Stone Turtle of Karakorum, Mongolia, c. 1235-1260 CE: this statue is one of the only surviving features of Karakorum, which was once the capital city of the Mongol Empire
Tumblr media
The statue is decorated with a ceremonial scarf known as a khadag (or khata), which is part of a Buddhist custom that is also found in Tibet, Nepal, and Bhutan. The scarves are often left atop shrines and sacred artifacts as a way to express respect and/or reverence. In Mongolia, this tradition also contains elements of Tengrism/shamanism.
Tumblr media
The city of Karakorum was originally established by Genghis Khan in 1220 CE, when it was used as a base for the Mongol invasion of China. It then became the capital of the Mongol Empire in 1235 CE, and quickly developed into a thriving center for trade/cultural exchange between the Eastern and Western worlds.
The city attracted merchants of many different nationalities and faiths, and Medieval sources note that the city displayed an unusual degree of diversity and religious tolerance. It contained 12 different temples devoted to pagan and/or shamanistic traditions, two mosques, one church, and at least one Buddhist temple.
As this article explains:
The city might have been compact, but it was cosmopolitan, with residents including Mongols, Steppe tribes, Han Chinese, Persians, Armenians, and captives from Europe who included a master goldsmith from Paris named William Buchier, a woman from Metz, one Paquette, and an Englishman known only as Basil. There were, too, scribes and translators from diverse Asian nations to work in the bureaucracy, and official representatives from various foreign courts such as the Sultanates of Rum and India.
This diversity was reflected in the various religions practised there and, in time, the construction of many fine stone buildings by followers of Taoism, Buddhism, Islam, and Christianity.
The prosperous days of Karakorum were very short-lived, however. The Mongol capital was moved to Xanadu in 1263, and then to Khanbaliq (modern-day Beijing) in 1267, under the leadership of Kublai Khan; Karakorum lost most of its power, authority, and leadership in the process. Without the resources and support that it had previously received from the leaders of the Mongol Empire, the city was left in a very vulnerable position. The residents of Karakorum began leaving the site in large numbers, until the city had eventually become almost entirely abandoned.
There were a few scattered attempts to revive the city in the years that followed, but any hope of restoring Karakorum to its former glory was then finally shattered in 1380, when the entire city was razed to the ground by Ming Dynasty troops.
The Erdene Zuu Monastery was later built near the site where Karakorum once stood, and pieces of the ruins were taken to be used as building materials during the construction of the monastery. The Erdene Zuu Monastery is also believed to be the oldest surviving Buddhist monastery in Mongolia.
Tumblr media
There is very little left of the ruined city today, and this statue is one of the few remaining features that can still be seen at the site. It originally formed the base of an inscribed stele, but the pillar section was somehow lost/destroyed, leaving nothing but the base (which may be a depiction of the mythological dragon-turtle, Bixi, from Chinese mythology).
This statue and the site in general always kinda remind me of the Ozymandias poem (the version by Horace Smith, not the one by Percy Bysshe Shelley):
In Egypt's sandy silence, all alone,
stands a gigantic leg
which far off throws the only shadow
that the desert knows.
"I am great OZYMANDIAS," saith the stone,
"the King of Kings; this mighty city shows
the wonders of my hand."
The city's gone —
naught but the leg remaining
to disclose the site
of this forgotten Babylon.
We wonder —
and some Hunter may express wonder like ours,
when thro' the wilderness where London stood,
holding the wolf in chace,
he meets some fragment huge
and stops to guess
what powerful but unrecorded race
once dwelt in that annihilated place

Born Again
Now Playing: Seven Nation Army~ The White Stripes
Narrative
Tumblr media
Four years later.....
"Master Wayne. It’s been some time." Alfred said, smiling lowly, holding the phone. Bruce, nodded and looked around. "Yes. Yes it has. I need a ride." Alfred stops what he's doing, "And, where are we, sir?" He asked, Bruce. Bruce glances around. "Bhutan, I think." He said, a curious Sherpa nearby nods at Bruce.
"Am, I to assume that you’re without money and passport?" Alfred asked, with slight amusement. "I’m traveling a bit light, yes." Bruce said, knowing Alfred was enjoying this. "I believe there’s an airstrip at Khatmandu long enough for a G5. Make your way there, I’ll have the jet down in fifteen hours." Alfred said, making his way into the office. "Very good. Oh, and Alfred?" Bruce mumbled. "Yes, sir?" Alfred said, sitting down in the office chair. "Bring some painkillers." Alfred chuckled, hanging up the phone.
Vivica's Pov
I walked into my apartment building tired and exhausted carrying folders and bags. Being CEO now was not easy, but hey I earned it and I'm proud. It's not every day that women get recognized for doing twice as better as the men, especially for black women. Shit, we gotta work three times as hard. But, getting where you want to be in this world is an accomplishment.
I walked towards the front desk and smiled at michael, "Hey, Mike, got anything for me?" He smiled back and nodded, "Yeah, as a matter of fact, a man came by and dropped off a huge vase of flowers." I frowned confused and tried to rack my brain on who it could be. I haven't been on a date in months.
"He didn't leave a name?" Mike smiled, sadly shaking his head. "No, ma'am, he just said he was a old friend. They were gorgeous flowers. I took them to your penthouse for you." I nodded, and thanked Michael. "Tell your mother i said hello and let me know when she gets out the hospital, I'll bake another pineapple cake for her." I said, as he smiled widely and nodded, "thank you, Viv, I appreciate that."
I waved bye to Michael and walked towards the elevator. I got in and continued to think about who could have sent me flowers, looking at the numbers tower up. I stood in deep thought not being able to think of anyone as the elevator doors opened. I walked down the hallway towards my door. I huffed as I grabbed my keys and unlocked the door, it's been a long fucking day.
I closed the door behind me and stepped out my heels groaning as they hit the cold marble floor. I go to turn the heat up because it currently feels like Antarctica in Gotham right now. I walked into the living seeing a vase of Carnations sitting on my coffee table. My favorite flowers. There's only a select of people who knew what my favorite flowers were. I grabbed the card off them and opened it up, "I love you. See you soon." I read the card out loud.
These could be from my mom because she loves to send me flowers or they could be from my sister, Victoria, because when she gets herself flowers she always thinks of me and sends some to me. My thoughts were cut off when my phone started ringing. I looked down at it and frowned seeing no caller ID.
"Hello, this is Vivica, who's this?" I heard the person clear their throat and speak as my whole body froze, "Hello, Vivica, it's been so long since I've heard your voice. How are you doing, love?" His voice made shivers go down my spine, my voice was caught in my throat. I couldn't find the words to say anything, tears slowly filled my eyes as I began to stutter. "B-bruce. H-how........how are you calling me?"
I heard him deep chuckle, "I know it's been long since the last time I've seen you. And, not a day went by that I haven't thought about you. Alot has changed and I miss you." Tears fell down my cheeks as I stood in disbelief. "T-they said you were dead. How are you talking to me right now?" He sighed, "you wanna open the door for me?" He said, as I jerked my head towards my door.
I quickly hung up the phone and speed walked towards the door. I hesitated to open the door my stomach in knots at what is standing behind it. I gripped the handle and opened the door and gasped seeing him stand in all his glory, looking down at me.
I placed my hand over my mouth and walked back as him walked in closing the door behind him. He smiled and reached out grabbing my waist pulling me into a hug, a tearful smile came onto my face as I slowly hugged me back. He gently lifted me off the floor and laid small kisses against my neck. I laughed lowly rubbing the back of his head, basking in the moment.
"Missed you, Bubba."

For part two of the near year ask game, the kindness I’ve seen other people show
My little brother has been growing into an amazing person
One thing he has done is volunteer with his school to help the younger kids out and he is really great with them and has expressed that he enjoys being able to be a role model for them
He is really advanced in several academic areas and when he tells me stories about his school days one thing I’ve noticed is it’s a recurring theme that he understands things more than his classmates, and every single time he is in the position to do so he helps them out without ever judging them for not being at his level
He also is always willing to help make someone new at school feel welcome
I think the most astounding part is how naturally this all comes to him, when he talks about this he talks as if he would never consider not helping, its just his first and most natural instinct to help when he is able to
I’m very proud of him 🩷
That's very awesome!!
This is the last ask! Your good news from 2023 is this:
After 14 years of population reduction work, Bhutan became the first nation to sterilize and vaccinate its entire stray dog population! They also microchipped 32,000 pet dogs, presumably to keep them from becoming strays.

Heraldry and Emblem Wars Round 2
Tumblr media
The second round of the Heraldry and Emblem Wars will start tomorrow! Congrats to the arms and emblems that made it past the prelims. So many amazing submissions unfortunately couldn’t make it to the second round. The poll I released to decide whether I would make a bracket graphic tied, so I decided to not make a graphic. I started making one, but it was difficult to fit all 32 arms and emblems into the image.
There will be 16 brackets in this round, divided into four groups. Four polls will be posted per day. I hope everyone has fun with the rest of the tournament!
Here are all of the brackets in round 2:
Group A:
1. Coat of arms of Ireland vs. Coat of arms of Anguilla
2. Coat of arms of French Polynesia vs. Coat of arms Paul McCartney
3. Coat of arms of Dlouhá Trebová, Czechia vs. Coat of arms of House Horpe (A Song of Ice and Fire)
4. Coat of arms of Norman Lim Kwong vs. National Park Service arrowhead insignia
Group B:

6. Coat of arms of Mexico vs. Emblem of the Mexico national football team
7. Toki Pona symbol vs. Coat of arms of Kamchatka Krai, Russia
8. Coat of arms of North Savo, Finland vs. Coat of arms of Hijum, Netherlands
Group C:
9. Emblem of Kazakhstan vs. Coat of arms of South Ostrobothnia, Finland
10. Coat of arms of Yukon vs. Coat of arms of Côte d'Ivoire
11. Coat of arms of Rakova, Czechia vs. Mon of the Taira Clan
