WEEK 12
Artistic Vision Statement
We were tasked to create our own Artistic Vision Statement on week 10. We were asked four questions and was tasked to answer them. Our answers was then passed to another classmate at random and they would provide critique on our answers.
I don't have a pretty clear idea with what I want to do in the next five years. Currently, I am just going with the flow. I hope that in five years time, I will be able to co-own my own brand. Expanding on the idea of building this brand, there are a lot of things i have to do in order to be able to create it. I will have to properly research and understand what it means to own a brand. I know how tough and challenging it is and I must prepare myself for the worst.
The artwork "Dalam" by Mohdir is a piece i find rather exquisite. The piece itself has a beautiful meaning behind it. The concept behind "Dalam" centers on the interior experience and how people engage with spaces on an intimate level. This project delves into the subtlety of how interior environments shape our emotions, behaviors, and sense of identity. Rather than focusing purely on form, "Dalam" invites viewers to reflect on the atmosphere, materiality, and sensory experiences that define spaces.
For me, "Dalam" by Mohdir is a powerful reminder of what design can truly achieve. It pushes me to go beyond just creating functional or aesthetically pleasing spaces, encouraging me to design with a deeper sense of emotion and purpose.
The project’s focus on simplicity, sensory engagement, and thoughtful restraint inspires me to strip away unnecessary complexity and instead focus on the subtle details that truly resonate with people. It reminds me that great design isn’t just about what’s seen—it’s about how a space makes someone feel. This project motivates me to think about design as a tool for creating reflection, well-being, and connection, and to always ask myself: How can I make my work not just visually appealing, but deeply impactful for those who experience it?
This correlates to my artistic vision as I can use the same ideology behind "Dalam" as the perfect foundation for creating my brand. It teaches me that design isn’t just about the end product—it’s about creating meaningful connections and emotional experiences for the people who engage with it.
By focusing on simplicity, sensory richness, and purposeful restraint, I can shape my brand to prioritize quality over quantity, creating designs that leave a lasting emotional impact. My brand won’t just be about the products or spaces I create, but about how they make people feel—whether it's calm, connection, or reflection. Like "Dalam", I want my brand to evoke emotion and tell a story that resonates deeply, setting my work apart through authenticity, depth, and a commitment to transformative design.

Happy 94th Birthday, Professor Wang Gungwu! This photo was taken during my archival and field research at the East Asian Institute, National University of Singapore (2005). Professor Wang received his B.A. (Hons) and M.A. degrees from the University of Malaya in Singapore and his Ph.D. at the University of London (1957).
His teaching career took him from the University of Malaya (Singapore and Kuala Lumpur, 1957-1968, Professor of History 1963-68) to The Australian National University, where he was Professor and Head of the Division of Pacific and Asian History (1968-1986) and Director, Research School of Pacific and Asian Studies (1975-1980).
From 1986 to 1995, he was Vice-Chancellor (Head) of the University of Hong Kong. He was the Director of the East Asian Institute of the NUS from 1997 to 2007 and founding Chair of the NUS Lee Kuan Yew School of Public Policy in 2004.
He is a Commander of the British Empire (CBE, 1991), Fellow and former President of the Australian Academy of the Humanities, Foreign Honorary Member of the American Academy of Arts and Science, Member of Academia Sinica, Honorary Member of the Chinese Academy of Social Science. For his distinguished achievements as an expert on the history of China and Southeast Asia, he was conferred the Fukuoka Asian Cultural Prize (1991), the Tang Prize (2007), and Singapore's Meritorious Medal (2013) and Distinguished Service Order (2020).
He became the 3rd person to be named a University Professor by the NUS (2007). He received honorary doctorates from the University of Melbourne (1997), the University of Hong Kong (2002), the University of Cambridge (2009), and the NUS (2022).
During his vice-chancellorship at the University of Hong Kong, higher education in Hong Kong expanded enormously, and the University accepted its highest-ever intake of students. A firm believer in the benefits of globalization, Professor Wang strongly encouraged international activities and exchanges with overseas institutions. Under his support, the University established the University of Hong Kong Foundation for Educational Development and Research, the first of its kind at the local tertiary education level, to foster stronger links with the community and enhance the University's capacity for teaching and research.
In 2005, through Dr. Wang’s recommendation, I became a visiting scholar at the NUS Asia Research Institute (ARI). While working on my book Migrations and Meditations (2016), I discovered that Dr. Wang authored Pulse (1950), the very first published collection of poetry in English in Malaysia and Singapore—long before he became an eminent scholar. He recalls visiting UP Diliman in 1950 to attend a creative writing workshop conducted by Philippine National Artist for Literature N.V.M. Gonzalez. Dr. Wang remembers his contemporaries, notably the iconic Filipino poet and dramatist Virginia Reyes Moreno. He also recalls that with funding and support from American companies and institutions, many Filipino writers were fortunate to gain access to creative writing and literature programs in American universities.
Dr. Wang turned 94 on 9 October 2024. To honor his legacy, NUS Press released a new and more affordable paperback edition of Home is Not Here (2018), his memoir: https://buff.ly/4bST3ZC

Rule the Chess Board: Building a Strong Foundation
The first step in mastering chess is understanding the rules and the chess board. At Kiya Learning, we emphasize teaching the fundamental principles such as piece movement, capturing, castling, and checkmate. Through interactive sessions and guided practice, your child will not only learn how to play but will also gain insight into the strategic elements of the game. We make learning the rules exciting and straightforward, ensuring that kids are confident in their abilities to navigate the chess board.
5 Roles of Chess in Cognitive Development and Problem-Solving Skills
Chess is often referred to as the ultimate brain game. Here are five critical ways it impacts cognitive development and problem-solving:
Enhances Critical Thinking: Chess requires kids to think several moves ahead, helping them develop foresight and advanced thinking.
Improves Concentration: With every game, players must remain focused on the board, training them to block out distractions.
Develops Logical Reasoning: Each move in chess has a purpose, and kids learn to understand cause and effect, improving their logical reasoning.
Promotes Problem-Solving Skills: Chess presents countless puzzles that encourage kids to think creatively to overcome challenges.
Boosts Decision-Making Abilities: The game teaches kids to make decisions quickly and efficiently, a skill they can apply in real life.
Learn Patience and Discipline from Chess
Patience and discipline are key traits in chess, and they’re essential for both personal and academic success. In chess, rushing through moves can lead to costly mistakes, teaching kids the value of waiting, analyzing, and planning. Our instructors at Kiya Learning encourage students to take their time with each move, fostering a deeper level of thought and self-control. Over time, your child will learn how to approach challenges with a calm and methodical mindset.
How Playing Chess Can Boost Memory and Cognitive Function?
Chess is a fantastic workout for the brain. Research shows that regularly playing chess can enhance memory and overall cognitive function. At Kiya Learning, we help kids develop their short-term and long-term memory by teaching them to memorize openings, recognize patterns, and recall past games. These skills don’t just apply to chess—they transfer to academic performance as well, improving areas such as math, reading comprehension, and test-taking abilities.
Tournament Exposure: Ready for the Next Level?
At Kiya Learning, we believe in providing opportunities for kids to test their skills in a competitive environment. We offer tournament exposure where students can participate in online chess competitions, gaining valuable experience while learning sportsmanship and competitive spirit. These tournaments give kids the chance to face off against peers of similar skill levels and learn how to adapt under pressure.
How to Get Ranks and Rating Points?
As your child progresses, they can work towards earning chess ranks and rating points through the official systems. In our advanced classes, we teach kids about the rating system used by FIDE (International Chess Federation) and national chess bodies. Sony and AI Singapore collaborate on SEA-LION LLMs

Sony and AI Singapore collaborate on SEA-LION LLMs
.pp-multiple-authors-boxes-wrapper display:none; img width:100%;
Sony Research and AI Singapore (AISG) will collaborate on research for the SEA-LION family of large language models (LLMs).
SEA-LION, which stands for Southeast Asian Languages In One Network, aims to improve the accuracy and capability of AI models when processing languages from the region. This is particularly important given the linguistic diversity of Southeast Asia, which is home to over a thousand different languages.
“As a global company, diversity and localisation are vital forces,” said Hiroaki Kitano, President of Sony Research. “In Southeast Asia specifically, there are more than a thousand different languages spoken by the citizens of the region. This linguistic diversity underscores the importance of ensuring AI models and tools are designed to support the needs of all populations around the world.”
The collaboration will focus on testing and improving the SEA-LION model, with a particular emphasis on Tamil, a language spoken by an estimated 60-85 million people worldwide. Sony Research will leverage its expertise in Indian languages – including Tamil – and its research in speech generation, content analysis, and recognition.
“Access to LLMs that address the global landscape of language and culture has been a barrier to driving research and developing new technologies that are representative and equitable for the global populations we serve,” Kitano added.
The collaboration is further strengthened by Kitano’s existing ties to the Singaporean technology landscape. He holds positions on numerous advisory councils and boards in the country, including the Advisory Council on the Ethical Use of AI and Data, the Infocomm Media Development Authority (IMDA), the Singapore Economic Development Board (EDB), and the National Research Foundation, Singapore (NRF).
“The integration of the SEA-LION model, with its Tamil language capabilities, holds great potential to boost the performance of new solutions,” Teo continued. “We are particularly eager to contribute to the testing and refinement of the SEA-LION models for Tamil and other Southeast Asian languages, while also sharing our expertise and best practices in LLM development.
“We look forward to seeing how this collaboration will drive innovation in multilingual AI technologies.”

The Path to Development: Harnessing Honesty, Commitment, and Discipline in India
🔰INTRODUCTION
India, with its rich cultural heritage and rapidly growing economy, stands on the cusp of becoming a developed nation. However, achieving this status requires more than economic growth; it necessitates a transformation in societal values. This report explores how embracing honesty, commitment, and discipline can propel India towards becoming a developed country.
🔰The Role of HONESTY in National Development
Honesty is the bedrock of a prosperous society. It fosters trust, transparency, and accountability in both public and private sectors. According to a 2020 study by Transparency International, countries with lower corruption levels tend to have higher Human Development Index (HDI) scores. India's rank on the Corruption Perceptions Index (CPI) was 86 out of 180 countries in 2022. By promoting honesty, India can improve its CPI ranking, leading to increased foreign investments and economic growth.
Scientific Insight:
Research indicates that corruption can reduce a country's GDP by up to 1% annually. For India, a 1% increase in GDP could translate to approximately $34 billion, significantly impacting infrastructure, education, and healthcare sectors.
🔰COMMITMENT: The Catalyst for Sustained Progress
Commitment to goals and responsibilities ensures sustained progress. It involves not only setting realistic objectives but also steadfastly working towards achieving them. The Indian government's commitment to initiatives like "Make in India" and "Digital India" exemplifies how dedication can drive development.
Data Analysis:
-The "Make in India" initiative has created over 10 million jobs since its inception in 2014.
-'Digital India" has increased internet penetration from 27% in 2015 to 54% in 2021, enhancing access to information and services.
Commitment at the individual level, such as fulfilling professional and personal responsibilities, amplifies these macro-level impacts, contributing to the overall development of the nation.
🔰DISCIPLINE: The Framework for Efficient Functioning
Discipline, both personal and systemic, is crucial for maintaining order and efficiency. Countries like Japan and Germany, known for their disciplined work culture, consistently rank high on global development indices. Implementing discipline in various aspects of life can lead to better time management, higher productivity, and improved quality of life.
Technical Insight:
A disciplined workforce is pivotal for industrial efficiency. For instance, a report by the World Economic Forum suggests that disciplined labor practices could boost productivity by 20-30%. In India, improving workforce discipline could potentially add $1.2 trillion to the economy by 2030.
CASE STUDIES: Global Examples
1.Singapore:
Singapore's transformation from a developing to a developed nation within a few decades is a testament to the power of honesty, commitment, and discipline. Strict anti-corruption laws, unwavering commitment to economic policies, and a disciplined approach to urban planning have made Singapore a global economic powerhouse.
2.South Korea:
South Korea's rapid industrialization, known as the "Miracle on the Han River," was driven by disciplined execution of economic plans, a strong commitment to education, and a culture of integrity.
🔰CONCLUSION: A Vision for India's Future
India's journey to becoming a developed nation hinges on more than just economic policies; it requires a cultural shift towards honesty, commitment, and discipline. By embedding these values in everyday life, India can create a robust foundation for sustainable development.
Call to Action:
1.Promote Honesty:
• Strengthen anti-corruption measures and encourage transparency in all sectors.
• Foster a culture of integrity from the grassroots level, starting with education.
2. Encourage Commitment:
• Support initiatives that require long-term dedication and provide incentives for sustained efforts.
• Recognize and reward commitment in various fields, from academia to industry.
3.Instill Discipline:
• Implement policies that promote disciplined practices in workplaces and public life.
• Encourage self-discipline through community programs and public awareness campaigns.
Together, these values can unlock India's potential, ensuring that the nation not only achieves but sustains its status as a developed country.

Curriculum planning is another cornerstone of their role, where educators meticulously craft age-appropriate learning experiences aligned with Singapore’s early childhood framework. These plans integrate play-based learning, literacy activities, numeracy skills, and cultural appreciation, ensuring a well-rounded educational experience that supports comprehensive development.
Assessment and progress monitoring constitute critical tasks for educators, enabling them to evaluate each child’s developmental milestones and learning outcomes. Through systematic observations and assessments, they identify strengths and areas needing additional support, collaborating closely with parents and guardians to provide tailored guidance and support that bridges home and school environments.
The Impact of Early Childhood Educators
The impact of early childhood educators extends far beyond the classroom walls. By nurturing a love for learning and fostering critical thinking skills from an early age, educators lay formidable foundations for future academic achievement. They cultivate curiosity, creativity, and adaptability, preparing children to face the challenges and opportunities they will encounter throughout their educational journey and beyond.
Social and emotional development is another cornerstone of their impact. Through intentional teaching practices, educators nurture empathy, self-regulation, and conflict-resolution skills, equipping children with essential emotional intelligence to navigate interpersonal relationships effectively in school and later in life. This holistic approach enhances children’s well-being and contributes to a positive classroom environment conducive to learning and growth.
Collaboration lies at the heart of an educator’s role, fostering partnerships with families and communities to support children's holistic development. By engaging parents through regular communication, workshops, and collaborative goal-setting, educators ensure that learning experiences are enriched both at home and in educational settings. This collaborative effort strengthens the support network around each child, promoting continuity and consistency in their educational journey.
Qualifications and Continuous Professional Development
In Singapore, early childhood educators undergo rigorous training and certification to meet national standards. They acquire specialised knowledge in child development, curriculum planning, and effective classroom management strategies. Continuous professional development is emphasised to keep educators abreast of evolving educational practices and research-based methodologies, ensuring that they are equipped to provide high-quality learning experiences that meet the diverse needs of young learners.
Challenges and Opportunities in the Field
Despite the critical role they play, early childhood educators face challenges such as workforce shortages and the need for greater recognition and support. Efforts are underway to attract more individuals to the profession through incentives like scholarships, career advancement opportunities, and competitive salaries. By addressing these challenges, Singapore aims to build a robust workforce capable of delivering excellence in early childhood education.
Advancements in early childhood education continue to drive innovation and improvement in teaching methods and curriculum frameworks. Singapore remains committed to integrating technology responsibly and adapting educational practices to meet the needs of a diverse student population. These advancements present opportunities for educators to explore new approaches and methodologies that enhance learning outcomes and enrich the educational experience for young children.
Conclusion
Early childhood educators in Singapore are more than caretakers; they are architects of early learning experiences that shape the foundation of a child's future. Their dedication to nurturing young minds and fostering holistic development underscores their significance in society.
