther King was being blackmailed by J. Edgar Hoover.
LWC: Really?
BSS: J. Edgar Hoover’s whole agenda was to neutralize and destroy anything or anyone fighting for Black equality. The American government began a relationship with the southern sharecroppers to put LSD in their fruit/crops through pesticides. It sold those fruits in the supermarkets up north because Black southern sharecroppers could only sell to other Blacks, never whites, and all this to turn Black people against one another mentally through drugs.*
LWC: That’s an interesting assertion. Do you think that the government found other ways to carry this out?
BSS: The white FBI was investigating the Panthers. It was the U.S. government vs. the Panthers. The FBI would utilize whatever they had by—phone tapping, mail opening, offices bugged, informant ranks, police rank and provocateurs would testify.**
LWC: Wow, it’s horrible what went on back then, and possibly today we are just not being informed.
BSS: Did you know that Tupac Shakur's biological father was an informant who was hired by the FBI to infiltrate the Black Panther Party?***
LWC: No, I’ve never heard that.
BSS: Yeah and once he turned state evidence against the party he went into the witness protection program. I never trusted Tupac’s biological dad and knew that he was up to something; which is how Afeni Shakur was imprisoned while pregnant with Tupac who was born actually born in prison.
LWC: I never knew that either can you please tell me more?
BSS: Tupac’s mom Afeni gave him another name at birth and changed his name once released because Tupac was a target of the government from the day he was born for being the child of Black Panthers. Tupac was raised by Panthers. His step-father Mutulu Shakur was an acupuncturist until he got locked up after being set up by the CIA. His biological dad is living upstate somewhere under a whole new identity and a whole new face. His biological father did all that just to assist the government in neutralizing the Black Panther Party.
LWC: Do you believe all of this plays a part in Tupac’s death?
BSS: I’m not sure but wouldn’t be surprised. Tupac was a pawn for the media. Think about it a thug was always considered to be a negative in the press until Tupac tattooed ‘Thug’ across his chest and then all of sudden ‘Thug’ became the blueprint for every young Black male rapper that has ever followed. Imagine the impact that would have been made if he had tattooed Black Pride of Black Excellence or something or anything other than thug?
LWC: That’s a good point and one that I never considered.
BSS: Tupac wasn’t raised that way. He was the product of two Black Panther’s. He was raised on education, knowledge, pride Black History and art; but unfortunately Hollywood created that image of the young Black thug that he played as Bishop in the 90s movie Juice and slowly but surely Tupac began to believe his own hype. The more Hollywood sold him on that image then came the branding with the thug tattoo across his chest and then they had him and it was only a matter of time until he was no longer useful to them and then he was gone.
LWC: That’s such a tragedy.
BCC: But the way it works once the Black pawn is of no use just like Tupac’s biological dad the informant where he is now? Nobody knows.
LWC: The plight of the Black man in America. Who else tried to infiltrate that Black Panther Party I’m sure there were others?
BCC: The Action Network’s founder Al Sharpton was another person that was hired to set up the Black Panthers.
LWC: Really?
BSS: Yeah they (Government) had him come to one of our meeting wiretapped but we caught him while he was here had him stripped then threw him out of our meetings. I call Black folks like Sharpton an ‘ambulance’, meaning he always comes around with his loud sirens whenever he sniffs out blood(s) {note: bloods is slang term for Black people}; and he only comes around to draw attention to himself. They the government sent him to one of our meetings wearing a wire to find out information regarding Assata Shakur’s whereabouts to set us up; but we caught him then threw him out. Sharpton is one of them. Don’t like him never did. He only comes around Black community when headlines generate ask yourself what cases has he ever won? His whole purpose for the government and white media is to send angry Negroes out in the streets protesting. All they are angry Black people marching: Diallo, Michael Stewart, but where is our Anti-crime Bill? Even after George Floyd where’s our Anti-Crime Bill? Asians got there’s with no protest?
LWC: And that is another great point but one that I cannot answer. Today we have attorney Ben Crump same purpose but he actually does win cases. Moving on what else can you tell me about the Black Panther Party?
BSS: Through the Black Panthers Breakfast Program we fed more hungry kids than the government but that’s not shown in the media. I always felt as though the worse thing the Panthers ever did was to brandish a gun because that’s the only image of the Black Panthers that the media actually does show.
LWC: So do you feel that the Black community is moving forward or backwards?
BSS: We (Black community) are definitely moving backwards. These days Black people have this “I got mine. You go get yours attitude.” We can’t we rely on our enemies to save us (note: white establishment). We need our own preparation. Back in the 70’s ever college campus had a BSU (Black Student Union) the BSU’s came out of the Black Panther Party there were over 600 Black Student Unions on college campuses back in the 70’s and today there are less than 60 that might still exist.
LWC: So how do we as a community protect and prepare in the social consciousness is no longer there? Black studies is under attack, woke culture is under attack, CRT (Critical Race Theory) is under attack, Reparations for the descendants of the formerly Enslaved is under attack and who are the gatekeepers of this new woke movement and who are they being sent by? How can we protect and prepare in 2024?
BSS: By not listening to white news/media, we must prepare by organizing, spreading the word, by learning Marshall Law, and survival and emergency tactics. The Black Panthers set up Free Clothes Program, Free Shoes, Free Ambulance in Winston Alabama because white ambulance companies wouldn’t pick up Black people and take us to the hospital. The Panthers had Free clinics, set up Sickle Cell Anemia programs that nobody knew about, Lead Poison programs, Tuberculosis program, program for teenage illiterate program, we took over Lincoln Hospital in the Bronx help out the Black community, set up free bussing prison program so that Black inmates could have visitors, set up a police program, The Black Panthers newspaper sold over a million copies at .25 cents a copy. What we were doing was never told and it was unheard of because we were Black independently owned taking care of our own community. I was the papers last regional manager. We were the only newspaper that the white owned media could never corrupt.
LWC: I think today’s young activists could learn a lot from the methods and community created by the Black Panthers.
BSS: Indeed there are several misconceptions regarding the party. We have been demonized by today’s media when in fact a lot of governmental programs credited to the government were founded by the Black Panther Party. Again, yes we were wrong to brandish guns, but it made the white man or the U.S. government fear us.
LWC: How do you feel about a Black man being president such as President Obama? What do you think of him?
BSS: I don’t think of him. He’s doing what they want him to do. He can’t change anything. He got money from the internet to launch his grassroots campaign; but big corporate money too, he owes the government what it needs through large investments. He’s not the first Black president, he's one of them, he's not one of us.
LWC: How do you feel about social media today and its impact on the youth?
BSS: Technology today controls society. Kids can’t tell time anymore unless it's digital. The concept of the video is to create misconceptions through images that brainwash kids: sex, money, and bling. I enjoyed Hip-Hop until it became rap; NWA brought in the gangster mentality which was all negative with no balance. If you look at clothes today everybody wears the same thing like robots and they must be told what to wear like robots… no individuality, everything is the same. In the ‘60s we wore tailor-made suits, shark skin suits, no sagging jeans—that’s prison culture, thug culture, and brainwashing. That’s how they used Tupac, the product of the Black Panthers, in the same ways they exploited the image of Black Panthers brandishing guns.
[Note: the Crips were formed out of the Black Panthers and the Bloods were formed out of the Crips. Which is interesting considering Bloods and Crip members developed Gangster Rap which Tupac became its cultural figure.]
LWC: What made you become an activist?
BSS: I was pissed off, that's what helped me decide to become a Panther. I discovered the being when I was at Hunter College and then I learned even more once I joined the Black Panthers. People think that it was the men that controlled the Panthers but it was the women that kept the Panthers together. Once the women left, the party fell apart because the men began to turn against one another; Huey and Bobby were both trained by female comrades.
LWC: Really?
BSS: Yeah I was as well, it was a woman who trained me to lock and load and how to clean out my gun. If I was in the military during wartime I would feel safer in combat with women by my side than to have men by my side because with men it’s always going to be an ego against the other man.
LWC: But going back to what you just said about the government—they turned against each other in what way?
BSS: By placing certain members of the party on pedestals, as I warned you about previously. Once Huey got locked up, Bobby Seale took more leadership within the party in Huey’s absence. Then when Huey returned back home the party became divided because Huey felt that he was the face of the Black Panther party. The government got Huey addicted to crack and Huey became paranoid and didn’t trust anybody anymore. The Panthers started killing each other.
LWC: This was definitely not what I expected to learn during this interview.
BSS: Dr. Huey P. Newton, PhD, became a crackhead and was assassinated by the Black Guerrilla movement that wanted to make a name for themselves, so they went after the Black Panthers founding member.
LWC: Wow I’m not sure how to respond to that. How did you respond to that upon learning of it?
BSS: Keep in mind Huey thought that the New York Panthers were against him as well. Huey wanted to take over the party nationally once he returned from prison. He was no longer interested in working together with other comrades; he wanted to be its sole leader. His ego took over once he returned back home and paranoia also took over him. There were infiltrators within the party and we became split in two (east vs. west). Huey began receiving phony letters with fake signatures that New York comrades were out to kill Huey so he was convinced that the East Coast were out to kill him. He received death threats to Huey by mail coming from the East Coast and the Panthers became divided, East Coast vs. West Coast, and both coasts began to believe that we were out to kill the other Coast.
[Note: this was the same tactic that was used to divide rap music in the 90’s. East Coast vs. West Coast wars which led to the death of both Tupac and Biggie. After a while, I thought what I was hearing began to make sense.]
LWC: But was that a good thing or a bad thing?
BSS: You decide.
In closing, I found it interesting when 17th National Black Writers Conference Honoree Paul Coates stated that the Black Panther Party talked too much, and he further argued that the rhetoric made the Panthers rather than its movement. Whereas in the beginning, I felt his opinion was off, I now understand what he was saying. It's about the 'powers that be' and how they have used media and manipulation to give life to the professional agitators and instigators that create negative misconceptions to divide and conquer organizations such as BBP and others that are put in place to divide and conquer the powers that be. But I did leave with a deeper understanding of the ways in which media functions.
Editor’s Notes:
*The editor has been unable to verify the existence of a conspiracy to contaminate crops destined for Black households with LSD. However, the CIA ran a program for decades, called MKUltra, that experimented with the use of LSD and a range of other drugs for the purposes of mind control, brainwashing, and psychological torture. MKUltra frequently used nonconsensual, illegal methods.
**The FBI did indeed investigate the Panthers. Through a counterintelligence program named COINTELPRO, the FBI actively surveilled and sabotaged the BPP. All of the methods described by Bro Shep—phone tapping, opening mail, bugging offices, seeding informants, writing fake letters that would sow division between members and chapters of the BPP—are known to have been used extensively as part of COINTELPRO’s attack on the Panthers. Many of the Party’s internal conflicts can be traced to these illegal interventions. COINTELPRO also directly targeted leaders through assassination, imprisonment, and the construction of false charges. Martin Luther King, Jr., Huey Newton, Bobby Seale, Fred Hampton, and many many others were targeted by the program. To this day, Assata Shakur remains the FBI’s most wanted woman.
***The editor has been unable to verify whether or not Tupac’s father, Billy Garland, was an informant who was placed in the witness protection program. He was largely absent from Tupac’s life.
****By his own admission, Sharpton has cooperated with the FBI. It is alleged that he pursued information relating to the whereabouts of Assata Shakur in the 1980s.
